Jasper's Point of View

Lightning flashed outside, momentarily filling the dimly lit diner. I glared down at the monster's face reflecting back at me from my coffee. The bell on the door jingled merrily, announcing the arrival of some new happy soul... I envy this new person, even though I don't know them. A wave of childish happiness permeates the room, so unlike my own dark feelings. The new person is a young girl. I can tell by her emotions... almost as though I could taste it. What right does this girl have to be happy? The world is a dark, dismal place. One bite and she would know just how miserable "life" is... I feel a gentle tap on my shoulder, soft and fleeting like the beat of a butterfly's wing. I turn, a threatening glare fixed on my face, ready to scare who ever it is away. The young girl was smiling innocently. Soft brown ringlets framed her face, and her cobalt blue eyes shined with happiness and another emotion I can't identify. Excitement?

"I finally found you," she said in a melodic, soprano voice. "You change your mind a lot. Did you know?"

I studied her face, trying to figure out what kind of joke she was playing. All I could feel was a childlike mixture of happiness and relief. Her face was pale, delicate, beautiful. Too beautiful to be human.

"You're... like me?" I ask carefully. But she can't be. I can hear her heartbeat, swift as a hummingbird's wings.

"A vampire?" she asks, a tinkling laugh floating into the air. "Only half. My mommy was still human when she had me. She is a vampire now, though. Daddy turned her not long after they had me."

I stared up at her, confused. I was about to ask her how this was possible when she held out her hand.

"Come on," she said. "We have a lot to do before I take you home with me.

Our Little Angel.

I walk through the forest behind our house, pausing every so often to pick up the prettiest flowers I can find. Little Bella's wedding day... It seems like just yesterday that she walked into the diner, and angel of light in my world full of darkness. I look down at the bouquet in my hands. I had made it with all her favorite flowers but there was something missing. Looking around, I finally see it. Blue Agapanthus. Her absolute favorite.

I crouch low in the tall grasses, eyes on the great buck directly in front of me. My muscles tense, ready to spring, to feed.

"Look! Isn't it pretty?"

Bella comes up from behind me, holding a delicate blue flower in front of my face. I sigh as I watch the buck run away, startled by the young girls voice.

"Yes, it's very pretty," I say, turning to face her. Her face lights up even more and she claps her hands, careful not to crush the flower.

"I knew you'd like it!" Bella exclaims delightedly. "It's a blue Agapanthus. They're my absolute favorite flowers in the whole world!"

I chuckle softly as Bella spreads her arms wide, turning before she collapses to the ground, giggling.

Our Little Angel.

I twirl one of the little blue flowers between my thumb and forefinger, remembering our first hunt together. It had been so different from hunting humans, so much more difficult. But Bella had made it easier for me. She had made it fun with her childish curiosities, her simple distractions.

I sigh, shaking my head to clear my thoughts. She was no longer a child. No longer distracted (easily) by a pretty flower. She was growing up, getting married... Getting married! How much time had passed? I have to get back to the house...now! I turn and sprint back, careful not to muss the bouquet of flowers clutched in my hand.

My steps slow as I reach the top of the stairs. I can hear Esme and Rosalie's voice and Bella's laugh, slightly muffled, through the closed bedroom door. I walk up to Bella's door, raising a fist hesitantly to knock. Before I can, the door opens. Bella's standing there, in a beautiful white dress. It was strapless and form fitting down to the waist, where it floated out in a delicate floor-length skirt. A sparkling silver tiara and delicate lace veil adorned her head, nestled on top of a cloud of big, silky brown ringlets. I was mesmerized by her beauty. She looks so much older than she really is, yet the child in her still shone through her sparkling eyes. She giggles, twirling for me.

"What do you think?" she asks, then adds a little anxiously. "You do like it, don't you?"

I chuckle softly as a wave of self-conscious doubt comes from her. Rosalie glares at me pointedly.

