So, who's ready for another chapter? Sorry for the wait. I had a college paper to work on... in high school! I mean, what the heck! Well, at least I didn't take nine months to post this, as a certain someone predicted. But a over a month is a little too long for a chapter that's only going to be somewhere between 1200 and 2000 words. Anyways, yeah. Enjoy.
Disclaimer: I don't own Dragonball Z or The Possession. Even if I said I did, I only have about five dollars and a puffy black wig from Halloween.
There was definitely a ki in that box. It was small, but it was there. It had a really funny feel to it, too, but it was almost pleasant, like the sickly sweet smell of a corpse. It was strange, how good it felt. Gohan felt drawn to it. He leaned in, reaching out touch it. He was almost there-
"GOHAN!"
The teenage demi quickly retracted his hand, surprised by Goku's sudden shouting, shaking his head. He looked at the box again, and it was just that. An old, worn thing with a poor paint job. Gohan blinked at it. What was that?
"Gohan," Goku said, quieter than before. "Are you all right? What happened just now?"
Gohan looked down at his hands. "I... I don't know. But I do know that there's a ki in there. It tried to... drag me in, or something. And I think it almost did." He looked up to meet his father's eyes. "We can't let this... this thing near Goten again. It might be dangerous. We have to get rid of it."
"Yeah!" exclaimed Trunks. "If it can mess with Gohan, then it can really mess with Goten!" He looked at Goku, then at Gohan. "So, who wants to blow it up? What? No one? Well, then I'll do it." The lavender demi raised a hand, preparing a ki bomb, when Gohan waved his arms around.
"NO, TRUNKS!" When he got funny looks from most of the parents and a death glare from Vegeta, he used a calmer tone of voice. "Not right here. People will get hurt if you do that in here. For now, let's just hide it somewhere and hope Goten doesn't find it."
"Hope I don' find what?"
The scheming trio turned quickly to see Goten, rocking on his toes, waiting for an answer. "You guys're all actin' kinda funny. What is it ya don' wanna tell me about?"
Gohan was the first to speak. "W-well, Goten, you see, we, uh, well, w-we, I mean I-"
"We were, uh, deciding... what to... to..." Goku interrupted. "What to get you on your birthday! Yeah, that's it! A birthday present!" Goten tilted his head to one side.
"But it isn't my birthday yet."
"Um, yeah. We know," stammered Gohan. "But it's never too early to come up with ideas! Uh, right, guys?" Everyone nodded quickly in agreement. The answer seemed to satisfy Goten.
"Oh. Okay. Can I see that? Thank you." He took the box from Goku and happily skipped off, leaving a group of dumbfounded Saiyans. When Goten was out of earshot, Gohan slapped Goku on the shoulder.
"Dad! I can't believe you! You just... You just let Goten take the box! Now there's no telling when we can get it back!"
Goku held up his hands in a weak defense against his eldest son. "Hey, it isn't like I expected him to just reach up and grab it."
"You should have! You know how attached to it Goten's getting!"
"Hey, guys, guys," Trunks said, waving his hands up and down in a 'calm down' gesture. "Don't sweat it. I can get it. As soon as he sets it down somewhere during the next match, I'll hurry in and take it. Father taught me good. Isn't he just awesome? What a great dad!" Goku and Gohan glanced at each other before looking back to Trunks and slowly nodding. "Okay. Well, I'm gonna go keep an eye on him." And in the blink of an eye, he was gone.
Goku and Gohan stood there for a few seconds, looking on after Trunks, when the announcer called, "Round two of the Junior Tournament will begin in five minutes! Everyone please return to your seats! The families of those who were eliminated may stay to watch the remaining matches, but if you plan to stay for the main Tenkaichi Budokai, you must pay a fee!"
"So, I guess this is Trunks's chance," said Gohan.
"Yep," replied Goku.
"So... Dad, do you think it's weird that for once I agree that Trunks should be stealing?"
