Smaller On The Outside
Silence. That's all there was. Cold silence. Even the Doctor wouldn't speak as his suspicion grew deeper about Damon. Why would Damon suddenly ask him what he was? And the fact he said 'what' not 'who' made him think it's best not to trust anyone in this town.
The Doctor stood still at the door; all he could think about was leaving as soon as possible to reduce the risk of getting noticed. Throughout his 1200 years of telling ordinary people what he is and what he does knowing he can gain their trust with that information, has now suddenly changed as he may regret having told someone who holds a greater secret of their own which could put the Doctor's life in danger.
He and Rory watched Damon escort Amy down the corridor which lead to the living room as they can see from the corner of their eyes. 'A lady's man.' Thought Rory, seeing as he took Amy in first and not all of them. They exchanged looks at each other.
Damon strutted himself back in the corridor and startled them both. "What are you standing around for?"
"Uh, ok..." Rory muttered to himself as he and the Doctor awkwardly walked into the living room and saw Amy relaxed on the couch with a drink in her hand.
"Hey! Come sit down with me, boys! You have a really nice house, Damon." Amy spoke cheerfully, Damon smirked. Something didn't seem right.
"Thank you, Amy." Damon took a sip out of his glass and glanced a look over to the Doctor and Rory.
"Amy?" Rory asked worried by her attitude towards them. They knew for sure she wasn't this enthusiastic before, had Damon given her something.
Damon answered for Amy, "She's fine, nothing like a little bit of bourbon can't help bring the mood up." The Doctor stiffly manoeuvred his eyes at Rory; he could see that he was not happy. Hesitating slightly, Rory slumped down on the couch next to Amy and gave one big sigh at her.
The Doctor however, stood absolutely still, he didn't trust Damon and he seemed like he was going to be trouble if he got in his way. Right now he was eager to just get back to his TARDIS and repair her so they can get off this small town before anything bad happened to them.
He had a good look at the room, there was a lot of antique stuff around and the furniture looked old. Really old. He rolled his eyes to the ceiling and he could tell from the wood that the should be at least 60+ years old. He wondered why two young adults would live in such a big house all by themselves.
Damon walked past the Doctor and sat in the opposite chair totally relaxed. The Doctor felt as if someone's ghost had just walked through him, sending a cold shiver down his spine. 'This is not a good feeling', he thought. Somehow he felt a bit sick and Damon's presence didn't give off a good sign.
"So you been hanging out with my baby bro. Gotta say, I thought you'd find someone with a little more...humour." They all exchanged looks at each other, completely lost in Damon's words. "Don't get me wrong, my brother's great if you're a girl who likes an interesting, exotic and deep kind of guy but that's just the boring side to him. You should see the other side to his personality it's much more fun." Damon as always likes to manipulate people into thinking that Stefan can't be trusted.
"Then why don't you tell us Stefan's 'other side'?" Damon smirked, he got them right where he wanted, he wanted to make them afraid.
"You really want to know?" He challenged.
The Doctor leaned in, "I really do."
"Well that's a story for another time. But I'll tell you something. He can change as easily as turning a light switch off." Damon snapped his fingers indicating the speed of the switch. "It's as easy as that."
They all felt worried now and slightly scared like a 4 year old who's just been told a scary story and don't think they'll make it through the night.
Just as the Doctor was about to break the silence he was disturbed by the noise of Elena and Stefan coming down the stairs. He pursed his lips together and relaxed his back against the wall, he felt more comfortable around them two but that didn't mean he trusted them completely. He still tried to ponder on the words Damon said about Stefan, so many questions that could lead to dangerous things.
"Hey guys, I hope Damon hasn't scared you too much." Elena spoke. Her voice was so innocent and sweet and she had a smile that could cheer someone up. The Doctor liked her.
"No no he's a real...charmer." He lied.
"Really? For once he's actually nice? Well that's a start from being a prick." Amy sniggered and the Doctor's eyes widened. Maybe Elena wasn't too fond of him as well. So many questions...
The Doctor could also see that Stefan and Damon weren't that close judging by the great distance they were from each other. Probably a lot of history between the two but he wasn't sure between the relationship of Elena and him.
