Gaara looked up at the tree in the greenhouse. The land they lived in was barren and dry, there was no place for such beauty to grow, except the large two story area that was built into the clay school they used for agriculture studies. He heard the door open and sat up in the green grass just as Sakura and Kankuro came into few, both smiling. He felt the pain in his head beat against his skull.
"Gaara," Kankuro called, watching Gaara's eyes change slightly, "you know you're not supposed to be in the study area, those grass nin will freak if they catch you again." Gaara's eyes changed back suddenly and he looked at Sakura, standing up and strolling off the grass. "I texted Tem and told her to meet us for lunch today to meet Sakura. She said shell bring something good for us from home. Good thing too, no one should have to eat crappy school food on their first day in this place."
Sakura gave Gaara a small smile he nodded to her politely, "Are you ready to go?" he asked her.
"Yep, bye Kankuro, I'll see you at lunch!" she told him happily, he gave her a pat on the back and left with a smile. "When is lunch anyways, Gaara, I'm starving."
He began walking, motioning for her to follow, "At the end of next period." She let out a sigh, "Did you not eat breakfast?"
She shrugged, "I ate some of an apple. At my old school lunch was at the in fourth period. I guess I wasn't thinking about the fact that lunch would be later in the day here." She looked down embarrassed.
He stopped suddenly, opening his back pack and pulling out two boxes. "Here, you can have this." He said, handing her a box and opening one himself. "It has chocolate in it. I try something to eat in my bag in case I get hungry."
Sakura took the box and smiled, "Wow, thanks, Sabaku-san" She opened the box and popped a piece in her mouth, "This taste amazing!"
"You really should eat a bigger breakfast," he told her, his face blank as they started to walk again.
"Yeah, I guess. I don't normally eat breakfast though." She said casually, savoring the taste of the chocolate.
"Food is expensive for a family with no income, I suppose." He said nonchalantly, closing his box.
Sakura froze, "What?"
Gaara looked at her quizzically, "Well your mom hasn't found a job yet, has she, I mean you only arrived a couple days ago."
"How do you know that?" she questioned, she could feel her stomach turning.
He shrugged, "I'm at the Kazekage's tower sometimes. A woman with the same last name as you came in a few days ago to register with the city. She said she was going to find a job in town."
Sakura swallowed back her anxiety, "Yeah, I think she had an interview this morning." She lied, closing her box as they entered class. The teacher wore a confused and worried look as the teens walked in together. Gaara walked to the back row and opened his notebook to take notes. Sakura followed and sat a few seats down from him, trying to figure out how to get her lies straight between the Sabaku brothers.
