Chapter 4:

"So, do you have a date to the charity event Winchester?" asked Harry as I made my way to my office carrying a stack of criminal records. I eyed the shaggy haired man.

"Are you offering- because I think your wife would cut a bitch," I teased. He rolled his eyes. Harry Sanders was rather infamous in the station for having a beautiful and rather possessively crazy wife that most likely belonged to Arkham Asylum.

"Cute, but I'm asking seriously here," he said rolling his eyes.

"I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that we are charity," I told him finding the content of one my of the cases in front of me more appealing.

"Well someone has to pay our salaries and Wayne Enterprises stockholders are the generous folks," he said spinning around in his chair.

"They are loaded. Their pocket money is my salary for a whole year," commented Laura filing her nails like a true 1980s cliché. I take a second to appreciate how she didn't half-ass it with just her perm.

"I'm asking cause I have this cousin-" he began. I twirled around heading toward my office before he could finish.

"I think I rock single well," I shouted out walking away as I heard Laura jump at the arrange date proposition.

I laid back on the couch in my office. It was green scruffy and clashed with everything in the room but was blissful to crash on. I thought back to the last disaster of a relationship with a certain angel and cringed at it. I really fell in love with Gabriel but he just played around with me. I hated him but he didn't deserve the way he died. Whether it was protecting me and my brothers or for just the sake of Kali- I don't think I'd ever know. In the end I was indebted to him because it was rare that someone saved the us for once.

Flashback

"So this whole time, you were the trickster Sam were talking about... or should I say angel now," I said. I wasn't going to cry. I use to lie to myself that it's because that's not what Winchester's do but in the end it was my pride. I wasn't going to breakdown. Not in front of him.

"All this time- we- I," I paused gulping down the sob and trying to control my expression while Dean looked at Gabriel murderously. I had told Dean I was seeing someone and I might have feelings for that person in a casual conversation so he put the dots together from my outburst.

My brothers and I separate from many hunts. I use to hunting with Ellen and Jo during that time so I wasn't with them in all their hunts so when Gabriel made his appearance with them I didn't know who he was till he zapped them to TV land- they were missing for days and by then Gabriel and I were seeing each other for three years on and off again.

"Elena-" he began.

"Don't! I don't want you near me and I don't want you near my family. If I see you again I will stick an angel blade in you," I promised locking eyes with his finally.

I didn't see his expression before I stormed out. I just couldn't deal with the idea of how easy it was for me to be duped. I was never able to forget that fact. Especially when the angel's called me Gabriel's vessel like Dean was Michael's and Sam was Lucifer's. Our existence just someone else's plan. I was played like a chess piece on a board. I feel so stupid. I raked my hand through my hair pressing my forehead on to the leather seats of the impala.

I wanted to throw my memories of him in the back of my brain.

"I'm sorry Elena," Sam had said later that day and I hugged him tightly breaking down for the first time since Dean's death.

End of Flashback.

"Elena," said Gordon waking me up from my daydream. "Chief?" I greeted back with a lazy salute.

"Barbra wondered if you have a dress for the charity event," stated Gordon.

"Not you guys too," I groaned. "What's so important about going to an event thanking people who pay us fairly for protecting them and the city," I explained.

"You do realize that this event is for us," he explained.

"Oh so they want to thank us. They can do it by giving me my Saturday nights back," I told him.

"You can't weasel yourself out of this- it's compulsory," he warned her. I let out a childish whine.

"So shopping with Barb," he suggested pulling out his cellphone. I rolled my eyes- the Chief was so trying to get out of window shopping with the wife.

XXXX TIMESKIP XXXX

I eyed the table across the room which contained all sort of edibles that Dean would love. I was fitted in a tight black evening gown with gold trimmings and strappy heels.

As the Mayor droned on. I tried to reach for another glass of wine from a passing waiter only for Gordan to grab my hand and give me a chastise look. I sent him a look with eyes saying: 'It's free booze.' He sent me a look in return which read 'behave.'

I pouted feeling as if I was reprimanded. It's not like I wanted to come.

After the boring speech I made my way to the table. I studied the treats wondering what could I start with first. "I would suggest you try out the sardine sandwiches they are usually most popular with the guests," said a familiar British accent.

"Oh suit and tie- it's you!" I smiled. Remembering the old man in his ever dapper uniform.

"Miss Elena- as always a pleasure," he smiled at me. I smiled back. It wasn't condescending as most of the hicks of this party gave me as apparently me accent was rather unrefined to them. It had a Kansas drawl to it.

"So you holding this shindig?" I asked curiously. "No, my employer is the holding this event. Is it to your liking?" he asked curiously.

