Two days after the twins were born, the passing of the father figure in their lives suddenly took hold again.
It was a Thursday afternoon. Eleanor was making dinner to take to Alvin and Brittany's the next night. With the twins, they barely had anytime to make dinner, so she offered to do it for them. This meant spending more on weekly shopping for Eleanor and Theodore. Eleanor didn't mind though, it was for her sister.
Another sharp pain in Eleanor's abdomen caused her to buckle over in pain. She grabbed the corner of the kitchen counter for support. Theodore wouldn't be home for another 2 hours, at least.
She tried to stand back up, only to be hit with another wave of unruly pain. What was happening to her?
Eleanor wiped the few beads of sweat that had formed on her brow. She began to feel an unfamiliar sensation between her legs. Looking down, she discovered that her inner thighs were drenched in blood.
All of the colour drained from Eleanor's face, the reality of the situation finally kicking in after 3 painful minutes.
She waddled over to the house phone, calling the ambulance. She sat down upon the paramedics announcing their departure.
Eleanor looked down at the blood slowly leaking from her inner thighs. Was she going to lose her baby?
Theodore jumped in his car, almost forgetting to close the door before he drove off. He sped down towards the hospital, somewhere he thought he wouldn't have to visit for a long time.
When he arrived, Theodore slammed his door shut and ran as fast as he could to the entrance of the hospital.
The receptionist scrunched her nose up at the sight of a chubby man with sweat stains all over his shirt, clearly out of breath.
"I'm...here to see…Elean-…Eleanor Seville?"
A look of sorrow suddenly flashed across the woman's face.
"Room 236."
Theodore couldn't remember the last time he had run so fast. Actually, he could, he was 7 years old and had dropped his ice cream, and so he began to run after the ice cream truck in hopes to get another.
When he finally reached the room 236, he pushed the door open and ran over to the bed, inhabiting his wife.
He couldn't help but cry at the sight. His poor Ellie hooked up to machines with all sorts of tubes coming out of her. Her skin, pale and her eyes shut.
"Oh Ellie…"
He gently ran a finger through her soft blonde curls. Her eyes slowly fluttered open, Theodore immediately wished she would close them again. The amount of pain and heartbreak swirling around in his wife's eyes made his heart hurt.
"Theodore…I'm so sorry."
Hot tears began to spill out of her chocolate eyes, flowing in a stream down her soft cheeks. Her voice was faint and weak.
Theodore hugged his wife as best he could, trying to avoid the numerous machines she was hooked up to.
"I lost our baby…I lost our baby."
She continued repeating those words into his ears, until he pulled back and stared into her eyes.
"It isn't your fault. It isn't anyone's fault for that matter. These things happen."
The strong stonewall Theodore had built came crumbling down, after tears began gushing out of his eyes.
The pair stayed in one another's embrace, before the doctor walked into the room. He smiled gently at the couple.
"I'm so sorry Mr and Mrs Seville. It was just to early in the pregnancy to save the baby. We did everything we could."
Eleanor cried silently next to her husband, as the events she thought were a dream, had been confirmed a reality.
Jeanette felt her heart break as she heard the news. Of all people in the world, Theodore and Eleanor were the least deserving of something like this. It was the last straw for Simon. When his wife told him, Simon stormed upstairs and locked himself in their bedroom.
Brittany sat in Alvin's lap, tears falling down her face.
"It's not fair. They didn't deserve this."
Alvin let a few stray tears fall onto Brittany's hair below. The sound of one of the twins crying being the only thing to distract them of the harsh situation their family was in.