"We've got a spare room for you guys or would you prefer separate rooms?" Stefan asked. The Doctor let out a small laugh and looked at his Ponds.
"I think Amy and Rory will be needing to share a room, me however can find somewhere else where I'll be more..comfortable."
"Nope, there's plenty of rooms here for you to stay in and it might be dangerous going back to your..." Stefan thought real hard before answering that, he didn't want Damon knowing what he was. "transport." The Doctor walked off into the other room and Stefan followed, he could sense that he wanted a word with him.
Once they're alone, Stefan closed the door behind him, making sure that they wouldn't be heard. "Stefan, I appreciate you doing this for us, for them, but I really think we should be getting on our way now."
"What do you mean?"
"We really aren't meant to be here. This is just an accident but if feel there's too many secrets lurking in this town and normally I'm curious and excited to investigate more but...-"
"But you feel this is way beyond exploring, even for you. You feel like something unchangeable will happen to one of you and it will be your fault. You want to leave to avoid it from happening." Stefan finished off his sentence and a stunned Doctor, now unable to respond in words, stands in a silent awe. It fascinated him to find that Stefan can see right through him. Could he read his mind? Or was it just coincidence?
"Doctor, if you feel you can't trust anyone, then at least trust me. I'll make sure that nothing happens to you or your friends. And plus, there's no danger here in Mystic Falls." The Doctor nodded but still didn't say a word.
"I heard you and Damon talking earlier, if you want my advice, don't trust anything he says. He likes to turn people against me." He added. If Stefan wanted him to trust him then he had to make sure that Damon doesn't get into his head.
"Why?" Quickly spoke the Doctor, his voice was sharp, determined to have reasons why not trust certain people.
"Let's just say, we don't get along as well. It's complicated." Stefan made it seem like an ordinary thing for brothers not to be as close as they used to. "We should get back." He changed the subject.
"Yes, we should." The Doctor agreed. They walked back into the living room like nothing happened but Stefan never thought of the idea that Damon could have been listening.
Damon didn't look at them; he remained faced forward and gave a small smile. "Where have you two been?"
"We were just talking." Stefan assured him so he wouldn't get suspicious.
Silence entered the room again for a minute or two and this time Amy was the one to break it.
"Well this has been nice, if not slightly awkward but I think me and Rory should turn in for the night. Thank you for letting us stay here." She grabbed Rory's hand and headed for the stairs, Rory having no choice since his arm was being dragged, followed her.
"We made you a room first corridor and towards the end, it's not hard to miss." Stefan called as they were making their way up, Amy nodded with a smile.
"Goodnight Doctor." She spoke towards him.
He looked at her, his eyes gleaming. "Goodnight Amelia."
Once they retreated upstairs the Doctor's smile faded slowly knowing that he was stuck in a room with people he'd only just met. 'Come on Doctor; just act your normal self. Don't let them get suspicious.' He thought.
"Well!" The Doctor clapped his hands together while backing up. "Thank you for your hospitality but I should get going."
"Going? Going where? They have another spare room for you." Elena wondered why he would jwleave now. And where to?
"No no! It's fine, really. I..er...got somewhere else to stay." He lied terribly from their expressions he feared they didn't believe him.
"Well that's a load of crap otherwise you wouldn't be here in the first place." Damon pointed out; the Doctor let out a small groan and crossed his arms.
'Great! Now they're gonna force me to stay here!' Quickly he put on a smile and stiffened his breathing, he felt a bit embarrassed that he tried to get out of staying there and obviously they were not fooled easily.
"You're staying for one night then you can go on your own way tomorrow, I won't stop you. Sounds like a deal?" Stefan clearly stated.
The Doctor thought about his proposal, it did seem reasonable and what would be the harm for staying for one night.
"Fine. Sure, ok. One night. I can survive that." He gave in. "I think." He added whispering to himself.
"Elena, I think you should show him to his room." Stefan whispered in her ear, just to make sure he wouldn't hear.
"Ok, it's the one opposite right?"
"Yeah, the one opposite Amy and Rory." Throughout their whispering conversation, the Doctor narrowed his eyes trying to figure out what they were saying. But maybe, just maybe he heard something.
Elena turned her attention to the Doctors, "Come on, I'll take you to your room."
