CHAPTER 4

GEM-ENHANCEMENT:
THE SILENCE
0000000000
00000
I will admit that my interactions with Shadows while growing up where somewhat limited.
Most of them took place when I went to High School, I was one of the only Awares at the Institute. Bayville had a few Shadow students, also there was the time Ororo dated a Vampire (long story).
It wasn't until we settled in Seidou and I met Jalal that I really started to interact with Shadows more. And now in Seidou a Shadow works closely with the Shadowchasers and my Granddaughter.
And things would just get more interesting from there.
On the main road heading into Seidou, a lone Duel Runner is making it's way through the countryside. The rider is a slim man wearing a dull brown shirt and jeans, the runner itself is streamlined and bronze colored model.
The rider is Kaiden Lightwind, an Elf who is a member of a local clan living in and around Seidou. He served as the unofficial Shadowchaser to represent Shadowkind, and was on his way back into town from a thing with his Clan. Now, he needed to get back home and to working with the Shadowchasers.
As he continues down the road, he spots a shape in the distance on the road, as he draws closer he realizes the shape is humanoid and right in his path, he hits the brakes, skidding to a stop just short of the person. The man is dressed in a biker outfit with a helmet.
"What the Hell are you thinking? Stay out of the middle of the road," Kaiden shouts, taking off his hemet and revealing his medium length brown hair and pointed ears, however the man doesn't respond. "Do you talk?"
The man removes the helmet, underneath he is a Dark Elf with a shaved head, and his mouth has been crudely sewn shut. Kaiden narrows his eyes, he had heard of this before, a Dark Elf matron about 50 years ago had expected do much loyalty out of her servants that she sewed their mouths shut so they couldn't reveal her secrets. She had eventually been betrayed by her Daughter, who ruled the clan to this day.
The Dark Elf takes out a smart phone and types into it, a synthesized voice coming out of it. "I am known as Tevor, I am here under orders to bring you to my boss," Tevor says.
"Your boss? Great, a hired gun," Kaiden says, shaking his head. "And just who do you work for?"
"That is for me to know, and for you to find out," Tevor says, reaching into his jacket, Kaiden tenses up a moment, but relaxes when he sees it is a flash drive. "Duel me, if you win, then I will give you this, it will help your, friends out if they can access it."
"Fine, if you want to play that way..." Kaiden says, detaching his duel disk from his runner and taking a deck out of his pocket and sliding it into the disk. "You have a deal."
"Then, lets duel," Tevor says, taking out his duel disk and deck, activating it.
(Kaiden Lightwind: 8000) - (Tevor: 8000)
"I'll make the first move," Tevor says, drawing six cards off the top of his deck. "I'll place one card face down, and activate the spell card Heart of the Underdog," he says, and a face down card appears in front of him, followed by a continuous spell card. "But we'll get to thet next turn, I set one monster in defense mode, and end my turn."
"Then its my draw," Kaiden says, drawing a card, glancing at the face down card, he thinks carefully. "I think I'll start out with this card, my Gem-Armadillo in attack mode," he says, and a golden skinned Armadillo with two rockets and gemstones encrusted into its sides appears. (1700/500)
"Your monster may be impressive, but it doesn't hold a candle to what's waiting in my deck," Tevor comments.
"Yes, but since I normal summoned my Armadillo, I get its effect, so I can take a certain type of monster out of my deck and add it to my hand," Kaiden says, picking up his deck and searching through it. And this one will do nicely, he thinks, taking the card and adding it to his hand, he shuffles his deck and puts it back in the holder.
"Before you do anything else, I trigger my trap card, Infernal Inquisitor!" Tevor says, and a demonic looking spellcaster appears behind him, carrying a staff.
"Well, then Gem-Armadillo, attack his face down monster with Jeweled Rollout!" Kaiden commands, and the Armadillo rolls into a ball, going forward at high speed and slamming into the face down monster, which is briefly revealed to be a green furred monster with wings. "Wait, was that..."
"Don't concern yourself with it," Tevor says as the spellcaster's staff begins glowing.
Was that a Feral Imp? Why would he use a card that old, Kaiden thinks, then takes another card out of his hand and slides it into his disk. "I'll end my turn with one card face down."
