[Chapter 4]
The next morning Logan woke up first, he hadn't had a good nights' sleep in… well he couldn't really remember the last time he slept through the night without having flashes and night terrors of what had been done to him. He looked to the women sleeping next to him and inhaled, there was something about Ororo's scent that made him want to stay lying next to her all day.
He glanced at the alarm clock, 7:34 am, he fell back on his pillow but turned his head to face Ororo and thought about her admission of not trusting herself from the night before. As long as he had known her she was always stagnant when it came to showing her emotions except for when it came to the kids then she was all mother hen. Logan let out a soft chuckle as he again remembered his last conversation with Jubilee. He didn't know why but it was bothering him so much that he really didn't know much of anything about her besides the little things he picked up on over the years but those weren't much of anything. Jean was an open book anything he wanted to know about her he could find out easily but not with Ororo, she was a mystery, a puzzle and every part of him wanted to solve it. He held his breath as Ororo shifted in her sleep.
She turned to lay on her side facing him with her face on his pillow then fell back into a deep sleep. Logan laid there taking in her features and had to hold his hand back when he went to brush a strand of hair behind her ear; furrowing his brows he dropped his hand back to the bed. 'With my luck she'd wake up and strike my ass with a bolt for even thinkin' of touchin' her… again' He looked to the ceiling and let out a breath and tried for what felt like millionth time since he woke up to try and remember what happened that they ended up hitched, closing his eyes he mentally shook the thoughts from his mind then looked back towards Ororo only to look straight into a pair of brilliant blue eyes.
"Ya been up long?" he asked as he watched her roll to her back and stretch out her limbs as she woke herself up.
Ororo sat up and ran a hand through her locks "Long enough to know that you have something heavy on your mind"
"When don't I?"
She took his admission to thought for a moment "Do you wish to talk about it?"
Logan sat up and swung his legs over the side of the bed "Right talk… 'cause ya did so much of that last night when I wanted to"
He didn't know why he was upset with her for not explaining to him the night before but he was upset, very upset and he was doing nothing to hide that fact from her now. Logan stood with his back to her as he rummaged through his suitcase. Ororo watched from her spot on the bed, she could see his movements where stiff and didn't know why but the fact that Logan was upset with her was displeasing. She looked to where Brennan was still sleeping on the couch and then back to Logan before she spoke.
"Logan…"
"Drop it 'Ro. It ain't a big deal ta me if ya wanna share yer feelin's or not" he was lying and she knew it.
She called his name again but he closed himself off in the bathroom, when she heard the shower running she fell back against her pillow and rubbed her eyes then she frowned at the thought of Logan pouting like a child. Swiftly she made her way to the bathroom and tried to open the door, it was locked. She let out a Logan-like growl of frustration and went to sit on the bed with a thump.
Ororo sat there thinking about how Logan reacted and if she were to be honest with herself she had to admit that she couldn't really expect him to open up to her if she was not willing to do the same. She began to worry her lip between her teeth; could she really see herself opening up to Logan of all people? The sound of a rustling blanket brought her from her thoughts and she look towards the couch to see Brennan just sitting up.
Brennan stretched her arms above her head and yawned then looked around the room and a flicker of panic shown on her face before she remembered where she was.
"Good morning child"
Brennan scrunched her nose at being called a child and would have said something about it if she hadn't felt the emotions coming from the older women in the room. Even though she was smiling she could feel hurt and frustration rolling off her so Brennan gave a small smile and said good morning instead. It didn't take a genius to figure out it had something to do with the grouchy man, at the thought of Logan her eyes flickered to the balcony. Ororo must have noticed because she let Brennan know that he was in the shower.
Ororo came to sit next to Brennan on the couch once they had folded her blankets; after a moment of sitting in silence they heard the shower turn off. Brennan looked at Ororo then to the bathroom door then down to her hands.
"So, is there anything you would like to do today?"
At the question Brennan looked back to Ororo and shrugged.
"Child, is there nothing you can think of? Have you ever been to Las Vegas before? Our flight is not until early tomorrow morning so we have the day to ourselves"
"What about Logan?" she asked still looking at Ororo and she seen the small wince flash across her face before she school her features but before she could answer she was interrupted.
