Act I – Scene 2
The Thin Ice
Setting – Anzio, Italy, 1944, and Hotel Room, 1968.
(JONATHAN is still lying on the ground near downstage center. We hear a baby's cry as he pulls out a picture of his family from his uniform. He is near death. PINK is still on the platform above, in the same position.)
JONATHAN:
Mama loves her baby,
And daddy loves you too,
And the sea may look warm to you babe,
And the sky may look blue,
But ooooh babe,
Ooooh baby blue,
Ooooooh baby.
(He dies and is pulled offstage. PINK raises his head and is surrounded by a little more light.)
PINK:
If you should go skating,
On the thin ice of modern life,
(He stands up and walk down from his platform.)
Dragging behind you the silent reproach,
Of a million tear-stained eyes,
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice,
Appears under your feet,
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind,
With your fear flowing out behind you,
As you claw the thin ice.
(A solo riff plays and PINK begins to convulse, shake, and have a major seizure across the stage's floor. At the end of the riff, he stops, stands up, and begins to walk offstage.)