"I draw!" Tevor says, drawing a card as Heart of the Underdog starts to glow, he shows the card as a Headless Knight. "And since this is a normal monster, I get to draw again," he adds, drawing a second card, showing it as La Jinn the Mystical Genie of the Lamp. "Lucky me," he says, drawing again. "This card doesn't qualify, so I'll simply add it to my hand."
What kind of deck is he using? Some sort of, vanilla fiend deck? Kaiden thinks to himself.
"Next, I play the spell card Polymerization, so I'll fuse together the Headless Knight I just drew and my Earl of Demise," he says, and two monsters, first a suit of armor carrying a sword but lacking a head, then a fiendish man in noble clothing carrying a rapier appears before being drawn into a vortex. "And with it, I can summon, the Duke of Demise!"
The monster that emerges is dressed in a faded tunic with a purple cape, holding a rapier and looking at the Armadillo with a skeletal smile. (2000/1700)
"What is that thing?" Kaiden says, he had only briefly heard about this card, but never thought he'd be facing it.
"A monster of considerable power, and to add to that I'll summon my La Jinn the Mystical Genie of the Lamp!" Tevor continues, and the green genie appears with a chuckle. (1800/1000). "Now La Jinn, attack his Gem Armadillo with Dark Sorcery!" He adds and La Jinn gathers up a ball of dark energy and throws it at the Armadillo, shattering it. "And now its your turn Duke of Demise, attack him directly with undead rapier slash!"
The undead duke charges forward, slashing at Kaiden.
"And I'll end my turn with one card face down," Tevor says, and a face down card appears in front of him.
(K: 5900) - (T: 8000)
Kaiden draws a card. "So you like fusions huh? Well, here's a fusion for you, I play the spell card Gem-Knight Fusion, and I'll use my Gem-Knight Lazuli and my Gem-Knight Sardonyx," he says, and a small metallic monster with two long tentacle like appendages and a bulkier monster carrying a chain made out of gemstones appears, the two fly together in a swirling vortex. "So I fusion summon this, the Gem-Knight Citrine!"
Another knight appears, this one is dressed in bronze armor with two fists made out of an orange gemstone, carrying a sword made of the same material. (2200/1950)
"And thanks to his effect, you can't activate your card effects when he attacks or is attacked," Kaiden adds, although Tevor barely responds. "I don't like the looks of your Duke of Demise, so I'm taking it out, Citrine attack his Duke of Demise with Flaming Sword attack!"
The knight raises his sword and charges forward, slamming it down onto the fiendish nobleman. However the Duke of Demise just parries its attack, pushing the knight back.
"What was that?" Kaiden asks.
"Duke of Demise cannot be destroyed as a result of battle," Tevor explains.
"I'll... end my turn with one monster in defense mode then," Kaiden says.

At the Xavier Institute, while the school had the modern ameneties like computer labs and databases, its library was still filled with books. Marie enters the library, nodding to a couple of the younger students as she goes past them, smiling a little because she notices they're playing duel monsters on the table between them.
Enjoy dueling for fun you two, I hope you never have to stop, she thinks, moving towards the back of the library. Even before becoming an unofficial Shadowchaser she hadn't been able to duel for fun for awhile. First they had come under assault by an inter-dimensional warlord named the Hunter who had been searching for a dangerous enemy. A few months later during the Sanctuary Tournament, they had come under assault by an enemy called the Nevershould, an Outer God that came with the intention of sewing chaos and destroying all life in the universe.
She reaches up, picking a book off the shelf, it was fairly non-descript, most students didn't even give it a second look. The book itself was called Misfits, a commentary on the emergence of humans with, unusual abilities that had been written by a famous comic book writer from New York, and one of the few from its era, having been written a few years after Mutants where revealed to the world, that had a pro-Mutant stance. As she opens it up, an object falls out of it, when she bends over, she realizes its a Duel Monsters card, she curiously reads the name.
"With Great Power..." She mutters, looking over the card, she hadn't heard of it before, but it would only work in certain decks, and her's was one of them.
