"Miss?" he ventured, edging closer. Shadows were deepening fast, but Kagomaru could see well enough to tell that the person he'd injured wasn't human. Silver hair, a billow of fur, and the slashes of color across cheekbones and wrists all pointed to one thing. She's youkai!
As a shrinekeeper, he knew a little about these legendary creatures, and his heart clenched at the sight of his arrow buried just below this one's delicate collar bone. "I'm so sorry," he murmured.
Shouldering his weapon, Kagomaru gently gathered the unconscious demoness into his arms and turned toward home. "I'll fix this. Somehow!"
