Chapter 4: They Call It "Puppy Love"

The car ride from Selphie's house quiet and awkward. With Roxas and Namine both being as nervous as they were, the idea of making small talk didn't even cross their minds. Namine looked out the window. Houses from the local neighborhoods passed by her. Roxas turned and began driving down the street that Namine lived on. As he drove on, he happened to pass by her house. Namine, catching eye of her house, felt her heart skip a beat as soon as she noticed that the lights were on and her father's car was in the driveway. A gasp escaped her mouth without her noticing it.

"You okay?" Roxas asked.

Namine nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. Thank you."

"Good." He exhaled deeply. "So…" Poor Roxas tried to break the awkward silence. "I was thinking we could go to The Promenade downtown since there's quite a few food options there and there's a movie theater and a few clubs there too."

"I don't think we can get into the clubs." Namine laughed and shook her head.

Roxas scratched the back of his head as they came to a red light. "Right...my bad." He laughed nervously.

"The Promenade sounds great!"

Roxas smiled at Namine's agreement. They drove for about another 15 minutes before they got to The Promenade. Roxas drove through the parking lot searching for a parking spot. Unfortunately, there were none. He groaned after driving for over 5 minutes searching for a spot. Finally, Roxas drove out of the parking lot and over to a different, much emptier parking lot that was across the street and a little more down the road. It was starting to get dark as the sunset left a lavender hue in the evening sky. Roxas got out of the car and walked around to get Namine's door only for her to open it prematurely and accidentally smack Roxas in the side.

"I'm so sorry!" Namine apologized and smacked herself in the forehead.

Roxas grunted and rubbed his side. "It's alright, no biggie." He smiled and took Namine's hand helping her out of the car. She blushed, her face full of apology. "Really, it's fine!" He laughed.

Namine laughed. "Alrighty then!" She twiddled with her hands as the two of them began walking down the sidewalk.

"Sorry for having to park so far." Roxas said shoving his hands in his pockets.

"Oh it's okay! It's a really nice night out! Great weather we're having!" Namine put some hair behind her ear. She sighed heavily. "Oh boy, that was cliche to say!"

"Better than what I would've come up with!" Roxas smiled. He caught Namine's royal blue eyes and held her gaze while they waited at a crosswalk to allow them to cross. The beeping noise coming from the crosswalk speaker snapped him out of his gaze. "We should probably cross now." Namine nodded as the two of them entered the crosswalk. Instinctively, Roxas reached forth and took her hand. "Be careful, there are crazy drivers out here on Saturday nights." He said sincerely.

Namine smiled. The warmth of Roxas' hand holding hers gave her an unfamiliar sense of comfort. The goosebumps started popping up on her arms as his fingertips brushed over the top of her hand. She couldn't control the pink that flushed her cheeks and did her very best to hide it. Once across the street, The Promenade was buzzing with activity. It was definitely a Saturday night. A lot of kids around their age travelled with their partners and friends between restaurants, shops, and the movie theater. The fact that there were a lot of people around definitely made it easier for the two of them.

"It's buzzing tonight!" Namine said looking around.

Roxas nodded. "Yeah." He looked around for a moment. "So...are you hungry for anything in particular?"

Namine looked at Roxas, cocking her head to the side. "I'm not picky."

"Um…" He looked in the direction of an asian restaurant. "Do you like Korean BBQ?"

"I've never had it."

Roxas' eyes widened. "You've...never...had…" He took Namine's hand and started leading her towards the restaurant. "I think you're gonna enjoy this."

Once Roxas and Namine were seated inside the restaurant, the awkwardness started up once again. The server had brought them each beverages and each of them silently looked at the menu. Everything looked delicious to Namine. Roxas, on the other hand, like his friends could eat like a horse. He was almost tempted to order everything that sounded good. Namine set down her menu and twirled the straw in her glass of water. Roxas' heart sank as he struggled to make small talk. He finally groaned and hid his face in his hands.

"Roxas? Are you okay?" Namine asked.

He lifted his face. "I gotta be honest with you. I'm not good at small talk." Namine looked at him funny. "Like...I'm not good at starting conversations. I'm not good at coming up with things to talk about. Worst of all…" Roxas stared down at the table. "I'm not good at talking to you…"

Namine laughed. "That's funny."