"It could go without the boring speeches and up tight married guys who like to stare at my ass," I informed him sending the man to my left a dirty look as he diverted his gaze back to his wife's conversation.

"Well sadly riff raff are seen in all classes of people," he stated. I giggled at the gibe to the rich asshat who looked affronted . Impressed the old man had some bite on him.

Alfred picked up an empty tray from the table. "Need help?" I asked him.

"Letting a guest do manual labor. Miss Elena are you trying to take over my position or do you want me to be fired?" he jokingly shook of my offer.

"I'm very bored Alfred. I'm planning on shoving as much food as I can in my purse then leaving to the drug to store to get a pack of beer. I just hope Gordon won't be too hard on me for ditching him and Barbara," I joked.

"Will you be deserting your date as well?" enquired Alfred.

"Well if you offering to keep me company. I won't say I mind," I joked.

"You're a beautiful lady Miss Elena so it grieves me to have to turn down any offer from you since I'm full timed employed- I can't give you the time you deserve," he smiled at me while refilling my glass. I laughed having some fun.

I giggled. "What are your plans after the party?" I inquired.

"Well after Master Wayne is safely in his bed I will be sitting down with a good book with a hot cup of tea," he explained.

"Tucking the boss in- how cute. I have to see Harry's beautiful hangover face while Laura tells me in great detail how rich old man slipped her one tonight," I bemoaned.

Alfred chuckled then he looked at her with a solemn expression. "I hope it's not too forward to ask but what made you chose this set of profession- being part of Gotham's police department?" he inquired.

I was silent for a brief minute putting my thoughts together. I didn't really have to think too long because I spent many of nights asking myself this.

"If I had to be honest- it's the only thing I'm good at. My dad taught me to shoot a gun when I was a kid. If it helps people- I would love to use my skills to help someone," I beamed exposing a part of my past.

Alfred looked distantly at a painting on the wall before giving her a smile. "I'm sure you had an eventful life Miss. You remind me so greatly of someone I know," he informed me.

I quirked an eyebrow questioningly wondering about the person Alfred is comparing me. Taking a glance at Gordon who was preoccupied I saw opportunity to strike or more like run.

"Well, I think I'm going to sneak off to my car while the chief is distracted," I told Alfred looking off to the side while the Chief spoke to the mayor.

"Miss Elena, I still have to thank you for your aid on our previous meeting. I have recently baked scones and I would be keen on you taking some of my hands," he told me.

"Well- if its English scones- I'm going to no," I smiled glad I didn't have to cook anything for tomorrow.

The room Alfred led me to wait in was the library. He told me to wait in this room while he goes to the kitchen. I was glad he didn't ask me to walk further. Wayne Manor was huge and I could already feel my toes loosing feeling in these heels.

I pulled of my heels and decided to browse the expanse of book cases. Sam would of loved something like this. Smiling to myself I reached for the old looking bible. The familiar Latin worlds on the pages reminded me of a time when I was optimistic of the help of angels.

"Et non est in alio aliquo salus nec enim nomen aliud est sub caelo datum hominibus in quo opertet nos salvos fieri," I read the familiar line out loud. I read this line frequently when I was faced with Dean living just a year after saving Sam.

"Neither is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved," a crisp voice translated. I jumped slightly. I wasn't alone.

This guy could be a creep or he could be hiding here like me or he could be hooking up with some and I interrupted. Endless theories popped in my head.

"Showing off," I quipped to the man in the darkness starring at the silhouette near the window.

"I wasn't the one speaking Latin in perfect pronunciation," he shot back.

"Well to be fair I thought I was alone," I pointed out studying him hands crossed and the straps of my heels clutched in my right hand.

"My question is why a beautiful woman prefer to be in this place when there is a party down the hall," he stated.

I rolled my eyes. Beautiful woman? This guy was more eloquent than the guy's on the road but he is still a man.

"I'm not a wine and dine sort of girl and if you must know I'm waiting for a friend then I'm leaving and I you back to creepily sitting in the darkness. Don't mind me," I shut him down as politely as I can. I wasn't about to be rich ass's one night stand.

"Honestly- I don't mind the company. I'm not much of party man myself," said the man pressing forward .

"Well- I'm the charity case here so- I'm sort of mandatory to be here. What's your excuse?" I inquired not believing him.

"I'm friend's with the host. So I'm just as obliged," he hums getting closer to where I stood. I got a look at his face and instantly thought back to the pride and prejudice movie I watched on paper view.

He looks like freaking Mr. Darcy. Dark hair sleeked back and suit. He had the tall, dark and handsome vibe going. Keeping my cool I tried to focus back at the book in my hands.