"What about me?"
Both females turned to where Logan was standing with his hair still wet form the shower wearing a shirt and jeans with his feet bare. Ororo felt her pulse quicken at the sight and she mentally kicked herself for it. She looked to Brennan "Why don't you go change and give my earlier question some thought"
After Brennan left the room Ororo went to get her clothes ready for her turn in the bathroom. Logan sat on the bed and put his socks on and was trying hard to ignore the movements of the women behind him; that is, until he felt the bed dip beside him and her scent enveloped him.
"I'm sorry"
If it wasn't for his advanced hearing he would have never heard the soft words leave her lips. He turned his head to look in her direction; she was looking down at her hands that were clasped together on her lap.
"Ya ain't got nothin' ta be sorry about Darlin'"
At that she looked up at him and gave him a crooked smile "Oh but I do. It was unfair of me to assume you would talk to me when I was so unwilling to do so last night"
Logan gave a slight nod "I didn't have to snap at ya the way I did neither" he returned the crooked smile and ran a hand through his wet hair "So what were you and kid talkin' about?"
"Our plans for the day."
"And what did you two decide we would be doing?"
"We?" Ororo turned her head to face him again
Logan shrugged "Figured we'd be babysittin' today. What about Circus Circus?"
She didn't hold back the smile that made its way to her lips "I believe she would enjoy that Logan"
And just like that their earlier farce was forgotten.
Later that afternoon after they had hit up yet another buffet Logan pulled into the parking garage of Circus Circus and parked the car. Before he unlocked the doors to let them out he looked to Ororo "I think we need ta lay down some ground rules"
"The floor is yours Logan" Ororo said, giving him the green light to lay down some rules.
They both turned in their seats to face the little girl in the back seat before Logan began talking.
"Alright kid here are some rules ta follow while we are in there, Vegas can be fun but they are too many people fer me to keep track of…"
"Im not a baby" Brennan said as she crossed her arm in front of her and slouched in her seat
"Never said ya were, kid…"
"Then why are you gonna give be some dumb baby rules? I'm not a baby!" she spat out with a frown on her face
Logan frowned at Brennan, he didn't like the 'tude she was throwing at him "Yer sure as hell actin' like one… kid." As if Ororo could sense a blow out to happen she stepped in.
"Brennan, there will always be rules to follow whether you are 10, 30 even 50. Do you cross the street without checking first?"
Logan sat there quietly to see where 'Ro was heading with this.
"No."
"Why not?"
"'Cause I'm not dumb, I don't wanna get hit by a car"
"And is that something you always knew not to do?"
Brennan looked up at Ororo like she was dense "No, my mom and dad taught me. It was one of their rul…" Brennan stopped what she was saying and her eyes flickered to Logan then back to Ororo "okay, I get it."
When Logan went to speak Ororo held up a finger to him and continued speaking "Then I believe you owe Logan an apology for the attitude"
Brennan whipped her head up and her eyes were wide "What? No way!"
Ororo frowned then turned back to face the front and began putting on her seatbelt "Then we will go back to the hotel. Logan wanted to bring you out today and if this is how you are going to act then I want no part in it" she looked to Logan "Let's head back"
Logan shifted in his chair and started the engine.
"You can't be serious!"
Logan let out a chuckle "Kid, 'Ro here is the most serious person ya'll ever meet"
When the car was put in reverse Brennan all but shouted her apologies. Logan hid a smirk and pulled the car back into its spot.
"Logan, I believe you were saying…"
Logan did smirk then as he looked at Ororo's lifted brow and turned back to Brennan "Okay Brennan 3 simple rules. One: stay where we can see you at all times. Don't leave our side without permission," he held up a finger for each rule "two: Strangers. Don't talk to 'em and three: listen to rules one and two. Follow those rules and yer gonna be fine kid"
Brennan nodded and happily climbed out of the car when Logan finally unlocked the doors. She stood by the car and waited for the two adults the last thing she wanted was to have them upset with her again. As they made their way to the Casino entrance she stood closest to Ororo even though she was the one that reprimanded her in the car, the woman done it by making her unknowingly acknowledge say she was wrong about rules; it reminded her of something her mom would have done. Brennan smiled softly at the memory of her mom and her heart clenched at the thought of never hearing her voice again.