"Hey Marie, what are you looking at?" A voice asks, Marie absent-mindedly slides the card into her deck case, smiling lightly when she turns to see a Japanese girl a couple of years younger than her, with long black hair, wearing a white tank top and jeans.
"Hey Chieko," Marie says with a smile, Chieko Saito was another one of the students at the Institute as well as Arashi's younger sister. "Sorry, nothing important, just something I found."
"Oh, okay," Chieko shrugs. "What brings you here?"
"Just thinking about something," Marie says, putting the book back on the shelf. "How are things around here?"
"Quiet," Chieko says with a shrug. "Nothing's really happened since the Sanctuary Tournament."
"That figures..." Marie says with a light chuckle, before turning serious. "Do you know where, 'it' is?"
"Top shelf, behind the collections of Poe and Lovecraft," Cheiko says, before heading away.
Marie couldn't blame her, there where times that 'it' scared her too. Getting a ladder she gets up to the top shelf of the bookshelf, pulling aside two books she pulls something out. Its another book, black leather bound and beaten up, it looks relatively unimportant.
It had belonged to the High Church of Error, the followers of the Nevershould, but it had little actual magical properties according to the Shadowchasers, they had called it the Lost Tome. She opens it, flipping through blank pages and pages with writing before stopping on a page that had been blank before.
Fire, Water, Earth, and Wind, four ancient elements to which they pledge. The world of the old fights the world of the new, neither wavering or fading. Their proxies wage a war long fought, and a victory hard earned. Enlightenment or Darkness is the only recourse.
Marie blinks, she had absolutely no idea what that meant.

"Its my draw!" Tevor types, drawing his next card. He. "This card doesn't qualify for Heart of the Underdog," he adds, then cringes as the Duke of Demise slashes at him. "So I'll play it, the spell card Summoner's Art," he says as his deck starts glowing. He removes a card from his deck slot and adds it to his hand. "But I'll get to that later, first lets deal with your knight."
"And how do you plan to do that?" Kaiden asks, looking at Tevor.
"With an old favorite, since my Duke of Demise is a level 6 Fusion monster I can give him this card, Fusion Weapon!" Tevor replies, as a two pronged bladed weapon appears on the zombie nobleman's arm. (Duke of Demise: 3500/3200)
This guy's deck is tricky, he's using normal fiend monsters by the looks of things, and fiends can be tricky to fight, Kaiden thinks.
"Now, Duke of Demise, destroy Gem-Knight Citrine with undead rapier slash!" Tevor says, and the undead nobleman charges forward, slashing through the knight as it shatters. "Now La Jinn, attack his face down monster with shadow magic!"
The Genie smiles, then sends a ball of magical energy at the face down monster, only to have it reflected back as a turtle with an emerald shell appears. (0/2000)
"Thank you, that was my Gem-Turtle," Kaiden says, reacing for his deck and taking a card. "And I get to take a second copy of Gem-Knight Fusion and add it to my hand."
"Fine, I end my turn there," Tevor says.
(K: 4600) - (T: 7000)
Okay, this doesn't look good, I have to draw the right card if I want to pull ahead here, Kaiden thinks, drawing a card, he glances at it and nods, sliding it into his disk. "My turn will consist of setting this card face down, and that is all."
"I will draw," Tevor says, drawing a card as the Duke of Demise slashes at him again. "Your face down card doesn't scare me, I summon Gil Garth !" He says, and a mechanical fiend carrying a large blade appears. (1800/1200) "Now, to destroy your last defense, Duke of Demise attack his Gem-Turtle!"
The Duke of Demise raises his rapier, and rushes forward towards the turtle.
"You should look before you leap, I reveal my trap card, Dimensional Prison!" Kaiden says, and the trap flips up as a crevasse appears in front of the Duke of Demise, drawing him into it before vanishing.
"And neither of your other monsters can even scratch my Turtle, so what else are you going to do?" Kaiden says with a smirk.
"I'll set this card face down, and end my turn," Tevor says.
(K: 4600) - (T: 6500)
Kaiden draws a card, while he had gotten rid of the Duke of Demise, he was still behind in points. "I play the copy of Gem-Knight Fusion I added to my hand and fuse together my Gem-Knight Tourmaline and my Gem-Knight Amber," he says, and two knights appear, one is yellow and isn't carrying a weapon, but has magical energy crackling between his fingers and the other is smaller, and carrying two crystaline daggers. "To fusion summon, my Gem-Knight Prismaura!"