"How?"

"Because, you just made small talk." Namine smiled. "You talked about something you're not good at." She folded her hands. "Well, I'm not good at Chemistry. In fact, I am absolutely AWFUL at Chemistry!"

"Really?" Roxas laughed. "I wish I knew that back in the 10th grade! I'm great at Chemistry! I would've helped you out, or at least offered to."

Namine laughed. "Thanks, but that's in the past. Time to focus on the present and college, which thankfully, I will not have to take college level Chemistry classes!"

Before Roxas and Namine could continue their finally smooth conversation, the server came by and took their food orders. The cool thing about the restaurant was that it was a price-fixe, all you can eat type of place. Hence, why Roxas was tempted to order everything he was in the mood for. Once the server brought their food, the two hungry teenagers began digging in. Roxas was surprised to see Namine going at the beef. He had never seen a girl enjoy beef so much in his entire life.

"So, what do you want to go to college for?" Roxas asked after he took a bite of chicken.

Namine dabbed her lips with a napkin. "Well, I would love to go to art school."

"Art school? You got one in mind?"

"Mrs. Yamamoto suggested The Art Institute of Twilight, but art schools are so expensive and it's so far from home."

Roxas nodded. "I've heard really good things about that school. My twin brother, Ventus, has a friend who wants to go there to be a Game Designer."

"That's so cool!" Namine laughed. "I'd love to go there, or any art school, or any college really that would get me out of…" She stopped, her expression turning serious. "Never mind, are you planning on college?"

"Yeah, I wanna go for Computer Science!" Roxas sat up, his face brightening up. "I'm really into computers and especially coding!" He sipped his orange soda. "Twilight Town University has a really good Digital Media department, so I think I'm gonna try to go there. Plus, my dad lives there, so it'll give me a few years to catch up with him since I haven't really seen him all that much throughout my life."

Namine sighed. "Must be nice…" she mumbled under her breath.

"Hm?"

"Nothing!" She quickly shook her head.

"You know, now that you mention it, I don't think I've ever seen any of your artwork." Roxas said stabbing his fork in his food. "If you don't mind, I'd like to see your it sometime." His fingertips tapped on the table. "I'm sure you're a great artist."

Namine smiled sincerely. "Thank you, Roxas." She paused and looked down blushing. "I'd love to show you my work sometime. Maybe you can show me a thing or two around computers so that I don't have to call Microsoft Support everytime I run into a technical problem."

Roxas laughed. "I'd love to." For the first time since the evening started, the two of them started to truly feel like they were connecting. He gazed into Namine's eyes. "You know what's crazy? I suddenly feel like I can talk to you about anything and everything."

"It's strange…" Namine smiled. "I feel the same way." She finished eating her beef. "Can we order more of the Korean beef?"

"Yeah! It's all you can eat!"

"I can't believe how much I'm eating here! I'm eating like a man!" Namine looked up as the server came back. "Could we get some more of the beef, please?"

Roxas laughed. "To be fair, the guys earlier were saying that I was eating like a girl."

"How so?"

"Well…" Roxas sighed. "I ordered a salad at lunch and I could barely eat."

Namine shook her head. "Wow, you did eat like a girl!" She teased.

"Hey thanks!"

Roxas and Namine shared a good, loud laugh. The two of them couldn't stop staring into each other's eyes. Roxas especially had it bad. He had seen some pretty girls during the last few years, but none had ever taken his breath away the same Namine did. His mouth suddenly became dry. Namine bit down on her lip gently as she failed to break Roxas' gaze. HIs hand slowly made its way across the table. Suddenly, a shadow of doubt hovered over him as he began to hesitate. Before he could pull his hand back, Namine reached over and rested her hand over his. Roxas' head started spinning, but he couldn't help but smile sweetly towards her.

After dinner wrapped up, Roxas offered Namine a walk around The Promenade. This time, it was completely dark by now. The plaza was lit up by the street lights illuminating it ever so slightly. The environment almost had a romantic feel to it. Once the two of them walked out of the restaurant, Roxas slowly locked his hand with Namine's and kept her close as they started their stroll. What started out as an awkward evening suddenly started to feel perfect, and Namine couldn't agree more with that thought. Roxas felt like he made it through the hardest part of the evening, until he saw a couple making out from the corner of his eye.

