(Zexion's POV)
Demyx bounced up, rushing over to the two girls and engulfing them in a bear hug. I suppressed a wince; I knew what it was like being hugged by an overenthusiastic Demyx, and I did not envy the girls for being on the receiving end of such a hug.
"Hi!" he bubbled eagerly. "I'm Demyx!"
The redhead wiggled free of his grasp, arms raised as if in self-defense, before her companion pushed herself away from Demyx to join them.
The dishwater blond visibly deflated. "You rejected my hug."
Not everyone likes hugs, Demyx.
"Sorry about that. Kat and Rosie don't really like strangers," Aqua explained.
Vivi snorted. "Kat and Rosie don't like people period."
"Vivi!" Aqua snapped waspishly, turning to glare at the blunette.
"What?" the spunky girl protested. "It's true."
"You make it sound like they're antisocial."
Oh, brilliant. They were fighting again.
Aqua turned to Demyx, intentionally ignoring Vivi. "Once they warm up to you, they'll be okay."
This prompted another snort from Vivi. "We'll see about that."
Okay. Time to step in before another fight started.
"Which one is Katrina-san and which is Rosalie-san?" I inquired.
"Oh, Kat's the redhead," Aqua replied. "Rosie's the one with black hair."
A look of surprise flitted across Katrina's features once she got a good look at Demyx, but the expression vanished as swiftly as it had appeared, replaced by an intent, studious look.
Demyx stared at her in return, suppressed interest, surprise, and confusion glinting in his eyes. I made a mental note to ask him about it later.
Rosie grabbed Kat's arm, pulling her down and onto the floor. The smaller girl flailed her free arm, off-balance, and nearly dropped the small book in her free hand.
"Girls, this is Demyx," Vivi stated. "And Emo Boy over there is Zexion."
I shot her a frigid look. "I am not an emo," I stated flatly.
"Sure," Vivi "agreed," nodding. "Keep telling yourself that."
"Vivi," Aqua scolded, "don't tease friends you haven't even made yet."
Oh, brilliant. Here comes another fight. Do those two ever stop?
"I have no interest in being friends with her," I grumbled, the "Emo Boy" comment cementing my opinion on the irritating girl.
Katrina pushed herself up suddenly, handing her book to Rosie, and walked over to me.
I stared up at her, forcing myself not to fidget from the invasion of my personal space. "Did you need something, Katrina-san?"
Instead of responding, she reached out and began toying with the chain hanging from my hoodie, a small smile playing across her lips.
Vivi immediately burst out laughing. "Look at that," she chortled between fits of laughter. "Kat made a friend!"
I shot her a frigid look, which she blatantly ignored. Forcing myself not to twitch, I turned back to Katrina, all "emotion" draining out of my face. Calmly, I pushed her hand away from the chain.
Katrina's face fell. Without so much as a word, she walked sadly back over to Rosalie and sat down.
Abruptly, Vivi stopped laughing, voice and expression adopting a deathly serious tone. "Don't deny her friendship, Zexion. It's hard to come by."
"Sorry, Zexion," Aqua apologized, a faint smile on her face. "Kat likes shiny things."
I was suddenly aware of another unprompted invasion of personal space, this time by Vivi. She, too, began playing with the chain.
"I'm touching it," she taunted, smirking.
My eye twitched.
SMACK!
Vivi yelped, withdrawing her hand and pouting at me. "You didn't hit Kat," she whined.
"Katrina-san did not play with it to irritate me," I retorted flatly.
Fighting down another twitch, I turned to face a stare I had been uncomfortably aware of for the past few minutes.
Its source, Katrina, was still eyeing the chain like a dog would eye a treat—wide-eyed, hopeful, and pleading.
I suppressed a groan. Her puppy eyes were even more powerful than those of Demyx or Roxas, probably because of the emotions behind them. Resolutely turning away from the gaze, I lifted a hand to unhook the chain.
'I cannot believe I am doing this…'
Holding up my chain, I released the shiny string of metal beads and chain links, dropping them towards the ground, only to watch as Katrina snatched it from the air before it was halfway to the ground.
Rolling my eyes, I settled in my spot and set about making a new chain. With luck, if I let her keep that chain, she'd be happy with the one I had just given her and wouldn't go after the new one.
Much to Demyx's evident amusement, Katrina plopped herself down near me, albeit not directly next to me, and Rosalie followed her lead.
I eyed the two, unable to ignore the two girls in my peripheral vision.
Evidently, Katrina had noticed my gaze. "Hey, it's nice to meet you," she bubbled eagerly. "I'm Katrina Moretti, but you can call me Kat. Most people do."
I stared back at her, face impassive save for a single arched eyebrow. "Hello, Katrina-san," I deadpanned in return.
She smiled brightly at me, then turned her attention back to the glinting metal in her hands.
The other girl smiled at Katrina. "Hi, Zexion," she began quietly, turning to me. "I'm Rosalie; you can call me Rosie."
"Something wrong?" I heard Demyx ask Aqua.
"Kat and Rosie don't usually warm up to people they've just met," Aqua explained.
"It's probably because Zexion gave Kat something shiny," Vivi pointed out. "As for Rosie… she followed Kat's lead."
"Are they close?" Demyx inquired.
"Very close," Aqua confirmed. "They're close enough to be sisters. People often assume they're related, despite how different they look."
"I swear, Kat's the only person Rosie has a soft spot for," Vivi agreed.
"Vivi, they've known each other for ages," Aqua pointed out. "Longer than we've known them."
"What are the rest of us, then?" Vivi demanded. "Chopped liver?"
There was no response to that.