The two monsters fly into a vortex together, and the monster that appears is a knight with white and gold armor, holding a shield in one hand and a lance in the other. (2450/1400)
"Now Prismaura, attack his Gil Garth with Lightning Lance!" Kaiden says as Prismaura's lance crackles with electricity as he charges at the mechanical fiend shattering it.
"Pathetic, is there anything else you want to do?" Tevor asks.
I can't get rid of his La Jinn right now, so I'll have to hope for the best, Kaiden says, glancing at the last card in his hand. "I'll end my turn there."
(K: 4600) - (T: 5750)
Tevor draws a card. "I drew Grand Tiki Elder," he says, drawing a second card. "This card doesn't qualify," he adds, putting it in his hand. "I'll set this card face down, and summon my Grand Tiki Elder in attack mode," he says, and a monster covered by a purple cloak and a mask with two long arms appears. (1500/800) "And that's it for my turn."
Why am I suddenly thinking about Admiral Ackbar? Kaiden thinks, drawing a card. "Okay then, I activate the effect of Prismaura, so I'll discard my Gem-Knight Obsidian from my hand..." he says, sliding the card into his graveyard slot. "Now I can destroy your La Jinn!"
There is a crack of lightning, and La Jinn shatters into tiny pieces. Tevor however remains unphased.
"And on top of that I can bring back my Gem-Knight Tourmaline!" Kaiden adds, and a yellow colored knight with crackling energy in his hands appears. (1600/1800)
"Pathetic," Tevor says.
"Now Prismaura, attack Grand Tiki Elder with Lightning Lance!" Kaiden says ignoring the comment, and the knight's lance crackles with electricity as he charges forward at the masked fiend. Suddenly a wave of energy flies out from around them, shattering both monsters. "What was that?"
"That was my trap card Hate Buster, which you triggered by attacking," Tevor says. "Anything else?"
"Yes, now that you're wide open, I'll attack you directly with Tourmaline!" Kaiden says, and the knight throws a ball of energy at Tevor. "And I'll end my turn there."
(K: 2150) - (T: 4150)
"Then its my draw," Tevor says, drawing a card and glancing at it, and then sliding it into his disk. "I play Swing of Memories to bring back my Feral Imp," he says, and a green furred monster with two wings on its back appears (1300/1400). "And I'll summon Headless Knight from my hand!" He adds, and a knight appears, this one has no head and is in silver armor with a shield and sword appears (1450/1700).
Okay, this doesn't make sense, why would he summon those two weak monsters? Kaiden thinks, then it hits him. Uh-oh...
"I combine these two monsters to form the overlay network!" Tevor says as the vortex appears in front of him and the two monsters fly into it. The monster that emerges is bizarre, it seems to be made out of a dark metal with massive hands while it crawls on all fours, its shoulders are surrounded by a spiked harness with bladed horns (1300/3100). "I summon, my Black Steel Guardian!"
"What the... that looks like Metal Guardian!" Kaiden says, surprised to see that. He had heard that Industrial Illusions was taking some of the older cards and giving them an update like this, but he hadn't expected to face one.
"That's right, my Black Steel Guardian was once Metal Guardian, but is now even more powerful," Tevor says. "First its defense points are the combined defense of the two monsters I used to overlay it. Second, you can't attack any of my other fiend type monsters as long as its on the field."
3100 defense, and I can only attack it? Kaiden thinks, starting to realize just how much trouble he was in.
"Since I have nothing I can attack with, I'll end my turn with one card face down," Tevor finishes, sliding a card into his disk.
Kaiden draws a card, that would help, but he had to get the right cards. "I play the spell card, Pot of Dichotomy, to use it I have to take 3 monsters with different types and shuffle them back into my deck," he says, taking Gem-Knights Obsidian, Sardonyx, and Prismaura and shuffing two of them into his deck and returning the third to his extra deck. "And after that, I can draw two more times, of course I can't attack this turn, but that doesn't matter."