Oh boy, he thought to himself. Suddenly, his face started to lose color.

"Are you okay, Roxas?" Namine asked as she felt his grip tighten.

Roxas exhaled deeply and nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine." He caught eye of an ice cream shop shortly after. "Hey, you like ice cream?"

Namine perked up. "I love ice cream! Let's get some!" She pulled out her wallet. "My treat?"

Roxas smiled and nodded. The cute little couple made their way over to the ice cream shop. Little did they know that sitting at one of the patio tables at the shop was a peculiar and familiar figure. She wore a dark hoodie, hood up, sunglasses, and hid her face in a magazine and had a cup of cookie dough ice cream next to her hand. The figure watched from the corner of the magazine. She watched Roxas and Namine walk up to the ice cream shop. With it being dark outside, it made it tough for her to see with the sunglasses on. She tilted the sunglasses down being able to see Roxas and Namine laughing with each other.

"Excellent…" she whispered to herself.

"Selphie?"

Selphie gasped and looked behind her. "Riku!" She tried to shush him. "What're you doing here?" she whispered.

Riku looked at her funny. "Uh...I think the better question is what are you doing here?"

"I'm sitting here eating ice cream and enjoying the nice weather." Selphie said taking a bite of ice cream.

"In cognito?" He raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. Selphie simply put her hood back up and flipped her magazine back open. "You're spying on Roxas and Namine aren't you?"

Selphie sighed. "I'm just making sure that everything goes well. If it starts to look bad, I was gonna text Namine and help her out!"

Riku sat in the chair next to Selphie. "I guess we're in the same club." He sighed as he looked on towards Roxas and Namine. "I'm spying on them too."

"Here," Selphie slid her ice cream cup to Riku. "It's good for the nerves."

"Thanks," he chuckled and took a bite. "Mm, cookie dough, my favorite. So, did I miss anything while I was in the bathroom?"

Selphie shook her head. "Not really. They're just holding hands, making small talk, being cute."

"I'm happy for them. They seem great together." He leaned in his chair. "It's actually kind of a breath of fresh air, actually. You know, seeing an innocent couple like them." Riku laughed. "Something I'm incapable of."

"Incapable?"

"When you've dated enough girls for as long as I have, you learn to accept what kind of person you are and what kind of relationships you're meant to have." Riku sighed. "When you break a body part, it may heal, but it'll never be the same. It'll always be more fragile than it was before. The same thing goes for the heart. You find that it's better to just treat it with care and not risk getting hurt more."

Selphie took her sunglasses off. "But Riku," she looked at him. "Isn't life about taking risks? Like, what if you lose a huge life opportunity because you were too scared to go for it?"

"It's not always a matter of being too scared. Some of us aren't given the opportunity or it was taken away." Riku said with his head held low.

"Since when have you ever let anybody else bring you down?" Selphie asked. "I mean, I know we've only been good friends for a few years since Kairi moved into town back in the 9th grade, but I still knew who you were back then and this is not the real Riku." Her voice raised. Riku held his head low. "I miss the old Riku. You would've beaten somebody up if they said any of this shit to your face."

Riku sighed. "People change over time, Selphie. The world's not all black and white. It's a million different shades of grey."

"Be happy you said a million because had you said fifty, I was gonna punch you in the face." Selphie gave Riku side eyes. He couldn't help but laugh. She smiled. "I like it when you laugh. You have a really nice smile."

Riku chuckled and shook his head. "Thanks." He looked down and noticed that he ate all of Selphie's ice cream. "Whoops...if you'll excuse me...I'm gonna go buy you a new cup of cookie dough ice cream…" Riku stood up, but sat back down as soon as Roxas and Namine walked out. "I will do that as soon as these two are out of sight."

Selphie laughed. "Okay, deal." She tapped Riku on the back. "I know you don't like listening to what I said to you tonight, but I only say these things because I care about you, I really do."

"Well," Riku leaned back and looked over at Selphie. "You'd be the first to say that."

Riku and Selphie continued to hang out at the patio tables and spy on their targets. Meanwhile, just not too far across the plaza, Roxas and Namine sat over at a table over by the plaza fountain that lit up in vibrant colors. It cycled between red, blue, green, orange, and purple. The colored fountain reflected off of Namine's hair leaving a beautiful hue in the foreground.

