A/N: Heya guys and girls! Thank you to everyone that has favourited, followed and reviewed. This chapter is really just a filler but I hope you lot like it. Again, Rick Riordan owns characters and quotes and practically everything PJO and HOO apart from my plot. Anyways, here is chapter 4.
The rest of the week was uneventful. I went to school. I went to class. I went home. The only interesting thing was our super sleuth efforts of finding out how dad knew Percy. We came up inconclusive.
Then the day came.
I arrived at the bus loop at exactly 7:45 and there was no bus or Percy in sight. Figures.
After another 5 minutes of waiting, the bus showed up. The doors opened and a chubby looking middle aged man stepped off and glowered at me.
"So which one are you? Jerry Greg or Peter Johnson?" He grunted at me, looking me up and down.
"I'm Jason Grace sir." I replied, confused. He just grunted again and ticked something on his list.
"Get in. And where's the other one?" He snapped at me as I passed.
"I don't know, sir."
I climbed onto the bus where there were a few students scattered around. There were two of each uniform and I noticed they were all sitting together.
Great.
I sat in one of the empty seats and I swear we waited another 10 minutes for Percy to arrive. When he did, he just stalked past the man waiting, grunting out his name on the way, and stormed onto the bus. He paused for a moment, taking in everyone and then scowling when he realised that the schools had to sit with their partner. When he finally looked at me, he gave me a sneer before chucking his bag next to mine and sitting on the seat next to me, although he was trying to keep as far away from me as possible.
The old man grumbled as he got on and shot Percy an annoyed look before signalling the bus driver to start driving.
We didn't utter a word to each other while the bus drove around town, picking up the kids from the other schools. As the last pair got on, the man stood up and started speaking to us.
"Hello, brats. I am Mr.D and I am the camp director. I am going to make this very clear. I only run this camp because it is my community service for drink driving multiple times. When we get to camp, you will meet Chiron, the activities director, and he will be the one actually running the camp. Note that there are year round campers there, who are campers who complete their schooling at the camp either because they can't go home or because the schools in their district don't cater to their needs. All of you will keep quiet on the bus drive, as I am hung over and I will personally set Mrs. O'Leary on you when we get to camp."
I had no idea what Mrs. O'Leary was but I was sure it would be a bad thing so I kept all my questions quiet.
Percy and I ignored each other for the whole ride. When we got closer, I noticed the change of scenery as white picket fences appeared, surrounding an expansive strawberry field. In them, there were several people wearing orange t-shirts, picking the strawberries and joking around. As we drove past them, they lifted their heads and watched us pass. Some even waved to us.
We turned into a driveway a small way up from the fields and pulled into the most beautiful place I have ever seen. An arch way with the words Camp Half-Blood running along the top stretched over the bus as we drove through. Next to the arch, a massive pine tree grew, standing out in amongst the trees around it. The road led down a hill and at the foot of it there was an expanse of different attractions to look at. You could see a glittering lake further down the hill and a massive amphitheatre to the left. On the right there were some volleyball courts and a big blue house. There were a bunch of kids at a station on the way down the hill, making statues and painting. Further to the left we could see a climbing wall towering over everything else. Looking past the lake you could see the blue-green of the sea and a small patch of sand, indicating a beach. From where the bus parked we could also see a great mess hall and a bunch of cabins.
I looked over to Percy when we stepped off the bus, only to see him looking around in wonder. I half felt like snorting at him but then I realised that that was what I was doing not 10 seconds before hand.
Campers stopped what they were doing to stare at us. Some of them smiled at us and some of them would laugh and point at us, as if they were better than us.
"Hello, hello." An old man wheeled over to us from the house in his wheelchair. He smiled at us in a friendly way and laughed as Mr. D stalked past him, muttering about children. "Welcome to Camp Half-Blood." He opened his arms wide before gesturing us to move forward, creating a semi-circle around him.
"I am Chiron and I will be the one who will be teaching you during your stay. You were all chosen from many other applicants and I congratulate you all. You are all here to improve your leadership skills, as well as to create lasting friendships and, of course, have fun. Now, over to you're the right you will see a bunch of cabins. Each cabin is dedicated to a different god or goddess and every new camper is initiated into one based on personality traits, strengths and weaknesses. For the duration of your stay you will be staying in a separate bunch of cabins. You will be rooming with your school mate."
My head whipped towards Percy and I saw his head do the same. His eyes narrowed at me, and for a second I thought he was going to complain but he kept his mouth shut and turned back to Chiron.
"You will also be split into two teams and every week there will be a new challenge that is team against team. Each win will give the winning team an advantage in the final challenge." Everyone began to mutter excitedly looking to their school mates and grinning. Percy seemed to both glare and smirk at me, obviously hoping we are on separate teams.
"I have called in all the cabin counsellors that either stay here over summer or are year round campers and they will be taking some of your classes. You will be in classes with the rest of the year round campers and doing the same work as them as well as eating with them. However, you are not required to do the assessments."
He finished his spiel with a clap before wheeling around and beginning our tour.
He showed us everything that we could see from the bus before and then took us further to the right to the buildings we couldn't see before. He showed us the arena where several people were going at it with incredibly sharp and incredibly real swords.
"You will be trained to use them. You will also be trained to be careful because you will be using real swords." Chiron had explained. Percy had a grin on his face as he watched it. I could practically see my murder being played out in his mind.
He also showed us the armoury, where all the sharp instruments of pain were stored, and the forge, where all the sharp instruments of pain were created.
The next place was the stables, where he introduced us to the horses, most of whom sniffed at us and bumped us with their heads for pats. One black horse stayed up the back and refused to come near anyone. There was a big black dog chained at the entrance to the stables as well, who growled at everyone that passed it. We then learnt that was Mrs. O'Leary.
He pointed out the woods, but didn't take us into them.
"We only ever go into the woods in groups. It is easy to get lost and there are dangerous creatures in there." He looked at all of us separately, warning us.
We then came to a smaller lot of cabins.
"Here is where you will be staying. You will be staying in the cabin with your school mate. I should probably say, this camp is different than others, that is to say each cabin has both girls and boys in them. There is no separation, but, of course, there are boys and girls bathrooms. You will find girls bathrooms on the right of the bathroom block and males on the left." He pointed out a concrete structure at the end of the cabins. "There are showers in there as well."
He then proceeded to point out which cabin we would be staying in.
"You can have the rest of the day to settle in and explore. Dinner is at 7pm. You will hear a conch shell that will signal the when you are to walk down." He begun to turn away but stopped on a sudden thought.
"Oh! I almost forgot. All technology to me please. This is a strictly no technology zone." That received several groans that he just laughed at and everyone handed over their phones. "Once a month you will get them back to call your parents but that will be the extent of it. Tomorrow you will be split into your teams. Now, go. Have fun." With that, he turned on his wheels and left.
I walked into my cabin and was about to dump my stuff on one of the beds when Percy came storming in, thankfully throwing his stuff on the other bed.
After a few moments of charged silence, I finally spoke up.
"Percy, we will be living together for two months. Don't you think we should at least try to get along?"
To my surprise he didn't start yelling at me the same way he did last time I tried to talk to him. Instead he sighed and turned to me, looking slightly tired.
"It's just not possible Grace. So please, stop trying."
And with that he stalked out of the cabin, leaving me really confused.