Brennan was watching her feet as they walked until she heard Logan speak to her.
"Hey kid check it out"
When she looked up she seen an enormous pink dome and raised her eyebrows then look at Logan who let out a laugh at her facial expression.
"It's better inside"
Ororo threw him a look with a raised eyebow and he quickly added "At least that's what I heard"
She smiled and let out a laugh at the way he back peddled his last statement. Brennan had a small smile at what she could feel coming from the two adults.
"You should do that more Darlin'"
After she slowed her laughter she asked, still smiling "Do what?"
"That" he jutted his chin towards her "Smile, laugh. It looks good on ya"
Immediately Brennan could feel a swirl of sensations coming from them; nervousness, embarrassment, happiness and a few things she couldn't quite put her finger on yet. Ororo and Logan stood there staring at each other until an impatient Brennan spoke
"Are you guys gonna kiss now or can we go?"
Logan cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck with one hand while Ororo smoothed out the blouse she was wearing. Brennan for sure knew what they were feeling now.
Once they made their way through the doors Brennan stood in awe. The huge pink dome housed a mini theme park; there were rollers coasters and rides, she could hear the happy screams and the rumbles coming from them.
Brennan was practically dancing on her toes with excitement since she had never been on a roller coaster before "Can we ride that one?!" she asked a she pointed to the ride in question
"That's why we're here kid"
The little girl didn't hold back her squeal of excitement and turned back to see what else there was to ride. Ororo leaned close to Logan "This was an excellent idea Logan. She looks very happy."
Logan held back the chill that went through him when he felt her breath on the shell of his ear. He looked at Ororo and gave her a half grin "Kid seemed like she needed it"
"And that one too!" Brennan grabbed hold of each of their hands and practically started dragging them through the crowd to their first ride. At the touch of the little girls hand Logan felt so much excitement and pure happiness that he couldn't hold back the smile and he knew it was Brennan projecting her feeling through touch 'that's some power this kid has' he thought as he looked over to Ororo and immediately knew she was feeling the same thing because she was wearing the biggest smile he had ever seen.
A few hours later they had somehow found themselves in line for the biggest coaster in the place called the "Canyon Blaster" it had loops and corkscrews. Brennan had practically begged them to ride it all day. Ororo had somehow talked her way out of riding it saying that someone would have to sit alone and she would take one for the team and sit this one out. Logan thought back to the smirk 'Ro was wearing when she had given them her excuse he somehow felt he was tricked into being the one to take Brennan.
After the coaster Brennan ran to Ororo who was sitting on a bench waiting for them. When Logan caught up to them he let them know it was almost time to wrap things up and they decided they would play some games before they left but not before making a restroom break.
Ororo and Logan stood by the women's door waiting for Brennan to finish. Logan looked down and noticed Ororo twisting the ring on her finger "Still stuck?"
As if to prove a point she tried to pull it off her finger and gave through him a 'what do you think' look.
"Stop," he put a and over hers to stop her actions "Yer gonna dislocate it"
"Well it's not like I can return home wearing it Logan. There will be too many questions that I do not feel like answering."
"Don't feel like explainin' how ya ended up hitched to a Neanderthal?"
When she looked up she seen a smile on his face that didn't quite reach his eyes "Logan, you know it's not…"
"I'm just messin' with ya 'Ro" he still had his hand over hers "Here," he pulled her hand towards his face and towards his mouth
Ororo's eyes widened and she halted her hand "What are you doing?"
"I've seen this in a movie once. The broad tried on a wedding ring and it got stuck so the friend got it off for her this way. Trust me?"
When she didn't answer right away he added "I can always cut it off"
She gave him a nervous smile "Alright, try your way… The first way"
Logan grinned and brought her hand to his face and put her ring finger into his mouth. Ororo's cheeks got hot as they were colored red from blushing. She brought other hand to her face as if trying to hide embarrassment. She could feel Logan's tongue swirl around her finger before he slowly, very slowly, pulled his head back and smiled at her with the ring between his teeth.