"This should be in a museum. It's an original translation from the Hebrew works of the 14th century. The books are already brown and the pages are brittle it's going to fall apart. I think you should talk to the guy who owns this place about investing on foam wedges-," he broke out in laughter that surprised me that I almost missed the shock on his face... I'm pulling a Sam- as Dean would say. He probably thinks I'm weird.

"Sorry- I'm surprised a police officer is lecturing about how to take care of a bible," he stated sending me a heart throbbing smile. I felt my face heat up slightly.

"Everyone has their hobbies," I stated tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "We all can't be spending thousands on frequent partying," I told him.

"Well everyone has their hobbies," he agreed with a secretive smile.

"So, who are you hiding from?" I decided to ask. His eyes widened in surprise while I inwardly smirked. He was hiding.

"I'm the newest Detective of GPD. I can tell you are hiding too," I stated.

"'Too,"' he repeated. "I thought you were waiting for a friend-" he began.

"I am- while I also hide from Chief Gordon and his wife before I make my escape. I can multitask so stop changing the topic," I told him playfully.

"Honestly?" he asked.

"Honestly- from one nameless stranger to another."

"Well honestly- I'm not that party type of guy," he shrugged.

"Well, you are going to need acting lessons because you can't fool me. It seems like there is more to you," I stated playing one of my very many alias FBI Perry. He stared at me a plastic smile planted with dark eyes going blank.

"Don't worry- I'm off duty," I joked shaking my head. As long as he wasn't killing or torturing anyone I wasn't going to push. It wasn't my business either.

"Miss Elena- I hope you weren't waiting long," my favorite British voice said cutting the tension.

"Finally Al- I was worried I am going to miss the my Korean Dramas," I smiled at him pulling my heels on haphazardly.

I received three containers. "This is a lot of scones," I stated. Looking at them in surprise.

"I know you take care of the Detective Gordon's children on Mondays. I decided to add a few extra," he smiled.

I recalled briefly mentioning to Alfred about having two jobs of a detective and babysitter and Alfred had jokingly mentioned he shared my circumstances with reference to his handful boss.

"Oh you remembered. You sure you aren't free tonight Mr. Pennyworth," I teased with a touched smile not use the such kindness.

"Again, Miss Winchester I'm truly regretful to decline," he teased back.

"Well you can't blame a gal for tryin'," I playfully allowed the thick Kansas accent to pool through.

"Well- it was nice meeting you Mysterious Man," I turned to my previous companion who was silently observing the interaction between Alfred and me.

"I'm-" he began about to introduce himself but I cut him off by turning around and hastily getting to the door. "Night Al!" I called out.

I didn't want to know his name. I didn't want to catch feelings towards guys like him. I walked down that path a long time ago with Danny a guy in my teens. Rich guy with a charming personality. You see end of the day girls like me didn't get guys like that. The girl's he wanted was the girl who needed protection and was a lady.

I was my own protection and drank alcohol like a pro. I was loud and preferred classic rock to classic ballads. I liked cheese burgers than caviar.

We were from different worlds and I rather save us the heartbreak. I needed to save myself the heartbreak. I wouldn't be able to function with another broken heart with it so fragile as it is...

Change POV:

Alfred watched the door close behind the lively Miss. Elena.

"Are you seeing someone Alfred?" asked the infamous Bruce Wayne starring at the direction Elena had exited. Alfred controlled his expression while secretly enjoying the perplexed expression on his ward. Elena Winchester always made an impression.

"I was mugged and Miss Elena was the officer on duty or more like off duty. She treated me in her home," explained Alfred cordially.

"You were injured?!" Bruce's voice jumped in surprise.

"It was a young child from the Narrows. She didn't see much use in pursuing it and I had to agree with her. I was taken off guard," he explained.

Bruce's face marred to various expressions. "You didn't tell me," he pointed out childishly.

"The issue was promptly taken care of," brushed of Alfred.

Bruce was silent starring at Alfred for another minute before deciding to drop it. Since Rachel and Harvey's death Bruce knew he wasn't as attentive to his health and spent his usual time conducting his appearance Bruce Wayne public imagine and being Batman at night.

Bruce stared back at the door that the Detective walked out.

"She doesn't know who I am," stated Bruce.

"She's been in Gotham for a four years. In addition Miss Elena is not one to pick up a Gotham Gossip column. I believe she would be more up to date with matters of the Batman given her occupation," Alfred shared.

"Who is she?" questioned Bruce intrigued. Alfred noted a spark awaken.

"Elena Winchester."

It's been a while guys. Sorry I lost touch. Been everywhere honestly. After all these years and many marvel movies. I still love the dark knight and Christian Bale's batman;)
