Secrets of the Lake ch. 4
Spencer was nervous going into a scanning. If she had internal bleeding, her life would probably never be the same. It would be hard to go back to normal. The doctor told her, "OK, now we need you to lie very still. Will you be able to do this yourself or do you need a sedative?"
"I could stay still," Spencer said, nervously.
The doctor smiled. "Don't worry, Ms. Hastings, it doesn't hurt. It will take a couple seconds."
Spencer wanted to tell the doctor that she wasn't worried about it hurting, but the doctor seemed to be doing her best to cheer her up so she kept quiet. She laid down on the table and the doctor told her she would be right back.
Spencer tried counting in French to calm herself. Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix, onze, douze, treize, quatorze, quinze, seize, dix-sept, dix-huit, dix-neuf, vingt…
And it was over. The doctors came in and helped her move back to her hospital bed. "The results will be in soon," the doctor from before said, as they wheeled her into her room. "Do you want us to send your friends back in?"
Spencer contemplated this. She did want to see her friends, but right now, she needed Toby. "Can you just send my boyfriend in?"
The doctor smiled. "Of course."
She left the room, and in a couple moments, Toby walked in.
"Hey," he said gently, taking her hand. "How did it go?"
Spencer shrugged. "Okay, I guess. I don't really wanna talk about it. I just want you to be here."
Toby smiled. "I can do that." He leaned over and pressed a small, gentle kiss on her cheek.
Spencer sighed.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm just worried," Spencer said, "what if it doesn't come out normal? What if I'm going to die?" She started crying at that.
"Hey, don't worry," Toby said. "We'll get through this. No matter what it is. I promise you, you won't die. You are the strongest person on the face of the planet, and you can do this."
Spencer laughed weakly. "I'm sure there are stronger people than me on the planet, Tobes."
Toby just grinned. "Nope!"
They both started laughing at that.
"Spence…" Toby started. "I don't wanna push you or anything… but what do you remember? You know the police are going to be here soon…"
"The police? Why?" Spencer exclaimed.
"Spencer… you almost drowned tonight and there is no way anyone thinks it's an accident. They want to find out what actually happened."
"Since when do they ever want to do that?" Spencer asked with a bitter laugh.
"Look, I know, but they are coming anyway and they are going to be asking a lot of questions. What do you remember?"
Spencer racked her brain, trying to remember something useful.
Toby seemed to notice her struggle, and asked other questions. "Was the person's hair blonde?"
"No… no. It wasn't. I'm pretty sure it was three people. Two girls and a guy. I think… I think the girls hair was dark… but the boy I think had lighter hair… I can't really remember."
At that moment there was knock at the door. The door was opened and behind it there were two police officers. Spencer squeezed Toby's hand, and he squeezed back.
"Hi, Spencer, it's nice to see you again," Officer Holbrock said.
"How are you feeling?" Detective Tanner asked.
"Better," Spencer replied, feeding them the same lie she had told to her friends.
"Ok, Spencer, we just need to ask you a couple questions. Answer them as best as you can, ok?" Officer Holbrock said.
"Ok." Spencer's heart started beating faster. She felt like this was some sort of interrogation.
"Why were you at Paige McCullers's house on Saturday night?" Officer Holbrock asked.
Well obviously they would start with the easy questions. "It was Emily's birthday party."
"And why were you outside? Alone?" Detective Tanner inquired.
"I was… I was going to set up fireworks on the dock for Emily. We were going to do fireworks right after the cake."
"And you didn't tell any of your friends that you were going out?" Officer Holbrock said, looking at her with an eyebrow raised.
"Well, I told Aria. I told her not to tell Emily, I wanted her to be surprised."
Spencer could feel her throat getting a little dry, and almost as if Toby read her mind, he helped her put the glass to her lips and take a small sip. She shot him a look with her eyes that said Thank You.
"Now, where did you first encounter your attacker?" Detective Tanner asked, curiously. Well, maybe she was faking curiosity, though Spencer could never tell. Whenever she talked to Detective Tanner, all she could think about was how that woman had to fix her hair. That look was out of style, like, forever ago. Spencer shook her head, thinking, 'No need to start thinking like Hanna.'
"I was in the garage and someone came up behind me."
"Do you know who it was?"
"No, I didn't see anything. Someone just came up behind me and held something to my mouth."
Detective Tanner nodded and wrote something on her clipboard. "Anything that could help us figure out who this was?"
Spencer told the officer and detective what she told Toby: "I think it was two girls: one with dark hair and one boy with lighter hair, but that's all I saw."
"What happened after they put the chemicals over your mouth?" Officer Holbrock asked.
"They dragged me to the lake and threw me in."
"The doctor's reports show that you got hit in the head hard. Do you have any idea what was used?"
Spencer shook her head no.
"Ok Spencer, that's all we need for now. If we find anything out or have more questions, we will come back."
The two people left the room and Spencer and Toby were left alone.
"You ok?" Toby asked.
"My head hurts," Spencer replied.
Toby kissed her cheek. "Hopefully the doctors will get back with your results soon."
Just as he said that, the Dr. Aliya, one of the main nurses working on Spencer, walked in. She didn't have a good look on her face.
"What's wrong?" Spencer asked nervously, yet curiously.
"We got your test results back," Dr. Aliya said, with a grim look.
"And?"
"It's positive. There is internal bleeding."
