Chapter II:
Arthur, the Assassin

Chapter two is here! The test is continued here!
I hope you like the chapter!

Arthur's POV

The fighting kept me on my toes and I started to feel the sweat dripping down my body, I didn't make much progress either.

I was now rushing at Akame with a knife in my hand. I wanted to show them that I could hold my own in close-combat with other weapons. Akame tried to slice me up again and after I blocked the first attack I knew she was not only way better than me, she was probably one of the best in the country.

We exchanged a few blows until the armored guy attacked me and I was pushed back. I was all the time on the defensive. I saw a few openings, but I couldn't take them on without giving the other assassin an opening to attack me back.

I started to jump back to gain some room and time to breathe, but they kept attacking, not giving me any chances to rest. I had to set up a wall of fire between me and them so that I was given a few seconds to catch my breath. After a few moments, Akame jumped through the flames and tried to stab me in my chest; I blocked her sword and managed to kick her in her stomach. My first effective attack.

But as I had gained some room to breathe, the cat-girl with the blonde hair attacked me. She was a bit smaller than me and she was cute, in a cat-girl kinda way… But she was more like a lion than a cat! And she was strong and fast at the same time. I had to dodge her claws over and over again to make sure that I didn't get torn apart.

"I told you she was a cat-girl!" Infernus schooled me in my head.

She is more of a lion! I corrected him.

"Damn sexy though!" Infernus pointed out.

You are a hundreds of years old, right!? I am pretty sure that makes you a damn old perv! I told him before I took a punch to my face.

"But you agree with me, right!?" He asked me as if my remark had never happened.

If she wasn't trying to beat the living shit out of me, maybe! Most probably… Yes!

"Knew it!" Infernus chuckled as I exchanged attacks with the blonde lion-girl.

I took another punch to my face; I started to bleed from my nose now. I jumped back a few meters and managed to set fire to the ground in front of me so that the lion-girl could just rush at me, fur and fire don't work well together!

Even though I had stopped the lion-girl for a second I felt how my feet got lifted from the ground and I sighed, I was in more trouble. As I got lifted up I saw a new face in the group; it was another boy, he got shoulder-length green hair, green eyes and red goggles on top of his head.

It seemed like he used some sort of trapping Teigu that he now used at me. He was moving his fingers as if he played a puppet with strings... Strings… I had been bounded by strings around my legs, how classy… But strings can burn…

But that would not work on him… I set fire to my body and the strings that entangled my feet started to burn a bit, but they didn't break… I was now upside-down and rather pissed.

"Well… Any other bright ideas?" Infernus started to make me mad for real.

Just one! I'll cut the strings by hand and fall down to the ground!

"Easy, but you are high up in the air…"

So what?!

I pulled out a knife and cut of the strings, they were harder to cut than I imagined. It must have been because I heated the strings with my fire that I could cut through them.

I didn't rush at the green-haired guy after I got up from falling down to the hard ground. The green-haired boy was too dangerous with his Teigu. I had heard about a Tiegu that could use strings for so many purposes that it was named: "Infinite Uses: Cross Tail". I did not want mess with that.

I hadn't heard about the Teigu the other assassins used though. But they were all amazing and on another level than me, I had been beaten, I couldn't keep going like this. I was out of breath, I had wounds all over my body and they were too many to take on, I was beaten.

I was about to tell them not to attack, but I got chills down my spine again and Infernus yelled at me to dodge. The sniper had a perfect shot at me; the whole group had tricked me so that I would be on the perfect spot, so that the sniper could take a shot at me.

I created flames around me like a hurricane, hoping the sniper would be distracted. But I saw the lion-girl/ cat-girl came rushing at me, I didn't stand a chance. She jumped into the flames and started to fight me. I didn't understand how the fire didn't hurt her. She kept punching me and kicking me until I missed a step and I fell to the ground. I rolled over and saw how my fire stopped swirling around. I was getting too tired to use my fire powers.

Damn, I'm too weak! I thought as I got back on my feet.

"You need more training from me!" Infernus told me as I defended myself from the lion-girl as best I could.

My body was at its limit, I couldn't keep up anymore. I tasted blood in my mouth and I was getting dizzy. But even if I was getting beaten I was smiling.

To think the Revolutionary Army had such monsters at their side…

"That is giving-up-talk! Come on, fight back!" Infernus always acted as if I was unbeatable, but I just wanted the battle to end. When I hit the ground after I cut the strings around my feet I felt how my body started to break for real, it was lucky that I hadn't broken any bones yet, but at this rate I would break something soon.

"SNIPER!" Infernus yelled. I saw the beam; it was going to hit me…

I was almost too late when I jumped out of the beams range. But the beam scratched my quiver and thanks to the beams force the quiver fell from my shoulders. I couldn't use my bow now, my best weapon was unusable.

