Chapter 4

"I cannot believe that you got us to come help you search through dumpsters," Cathy said, her hair pulled back in a ponytail.

"I can," Lucie said. "This isn't the first time he's gotten me to come along on these ridiculous outings."

"Oh come on," Peter said. "You never know what you could find. It's amazing what some people throw away."

"Actually, I do know what I'll find," Lucie retorted, "a lot of junk that I have no use for."

"It's not like I'm making you come," Peter pointed out.

It was early in the morning on the first Monday of their summer vacation. Most kids their age probably would have slept in. However, Peter had insisted on coming out early. It really didn't make much of a difference to Lucie as her brothers still had to go to school for another week, and they were always loud in the morning. Correction, it didn't make any difference to Lucie because her siblings didn't know the meaning of sleeping in or being quiet in the morning. Cathy had groaned and complained, but once the coffee started to kick in she became more agreeable.

"What exactly are we looking for anyway?" Cathy asked.

Lucie shrugged. "I don't know, really. Computer stuff. Hey, Peter, what are we looking? Preferably in English, please."

"Well you could… um…," Peter began. "Just try to find something that isn't destroyed and could be useful…"

"And looks like it belongs to something computery," Lucie added.

"Yeah"

"That is really not that useful," Cathy said. "But okay."

The next half hour was spent in an alley behind a company building that Peter had chosen. In all honestly Cathy and Lucie we're pretty hopeless and Peter ended up doing all the work while they kept him company.

"What does he do with this stuff anyways?" Cathy asked.

"Takes it apart and attempts to build something with it," Lucie answered.

"I do actually make things," Peter said. "Now can you help me get this bag back in?"

Lucie rolled her eyes and helped him. As if he actually needed help though. He sometimes pushed the 'I am still weak when I'm just Peter' thing to far. "Oh please, Spiderman," she whispered in his ear.

"Shh," he whispered back. Cathy still didn't know he was Spiderman or that Lucie was the Frozen Lily. She was a great friend but the more people who know a secret the less of a secret it is.

"You know, that brick is bugging me," Cathy said, pointing to the one brick on the wall that had rounded edges. "The corners are rounder than all the other bricks." It was a small difference and other than that it was identical to the other bricks, but once you noticed it, it stuck out like a sore thumb. For someone like Cathy the difference was really annoying.

"Not sure how to help you with that," Lucie said, pressing against the brick with her finger. To her surprise it moved slightly. "What the?!" She pushed harder against the brick and it slowly moved farther in.

"What are you doing?" Cathy asked.

"Investigating," Lucie responded. "The brick is loose so I'm trying to see how far I can push it in." Both Cathy and Peter stepped closer to get a better look at the brick. Lucie continued to push it in until they heard a click.

Suddenly the ground beneath them disappeared and they dropped onto a platform about three feet below ground level. They had about three seconds to take that in before the platform started moving down. They had all fallen over from the unexpected drop sat up as the platform lit up and what had been the ground closed above them.

"Okay then," Lucie said. "Not what I was expecting."

"Where are we going?" Cathy asked.

"Uhhh, down" answered Lucie.

Cathy rolled her eyes. "I knew that."

The platform was about the size of a small elevator. There were no walls or handrails. They weren't needed though. The platform just shot down a hole that was just the right size and shape. The platform was their only light source once the top closed off.

Peter was holding his backpack as he had been in the process of putting something in it. Lucy and Cathy hadn't even brought a back pack along as they weren't planning on taking anything they found home. Their bikes were still leaning against wall in the alley.

It wasn't long before they landed. There was a door on one side of the room. Lucie got up and opened it and immediately took a step back. The door opened onto a sheer cliff edge.

"Not afraid of heights, are you?" Peter asked, smiling.

Lucie rolled her eyes. "No, I am not afraid of heights. I was surprised and moved myself away from the drop to keep myself from potentially falling." Peter already knew this, of course. It was hard not to notice Lucie had a tendency to seek out heights instead of avoid them, like most people did, when you had been her friend for years. She probably had a better head for heights than he did.

"Yes," Cathy said scooting away from the door. "I am very much afraid of heights."

Lucie grabbed the doorframe to keep her from falling and looked around, trying to figure out a way down or up. She couldn't find anything but a large hole that had a ceiling several feet above the top of the door and floor far below if it had one. There were lights on the round wall just above eye level. There was what looked like a doorway on the opposite end but no way to get there.

"Give me something to drop," Lucie told Peter and he handed her a loose screw that had ended up in his pocket. She dropped it, but instead of it falling down to the bottom it appeared to float on something about a foot below them. Lucie scrunched her face in confusion.

"That doesn't make sense," Peter commented.

"What?" Cathy asked.

"It must be an illusion," Lucie concluded. She sat down and swung her legs over the edge. The side of her sneakers hit a floor a foot below where she was sitting. She stood up and walked around cautiously. The illusion of a deep hole disappeared almost immediately and just looked like a weird floor. "Yep, definitely an illusion." Peter stepped out onto the floor and looked around.

In the end they had Cathy close her eyes as she stepped out into the large room. They all agreed that it was a weird floor.

"So what do we do now?" Peter asked.

"Forward," Lucie suggested, gesturing at the open doorway.

"Don't you think we should go back?" Cathy asked. "I mean, there's probably a reason this place is hidden, right?"

"I didn't exactly see a way to get back up the way we came, though," Lucie pointed out.

"Maybe it's hidden," Peter said. "Like everything else in this place.

They went back into the small elevator like room, searched along the amount of wall they could reach (That be most likely place for something to be hidden anyway), and found nothing. They even tried shutting the door again, which did nothing.

"Well that didn't work," Peter said as they walked back into the big room. Cathy closed her eyes again as they stepped out. It didn't matter that she knew in her mind that it was just an illusion, it still scared her. The illusion was a really good one too.

"So do we go onward?" Lucie asked.

"Guess so," Peter answered.

"We don't exactly have a choice," Cathy said.

Still no reviews. I am sad. :( please make me happy.
