Summary: DarkxLink story. Dark and Link have been living together for some time, and Dark uses a certain notable date to 'test the water' for the next step in their relationship. (This story was actually inspired by a comedy sketch by Marcel Lucont)
April Fool
Dark sat happily up in the oak tree that grew just outside his home with Link. From the branch he had perched himself on he could see inside at least three of the rooms quite easily, so long as Link didn't become suspicious about what he was up to and pull the drapes closed. Dark didn't really make such a habit of spying on his lover these days, especially not since he could have Link all to himself whenever he wanted.
Link was a bit blind to what the date was, and the fact that the calendar clearly showed the date as April 1st had completely escaped his notion. Besides which he wasn't really one for pranks, and so had never even attempted to catch Dark out with a practical joke, not that he thought such would be possible. On this particularly sunny April the first Dark had woken Link with breakfast in bed which he had left on a tray next to his side of their shared bed along with a note. It was the note that caught Link's full attention, and in reality should've alerted him to the fact that something was amiss. It explained that Dark had hidden a few notes around the house, and on each would be written a single word. The odd thing that escaped Link's notice was that Dark had done this without any reason or occasion. There were no fights to make up for, nor was it a birthday or anniversary, and Valentine's day had already been and gone. And yet the opportunity of a slight game had piqued Link's interest and just as soon as he was up and dressed he'd begun the search.
The first note was easy enough to find, in fact he found it before he'd even begun searching. It was quite plainly tucked behind Link's toothbrush and had the word 'me' written in Dark's sharp angular handwriting. Link carried the piece of paper and placed it on the coffee table before heading off to search for the other notes.
It did occur to Link that he had no idea how many papers he was searching for, but he held on to the hope that once he got the gist of the message, he would figure out how many notes needed to be found.
It wasn't long after searching for the second note that he found it; it's small white corner poking out from underneath a book. This note said 'you'. Link had frowned at that. One note said you and another said me. It certainly wasn't shaping up to be anything particularly exciting just yet.
The third note was much more difficult. Link had spent nearly an hour searching for the piece of paper when he finally found it. It was actually inside his boot, which he hadn't happened across since he never wore his boots inside the house. He rather suspected it should've been much easier to find if it had been placed on top but that it had fallen inside. Link fished out the piece of paper and read the short, simple word; 'will'.
Link stared at the word as he carried it over to the table to place it alongside the other two. He felt like he was missing something here. But it wasn't until he saw the three words together that it fully hit him.
'will you _ me'
Link's eyes widened and his heart skipped a beat! Could it be? Could Dark actually be trying to ask a very important and life changing question? Link felt his mouth go dry and he immediately sprang to his feet. Where the hell was that last word, the word to make the sentence complete?
Without stopping to think any further Link began to turn the house upside down. He emptied cupboards, searched through weapons, clothes and even under the sink, but still came up empty handed. He pulled all the sheets off their bed, turned every plant pot upside down and shook out every pouch, and still that final note evaded him.
And that was how he was one hour later. Dark chuckled to himself as Link drove himself crazy searching for that little piece of paper, but without noticing the obvious; the big red circle Dark had drawn around the date on the calendar. He had half a mind to go inside, wrap his strong arms around Link's waist, kiss his cheek and tell him it was all a prank but he didn't have the heart to….. or rather watching the craziness was just too enjoyable to him to tell him that there was no fourth piece of paper.
With a happy grin Dark reached into his pocket and pulled out the small box he'd been carrying around for the last few days and opened it up, letting his ruby gaze fall on the polished gold ring inside. He sighed contentedly, safe in the knowledge of how he hoped Link would react when he finally plucked up the courage to ask him for real.
