I have been trying to make chapters longer as well so it may also take longer because of that reason as well.
I appreciate you guys enjoying the story so far and I hope you will enjoy it as I continue to update (because I very much miss writing things). So, enjoy chapter 3 and I hope all of you will R&R~
Chapter 3:
Two months passed before they had even come remotely close to the village they needed to be at. They were running low on supplies by this point and the journey had been rather treacherous for them. Creatures of a strange existence had attacked them several times and it was hard to keep anyone from getting injured when they were constantly attacked by those creatures; creatures that seemed to have a mind of their own and were rather intelligent at that. These creatures were organized, too organized to be considered normal; or at least that's what Romulus believed. After all, those things weren't normal but this theory seemed too ridiculous, even to him. He softly sighed before he straightened himself out again. He needed to stay focus on the task at hand.
"There it is, General," Amadeus commented as he pointed to the small village not far from where they were. Romulus looked up and saw it there, the village they had spent months trying to get to. His amber color orbs grazed over the area, noticing that this village couldn't be more than a few feet in all directions; but it was hard to tell from where he was standing to know for sure.
"Remember, we're here for one thing only and, so, do not hurt any of the villagers. Do I make myself clear?" Romulus would normally let his men do what he wanted, but this wasn't the time or the place for something like that. They needed to find the woman they were looking for and get out of there as soon as they were able.
"Yes, sir!" all of them resounded in unison. Romulus nodded before he slowly led his men into the small village. Almost immediately the villagers began looking at them and whispering in their native tongue about them. Romulus stopped and looked around, his eyes falling on a young woman with shoulder-blade length, blond hair. A single braid fell down the side of her face and, except for having dirt smudges on her face and clothes; he thought that she was an angel despite being someone of the Germanic tribe.
His lips slowly curled upwards into a mischievous smile before it quickly turned into less of one as he looked at his men again. "We'll be splitting up to look for the woman we need to find," he stated before he turned and walked off.
Amadeus stared at his general with eyes of disapproval before he had the men spread out to look. He, himself, headed towards Romulus to make sure he was going to do his job. He knew he couldn't keep his off of the man for one second. Amadeus knew that his general would try to find a beautiful woman out of all these people and try to have fun with her. He shook his head, sometimes not believing that he was of lower rank than him. Amadeus sighed a bit before he felt himself collide with something. He blinked and took a step back the minute he saw that it was his general's back.
"I apologize for that sir," he stated but Romulus didn't pay any mind to it. He was staring at something, rather hard at that. Amadeus raised a brow with confusion as he took a few steps to the side and, in the distance, saw a cloud of dust. It wasn't long before screams filled the air as the dust cloud entered the far edge of the village from where they were standing. "Is that… what I think it is…?"
"I believe so…" Romulus stated as he placed a hand on the hilt of his sword as the dust cloud started getting closer and closer to them. Of course, his grip tightened the minute he saw a woman running through the middle of town with it behind her.
"A Gilgameshka…" Amadeus softly murmured as he bit the inside of his lower lip. He knew that those things were dangerous and, at the same time, still creatures of mystery. A Gilgameshka was a creature with the body and horns of a bull, but had a snout of a wolf. It ran a bit slower than a wolf but faster than most bulls. No one knew anything about these creatures and no one was willing to try anymore. The last time someone had attempted to do that, it ended with the stake of their life.
"Why would it be here…?" Romulus asked, mainly to himself as his arm slowly began pulling the sword from its sheath. However, the minute the woman tripped and a blanket bundle, which was quickly known to be a baby when it started crying, Romulus pulled out his sword and ran towards the woman who quickly curled her body around the child to protect it.
I won't ma- Romulus began to think before his movements and thoughts were screeched to a halt as he only saw the blur of someone running pass him. He blinked and, in the single moment, he saw a woman standing there with her hands locked around the Gilgameshka's horns, stopping it in its tracks with her feet only inches from the other woman behind her.
Romulus was motionless and speechless as he saw this, as well as the other men who weren't too far away as well. An eerie silence fell between them as they watched this strange woman holding the creature at bay and not even moving. The hooves of the beast kept kicking up dust but it didn't even move.
Bright blue eyes met with deep red. Woman and beast locking in a fierce gaze. She took a step forward, pushing the Gilgameshka backwards; doing so with each step that she took. The short sleeves of her outfit revealed the muscles slightly bulging from her arms and legs as she continued to push the creature back until it was far enough away from the woman to keep her from harm. She then moved the beast's head one way before quickly jerking the other way, causing the Gilgameshka to topple onto its side and a small grunt coming from it as well. The woman panted as she took a step away from it, but never breaking her gaze with it.
A snort came from it before it slowly stood back up on all fours, making it noticeable without the dust that its hind legs were wolf-like as well. The Gilgameshka gave a shake of its head before looking up at the woman who's eyes only narrowed more, not even seeming intimidated by it. It charged again, but she only grabbed its horns again and kept her body at a safe distance as its teeth tried to bit her, saliva dripping from between its teeth and onto the ground. She stood there, staring at it for a while.
"Look at that… her strength is…" one of the soldiers began.
"…that of a man…" another finished.
"And the way she moved…" another chimed in, still in awe at the sight he was seeing.
"…was like she had the swiftness of a wolf," another finished. They stood there and just watched as the Gilgameshka tried to move forward and make itself a meal from the woman, but she didn't even budge. It only took a moment before she slammed the creature's head into the ground and, pushing off from the horns, flipped over it and landed on the ground behind it.