"Thank you, Elena." Elena leaded him upstairs and without looking back at Stefan or his brother, he followed straight after her.
The Doctors' room was right opposite Amy and Rory, he knew it was theirs since it was the only door closed and plus, Stefan mentioned where it was.
Opening his door, the Doctor took four steps inside and observed the room while Elena stood at the door watching him carefully. It didn't take him long to memorise every object in the room and already he noticed something was missing.
"I guess I'll leave you to it." She headed out the door but didn't get far since the Doctor stopped her.
"Wait! Elena..um ha..have you had weird feelings about- no wait, hang on, have YOU got your own room here?" He changed the subject quickly as another question entered his mind. "Of course you do but you shouldn't have, you obviously have a house yourself, so why stay here?"
Confusion hit her, was he always like this?
"Erm, no I don't. I mean I do occasionally stay here but I don't have my own room." She answered nervously, brushing a hair behind her ear.
"Then where do you sleep?"
She didn't answer, only shifted her to the right and back, his eyes widened finally getting the point. "Oh, I see. So you and Stefan are pretty close then?"
"Yeah, we had some trouble in the past but we got through it. It wasn't an easy time for me because a lot of...bad things happened and certain people changed. People who were very close to me." Suddenly she chuckled and shook her head. "Why am I telling you this? I only just met you tonight."
"Well I've just got one of those faces; people never stop blurting out their stories when I'm around." She opened her mouth to respond but closed it shut and gave him a smile as she left the room.
He took this chance to look around properly and first place he went to was the bookshelf. Since he's being forced to stay here, he might as well inspect the room until he finds something that's worth staying for.
He scuffled around the books, until he finds something interesting. Nothing. All he saw was old books, probably from around early 1900s. He skimmed read through all the pages of each and every book and still nothing. He growled in frustration, walked away and jumped on the bed with his hands behind his head.
Back downstairs, Stefan and Damon were bickering about their so-called guests living in their house. Elena stayed well out of it, sitting in the living room listening to them in the kitchen.
"I don't trust them!" Damon yelled back harshly.
"You don't trust anyone!" Stefan replied back instantly.
"Exactly! Because I know how it's going to end up. See that's the difference between you and me, Stefan, you can't say no to someone cause you're just too kind then they get close and bam! That's when your life gets put on the line and I'm the one that has to save you! That weird bow tie wearing guy is not human and it's only a matter of time before he finds out what we are!"
"He won't. I've got it under control. They're leaving tomorrow; we've just got to wait until then."
Suddenly realisation hit Damon when he remembered what room he gave the Doctor. "You said to Elena to take him to the room opposite the...couples."
"Yeah, so? What has that got to do with this?"
"The room at the end is where you bury all your dark years in! Don't you think he's gonna find one of your best friends?" Stefan looked at him confused. "You know, one of your silly little diaries, that you talk to cos you never have anyone else to tell these secrets of yours. I know you keep all your spare diaries in that room, Stefan!"
Stefan's expression was one that could possibly burn down a building.
He crossed his arms and sighed. "Damon, I think you and I both know who is better at keeping secrets," Damon rolled his eyes, "and no, he won't find them because me and Elena already cleared out that room before he went in there. And most of them are in my room anyway." Damon paused and smiled sarcastically.
"Ok." He simply said in a soft voice, turning away from him.
"'Ok'?"
Damon turned his head around again. "Yeah, ok. You do what you think is right. You know, I think you should make them breakfast in the morning, better yet show them around! Let them make themselves comfortable." He pushed.
"Damon, listen-"
"No you listen!" He snapped. "There is something not right about them, they are up to something and we don't know what! You know what happens when someone new mysteriously turns up in town, so don't think for a second that they are leaving tomorrow!" Showing an angry expression on his face, he left the kitchen making sure he had the last word.
Later on during the night, the Doctor found boredom, Amy and Rory were asleep and he had nothing to investigate. Even though he didn't want to but being stuck in a room all night has changed his mind about it, he was ready to engage and become involved.
Before he noticed something was already missing from this room now he remembered what he was looking for. On one of the shelves there was a huge gap between a few books; half the shelf was empty. Obviously there used to be books lying there seeing the dust outline of a book or books.