"Draw all the cards you want, they won't help you," Tevor says as Kaiden draws two cards.
"We'll see about that, I'll switch Tourmaline to defense mode," Kaiden says, and the knight kneels in defense mode. "And I'll set this monster, face down," he adds, and another monster appears face down. "Your move."
Tevor draws a card, and shows it. "I drew an old favorite, my Summoned Skull!" He says, then draws again. "And my second Feral Imp," he says, drawing a third time, then a strange, strained smile crosses his face. "I play the spell card known as Ancient Rules, so I summon to the field my Summoned Skull!"
Lightning strikes the field and the iconic monster known for being in the deck of the famous King of Games appears with a cackle (2500/1200).
"And things are about to get worse for you, I play my face down card Birthright to bring back my Earl of Demise!" Tevor continues, and the rotting fiend nobleman appears (2000/700). "And I think I'll use another card, I'm sure you've been wondering what my Infernal Inquisitor does."
"The thought had crossed my mind," Kaiden growls.
"Every time you destroyed one of my fiends, it gained an authoritarian counter," Tevor explains. "And now I'm going to use two of them, one of them will increase the level of my Earl to 6," Tevor says.
This is insane, a second Xyz summoning? Kaiden thinks, he wasn't going to like this at all.
"I overlay my two fiends to summon this creature!" Tevor says, as the two monsters fly into the vortex. The monster that emerges is hideous, with no eyes and long teeth, with black skin and bony spurs jutting out of its knees and elbows, it appears with a terrifying roar (2200/1800). "My Savage Emperor of Yamimakani!"
Okay, this isn't good, Kaiden thinks. This was getting really out of hand, there had to be some way out of this.
"And I'll set one monster in defense mode," Tevor adds, as a face down monster appears in front of him. "Now my Savage Emperor, attack his Gem-Turtle with Savage Rend!"
The hideous fiend rushes forward and slashes through the monster, cackling as it does so.
"I'll end my turn there," Tevor finishes.
Okay, its now or never, I have to draw the right card, right now, Kaiden thinks, drawing a card, he then smiles. "My turn will simply consist of setting this card face down."
"Before you end your turn, I trigger my spell card, Fires of Doomsday, so I get two doomsday tokens," Tevor says, and two hideous black colored fiends appears (0/0 x2).
"Fine, that changes nothing, I end my turn," Kaiden says.
Tevor looks at him as he draws his card. "I sacrifice one of my tokens to set a monster in defense mode," he says, next turn he'd be able to summon an even more powerful monster. "Now my Savage Emperor, destroy his face down monster!" He says, and the fiend slashes through the monster that is revealed to be a small purple monster before it shatters.
Almost there... Kaiden thinks, looking at the card in his hand.
"I'll end my turn there, on my next turn its all over," Tevor says.
"Not if I get rid of your Xyz monsters," Kaiden says, drawing a card. "I'm activating the effect of one of my Gem-Knight Fusion cards, so I'll banish my Gem-Knight Lazuli to get it back," he says, taking the card out of graveyard and adding it to his hand. "And I'll play it, fusing Tourmaline with the Gem-Knights Sapphire and Emerald in my hand!"
As he puts the cards into his graveyard, a vortex appears in front of him and the three monsters fly into it. The monster that appears is a towering knight in silver armor, carrying a large sword encrusted with several gem stones (2900/2500 + 500).
"And that lets me summon the most powerful monster I have, Gem-Knight Master Diamond!" Kaiden says as the towering knight swings his sword.
"Very impressive, too bad he's not strong enough to defeat me, Tevor says with a grin. "This is far from over."
"Hmm, does seem like I miscounted... oh well, go trap card, Fragment Fusion, now I can fuse together Gem-Knights in my graveyard, so I'll banish these two..." Kaiden says, taking two cards out of his graveyard and putting them in his pocket. "I get to fusion summon again!"
The vortex appears again, and the monster that emerges this time is not what you'd expect. Instead of a knight, its a woman wearing a blue kimono with short blue hair and armor around her lower body (2400/1000). She and Master Diamond exchange glances, and nod at each other.
"So welcome to the field, my Gem-Knight Lady Lapis Lazuli!"