Ororo looked down at her now ringless finger "You did it!"
When Logan went to speak the ring slipped from his mouth and hit the ground with a 'clink'
"Dammit" he got to the ground to look for the fallen ring, when he found it he held it up for Ororo to see from his place on the ground in front of her.
"Oh goodness he's proposing!" came a voice from the crowd around them. After that everyone stopped to see what Ororo's answer would be.
Ororo looked from the crowd that had formed around them then back at Logan who did look as if he were proposing and she couldn't stop the flutter in her stomach at the sight. Logan looked from Ororo to the crowd then down at himself and could have kicked himself. There was a pang in his heart from not knowing if he had actually ever done this for someone he loved and here he was doing it for his already 'wife'… again. Not that he could rememeber how he popped the question the first time around.
Brennan came out of the bathroom and pushed her way passed people to find her 'chaperones' , when she finally made her was through the small crowd she found Logan on one knee holding out a ring to Ororo who was standing in front of him. She witnessed Ororo grabbing Logan by the wrist to pull him up to stand and Logan waving his hands to shoo the crowd away, explaining that it wasn't what it looked like. The crowd dispersed with the sounds of disappointment.
Logan slipped the ring into his pocket and scanned for Brennan, who was walking up to them pretending she had no clue what had just happened.
"Ready for some games, Kid?"
Brennan nodded her head and took Ororo's hand as they made their way to the games. Ororo looked down at Brennan when she felt the little girl grab her hand and smiled at how she was opening up with her. Logan stopped by a booth to buy tickets so that they were able to play some games.
They tried their hand at playing a water shoot game where you had to shoot a water gun into a clown's mouth and until your water balloon popped. Logan had won and gave the stuffed prize pig to Brennan.
Logan went to stand in line to buy some kettle corn leaving Brennan and Ororo to play some shooting game where you had to shoot the red star on the target completely gone to win the mega prizes. Brennan had seen the cherry beach cruiser and begged to try and play. He wanted to tell the kid it was probably rigged but didn't have the heart to so he gave Ororo the tickets and went to get a snack.
While walking back he noticed a man gangly looking man with slicked back hair and a cheap looking outfit talking to Ororo who looked put off by the interaction.
"I could show you the trick to this game gorgeous" the man said to her as he slowly raked his eyes over her body
Ororo made a quick face of disgust and as politely as she could turned the man down. The man laughed and leaned against the game counter "Awe, come on Sugar I'm sure your rugrat here really wants that bike. I could show you a thing or two" at his last words he waggled his brows.
"I said no" at this point Ororo was over trying to be nice. She put a hand on Brennan's shoulder to steer her away from the man but the man stopped her by grabbing her wrist "Come on Toots just let me show ya"
That's when Logan saw red. He walked up to them so fast that he didn't see or anything until he felt Ororo hand on his shoulder. Logan looked at the 'Ro's face, her lips were moving but no sound was coming out. He inhaled her scent and closed her eyes and when he opened them again the world was turning again.
"Logan release him!"
'Release him?' what was she talking about? Logan turned his head and seen he had the weasley little man pushed up against the pillar by the neck whose face was turning red from his oxygen being cut off 'What tha hell?'
Right away Logan let go of the man who fell to the ground sputtering and coughing.
"I swear man…" cough "I didn't know she was taken" then man stood and held his hand up in surrender
Brennan had herself pressed to Ororo's side; she didn't like the burst of rage she had felt from Logan, it scared her and made her head hurt.
Ororo was glaring at the side of Logans head. Logan was trying to figure out what the hell just happened. The greasy haired man took that as his cue to jet so he slowly back away into the crowd. As soon as the man was gone Ororo found her voice "Where do you get off Logan? I'm no damsel in distress who needs to be rescued and I sure hell do NOT belong to you!"
"Belong ta me? What tha hell? You gotta screw loose? Quite makin' a scene"
Thunder could be heard rumbling outside "You, Logan, are the one who made a scene when you went all caveman a moment ago. Telling that man to keep his filthy paws off your women or you would remove them for him. How dare you!"
