Chapter Four

I have a job for you

Dean stood frozen to the spot, staring into the far distance with unseeing eyes as he tried frantically to gather his scattered thoughts together. He had to be at the top of his game for this meeting, anything else might see him losing more than just his thoughts.

"If you've gone to that much trouble to get me here then you would probably catch me if I fell off the roof, or failing that you would probably send one of your Angels to do it for you. I'm assuming since you're the big guy on campus that you have lesser Angels willing and able to do your bidding." He stated, thankful that his voice came out steady and even, he had been concerned that it would reveal how shaken he was.

"Perhaps" Castiel answered, a considering tone to his voice as though he was musing over Dean's comment carefully, weighing the pros and cons to it. "But those lesser Angels as you call them would merely allow you to fall. What's one more insignificant human's death to them after all" he pointed out, the comment causing Dean's eyes to narrow as the hand at his side curled into a fist. He felt a solid block of heat on his back, a heat which indicated to him that Castiel had moved so he was standing directly behind him within touching distance. "You have a head for heights considering where you are standing. I know of no other human who has managed that. They tend to keep in the room as though a structure made of glass and metal could keep them safe from anything which wanted them."

Dean shrugged his shoulders at the comment.

"Well I'm not like most humans" he answered simply. There was a pause before Castiel spoke.

"No Dean, it appears that you are not."

Dean resisted shuddering with difficulty. The sense of power rolling off of Castiel's form was incredible. Dean could almost feel it pressing against his skin, trying to burrow beneath the surface to what lay beneath it. It made him long to scratch at his arms and put some much needed distance between himself and the Archangel but he didn't dare move a muscle. Showing Castiel that he was affecting him would be a mistake which Dean couldn't make. He couldn't give the Archangel anymore advantages then he already had.

"I don't think I've been this high up before" Dean admitted, changing the subject away from himself to a more general one where he could have more control over the direction of it.

"And what do you make of the view Dean? Do you like it?" Castiel asked him, his voice lowering causing Dean to bite down hard on the inside of his cheek, focusing on the pain to steady himself before he spoke.

"It's just a view" he replied, taking hold of his courage with both hands and turning in a fluid motion so he was facing the Archangel directly for the first time.

The first thing which struck Dean was Castiel's blue eyes. Dean had only seen a colour like that once before when he had happened to look down once at the ocean while the sun was shining directly on it. It was such a vivid blue that it had always stuck inside his mind. He didn't even know that the colour could be replicated for something as ordinary as a pair of eyes. He swallowed, his gaze moving against his will to take in the rest of Castiel. He was handsome man, slightly smaller than Dean in height with an athletic build and short wild dark hair that blew in the wind. If he had been a human then Dean would have assumed that he had simply rolled out of bed, forgetting to brush his hair before an important meeting. His fingers itched to reach out and touch the strands but he resisted the urge. Somehow he doubted that many humans touched an Angel's hair, especially when that Angel happened to be an Archangel.

"And yet you seem pleased with the view you see." Castiel said, breaking Dean away from his staring. Dean blinked, thankful that his sunglasses hid his expression before he looked away, suddenly sharply aware of the fact that there was nothing behind him which would break his fall. One false step and he would be dropping through air and he doubted anyone would catch him, not when he was merely a lowly human.

"I've seen better views" he stated in response.

Castiel raised an eyebrow at him, a look on interest in his eyes as he studied Dean as though he was an intriguing specimen which Castiel wanted to study in detail.

"Come and eat" Castiel said turning away from him "I had Emily bring a selection of food which human's tend to favour."

"I'm not hungry" Dean answered, following Castiel across the roof and back into the small room where the lift was housed.

"You say you are not hungry but I can feel your bodies urges Dean Winchester. I know you are hungry. Take a seat and take something" Castiel stated calmly. Dean watched as the Archangel lowered himself into one of the chairs, his eyes fixed on Dean as though he was waiting to see what his next move would be.

"I'm okay with standing thanks" he responded. Castiel raised a dark eyebrow at him, looking faintly amused by the response.

"Do you still believe that this a trap?" he asked pleasantly. "There is no need for you to believe that Dean Winchester. I told you before that I have gone to a great deal of effort to find you and to bring you to me. I am not about to kill you, not before I tell you why you've been summoned here. I haven't tried to take away the weapons you have on your person have I? That should be a show of my intent to you if nothing else does."

Dean's eyes narrowed.

"Yeah well your little invitation didn't say anything about not bringing weapons with me so you know, better safe than sorry" he said with a shrug of his shoulders. His eyes dropped to the food for a moment, flickering over the spread there, the sight of which made his mouth water.

"There seemed little point in telling you not to bring your weapons when I already knew that you would bring them with regardless."