At this point, it was starting to get to a decent hour. It was about 9:00pm. The clubs that were on the far sides of The Promenade stayed open until 2:00am, but of course, Roxas and Namine were too young to go into those and everything else closed at 10:00pm. With the hours getting later, and places starting to close, The Promenade started to get quieter and less crowded. During this relaxing time, Namine and Roxas enjoyed conversing and just got to a point where the other's company was enough to make the night enjoyable.

"No way! You have a Fall Out Boy bootleg?" Roxas asked, eyes widened.

Namine laughed. "Yes! My cousin knew that I love Fall Out Boy!"

Roxas rested his hand on top of Namine's. "I'm seriously regretting not asking you out sooner." His voice softened. "I wish I wasn't so scared."

"You know," she said placing her free hand on Roxas' arm. "The funny thing, is that I strongly believe that timing is everything when you meet people. Sometimes you meet the right people at the wrong time, but when timing doesn't work for you, it doesn't matter how right the person is. Honestly...I think you're timing is perfect…" Namine brought her hands back to her. "You know...right now, I just need to be surrounded by as many supportive and loving people as I possibly can...and this…" She looked into Roxas' eyes. "This feels like all of that and more, you know?"

"Namine…" Roxas softly said. He stood up and walked away from the table over the fountain. "Do you believe it's possible to feel an instant connection with someone after just getting to know them for one night?"

Namine stood up and walked over joining Roxas. "Well...that's hard for me to answer." She paused. "Only because...it's not easy for me to trust other people." Roxas turned around looking at her. "I mean...I trust my friends, but it took me time to know them and trust them."

"It's just that...when spend most of your life alone, and you suddenly meet someone that completes you in a way that you never thought could happen," Roxas inched his way closer to Namine. "You start to realize just how special they truly are."

"Roxas…" Namine's eyes started tearing up. "I know that feeling…" She ran up and took Roxas by his hands. "I know what you mean."

"What's your story?" He asked caressing her cheek.

Namine shook her head. "I'd rather not share. It's too hard to talk about."

"That's okay, I understand." He and Namine leaned against the fountain. "My parents got divorced not long after my brother and I were born. It ended on really bad terms, and as a way to avoid seeing each other, and since we were too young to understand, they thought it would be smart to separate us. I stayed with my mom and my brother went with my dad." Roxas sighed. "Well, about 8 years ago, my dad and brother came here for a vacation, and by some freak accident, I met Ventus at the beach. Despite my mother's reluctance, I met my dad for the first time. He's a very successful guy. He's given my brother a great life, has a great job, makes good money, and even re-married a couple years ago." He crossed his arms. "My mom fell into depression after that. She was so insecure about how much better my dad was doing compared to her that she tried to compete with him and when she failed, she would find some way to numb the pain and that's where the alcohol came in. Ever since then, I've basically helped take care of my mom as much as she's taken care of me."

"Roxas...I had no idea…" Namine said, her eyes tearing up. "Does your mom...hurt you?"

"Thankfully, no." Roxas sighed in relief. "Whenever she gets drunk, she's the goofy, flirty drunk."

"That's good…"

"Actually, you're the first person I've opened up to about this." Roxas said holding Namine's hand. "It's hard telling people about a dysfunctional family. You start to feel ashamed and almost blame yourself for it sometimes." With each word that came out of Roxas' mouth, Namine's heart sank more and yet, it filled with some strong feelings of empathy seeing as how she was with a guy that completely understood what she was going through despite him not knowing exactly what her situation was. "Or sometimes, you're scared because of what could happen if the wrong person finds out."

Namine turned and started walking around the fountain, Roxas trailing behind her. "This is why I cherish my time with my friends so much. It's an escape from what's going on in my personal life and I don't think about it." She laughed, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I mean...tonight felt like a fairytale. I know the average girl may not think of a date as anything more than just a night out with a guy, but to me, it felt like I escaped the real world, and it was just…" Namine paused as Roxas stood within mere inches of her. "Just you and me…"

Roxas wiped away the tears from Namine's cheek and brushed her hair behind her ear. He locked her eyes with his. He could feel that she was in the same pain that he felt. Whatever was causing that pain, Roxas couldn't bear to see this innocent girl in front of him suffer. Even if he couldn't make it go away long term or permanent, he could at least try and be a medicine for her.