The worst part about losing my quiver, it was on fire…

Perfect…

"It's gonna blow!" Infernus yelled at me as the lion-girl was rushing at me.

The beam from the sniper had set the quiver on fire! It was going to blow, all my arrows with explosives was going to blow, even if I could control fire I couldn't control explosions or push the flames away as it exploded! The lion-girl was going to get caught in the blast; it could kill her for real!

I rushed at the lion-girl she was looking from me to the quiver with an unascertained look on her face.

"GET DOWN!" I yelled; she wouldn't be able to get to safety fast enough.

I pushed her down on her back and covered her with my body as the explosion caught us both. Luckily; I took the blast. She was looking me in my eyes as I tried to control the flames so that they wouldn't reach her. She breathed heavily and I felt her breath reaching my neck, her face was only a few inches from mine. I noticed that she was warm… And a bit furry, but she was safe…

My body took no damage from the fire, but the force of the blast made my body get pushed down closer to the lion-girl.

I closed my eyes and forced the flames to disappear. I felt my body giving up as I had used almost all my powers and stamina, I rolled over to my back.

"You okay?" She asked me as she sat down by my side moving closer to my face.

"Having a beautiful girl in front of me is a plus, but I feel like crap!" I told her, making her smile.

"You did good!" She complimented me and she helped me up. I started to feel how my body screamed for rest, but I needed to stay sharp just a little longer.

"We are not done yet Leone!" The armored guy told the lion-girl as the rest of the team approached us. A little girl with pink hair in twin-tails was holding a big gun and I guessed she was the sniper.

"He's fast… But not ready for or kind of work!" The girl said and I felt my body started to feel numb.

A loli is talking down on me! I would laugh at it, but my body felt too numb to do so.

"He faced all of us at the same time! He even tricked us and was ready to die to impress us!" The lion-girl called Leone argued with the loli.

Leone… That's her name…

"Nice name, fitting!" Infernus comment was ignored.

"You want to fight more?" I asked the team. "I can't… I am not that strong I'm afraid! You guys are too many for me! You are all amazing, but I lack the training and time to be strong enough!" I didn't care if they accepted me or not, I was way weaker than them, they hadn't even started to sweat and I was ready to sleep for days.

The guy with the armor looked at the other assassins; the boy with the hood had gotten up and didn't look too pleased as he had a wound on his forehead; I didn't mean to hit him that hard… The black-haired girl, Akame, she looked at me with blank eyes and the green-haired guy with Cross-Tail. He didn't seem to take too much notice of me.

The armored guy looked back at me and nodded.

"You did good!" He said. "Lector told us you were new to the Revolutionary Army, but you might fit in with us better! Tatsumi here is new too!" He nodded at the hooded guy. "He needs training just as well as you, so you better train hard so you can!" The assassins smiled at me.

I had done it! I had been accepted… At least for now...

I was so happy and excited that my heart started to beat faster and I felt how my legs gave up on me. I felt how my body got ice cold and my eyes went dark as I fainted.

Next day, Night Raid's HQ

As I woke up I saw the lion-girl Leone sitting by the side of the bed I was resting in. She didn't have cat ears or a tail now and she didn't have fur. She looked like any other girl, but I could confess that she was nice-looking. Blonde hair, golden eyes and a nice figure...

Please don't comment! I told Infernus as I knew he had heard my thoughts.

"I knew you liked strong women!" He chuckled and I sighed.

"Ahh!" Leone almost exclaimed as she saw me all woken up. "You're awake now!"

"How long was I out?!" I asked her as I rubbed my eyes.

"A day, give or take…" She answered as she handed me my jacket. The deep-red jacket my brother had given me when I first joined the Army. He had given it to me so that people would know that we were brothers, since he had a similar jacket.

I could have sworn it had been torn ad burned here and there while I was fighting, but it almost looked brand new.

"Who mended it?" I asked Leone.

"Tatsumi did. He is good at those sorts of things!" She said it with a grin. The way she said it made me think that she and the other assassins had been used Tatsumi's handcraft skills whenever they wanted to.

I nodded and got up from the bed. I was still all clear in my head but I manage to stand up without help. I was still wearing pants, thank god, but I had no shirt. I put on my jacket and felt at ease, I liked the jacket…

"Wanna go and meet the others?" Leone asked me with a grin. She seemed like the sort of girl that always was happy or tried to keep others happy. But I knew she was a devil during battle.

"She looks nice! Just look at those boobs!" Infernus comment made me blush and I tried not to look at Leone's chest.

She noticed that I tried not to look at her. She rose up from her chair and looked up at me with a smile. She had gotten close to me, so close that I could feel her breath against my skin again.

"Did you see something you like?" She asked me flirtatiously.