Brennan's head felt like it was going to explode with all the emotions swirling around her; she had to get away from them.
Logan and Ororo continued to argue until security came and asked them to leave the premises due the fact that they were disturbing the peace. Embarrassed they were being kicked out Ororo looked down to where Brennan was standing only to find a vacant space beside her. She did a quick scan around and found no trace of the little girl.
"Logan…"
Logan who was in the middle of pleading their case for the scene with security looked at Ororo with a look of exasperation "What?"
"She's gone. Brennan's gone Logan"
He seen the panic in her eyes as she spoke and he gave the air a sniff to see if he could pick up the scent of the little girl. It was faint but he found it, he nodded his head in the direction the scent was leading him and began to walk and Ororo followed him.
As they walked through the crowd Logan continued to sniff for Brennan's scent and every once and a while he would cast a glance in Ororo direction. She was worrying her lip between her teeth as she scanned the crowd and he could tell she was worried; a frown also marred her delicate features and he knew he was the one who caused that but he couldn't for life of him remember what happened. It was all a blur almost as if he blacked out.
"'Ro…"
Ororo held up a hand to silence him "Now is not the time. We need to find Brennan." And those were the last words either of them spoke while searching out the missing little girl.
Finally the scent lead them to the parking lot where they had parked the car, as they approached the rented SVU they found Brennan sitting on the ground near the front tire on the driver's side. He heard Ororo let out a breath of relief. Logans relief was quickly replaced with irritation.
"You have a hell of a lot of explaining ta do kid"
At the sound of Logan's voice Brennan whipped her head up and seen the man standing with his arms crossed and Ororo quickly came to her and began checking to see if she was okay. At the worry she felt rolling of Ororo Brennan began to feel bad knowing she was the cause but that was quickly replaced with embarrassment as she felt the disappointment and irritation coming from Logan.
Ororo ran a hand lovingly through the little girls hair "You were told to stay by our side Brennan. We became very worried about you"
Brennan's eyes glossed over with unshed tears and she shrugged and scuffed her toe against the pavement.
"Kid, ya had two simple rules ta follow. What tha hell were ya thinking takin' off like that?"
She looked up at Ororo, she didn't look mad but her feelings were saying another matter. Brennan looked down and shrugged again.
"Brennan shrugging is not an acceptable answer. Verbal please" Ororo chided in a soft tone as she took hold of the little girls hand to show her comfort.
"I got a headache" when neither adult spoke she continued "All I could feel was everyone's feelings and it really started hurting my head so I came outside to get away from everyone"
"That still doesn't…"
"But I came to the car! So you coulda found me easier!" Brennan cut Logan off to plead her case on how she was only thinking of them when she came outside
"It could have been easier find you if you had not left at all, little one. All you had to do was let one of us know of your discomfort and we would have left with you"
Even though her tone was soft and gentle Brennan heard the reprimand in Ororo's voice. Thinking back on it Brennan could have told Ororo about her headache instead of taking off on her own. "I'm sorry"
"Apology accepted. Come on let's head back now it has been a long day" Ororo held her hand out to Brennan to help her stand. Logan watch in disbelief as Ororo held the door open for Brennan to climb in. Once the door was closed Logan has his say.
"Ya gotta be kiddin' me Ororo"
"Excuse me?" she didn't like the way he used her full name
"The kid breaks a rule almost giving you a damn heart attack but she says sorry and it's all forgotten?!"
"Logan… she…"
"If that had been any of the kids back home ya woulda…"
Ororo put her hands to her hips and frowned at Logan "Any other time Logan I might have followed through with some type of punishment but seeing as WE are the main reason for her headache I have chosen to let it slide this time"
Logan pulled out a cigar, lit it and began smoking it and smirked when Ororo rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"I feel that if we were able to reach her today Logan, I also feel that by reprimanding her now it will make her revert back into her shell. Once we are home she will have to follow the same rules as all the other children or face the consequences just as they do"
The man let out a burly grunt and bit the end of his stogy between his teeth then leaned against the back of the car "Whatever ya say Darlin'"
Another couple had entered the lift in the lobby with them and Logan could feel the older woman staring at him and it was beginning to bother him.