"I feel so strange." Roxas said wrapping his arms around Namine's waist. "It's almost like...I see you the way you want me to see you, which is different than others do, and you see me in a way that nobody else does or expects." He laughed. "I'm not making any sense, am I?"

Namine looked up into Roxas' crystal blue eyes. "No, you're making perfect sense. That's what's so scary."

"Scary, confusing, and...kind of amazing at the same time." Roxas paused. "It's almost like we connect in a way that is impossible to do with anyone else." His breathing became heavier. "It almost feels unreal."

"Maybe this is a dream." Namine broke free of Roxas' grasp and walked further away from him. " Maybe I'm gonna wake up and I'll be back in my room sleeping underneath textbooks and notes. Maybe I'm imagining you and me right here."

Roxas came up behind Namine and turned her around. "Are you imagining that I'm about to kiss you?" Namine froze at his question. She stood trembling as Roxas leaned in and brushed his lips against her cheek. She shut her eyes and took in the moment. Roxas pulled Namine close to him and held her in a tight embrace. "I've always wanted to find someone I'd have this kind of connection with, and now I have." He whispered. "I don't want this night to ever end."

"Neither do I." Namine shook her head buried in Roxas shoulder. She finally wrapped her arms around Roxas and pulled him even closer to her, something she hadn't done all night.

Roxas pulled away to get a good look at Namine's eyes that sparkled with the reflection of the evening sky. "I might kiss you now...for real."

"I might be bad at it…"

"It's not possible."

Roxas smiled. He moved his hand to the back of Namine's head before leaning in and planting a tender kiss on her lips. What felt like stream of blood rushing through Namine's body suddenly felt like rapids. It suddenly became harder to breathe and yet, she didn't panic. Instead, she trusted what her mind and heart wanted. Right now, it was Roxas. Namine leaned in and kissed Roxas back creating a beautiful moment for them between the emptiness of the plaza and the colorful fountains behind them. She moved her arms up until they were wrapped around Roxas' neck. Roxas' other hand rubbed up and down Namine's back as the two continued to make out. It was funny to think that Namine figured out right away what to do.

Finally, the two of them broke away for air. Both speechless, all Roxas and Namine could do was laugh. Here they were, two broken souls, that somehow made each other whole and in the span of one night. Suddenly, Namine looked behind Roxas and saw that the clock had struck midnight. She gasped at the realization of how late it truly was.

"It's midnight!" Namine said putting hair behind her ear.

Roxas nodded. "It is." He paused. "Wait, you're not gonna run away from me, are you?"

Both of them laughed. "No!" Namine let Roxas hold her in his arms. "Besides, I don't have a glass slipper to leave behind for you."

"Very true."

"But," she sighed. "I should get going. It is getting late."

Roxas smiled and pecked her on the lips. "I'll drive you home."

The drive home was quiet and peaceful, but this time, for the right reason. The evening was enjoyable and memorable for Roxas and Namine. It had almost seemed like both of them learned so much about the other person despite knowing each other for a few years now. It was a night that could've gone on forever, but like all good fairy tales, it had to eventually come to an end. Roxas drove down Namine's street and pulled over to the sidewalk in front of her house.

"Oh no…" Namine whispered. She saw that the lights were still on. "I thought he'd be asleep by now."

Roxas turned off the car and wrapped his arm around Namine. She turned and looked at him before he leaned in and kissed her again. "Thanks for coming out tonight. It was amazing."

Namine nodded. "Yeah," she agreed, her voice shaky. "It really was." She reached for the door handle. Suddenly, the front door opened and in the doorway stood her dad. Her heart skipped a beat. It was almost like playing Slender. "Roxas! Drive!"

"What? I thought this was your-"

"-Just drive!" She cried. Roxas stepped on the accelerator and sped down the road and pulled into a dirt lot that was around the corner. Namine was hyperventilating by this point. "I can't...I can't...I can't…"

"Namine!" Roxas cried out. He jumped out of the car and ran around to Namine's side. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"

"I can't go!" Namine cried. She buried her face into Roxas' shoulder. "I can't go home!"