Putting that aside and out of his mind for a moment he focused on another thing. "I have to get out of this room!" He muttered to himself. Slowly he crept outside his room and down the corridor; he was just about to reach the stairs when he heard voices muttering from the distance.
Hesitating to ignore it, another urge wanted him sneak around and spy on the voices he could barely hear. So he took a risk and followed the noise straight down a different corridor which held a few more rooms.
His silent footsteps crept slowly down the corridor until he stopped at a door that was slightly opened. He peered inside and saw Elena and Stefan sitting on the bed looking frankly worried. He listened in on their conversation.
"I'm sorry." Elena looked at him. "About before. With Damon." Elena realised what he was apologising for, she gave a single nod and sat on her knees on the bed putting her hand on his.
"It's ok, Damon will get over it at some point. You know how it goes, he'll leave for a couple of hours, make bad decisions then forget all about it the next day."
"I know. I know what he's like." But she could see that something was still bothering him.
"Then what is it?"
"What he said before...is true."
She gave a guess at what he was implying. "About.. the Doctor?"
Stefan nodded, the Doctor narrowed his eyes. What was true about him that they knew? "No matter how much he wants to, he's not going to leave tomorrow. He's gonna find something that's worth investigating and it will lead him closer to us."
"You think he's going to find out?"
"He's not human, so whatever alien he is... It will be only a matter of time before he finds out what we are."
"He won't. Ok? And if he does, we'll get through it, we always do." She comforted him by rubbing his shoulders. The Doctor having heard all this left quickly, but not realising he creaked the floor doing so.
Stefan and Elena heard the creak outside the door but she let Stefan see what it was. He looked outside but no one was about, it made him think that someone was listening the whole time only he would have noticed in the first place.
In Amy and Rory's room, the door slowly creaked opened but making sure it didn't wake both the Ponds. A small shadow was cast over their bed, then suddenly Amy felt something brush against her leg, she opened her eyes and gave a small shriek when she saw a figure pop up in her face.
Rory quickly awoke rubbing his eyes.
"Guys!"
The figure revealed to be the Doctors, Amy was left breathing heavily but relieved.
"Doctor! You bleeding scared me half to death!"
"Sorry."
"I thought we had a rule about the bedroom!" Rory yawned barely able to keep his eyes open.
"That doesn't matter! What matters is that we have got to get out of here right now! Come on Ponds!" He jumped off their bed and threw their clothes on top of them. "Get dressed. We've got to go!" He rushed; Amy could see that he was panicking, really panicking. What has got him all riled up?
"Doctor, slow down! What are you talking about?"
"They know more than they say! And they think I'm onto them, which means they're hiding something big too!" He whispered harshly, while pacing around, scratching his head anxiously.
"Hiding what?" Rory asked now looking intrigued.
"That's the thing, I don't know! But I think If I find out then it won't end well for all of us. They are something different. That's why I want to leave!" Now he looked really worried, Amy thought he was taking it a tad too far.
"Doctor, I think you need to get your head straight, sleep it off. You haven't seemed yourself since the crash landing. Maybe you hit your head too hard." She yawned. Was she serious right now? He really needs his Ponds to listen to him for once, something wasn't right.
"You know, Amy's right. Ever since we got here, you seemed a bit...iffy." Rory agreed with her.
"Iffy?!"
"Yeah I mean, normally you would engage in new...locations or planets and you would be bouncing off the walls and investigating. But ever since we met Stefan and Elena you...I dunno." The Doctor felt betrayed that his companions didn't trust him, even Amy when he thought that she would believe him of all people.
Rory he expected it from but not from his Amelia. 'If only River was here, she would believe me.' He thought.
"Rory, Amy, I need you to trust me, it's never been more important."
"But you don't always tell us the truth." That broke him.
"I am telling the truth! Amelia, please." The 'please' made her feel even more guilt; she looked down avoiding his words.
"I'm sorry, Doctor. But I think you should go back to bed. We'll talk in the morning."
His expression grew dark, almost filled with anger. "No. No. If you want to stay here then that's fine! But I'm getting out of here! I'm going back to the TARDIS." Amy's eyes widened as she watched him head for the door. Was he actually serious? Is he..scared?
"Doctor, wait!" He wouldn't listen. "Doctor!" With a slam of the door he was out, they couldn't believe he just left them there.
