Chapter 4 Duncan and Jason

Jason found himself wandering around a back alley as he thought hard. Adam had none so gently thrown him out, with the instructions to 'get some sun and stop moping about.' That had been two hours ago, and now he was bored. Jason was bored to tears.

"There's not a lot of fun things to do now, would have thought not worrying about dying would open options." Scuffing his sneakered shoe against the dirty asphalt the young immortal glared. Adam was doing who knows what in the apartment, and now he was left to his own devices.

It never was this boring in Gotham; there was never a dull moment. Whether it was training or kicking some bad guy's ass, there was never a short supply of fun. Now though, Jason found that they had moved to a relatively boring town. Adam had instructed him to keep a low profile, so crime fighting was out of the question. Training with Adam, well he didn't even want to go into that one. The man was a slave driver and a freaking ninja in his strikes. Now that he thought about it Jason was kind of glad he was ordered outside today.

No way was he enduring another of Adam's freaking 'kick you till you drop unconscious' training sessions.

Jason found himself feeling at home in the dark alley. There was no better place for him than the dark shadows of the alley. Normally it would be filled with danger and excitement, but now the most dangerous thing here apart from him would be the rats.

He was stuck in the most boring alley of alley history. Yay!

Walking deeper he noticed the fog surrounding the inside of the alley. This was the part covered by the dilapidated bridge. Now this seemed interesting. No sooner had he reached a vent where the fog originated from than he stopped.

Uhh, his head hurt badly. He almost fell to his knees from the feeling of what felt like vertigo. Oh shit. He remembered that Adam had told him that this indicated the presence of another immortal. Great, just great. Normally when with Adam the presence detecting thing didn't affect him, although it had taken him a while to get accustomed. It was the not expecting it thing that hurt.

Adam had said it would take a while to get used to it. He'd also said he needed to be around other immortals more often so that it wouldn't affect him as strongly. His being a freshly new immortal was the cause of the reaction, although he was getting better.

Well, he mused. Adam might just get his chance to try out whether he was ready to meet new immortals. He just hoped it didn't end with him dead, permanently.

"Hello"

Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod, found himself traipsing through the dark foggy alley. He had been tracking down his old friend, and this was the last place he'd heard he was in.

"My name is Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod"

Silence met his words.

Okay, this most definitely was not Methos then. Methos would have jumped out of the shadows by now, laughing and smirking at him. He'd have that annoying smile while not explaining why he had been gone for so long. Two weeks his ass.

"Show yourself."

Duncan heard a scuffle before something slammed hard against a grate somewhere near him. Turning sharply he searched around for the immortal. His katana was already raised and he was in a defensive stance.

"Oh shit"

That caused Duncan's blade to lower just a tiny bit. More scuffling was heard, before the metal grate resounded loudly through the alley. Turning Duncan felt his eyes widen.

"Oh uh…hey. I am totally not in the mood to fight right now. Okay, I'll just get going if that's alright with you." The young boy, not yet a man more like a teen raised his arms in a clear sign of peace. "I'll just get out of your way."

Duncan made his way over to the teen and grabbed his arm before the kid could run off. 'Wait"

"Look man, I was just going home now. What's about we just call it a night and go our separate way." the boy squirmed in his grasp as he stared at the Katana hanging loosely from his hand. Oh, that explained his apprehension.

"Don't worry I won't hurt you."

"Yeah, says the man with the wicked looking sword in his hand." Jason snorted. Did the man think he was stupid or something? No one carries a sword around for the fun of it.

"I promise I won't hurt you. Not if you don't try to hurt me first." Duncan loosened his grasp on the boy's arm slightly, but didn't let go. "What's your name?"

"What's it to you?"

"No reason" Duncan shrugged. "I'm just curious, that's all." Jason eyed him suspiciously, but said nothing.

Duncan struggled to suppress a smile. The young boy was so feisty and had yet to stop struggling. He seemed pretty tight lipped too, hmm. "Could you tell me where your home is? I might be able to take you there."

Jason gave a grunt. Again, did the man think he was stupid? No way would he be telling the man where he lived. That was like stranger danger rule number 1. Don't bring strangers home and don't tell them where you live. "Sorry, I don't talk to strangers." Jason smirked.

Duncan gave a hearty chuckle. "Oh that's a good rule to follow." Leaning slightly he turned to Jason's ear. "I'm just trying to help that's all."

"Yeah right" Jason rolled his eyes. What was this man thinking that Jason was going to roll over and ask for his help? He didn't need help, and even if he had he wouldn't have asked this man. He gave him a glare.

"Seriously, I swear I am not trying to take your head." Duncan promised once more. The boy eyed him with suspicion before shaking his head.

"Nope don't believe you. You'd have let go of my arm if that was true."