Finally their floor came up and the doors opened, he stood to the side and let Ororo exit first before h
Ororo and Logan, who was carrying a sleeping Brennan, stood in the elevator waiting for their floor.
e followed her out the old woman that had been staring said "You have a beautiful family there"
Logan nodded his thanks and walked into the hall. He made his way to their room but he couldn't get the thought out of his head about the women thinking they were a family. When he got to the room the blankets had been pulled back on the bed so he gently laid Brennan on the bed and covered her.
When he was done he looked up and seen Ororo watching him with a look he couldn't place.
"We need ta talk"
"Yes, we do"
She followed Logan to the balcony so that they could speak without small ears overhearing them. Logan was leaning on the railing and debated lighting a cigar but decided against seeing that 'Ro was already pretty upset with him at the moment.
"Look, before ya say anything ya ta know that I don't know what happened between buying popcorn and choking that bastard out"
"Nothing?" at the shake of his head she began to tell him about he came out of nowhere with a look of fury, saying that she belong to him.
"I am not a piece of land that you can stake claim on Logan"
"Ya don't think I know that?! Like I said before I don't know what happened"
When all Ororo did was stare at him he became upset all over again "I don't really care if ya believe or not. Im just tellin' ya how it is"
Ororo stood up and walked over to him "I believe you," she put a hand on his fore arm "I will admit the man was making me highly uncomfortable and even though I wish it would have happened differently I am glad you showed up when you did" she gave him a warm smile.
"I didn't like the way he was undressin' ya with his eyes, tha creep"
She shook her and rolled her eyes "Logan, really…"
"What? He was! Ya deserve more respect than that Darlin'"
They stood in comfortable silence looking out at the brightly lit city below them. Logan took in Ororo's presence out of the corner of his and watched as the glow of the lights made her hair illuminate like a halo framing her face. He cast his glance down to her now bare finger then subconsciously patted the pocket he had put the diamond ring in.
"I came to the Institute when I was almost 6 years old" she didn't look at him as she spoke "Charles found me in Cairo when he picked up my mutation while using Cerebo"
"Damn, Darlin'… 6? Ya had yer powers that young?"
Logan let the fact that she was even speaking about her past sink in then he remembered that early signs of mutation before puberty was due to a traumatic event just like Brennan. He couldn't imagine being 10 let alone 6 and having to go through those types of changes.
"So ya been with Chuck this whole time?"
Ororo gave him a small smile "He is the only father figure I can really remember. Charles believes it's because I am subconsciously blocking my memories from before my time at the mansion"
"He can't just… ya know… take down the mental walls?"
After letting out a sarcastic laugh Ororo let him know about the one time Charles had tried to enter her mind to break down her psychological masses only to have to pull out due to the fact that there was a raging storm outside and a grade 4 tornado in the backyard. Of course that was when she was 7 and still coming to him in the middle of the night due to nightmares but she decided against letting Logan know that little bit.
"ha ha tornado? Bet New York had to change their pants after witnessing that"
"Yes, well Charles did have to spend a pretty penny fixing the estate after that event" She gave Logan a sly grin.
"So you and Chuck go way back then, huh?"
"Yes, the same with Scott he was 8 when I came to stay at the mansion and has been like an older brother to me ever since."
"Be right back Darlin'"
Ororo watched Logan enter the hotel room then turned back to the scene below. She didn't know why she had shared what she had with him but she supposed it was to make him feel at ease about today's earlier happenings. She looked up when she heard the door sliding open and seen Logan holding a bottle of apple cider and to champagne glasses when they met eyes he waggled his brows at her.
"Figured we're safe with cider" he gave her a crooked grin as he poured the chilled liquid into a glass
She didn't hold back the laugh that came bubbling from her throat and took the glass Logan held out to her "Like you said there is not much more then tattoos left for us to do now Logan"
After they had finished their first glass and were working on their second Logan spoke "So ya know someone who can help with this situation we are in?"
Ororo finished her sip before she spoke "Yes, Charles knows quite a few people in the legal department that will be able to work with us… discretely."