Roxas held her close. "Namine…"

"He'll hit me Roxas…" She sniffled. "I wasn't supposed to come out tonight, but I did because I feel trapped inside that house! If I show up in that house like this, he will know I disobeyed him and he'll hit me again!"

"Again?" Roxas pulled away and looked directly into Namine's eyes. "Namine, does your dad hit you?"

Namine stood up out of the car and turned her back to him. "Unzip my dress." Roxas hesitated at first, but did so anyway. He gasped at the sight of numerous scars and bruises across her back and sides. He brushed his fingertips across her back before zipping her dress back up.

"Oh my god, Namine…"

"He does more than that…" Namine hid her face in her hands. "He calls me horrible things, sexually harasses me...I don't know what I did wrong!"

"Nothing…" Roxas whispered, breathing heavily. He held Namine's face in his hands. "You did absolutely nothing wrong. This is not your fault." He kissed her forehead. "You're amazing and special. Your dad must have major problems if he can't see that." Roxas pulled Namine back into a tight embrace. "Come on, come to my house, you can stay the night."

Namine shook her head. "I can't! I don't want to be a burden and I don't think your mother would be-"

"-Don't worry about my mom. She's out tonight with some guy she's seeing, so she won't be back until much later and she'll be too buzzed to care." Roxas cut her off. "I can't let you walk into that house, Namine." He rested his head on hers. "I can't let that guy hurt you."

"Okay…"

Namine finally gave in and agreed to stay with Roxas at his house. Thankfully, Roxas only lived a few blocks away from Namine, so it was a short drive away. Once they arrived at his house, Roxas noticed he was right about his mom being out that night. He took Namine by the hand and walked her from the car and into the dark one-story house. Right after turning some light on in the house, Roxas hurried into his room that was actually quite clean, and pulled out some extra clothes that Namine could change out of her dress and into. Namine changed in the bathroom while Roxas changed into his pajamas in his room. While changing, Namine thought that the last thing she was expecting to do was stay the night at a guy's house the night of the first date. This was a different situation though.

After Namine had changed into a red shirt that was bigger on her and some sweatpants that were also bigger on her, she met Roxas in his bedroom. He was pulling out an extra blanket and pillows from his closet. Her eyes scrolled the wall as she saw some posters of some of Roxas' favorite video games, movies, and bands. He also had a computer right by his bedroom window. Namine went and sat down on the bed while she waited for Roxas to finish his preparation.

"There you go!" Roxas sat next to Namine and wrapped his arm around her. "Those clothes should be more comfortable to sleep in." He smiled. She smiled in return and kissed him.

"Thank you." She softly whispered. "This is very sweet of you."

Roxas smiled. "You're welcome." He reached for a remote to the TV he had in his room. "So, I have Netflix and movies if you wanna watch something…"

"Actually, I'm getting really tired." Namine yawned. "It's been a long day."

"Good point, it's been a long day for both of us." Roxas nodded. He pulled the comforter out allowing Namine to climb into bed. Once she was under the covers, he leaned down and kissed her on the forehead. "Goodnight." He whispered. As Roxas was about to stand up from the bed, he felt her grab his arm.

"Please, don't go." Namine whispered. She immediately retracted her arm. "I'm sorry, it's just that...I feel so safe with you…"

Roxas scooted closer to Namine. "Are you sure you're comfortable with this?" Namine nodded. He smiled and got under the covers with Namine. "I promise I won't take anything further."

Namine smiled as she cuddled with Roxas. "I know, I trust you."

Roxas, with Namine in his arms, looked down at her. "You really trust me?"

"Strangely enough, I actually do." Namine said shutting her eyes. "When I'm with you, everything seems okay."

"I'm not going anywhere, Namine." Roxas whispered pulling Namine closer to him. "I'm here for you." He softly kissed her. "I'm happy you're here with me."

Namine drifted off to sleep as Roxas ran his arm up and down her back as if he were rubbing an infant to sleep. She inhaled and exhaled peacefully with Roxas resting his head on top of hers. He occasionally left little kisses on her forehead. If this was not the most intimate he had ever been with a girl, then Roxas had no idea what his past relationships even were anymore. Just as Roxas was drifting to sleep, he heard the front door open and close with a middle aged woman slurring and high heels echoing on the floor. He silently groaned. Screw it, he thought to himself. Roxas rested his head back on top of Namine's and fell right asleep.