A snort came from it again as the Gilgameshka slowly got up and turned towards her, seeming as though it were glaring at her. The woman stood there, a small wind kicking up and fluttering her blond hair towards one side for only a brief moment before it calmed down again. The Gilgameshka's right foot scrapped across the dirt a few times before it charged, looking as though it were heading for the woman; however, the minute it was close, it veered to the side and swiftly made its way out of the village. The woman pivoted a bit and watched as it left before she went to check on the woman who was shaking and still holding her crying infant.
Romulus stood there, a little flabbergasted but, at the same time, impressed that a woman was able to keep a creature like that at bay without letting it move. Amadeus looked around at the villagers, all of them seeming relieved that it was safe to come back out again. None of them really seemed to take much notice to the Roman soldiers in the middle of the street anymore.
Amadeus shook his head a bit and composed himself before looking to his left at his general who hadn't even moved since the entire event had took place. "General Vargas, it seems it is good fortune for us to be able to find who we're looking for so quickly…"
Romulus nodded as he finally sheathed his sword once more. "It is." He stated but didn't even look at his second-in-command as he just watched the woman start heading back over towards them, though not paying them much mind. As she got closer, Romulus could see how pale she was compared to most and could see a bit of sweat running down her ivory face. He also noticed the calluses on her fingers and the dirt that was smeared on her face and hands a bit as well and even noticed the single braid going down the side of her head that reached down to just above her shoulder.
As she walked pass him, Romulus immediately grabbed her wrist and pulled her to a stop, turning towards her as she turned towards him at almost the exact same time. "Excuse me, miss. Do you have time to talk?" he asked, but the woman was silent.
"Sir, she's a Germanian, she probably doesn't understand us," Amadeus stated as he looked at him before looking back at the woman. Romulus sighed.
"You're right… but how are we going to communicate with her i-"
"How long do you plan on holding on to my wrist?" she asked rather monotonously as she stared at him with a stoic expression. Hearing her speak nearly perfect Latin – there being a heavy accent and making it a bit hard to understand what she was saying a bit – took Amadeus and Romulus aback. Neither of them were expecting to hear her speak in their language.
"You can speak Latin?" Romulus asked to which she nodded in reply. Romulus stared at her before releasing her wrist. She then went over to a basket on the ground and began picking up the vegetables that had fallen out of them. "Can you tell me your name, miss?"
"…Adelia…" she replied, not even looking over at him as she said so. The Roman general smiled at this, thinking that it was such a heavenly name for an angel such as her. Sure, the rumors about the Germanic people characterized them as buff and unattractive, but Adelia was far from that to Romulus. She was slender and, despite having a bit of noticeable muscle definition, she wasn't at all like the rumors had said.
"Adelia, what a most blissful and beautiful name~" Romulus chimed after a moment as she stood back up and looked over at him.
"What do you want?" she asked, being very blunt about it since she could care less about why they were even here. She had more important things to do than to listen to this Roman babble non-sense. Romulus quickly composed himself as he stood up a bit straighter.
"We have been asked by our emperor to find you and bring you back to him. He is very interested in you."
She was silent for a long time before she walked pass him again in the other direction. "I have no interest in leaving this village…" The Roman general quickly grabbed her wrist again, making her glare at him for annoying her and just moving on.
"I'm sorry, but he really does insist that you come to meet him."
"I'm not going to leave this village, that's the end of it!" Her patience was wearing thin as she didn't have the time to go with them and leave the people here to defend for themselves. "I can't leave here and let my people die because of those creatures out there!"
Romulus frowned, his patience beginning to waver as well. "You have time to come back with us and let the men here defend the place." This is where Adelia roughly pulled her wrist back and glared at him.
"Do you see any men here!?" she exclaimed, finally reaching her boiling point. Romulus, surprised at her rage, began looking around the village at the people there. He could see women, some with children and some who were elderly, and two or three elderly men who were definitely in no shape to fight. His eyes kept scanning around but nowhere did he see any younger men who would be able to defend the village.
Now it explained so much on why Adelia was the way she was. There was no one else here who could help protect this place. Adelia had to make herself swift in order to make it in time to protect the people who couldn't protect themselves and she had to build up her strength in order to fend off the creatures. Of course, it didn't explain why she just didn't use a weapon to kill them off if they were such a nuisance. Romulua looked at Amadeus who seemed to be as skeptical as he was before he looked back at the spot where Adelia had been standing. However, to his surprise, she was no longer there. Romulus looked around for her but she was nowhere to be seen anymore.
He chuckled a bit as he shook his head. She's a sly one, Romulus thought as he let out a small sigh.
"She really does know how to get away," Amadeus stated as he looked up at his general again. "What are we going to do, sir?"
Romulus looked back at him with his hands on his hips and a small smile. "Not much we can do right now. Tell the men to make camp just outside the village so we don't make more of a scene then we already have. We'll see if we can't find her in the morning and convince her to come with us then."
Amadeus bowed slightly to him. "Right away, sir." He then turned and went to gather the men to report the information. As he did that, Romulus looked back out at the village. He could see why she didn't want to leave, but he couldn't exactly leave without her either. It would be a tough process, but he would have to think of something to get her to come with him. He sighed once more before he went to go join his men. Tomorrow would just be another obstacle he could have to overcome.