"So you managed to bring out your Master Diamond's girlfriend, big deal," Tevor says. "She won't help you, especially since any monster summoned by Fragment Fusion is destroyed at the end of the turn."
"That's true, but that gives me time to use her effect," Kaiden says, reaching for his extra deck and taking a card out, sliding it into his graveyard. "Now, you lose 500 life points for every special summoned monster on the field!"
"I what?" Tevor asks, looking surprised as daggers appear in Lapis Lazuli's hands and she tosses them at him.
"And that's a total of 2000 life points, bet you're wishing you hadn't summoned those Xyz monsters now," Kaiden says.
"This isn't over yet," Tevor says. "I'll still have life points left."
"I'll deal with that next turn," Kaiden says. "Now, Master Diamond, attack his Black Steel Guardian with Diamond Sword strike!"
Master Diamond raises his sword and rushes at the metallic fiend, slashing through it.
"Your turn Lapiz Lazuli, attack his Savage Emperor with your hidden blade attack!" Kaiden commands and the female monster motions and a blade emerges from her sleave and she runs forward, slashing through the fiend.
"I, get his effect, I can special summon his two overlay units," Tevor says as Summoned Skull and Duke of Demise appear kneeling in defense mode.
"I'll end my turn, which means Lapis Lazuli is destroyed," Kaiden says as the female monster shatters.
(K: 2150) - (T: 1950)
Tevor draws a card and curses his luck. He had hoped to get to summon his third Xyz monster, a powerful creature that would've limited Kaiden's options even more, but now that wasn't an option, all he could do now was stall for time until he had a better plan. "I will pass this turn," he says.
Kaiden draws a card, shaking his head. "You fought well, but here's where the duel ends."
"How are you going to win, I have more monsters than you do!" Tevor protests.
"Remember that monster I discarded last turn? It was my Gem-Knight Ruby, a very handy fusion monster, especially now, by banishing it I give my Master Diamond his effect," Kaiden says as Master Diamond starts to glow with red energy.
"And what does your Gem-Knight Ruby do exactly?" Tevor asks, dreading the answer.
"He deals piercing damage to my opponent, so time to end this, Gem-Knight Master Diamond, attack his last Doomsday Token with Diamond Blade attack!" Kaiden says, and the knight charges forward, slashing through the token, as Tevor's eyes go wide as if he wants to scream.
(K: 2150) - (T: 0)
Kaiden walks over to his opponent as the holograms vanish, picking up the flash drive before the dark elf can recover.
"Well, I see you haven't lost your touch, Kaiden," a voice says, and its then that Kaiden realizes he's had an audience. Arashi is standing there, leaning against his duel runner with a smile.
"Yeah, well he didn't make it easy," Kaiden says. "He said he was working for a crime syndicate, but didn't say which one."
"We have a few too many in this town," Arashi says, shaking his head and taking out a blue gem and Tevor vanishes in a flash. "If anything we can at least get answers out of him."
"He wagered this on our duel," Kaiden says, holding up the jump drive.
"Well then, lets get back to the mansion and see if we can find out what's on it," Arashi says, then nods. "Its good to have you back Kaiden."
"Its good to be back," Kaiden says with a nod, and with that the two drive off towards town.
I had heard of the Black Dragons before, a dangerous criminal organization that was infiltrating the town, but there was little we could actually do about it.
What did they have to do with these, Upholders? We had no idea, and I only had a single lead to go on.
If the Black Dragons where tied to Shadowkind, then the Shadowchasers would have to be the ones to investigate. And investigate they did.
But what they found was... well, you'll see soon enough.

And there you have it folks, after a really long wait (sorry about that), I've finally finished chapter 4.
Now, you've met all 4 main characters, the stage is set, and the curtain is about to rise on the real story.
Next chapter, Marie pays a visit to a club belonging to the leader of the Black Dragon Syndicate while the rest of the team tries to sneak in. However, first the team has to sneak past the guardian set up by the crime boss, and it won't be easy. What are they up against? Find out next time in, "Metal Guardian: Knowledge is not Power."
Also I know I said I was going to start something this chapter, but I don't have it ready yet, so I'll start it soon.
