Chapter Three: I never wanted to leave you alone

Kaito's POV

It wasn't really hard to get away from Shinichi and Akai-san. It was like they just let me go, but that wouldn't make any sense, would it?

I sigh lightly.

I'm in my secret room right now, looking into the mirror. This will probably be the last time for KID to appear.

Everything seems to happen in slow motion and I feel like I am in trance. I button up my blue shirt, before I put on my white jacket and cloak. My necktie's already in place. I put the top hat and monocle on. Last but no least I put on my gloves as I turn around to look into the mirror once again.

Why do you look so pathetic? asks a voice in my head. Why? I don't know.

I have a sad expression on my face, but I can't bring myself to look any different.

This will probably be Kaitou KID's last appearance ever. I should not look so pathetic. If the famous Phantom Thief 1412 goes down then he will go down the way he lived: mysteriously and with a big bang!

I force myself to grin.

"Yes, if he goes down then it will be the same way he lived." I voice my thoughts, before I turn around and leave the secret room… one last time.

All preparations are finished and I'm about to leave as the doorbell rings.

Who could it be? Maybe inspector Nakamori came by to arrest me again, now that I am not working with the FBI?

It doesn't matter. No matter if it's inspector Nakamori or someone else, I won't open the door.

"Kaito?" I was about to enter the secret passage, but one word held me off. All I wanted was to hear it, embrace the owner and just forget everything else. This voice… it belongs to Aoko!

Normal POV / 3rd person

A bit earlier

Kaito left no more than a few minutes ago. His words still resound in the room. Conan looks at the floor while Akai Shuichi is speaking to James over the phone. As soon as he is finished, he looks at Conan.

"James and Jodie will be here in about half an hour, by then we should have done something to get him back here."

The young boy nods.

The same could have happened to me… he thinks.

What if they ever find out about me? What if they hurt Ran?! I can't let that happen, but… I can totally understand Kaito.

He looks up, his eyes filled with determination. He wouldn't let Kaito do this on his own.

"I think I know where he lives." Conan finally says, the childish tone in his voice now finally gone.

"Then let's go, we don't have much time." The FBI-Agent says as he follows the shrunken teenager out of the room. He was always wondering why such a young boy knew so much about the organization, but with the boy's voice like this he wondered even more.

Had it always been so mature?

Kaito's POV

Just now I definitely heard Aoko's voice, but how could this be?

Did she manage to escape somehow?

I run towards the door and fling it open, but the one who is standing before me is not Aoko.

I grit my teeth as I look at the person before me.

"Tantei-kun."

He puts his bow tie into his pocket as he looks at me.

"As I thought. You have more than just one costume…"

"What do you want? How do you even know how to imitate Aoko's voice?!" I look at him angrily, totally ignoring Akai-san behind him.

"I saw her a few times during you heists. As for the imitating itself I used my bow tie." As soon as he finished speaking he looked into my eyes.

"Your first question is also very easy to answer: I would do the same if I were in your position, I would hurry and go there to save the person who's most important to me, but later I'd regret it. You know why? Because they don't care if you do what they want or not. You are a risk, because you know about them. As soon as you get there they will kill the both of you. They won't spare her, because now she knows about them as well."

I want to say something. I want to tell him that he's wrong, but if I think about it… I have to admit that…

"You're right." I finally say quietly.

"But if I just sit here and wait they'll hurt her as well. I have to go! I have to do all I can to save her! I don't care about my own life as long as I can save Aoko!"

"I did not tell you not to go!" Conan conters.

"I just told you, not to go alone."

"Tantei-kun…"

I look at him. He really wants to help me… but I cannot endanger him, can I? It doesn't matter if he really is Kudo Shinichi, right now he is Edogawa Conan. A little boy. I can't take a little boy on such a dangerous mission with me.

"I know that you only want to help me, Tantei-kun, but…"

I kneel before him, so that I can look him into the eyes.

"… I cannot endanger a little boy, no matter who he is."

I get closer and whisper into his ear.

"Or was."

I get back up again and direct my view towards Akai-san.

"I also can't accept your help, simply because I do not know you and don't know if can trust you, yet. Sadly there is no time to find it out. I know that you probably told the police that you would bring me back if I did not help you, but I have to save Aoko. If I come back alive you can do whatever you want with me, sent me back to prison or let me help you then. Please understand that Aoko's safety comes first for me. If you excuse me now, I have to go."

Akai-san closed his eyes for a tiny moment, before he looked at me. He looked as if he was about to say something, when he was interrupted.

"Where do you think you're going on your own, Kuroba?!"

I turn around and look at the person to whom the voice belongs. I did not think that something could surprise or shock me anymore at the moment, but to be honest he's the last person I did expect to come here.

"H-Hakuba!? Why are you here?!"

"I wanted to have a closer look at your apartment to see if I could find out more about why you became KID and how you managed to deceive everyone so perfectly all this time." He replied.

"I certainly did not expect to meet Conan-kun here nor did I expect to hear such an interesting conversation." He looked at Tantei-kun, before he turned his gaze toward Akai-san.

"You must be the FBI Agent who got Kuroba out of prison. I am Hakuba Saguru, by the way."

"Akai Shuichi." Akai-san responded with a nod, before Hakuba also nodded and continued talking.

"I wondered why the FBI could be interested in him, but now I think I understand at least a tiny bit of this whole situation. So you wanted him to crash some big organization, but now they kidnapped Nakamori-san for whatever reason."

"So you heard everything?" Conan asked. I could swear he debated with himself for a moment if he should act like a child or like himself, before he decided on the latter.

"Yes." Was Hakubas simple answer. He seemed to be stunned by Conan's mature voice, but he did not say anything about it.

"But that is not important right now." He added, before he looked at me.

"What's important now is Nakamori-san and how you suicidal try to save her alone! Accept our help, Kuroba!"

"'Our' help?' I raise an eyebrow at him.

"Nakamori-san is a friend of mine and so – I can't believe I'm saying this you while you are dressed up like that – are you, Kuroba."

That's right. Even though I often teased him and he always suspected that I am KID, we became something like good friends.

"That may be right, but that would be one more person, who I care about, who would be in danger..."

Hakuba sighed lightly.

"I chased Spider all around the world. Don't you think I am already in danger even if I don't help you?"

"Of course, Spider." I murmur quietly to myself.

"Just recently I found something interesting. Spider seems to be part of some ominous organization. Until a few minutes ago there were still missing a few parts of the puzzle, but now it all makes sense. Spider is part of the organization that kidnapped Nakamori-san and that you are after. Now I also understand, why he was so crazy about KID. It's because they want you dead for whatever reason."

"Yes…" I speak quietly, but loud enough for the three people present to hear me.

I sigh lightly.

"… I already knew this, Hakuba…"

He looked at me, a bit surprised.

"Really?"

He seemed to be thinking for a moment.

"Of course, that makes sense. He tried to kill you, it's only natural that you know about him."

"We should not waste any more time talking, the girl's life is still in danger." Akai-san says and brings us back to our original topic.

"You are right, but there's still one important question left."

"What would that be?" Conan added.

I have bad feeling this.

"Why are they even after Kuroba?" Hakuba asked as he looked at Conan, before turning towards me.

"What did you do to anger them?"

Oh crap, I know just where this is headed.

"So Kuroba, let me ask you this one question: What were your motives for becoming a thief and why are they your enemy?"

I hope you enjoyed it :)

Please tell me what you think (:
