Days drolled on until it was finally graduation day. Another great class of proper young ladies were ready to be presented to England. Jane had never been more proud of her daughter. Tarzan didn't really understand the significance of the ceremony, but was proud none the less. Jonathan did not really care at all. Reporters from several newspapers had caught wind that the "Princess of the Jungle" was graduating from a finishing school, and had to come be the first with the story. Kala was amazed with how many had come just to see her. After the ceremony, many people were lined up to talk to the family, though Jane did most of the talking. One of the reporters Tarzan and Jane recognized. "Ed? Ed Burroughs?"
"It's nice to see you guys again. I was here on business and heard about the Lord of the Jungle in England, thought I'd come say hi."
"It's certainly been long enough. I never thought we would see you again. How have you been?" Jane inquired.
"Great. Wrote a few books. Made quite a bit of money off of 'em. I see you two are doing quite well."
"Yes, well it's been nice seeing you again."
While their parents were talking, Jonathan noticed Kala talking with one of the younger journalists, who must have been around 20 by his dark hair and bright eyed look. His thin mustache and beard on the end of his chin also told of his youth. Just by first glance, it appeared that the two were really hitting it off. "Hey, Kala, Mom and Dad are almost ready to head home."
"Oh Jonathan, meet Mr. Henry Wesson. He is here for the London Journal. Henry, this is my younger brother, Jonathan."
"It's nice to meet you, young man. I've heard great things about your family. For the longest while I thought they were just legends, then I'm sent here to get an interview from the jungle man himself."
"Our father, I presume?" the younger man asked.
"Yes."
Kala had a thought, "I could help you. I'm sure it would be no problem at all."
"Well, I wouldn't want to impose,"
"Oh no, I insist. As my personal guest." The man gave a sigh. What am I thinking? He thought before allowing himself to go with her. She instantly presented him to her parents. "Mother, Father, this is Henry, Henry Wesson. He is a journalist from the London Journal."
"Well, it's nice to meet you Mr. Wesson."
"Please, call me Henry. Mr. Wesson was my father."
"Henry was wondering if he could get an interview."
"Well, I don't see why not."
Tarzan, Jonathan, and Henry sat down in the living room while Jane and Kala went to the kitchen to prepare refreshments.
"So, what do you want to know?" Tarzan went straight to the point.
"Well, what is there to know?"
"A lot if you ask the right questions."
"Okay. How did you get to Africa?" Henry asked, getting out paper to take notes.
"I don't remember. I know what the gorillas have told me about how they found me, and what I have found in the treehouse that my parents built."
"You didn't know you're parents atall?"
"No, just the Gorrilla that raised me."
"Would that also be who you named your daughter after?"
"Yes."
"How did you meet Jane?"
"She and her father had come to Africa to study the gorillas. I had been venturing through old nesting areas and found Jane running from the baboons."
Jane brought in a tray of small finger sandwiches. "A rather dreadful experience, the way I remember it. I will never forget the one that took my shoe. He never did give it back."
Henry was rather amused. "What happened next?"
"At first I didn't even know what to think. I was up in this huge tree with a wild man with no sense of personal space," Jane remembered. Kala came in and took a seat, enjoying the stories. Some she had heard before, but also some details and stories that had been left out over the years.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I don't think he really knew what to make of me, either. Rather than being afraid, he wanted to... explore, so to speak. He wanted to see how I worked, by playing with my toes, and such. At first it was awkward, really. I was a proper English lady, I was always taught not to allow a man to do the things that Tarzan was trying to. So I kicked him away, and he still came back. It was like he saw some similarities between us, and started to connect the dots. He brought me back to my camp and ran off into the jungle with some gorillas."
"The gorillas didn't like new humans, or hairless apes as Kerchak called us."
"Who's Kerchak?"
"He was the leader of the gorillas before Tarzan."
"He wasn't very fond of me, but I still made attempt after attempt to gain his approval. I finally got it right before he died."
"So, how did the gorillas take you two getting married?"
"Well, by that time the gorillas had clearly warmed up to me and Daddy. Tarzan had started teaching us Gorilla so that we could communicate with them. Eventually, I moved into the treehouse that Tarzan's parents had built. That would be where we all call home."
"Why didn't your father accompany you back to England? Surely he has old colleagues he would want to see."
Jane's face washed over with despair. "Daddy died last year, of a heart-attack."
"Oh. Well, I'm sorry to hear that. Do you have any family left, here in England?"
"Not that I'm aware. Even if I did, they never expressed any concern before. As far as I am concerned, this is all the family that I have left and this is all the family that I need." Kala noticed a spark of pride in her mother's eyes.
Henry glanced down at Jane's dress and noticed marks on her arms. "Ms. Porter, if I may, what happened to you arms?"
"Oh, just came with the job I suppose. I was protecting Kala and Jonathan from a leopard, when they were infants."
The young journalist turned to the younger people in the room. "So, what was it like growing up? It's obvious your family really cares about you."
"Quite similarly to our father's childhood, the difference being that Mother and Grandfather made sure we were well cultured and educated. We knew the ways of the jungle but also that things were different in England and America and China. We definitely had our share of animal friends. Being in the jungle, we had an interesting mix of friends. All of which would always protect us if ever the need arose, and vice versa. I'm pretty sure our friends and father were the only reasons we made it out of a few situations. And of course Mother."
"Do you two have any interesting stories to share with England?"
The two looked at each other. Jonathan didn't say anything. Kala on the other hand, caught a similar spark that her mother had had. "Tell you what, if England wants to hear our stories so badly, they can come find us."