"Good for you" Dean replied. "Personally I like being prepared for anything which might come my way. Call it crazy but I don't particularly want to die yet."

"Of course you don't" Castiel replied, glancing down at his fingernails as he spoke. "You wouldn't want to leave Sam unprotected would you. Who knows what could get him if you aren't there keeping them back from him. Is he aware of all you do for him Dean? Does your brother appreciate all the sacrifices you make for him? Is he even aware of them all or do you keep it from him in an attempt to keep him safe?"

"My brother has nothing to do with this" Dean said angrily, his gaze moving to the elevator door, wondering whether he could reach it in time before Castiel caught him. Somehow he doubted it.

"Just sit Dean, I have already told you that I have no intention of killing you" Castiel commanded, a note of impatience coming to his voice. Dean nervously licked his lips before he forced himself to move forward, taking the seat opposite Castiel, thankful for the table which kept them separate from each other.

For a moment they stared both sizing the other up, before Castiel spoke, his head tilted to the left.

"You aren't afraid of me are you?" he asked curiously.

Dean snorted in disbelief before he could stop himself, shaking his head at the comment.

"I'm not a fool Castiel" he replied sharply. "Anyone with a half of a brain cell would be terrified to be face to face with an Archangel. I've read the articles. I am well aware of what you Angels do to people, but since you've already told me twice about how much effort you've taken to find me I'm assuming you want to talk to me first before you hurt or kill me, otherwise why go through all the hassle. You could simply have sent a lesser Angel to find me and dispose of me if that was what you truly wanted to happen."

"That is correct" Castiel said, his mouth curving into a slight smile.

"I also know that an Angel's vessel was originally a human being, so how long exactly have you had that vessel for?" he asked before he could stop himself. "Is the man you took it from even alive in there anymore?"

There was a silence for a moment between them.

"Do you have no sense of self-preservation Dean?" Castiel asked, a tone coming to his voice which placed Dean on edge, he forced himself to shrug.

"I hunt Supernatural beings for a living Castiel, somehow I think that any sense of self-preservation which I might have been born with is long gone by now." Dean answered, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning back in his chair being careful not to take his gaze away from Castiel.

"A born Hunter" Castiel mused. "A son of Winchester, so rare and yet so surprisingly interesting as well. Tell me Dean, how many Supernatural creatures have you killed since you first started hunting? Twenty? Fifty? Over a hundred? Or is the number so high that you've forgotten the actual amount, you merely know a ball park figure" Dean stilled as Castiel gaze caught his through his sunglasses. "Or do you remember every face, every name and every kill. Do you ever think of them?"

"If you want to know how many Supernatural creatures I've killed then you merely need to look at my file with the agency. It will provide you with any information you could want in regards to my skill set" Dean remarked steadily.

There was a moment's silence again before the Archangel spoke.

"Tell me about your eyes Dean" he demanded, his voice sharp and commanding making it clear that whatever previous game he had been playing with Dean was now at an end.

"They are green" Dean answered flippantly. He could picture the look that both Sam and Bobby would be giving him if they could see him now but he pushed the image away. He had to keep his attention focused on the Archangel in front of him, one false move and Dean could end up leaving the building in a different way to the way he had entered.

"Are they" Castiel responded. "And tell me Dean, what exactly can your green eyes do?"

Dean bit down on his next flippant remark and made himself act normally.

"I can see the true faces of any supernatural being if I choose to" he stated, staring at Castiel "Whatever they are I will see it regardless of the vessel they take, the real being behind the mask will always reveal itself to me."

"Even Angels" Castiel said. "I know, I have been watching you for a long time Dean. I know all about you"

Dean swallowed, looking away from the being opposite him.

"What do you want from me?" he asked, his stomach churning when Castiel suddenly smiled at him.

"All I want is for you to do what you do best Dean. What you were born to do." Castiel replied causing Dean to frown.

"So you want me to hunt a Supernatural being for you?" Dean asked waiting until Castiel nodded. "If that was all you wanted then why exactly did you drag me here? You could have easily just given the information and details of the hunt to the agency. They would have passed it on to me."

"I needed to see you with my own eyes Dean" Castiel replied. "As for hunting a Supernatural being that is not what I want you for. Not exactly"

"If you don't want me to hunt down a Supernatural being then what exactly do you want me to hunt down? A human? Because I don't hunt down humans,"

"Not a human either Dean."

"An Angel?" Dean said in dread, his shoulders slumping down in relief when Castiel shook his head at him,

"Not an Angel" he said "I want you to hunt down an Archangel"

Dean froze, barely able to speak pass the suddenly blockage in his throat.

"An Archangel" he repeated. "What Archangel?"

Castiel smiled at him.

"Lucifer."