Right now the Doctor didn't care who was downstairs or still awake, he just wanted to leave. Angrily he raced down the stairs and out the door, completely ignoring the fact Damon was relaxing on the couch in the parlour.
Out in the cold dead woods, the Doctor stumbled his way back to his ship, he didn't feel guilty for leaving his Ponds behind if anything they should have listened to him. While trying to remember where he left his TARDIS, he was mimicking lines that were previously said by everyone but now he was only answering with what was really on his mind.
"Hit my head too hard?! Maybe I was out for a little bit longer but that doesn't mean I go dreaming up my own suspicion about people! There is something not right!" He muttered to himself as he was the only company he had around.
Somehow he liked talking to himself; it was more peaceful than talking to someone who didn't have a clue what he was going on about.
"And since when have I been acting iffy? I'll admit I was excited at the start but I don't just turn from that to..iffy!" He carried on walking with his hands in pockets but the one thing he should have been wondering was, is he really alone?
Someone was following him only he didn't know, whoever it was they were keeping their distance well.
The Doctor mumbled to himself, "Humans. They're so...predicable." He stopped and looked further into the woods, and just about saw a box figure a few metres forward, hidden behind the trees. "Ah, there you are!"
Quickly he ran towards it minding his step along the way. When he finally got to his ship he gave her a quick stroke down the keyhole. "Hello old girl, did you miss me?"
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his key, with a click of the lock the door opened and he jumped inside.
Damon's perspective:
A way to end the night; relaxing on the couch, drinking some bourbon. Perfect. No noise, no disturbances and no annoying guests running around.
Although it was quiet, which was nice, I wanted get out. I could go compel myself a couple of girls, only I did that before and it got turned into a total buzzkill. I was sitting in the parlour just minding my own business until I heard rough footsteps rushing down the stairs.
I got up and stood in the doorway and saw the Doctor storming out. Huh, what's got him in a bad mood? I'm so tempted to follow him but...wait there are no buts. I wanted to get out of the house and that's exactly what I'm doing, just got to keep my distance though.
I sped up right behind him, he didn't get far, and it was easy to track him even though he's not human but he's still got a beating heart or hearts.
I wanted him to be scared so I purposely made a few twigs snap while following. He wasn't paying attention. I guess he's really not in the mood and why was he talking to himself? That's not normal; well he isn't normal so it makes sense.
He was running now to a small figure in the distance. I stood behind a tree observing his movements. As he ran a bit further down I had to catch up by getting sinisterly close.
I got a better view to what he was standing in front. Was the hell was a Public Call Box? I have heard about them being around in the 1960s England but I never realised what they would actually look like.
He went inside. I wanted to go in there after him but it looked cramped, maybe if I got in there quick enough I could snap his neck before he could even turn around.
No. Stefan would hate me, I can live with that. But Elena would hate me too...
So I waited.
And waited.
A good couple of hours went by, I wasn't sure how many but it felt like forever, what could he possibly be doing in a small box for ages? Actually I don't really want to know.
I sat down by the tree and looked up at the sky, no clouds. It was clear, just then I heard the door squeak open, my head turned as I saw him looking very happy. He also had a small object in his hand; it had a green light at the end and made a funny wiring noise. He flipped it in the air and put it inside his jacket. Do you mean to tell me that I waited hours just to have him bring out some silly toy?! Nah, there's gotta be more.
He made his way back but I didn't follow this time, I wanted to see what was inside that box of his. As he got a good distance away from me I raced up to the doors and looked at it seamlessly. I tried to open it but it wouldn't budge, he must have the key then.
I got impatient, so with a punch the doors...still didn't open. Huh, they must be strong so I tried another thing. I used all my strength and with one powerful swing I kick the doors. With luck the doors flung open and I couldn't believe my eyes.
Inside was a whole room! It was orangey yellow and had a big round thing in the middle but there was smoke coming from it. The floor was glass and there was multiple stairs going in different directions.
"Huh, smaller on the outside." I let my eyes wonder about and then a smile appeared on my face. I tried to walk inside but it wouldn't let me, like I wasn't invited in. Then it hit me, the Doctor owns this place.
"Well, well, looks like someone has got a bigger secret of their own."