"Well, it's just one of those situations, I guess." The older Saiyan looked at his son. "But you still don't totally support it, right?"
"Of course not."
"Good."
Meanwhile, Trunks was searching amidst the dispersing crowd for his best friend. He could sense him; the problem was getting through so many adults and other kids. But soon, he reached Goten, who was still holding his box, deciding where to put it now that his mommy had already left for her seat.
"So, hey Goten," he said. "Looks like you'll be the first one up."
"Yeah, I guess so. I'm just wonderin' where I should put her."
"Um, her? Who's her?"
"This is her." Goten held up his favorite box. "I don' know what ta do. Mommy already left, an' I don' want jus' anyone ta hold her for me!"
Great, so he decided it has a gender now, thought Trunks. Maybe the ki belongs to a female, but really. What's next, he'll name it Barbie? "So, what's her name?" he asked, deciding to play along, the failsafe way to get what he wants from Goten without upsetting him.
"I dunno. She hasn' told me yet. But she likes me, an' says she'll tell me ee-ven- chili."
"The word is 'eventually,'" Trunks said. Then he had an idea. "Hey, since you have a match to go to, how about I hold onto her for you?" Goten hesitated. He never hesitates in trusting Trunks. That may not be smart, but at the moment, it was starting to worry the lavender demi. "C'mon, Goten. We're best friends, right?"
Still Goten hesitated. But after a few seconds, his gaze fell back to the box, and he leaned in a little closer, as if listening to it. A few moments later, he looked back up to Trunks and reluctantly handed it over. "She says she likes you, so it'll be okay." Soon, his usual friendly face became a stern glare. "But she doesn' trust you yet. An' you can't let anything, anything, happen to her. Okay?"
"Alright, alright. I'll just hang onto her for the match. I'll give her back when it's my turn to fight. How does that sound?" Goten paused for a few seconds, then he nodded. "All right. You go have fun, Goten."
"'Kay! Thanks!" Goten chirped. He then skipped off to get ready for his match as Trunks grinned devilishly and sneaked back to the other Sons.
Goten's match went rather uneventfully. His opponent was only about four years old, and had waddled off of the mat as soon as he saw that his opponent was older and bigger than he was. Trunks's match was next, so Goten went back to where he sensed Trunks was. But then the Bottomless Soda he drank before his first match kicked in, so he picked up the pace. As soon as he saw his BFF, he quickly said, "TrunkscanIhaveherbacknowbecauseIreallyhaftapeean' IwannaseeherbecauseImissheran'IreallyhaftaPEE!"
Trunks, of course, had been around Goten enough to understand him; he often talked like that during their spars if he had an 'emergency.' "But Goten, she, uh, she said she liked me, and she wanted to stay and talk a little longer. Isn't that right, Barbie?" Then, in a falsetto voice, he said, "YES, TRUNKS. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH I COULD JUST KISS YOU IF ONLY I HAD LIPS!"
"But Goten wasn't buying it. Surprised as Trunks was, he could tell. "You're lying to me," Goten muttered. "You're lying to me. You're lying to me. GIVE HER BACK TO ME RIGHT NOW!" Goten lunged for the box in Trunks's grasp. The lavender demi gasped and tried to keep hold of the box. But he was surprised by Goten's sudden outburst, and it slipped into Goten's arms. The wild-haired boy then quietly said, "I thought you were my friend," and ran off.
Goten made it to the bathroom before bursting into tears. He couldn't believe it. He lied to him, his own best friend! He was so selfish! He wanted her because he was jealous he was spending more time with her now! He knew that had to be the reason!
"My best friend, he lied to me," Goten choked out. A pause. "I know. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have trusted him."
Open me.
Goten jumped. He knew this box could speak to him, in his head, but he had no idea it could actually talk.
Look inside. I know what will make you feel better, my little Goten.
Doing as he was told, the demi slowly lifted the lid, as only he was able. He peered inside for a moment.
Then another.
Goten screamed.
Enjoy that cliffhanger. See you sooner!
