Chapter 4: What now?

Christine stared at the newspaper, completely speechless. She literally froze in her spot. Meg had taken a seat in a chair, waiting for Christine's reaction. It was several minutes before Christine finally spoke.

"What's going to happen now?" She asked Meg.

"I don't know." Meg answered just as the front door opened again and the two women stood up as Raoul came into the room.

"Oh I didn't know you had company." He said, glancing at Meg.

"I just got here, I came to give Christine the news." Meg replied, pointing to the newspaper in Christine's hands. "I should leave. I'll see you Christine." She waved before turning and leaving, closing the front door behind her. Christine looked up at her husband, a bit surprised that was home already.

"Hey…" He said as he walked closer to her, setting his briefcase on the piano. "…I guess you already heard now. I'm a bit too late." She nodded. "I also came home to say I'm sorry about last night. I know you were getting tired hearing about everything that's going on and I didn't stop talking about it. I'm sorry and I don't want you to be mad at m-" She stopped him as she raised her hand and stood up.

"Thank you for apologizing. I'm not mad at you. It's what everyone has been talking about so it's hard to avoid the topic."

"I'm afraid it will be talking about for awhile." She nodded.

"Do you think there will be a war?" She asked, setting the paper down on the piano. "I mean, is there is a war in the future?"

"I don't know, maybe. No one wants a war, but there's a high chance for war."

"I hope not. I hate war, never liked it."

"Oh Christine."

"I'm serious. I don't think it's necessary for men to go off and kill other men. Why do they do it?" She asked him, folding her arms.

"For honor, for country…men have been fighting for years. War is a part of life, we can't really avoid it forever."

"I'm just worried, that's all. I don't want a war or seeing you go off and fight, not knowing if you'll come home. And plus we're so close to the border, what if there's a battle right outside our house?" She started getting overly worried. Raoul quickly gently placed his hands on her arms, trying to calm her.

"First off, if there is a fight in the back yard, you'll be far away safe from danger. I will not have my wife in any danger of getting killed by a bullet or near an enemy soldier."

"Raoul, I'm sure most men would respect a married woman and keep their distance."

"Yes, but some men don't and would try everything they could to get their hands on a woman. I would kill any man who would try and lay their hands on you." She looked up at him and placed a hand over his heart.

"I belong to you, Raoul. No other man can take me away from you." She assured him, making him smile. "Come, let's have lunch together." She took his hand and led him out of the music room. Martha had finished making lunch as they entered the kitchen. Christine grabbed the plates and glasses while Martha brought the food to the table to set down. They sat down at the table for lunch; Christine asked how work was going for Raoul. He told her all the things that are happening now that Virginia has left the Union. She listened with interest until he was done talking. For the rest of the day, they spent it together. Christine was glad of the time she got to spend with her husband since she didn't know how much longer she had with him.