"'fraid what people with think when they find out ya married me?" the tone in his voice was light
"Right, like you are willing to let everyone know that the wolverine is now tied down" she rolled her eyes playfully
"Doesn't sound so bad. Coulda been worse"
"How so?"
"Coulda been One eye in yer place"
They met eyes for a brief moment before bursting out laughing till their sides ached. Ororo had her arms wrapped around her middle and was leaning forward trying to catch her breath. Logan's head was thrown back in laughter and as much as he tried to stop laughing but he just couldn't because Ororo's laughter was infectious.
Finally the laughter died down and Ororo wiped the tears from her eyes, breathing in deep then she pulled out her phone and motioned Logan to come closer; when he was close enough she held the phone out and readied herself to take a picture. Seeing what Ororo was up to he leaned in closer, still smiling and the flash went off. She pulled the picture up to see it then showed Logan.
"Well look at that, you can't even tell ya can't stand me" the smirk he was wearing let her know he was kidding.
Just then her phone rang; it was the legal aide she had contacted earlier. After a short call she looked to Logan who was already waiting for her to finish her phone call.
"That was a lawyer friend of the professors name Miranda Chase; she is willing to file the annulment for us. We meet with her tomorrow afternoon actually… at 2:30 for coffee"
"Coffee? Why not at Harry's so we could all grab a cold one?"
Ororo didn't bother answering instead she just raised an eyebrow then checked the time, deciding they should wake Brennan up or she wouldn't sleep tonight, she got up and tied her hair up then headed into the room with Logan right behind her.
It was almost 2 in the morning when Logan felt as if he was being watch so he darted up in bed and unsheathed his claws. SNIKT!
At the foot of the bed was a terrified looking Brennan. Logan returned his claws and shook Ororo awake. She turned over to face him "What is it Logan?"
"The kid"
Ororo sat up and found Brennan looking at her with glossy eyes and a pale face so she held out her arms and almost immediately the little girl rushed into them. Brennan was mumbling something into Ororo's shoulder but it was so muffled even Logan couldn't make it out.
Ororo pulled back enough so the she could Brennan's face "Say that again little one"
"I had a nightmare and… and I got up to wake you but then HE," she pointed at Logan "Sat up and had knives in his hands! I got scared and…" she mumbled the rest but this time Logan heard her.
"Kid wet herself 'Ro" he said it softly with no gruffness in his voice, Brennan thought he almost sounded sorry.
Getting out of bed Ororo ushered Brennan into the bathroom to take a quick shower, when she came back out Logan was standing at the couch where Brennan slept with his shoulders slumped.
"Logan?"
"Bed's dry"
Ororo didn't see the relevance to his statement until he continued "Which I means I scared her enough ta…"
Her lips formed a small 'O' as she put two and two together "It wasn't your fault Logan"
The bathroom door opened and Brennan walked out wearing a fresh pair of PJs and a bundle of clothed in her arms which Ororo took from her and headed back into the bathroom leaving Logan and Brennan alone.
"Look kid… I aint good at this… but I'm sorry I scared ya"
"Is that your special gift? Those knives?"
Logan sat on the foot of the bed and absently run his fingers between his knuckles "Ya could say that… but they ain't knives they are part of me…"
Brenna came closer to him "Does it hurt you when they come out?"
"Nothin' I can't handle" he gave her a smirk "Come one lets get ya ta bed"
When he headed for the couch Brennan halted his movement by placing a hand in his "Can I sleep with you guys? Pleaseee?"
"I don't think so kid"
"Plleeaasseeeee?" she popped out her bottom lip and widened her eyes
"Nice try runt. That ain't gonna work on me"
When Ororo returned after rinsing and hanging Brennan's bottoms to dry she found the bed occupied by Logan and Brennan. Logan was lying on his back and Brennan had her head on his arm already sleeping. Ororo smiled at the scene before her.
"Ya gonna stand there all night or ya coming to bed?"
"Are you sure there is room?" she climbed into bed and pulled the covers over them. They laid there listening to the soft breathing coming from the little girl between them.
"Ya know… this isn't exactly how I pictured havin' to girls in my bed"
Although she couldn't see his face she could hear the smile playing on his lips and couldn't help but smile as well.