"It's perfect, Bella. You look absolutely stunning," I assure her. Bella flashes a smile at me, delight filling her face.

"Now get me out of your head!" she says, pushing me playfully. "I don't want Edward reading your mind. He can't know what I look like!"

"I brought these for you," I tell her, holding up the flower bouquet. "I found all your favorite flowers."

"Oh Jazzy! They're beautiful!" Bella exclaims, throwing her arms around me. "And look! 'Something blue!' I needed 'something blue' you know. 'Something old' is my charm bracelet, 'something new' is my dress, 'something borrowed' is my mom's tiara, and now 'something blue'! The flowers!"

I watch Bella as she gazes appreciatively at the flowers, naming each one. Her face lights up more when she notices the blue Agapanthus.

"Oh Jazzy," she sighs, hugging the flowers to her chest. "You're always so thoughtful!"

Bella hugs me again, tighter this time, and I smile as I inhale her familiar, sweet scent.

"Anything for my little savior," I whisper into her ear. After a few moments, Bella pulls away, wiping tears from her eyes. She smiles happily up at me.

"All I did was bring you home, where you belong," she says. I hear Rosalie clear her throat and Esme give a dry cough.

"Oh! The wedding!" Bella exclaims. "Jazzy, you still have to get dressed! Hurry, go!"

I laugh as Bella pushes me out the door, all business once again. As the door closes, she pokes her head out.

"Remember, she says sternly. "Keep me out of your mind!"

When I finish dressing, I go downstairs into the living room. Edward's there, dressed in his tux, lounging on the couch watching TV. He looks completely relaxed, but I can feel tension and anxiety coming from him. He chuckles slightly, eyes still on the TV.

"I guess I can't hide my emotions from you, can I?" he asks, still not turning around.

"No, you can't," I reply simply, sitting down in an armchair. Careful not to think of Bella in her wedding dress, I add, "She makes a beautiful bride."

Edward finally turns to face me. He scrutinizes my face carefully and I can tell he's reading my thoughts.

"Edward," I say calmly. I push some of my calm emotions toward him and his face relaxes. Better. "Bella is like a little sister to me. She saved me, and I'll always be in her debt because of that. I love her like a sister."

"I know," Edward says. "I'm calm, you can stop manipulating my emotions now."

We both laugh as I slowly pull the emotions away from Edward.

"You know," he says, breaking the silence. "When she first brought you home, there were a few moments when I thought you and her... It was silly of me, but I did think it, just for a moment."

"I know," I say. "I remember that day well."

I tense as Bella turns the car onto a narrow dirt road. She glances at me and a grin spreads across her angelic face. I watch the needle on the spedometer drop from 250 to 100 in seconds. The trees on both sides suddenly take shape.

"We're ho-ome!" she says in a sing-song voice and suddenly we're in a clearing with a huge house towering above us, 500 feet away.

Bella drives right up to the house, parks the car, and gets out. I sit in my seat, tense. I can feel emotions coming from inside the house. They are wary, uncertain, protective. I am not welcome here. Suddenly, a wave of jealousy hits me. It is so strong I think her whole family must be feeling it. But I am wrong. This jealousy comes from only one person.

A tap on the window makes me jump. Bella is glaring down at me, impatiently. I take a deep breath and slowly get out of the car.

"Come on," Bella says, taking my hand and smiling reassuringly. "It'll be fine! Trust me."

Our Little Angel.

"Even though you all told Bella you'd accept me that day, I really didn't feel accepted for a few weeks, especially not by you," I say to Edward.

"It wasn't that easy," he replies, chuckling slightly. "It's not every day the youngest member of your family goes missing for two months only to show up with a complete stranger.

Before I can reply, Emmett walks in. I don't need to feel his emotions to know that he's nervous. His face says it all.

"Well," he says gruffly. "We're ready. I guess you better head out to the yard before I go get Bella.

My Little Angel.
