WHAT IS THIS? AN UPDATE? NO, IT CAN'T BE!
...
Okay, so this took like, 100 years, and it's really short, and not that good, but I needed to write something, and this is what happened. I think you'll like the Jolex in it, though. I didn't really proofread, so keep that in mind as well.
I also highly recommend the song at the start. It fits the end of the chapter perfectly (spoilers!) but it's also a really beautiful song. So, yeah, give it a listen.
Disclaimer: I do not own Grey's Anatomy or You Me At Six or anything else you may recognise.
Chapter 4: Cold Night
Don't you let me go this time,
Don't you let me go this time,
Don't go baby it's time for us to grow,
Don't go honey this way we'll never know.
- You Me At Six, Cold Night
"You should probably slow down," Heather said uncertainly. She and Jo had been at the bar for a little over an hour and while neither of them were drunk, Jo was close to it
Jo waved away her roommate's concerns. "I'm fine," she insisted, pushing her empty glass away. "Everything's fine. Tomorrow's my day off anyway." She shook her dark hair back out of her face, checking her phone for any messages. There were none, of course. She never had any messages, not lately.
"It's almost midnight," Heather sighed. She had a day off, too, but she didn't want to spend it with a hangover. It's not like she could just leave Jo by herself, though, so she sat back down and ordered another glass of soda.
Alex slammed the on-call room door shut, crinkling his nose in disgust. A pair of residents had been getting it on, and they weren't even attractive. Christ. What had gotten into everyone? "Don't go in there," he warned Cristina as he walked past her.
"Hm?" Cristina said, bored. Her hair was pulled back in a messy bun. She'd been awake for over 24 hours.
"The residents are crazy," he muttered in explanation. "No on-call room is safe." He grabbed a coffee from a nurse's cart when no one but Cristina was looking, and kept walking down the corridor.
"Everyone here's crazy," she corrected. "The residents are just crazier than the rest of us. Speaking of residents, how's your girlfriend?"
For a moment, he thought she might be talking to someone else. Then he remembered Leah Murphy. He grunted. "Not my girlfriend," he said. "And I wouldn't know. I've been avoiding her lately."
Cristina raised an eyebrow. "And why would you do that?" she asked. "Not like you to turn down sex."
"Ha ha," Alex said sarcastically. "Glad to see you have such a high opinion of me. I'm avoiding her because I think she might be clinically insane."
"Your girlfriends always are," she muttered, but when he asked what she said, she shook her head. "Nothing. Nothing at all."
"You're a bitch."
Rolling her eyes, "You headed home now?"
"Nah," he said with a shake of his head. "Think I might head over to Joe's. See if I can find a 22 year old with loose morals." It was an appealing idea.
Cristina punched his arm, scowling. "Pig."
"Oh, like you're any better."
"Tonight is a good night," Jo said. She'd crossed the line between tipsy and drunk about a half hour ago. "Or morning. Is it morning?"
Heather nodded. It was 2am. "Morning," she mumbled, her head pressed against the bar. She'd dozed off at least three times already. "It's morning." She pressed another cashew against her lips but was too tired to open her mouth enough to eat it.
"Karev!" Jo squealed suddenly as Alex sat down a few metres away from them. He nodded in greeting as he ordered a drink. Jo slid over to him and grabbed his arm. "Karev, I am incredibly drunk," she told him.
Alex glanced down at her. "I can see that." He pushed her off him, ignoring the pout he got in return. "Hey, Brooks."
A muffled response came from Heather before she shot up. "Karev, can you look after her for me?" she pleaded. Before he responded, she grinned. "Great. I'm going to go. Bye." She grabbed her coat and took off, leaving no time for any protests.
Jo groaned. "She's not a very good friend," she said. "Leaving me here like this."
"You two are friends?" Alex asked, surprised. Neither of the interns seemed like they had that many friends. Heather because she was annoying, Jo because she hated everyone.
"We live together," she explained. "I was staying with her while I got some renovations done but they found a bunch of asbestos so I just moved in with her. She's not a very good roommate."
Taking a sip of his drink, Alex sighed as Jo clung to his arm again. "Just how drunk are you, Wilson?"
Jo shrugged, holding her thumb and index finger half an inch apart. "Not very drunk," she said. "I've only had like, three beers. And a few shots. But that's it."
As Joe walked past to get some business guy who was probably meeting his mistress, Alex stopped him. "Is she trashed?" he asked.
Joe nodded. "Pretty far gone."
Alex gave another sigh. Just what he needed tonight. "I've gotta go," he told Jo. "You going to be okay to get home?"
"Probably not," Jo answered honestly, giggling drunkenly. "Maybe you'll just have to take me home."
Well. No. "Joe, can you call her a cab?" he yelled across the bar. Joe picked up the phone. "You got any cash?" he asked Jo.
Jo shook her head. "Guess I'll have to go home with you after all."
Jesus. She was sure persistent, considering she didn't even like him all that much. "I'll wait with you and pay, then. Sound good to you?"
"I guess," Jo said. She had suddenly stopped her bouncing and grinning and looked quite neutral, but she was still smiling slightly, and there was no way she was sobering up anytime soon.
Jo Wilson was a dangerous drunk, Alex decided. Her childish laughter was infectious, and there was the hint of a spark in her dark eyes- the kind of spark that could make anyone do what she wanted. It was dangerous because that very spark was tempting Alex to go with her offer of taking her home.
Sliding enough money over the bar to pay for his drink and anything she'd had, he stood up and gestured to the door. "Come on."
Jo started to follow but soon realised she couldn't exactly walk properly, and she grinned when Alex wrapped an arm around her waist to keep her steady.
The air outside the bar was cold and Jo hugged her jacket close to her chest. "I wonder if there are any monkeys around here," she said absently, looking up at the sky.
Alex glanced over at her wondrous expression, and burst out laughing. "I think there might be a zoo a few blocks away?" he offered.
"Can we go there?" she asked excitedly. She really wanted to pet a monkey.
"I think it'd be closed at this time," he said. "Maybe some other time." He pulled out his wallet and started counting the bills to make sure he'd have enough for her to get home. Deciding it'd be fine, he handed her a stick of gum. Her breath reeked.
"I'll hold you to that," she said as she chewed on the gum, and he muttered about how he doubted she'd remember.
A taxi pulled up and Alex handed Jo a couple of notes. "See you around."
Jo looked over at the taxi, and told the driver to give her a minute before turning back to Alex. "You need a haircut." She held up a hand as if to touch the dark strands. "I'm going to kiss you now," she announced as she stood up on her toes.
Before she could go through with her words, Alex gently pushed her down into the taxi. "Go home, Wilson," he said hoarsely. "Get some sleep." He went to shut the door, but she stuck her head back out.
"Just one problem," she said. "I seem to have forgotten where I live."
Alex groaned. Why was luck never on his side? Without stopping to think, he sat down next to her and gave the driver his address instead. "No funny business," he said to his wide-eyed companion.
Jo's only response was a wide grin.
Let me know what you think?