"Well then, let's just try this without you running off. Is that okay?" Duncan asked. Jason shrugged before nodding. "Okay then."

The moment Duncan let go of his arm Jason shot out and ran through the alley. Duncan was hot on his heels as he closed in on him. Jason shot out with a fast punch to the man's shoulder, which Duncan quickly deflected. He twisted out of a quick grab from Duncan's part and swung out a leg to sweep the highlander's legs from underneath him. Duncan jumped and grabbed at Jason.

Jason kicked out with his right leg, before flipping in the air over Duncan's kneeling form. Cartwheeling he stood back up before running once more. Duncan felt exasperation as he ran after Jason. Reaching up to the boy he tackled him in what appeared to be a football tackle, and held Jason tight. Jason squirmed and squirmed, but the man held on tight.

"Now then" Duncan huffed. "Unless you have a membership to a self-defense club somewhere, then I believe you have a teacher who taught you all these moves. Who taught you?"

"No one" Jason hissed. There was no way he was selling Adam out to this guy. The man could torture him and he wouldn't talk. Fortunately for him, Duncan MacLeod was not that kind of person.

"Okay" Duncan shrugged. Letting go of the teen he helped him up. "You can go on your way."

"Just like that?" Jason asked. His eyes narrowed in suspicion as he eyed the man before him.

"Yes" Duncan nodded. "If you don't want to take my head then I won't take yours. I just wanted to help is all."

"Oh" Jason stared in surprise. "What did you say your name was?"

"Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod"

"You're the boy scout!" Jason yelled in surprise. He should have known. Adam spoke about many other immortals that he knew, including Duncan MacLeod. He really should have paid better attention earlier, when the man introduced himself. It would have saved him all the drama. "You're the highlander."

"Yes" Duncan eyed the boy before him warily. "Where did you hear that?" He didn't remember ever having seen the boy before. He was sure he would have remembered an immortal teen with as much spunk as this kid did.

"Oh from Adam, name's Jason by the way." Jason offered his hand.

"Pleased to meet you." Duncan shook the teen's hand before adopting a confused expression on his face. "Excuse me, but did you say Adam?" His eyebrows furrowed as he thought hard.

"What? Oh yeah," Jason nodded. "Adam talks about you and says that you are an eternal boy scout. He mumbles it mostly, but I can tell that you're both friends." He suddenly frowned. "You are friends right?"

"Adam Pierson?" Duncan asked in shock. How in the world had this boy met Methos?

"Yeah, he's the one who found me after you know, and I'm staying with him." Jason eyed the man before him in concern. This MacLeod guy seemed to be in a state of shock. "Uh are you okay?"

Duncan rubbed a hand over his head before nodding. "Oh yes. I am just surprised that Adam took on a student."

"Yeah, he says that he doesn't like to do it, but he's the one who offered to teach me first. I just accepted the offer. He's a nice guy."

Okay, now Duncan was incredibly surprised, Methos offering to teach this boy and being nice? What was that all about? Methos wasn't "nice" he was an ass, at times tolerable. This he had to see. "Well this is a coincidence."

"What is?" Jason asked. Duncan noticed that the boy seemed incredibly aware of their surroundings. Even though he had relaxed considerably since he had heard who he was, the boy was not completely at ease. It seemed that Methos was teaching this boy well.

"I've been searching for him for the past month." He answered, and it was true. The older immortal had just up and left. Two weeks he's told them, two weeks. Duncan had asked Joe if he'd seen Methos, but Joe hadn't. It seemed that Methos had gone underground, with no explanation offered. After much asking around Duncan had come here.

"Why?"

Duncan smirked. It seemed Methos' paranoia had transferred onto the boy. "He was going on a trip for two weeks and it's been two months."

"Oh" Jason smiled sheepishly. "That might be my fault. He's been instructing me for a month now. You know training me and all that stuff."

"A month?" Duncan asked. He would have guessed that the kid had trained longer. With the fighting skills that he possessed he would have guessed the boy trained for longer than a month, probably years. Methos was good; he'd give him that, but he wasn't that good. Was he?

"Yeah, he found me right after and we came here. If you want I can take you to him." Jason eyed the older man with excitement. He couldn't wait to see Adam's reaction to bringing his friend to him. He honestly didn't know that Adam had cut off communication with his friends. It was a kind of nice gesture though, Jason appreciated it.

"That would be nice." Duncan smiled.

"Okay then, follow me." The older immortal walked beside the younger one as he led him to Methos. The oldest immortal mentoring a newborn immortal? Duncan was sure the story behind that was worth hearing. What was so special about Jason? Sure he seemed like a nice kid, but what persuaded Methos of all people to take the teen on as a student?

This he had to find out.