"YEEEEESSSSS!" Infernus yelled in my head and I blushed even more.

"I… I…" I didn't know what to say.

"Hmmm?!" Leone tried to get even closer, but I backed a bit. "What? Do I not look good to you?" She asked as response to me backing away.

"DON'T SAY SOMETHING STUPID, LAD!" Infernus yelled in my head.

"It's not that!" I said in a whisper. Leone looked confused. "I have never been this close to a beautiful girl like you!"

Leone smiled at me and I felt as if you would die of embarrassment.

"THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!" Infernus yelled in triumph.

Damn beast-perv!

I had told Leone the truth, but I had said it because Infernus would have made my life a living hell if I had not. Having a spirit inside your body that could talk was really bad if he wanted to talk during the night.

"So you think I'm beautiful!" Leone remarked as she got closer again.

"Ehm, well…" I start to blush even more and I cursed Infernus, but he only laughed in my head, he found this situation funny...

Leone was almost close enough to kiss me, I wouldn't mind, but I didn't know her. She leaned in closer to me.

"Thank you for saving me!" She whispered in my ear. "But I would have survived that anyway!" She backed away a little and showed off a big grin again. I sighed. She was truly something else…

"Leone!" A female voice, stern and bossy was heard and I knew directly that it was the leader of Night Raid. "Stop flirting with him and get him in here!"

"Yes ma'am!" Leone sighed and she grabbed my arm and almost dragged me to through the HQ and into a big room with all the assassins and my brother assembled.

The armored guy didn't wear armor now, he had black hair combed up, with a heart-shaped pompadour and clear blue eyes; he was muscular, tall and smiled at me when I entered the room.

"Does he seem to sparkle to you?" Infernus asked me. And yes, he did seem to sparkle a little.

The young boy, Tatsumi, looked just as any countryside boy, but he looked novice yet strangely interesting as well. And he didn't seem angry with me after I had punched him in his head.

The sniper-girl with the pink hair glared at me as if I was something the cat had dragged in. Akame didn't seem to mind me at all. The green-haired guy looked at me but didn't seem to have an expression on his face.

"I heard that you could hold your own against our team…" I looked at the leader of Night Raid as she had spoken to me.

"I wouldn't say that, ma'am!" I confessed. "If they had been serious I would be dead now, I didn't stand a chance!"

The leader raised an eyebrow and looked at me intrigued. She was a one-of-a-kind woman.

She had short silver hair and purple eyes, or eye, she had an eyepatch over her right eye. She also had a mechanical arm. This was Najenda, the woman that had saved my brother…

Badass… It was the only word I could think of to describe her.

"Badass indeed! And those-" I decided to interrupt him.

Don't you dare keep up with the sexual harassment! I roared in my head and Infernus got to shut up.

"He did great!" Leone stated as she patted my back with such force I thought I would be smacked down on the floor. "He's a promising recruit!" She continued and she did sound optimistic about me being a member, but in the end of the day I did have a lot of flews.

"I agree!" The guy with the armor Teigu said, I could swear that his eyes twinkled as he winked at me. "With training he might become an excellent assassin!"

"I don't think so!" The loli had snapped. "He lacks proper mental stability! He is too slow when it comes to adjusting to the situation and he doesn't know how to use his Teigu properly!"

"But I am in his shoes as well; I don't even have a Teigu!" Tatsumi took my defense. "He took me down without using his Teigu; so he fits just as good as I do… Maybe even better…"

"Tatsumi…" Why did he say that? He seemed way too nice to be an assassin.

"Yeah, you don't fit at all!" The loli snapped. She didn't seem to like Tatsumi all that much, I felt bad for the guy…

"He might be worth the trouble…" The green-haired guy said but didn't say anything else; he only looked at the leader.

"Akame?" Najenda asked the black-haired girl and I knew her word was worth much to the leader. Akame seemed to be the sort of girl that was trustworthy yet could have strong opinions.

Akame looked at me with blank eyes. I looked back at her and tried not to look feeble.

"He's not used to handling his Teigu…" She said calmly, making Leone, Tatsumi and the taller guy sigh in defeat. I looked down on the floor and sighed as well. "But… He is a bit like Tatsumi… And if one of them can make it, I bet the other can too…"

The loli crossed her arms in discontent and Leone pulled me into a bear hug that would have killed me if she was in her lion-form. Tatsumi gave me a thumbs up and the tall, black-haired guy nodded in content. Akame walked away and so did the loli. The green-haired guy walked up to me and told me his name was Lubbock and that I'd better behave and not go against the "boss".

Lector congratulated me on joining Night Raid and told me we could talk later as he needed a word with Najenda.

The tall guy and I shook hands and he told me that he would train me and Tatsumi along with my brother.

"A boy like you better not give up! I suspect you to work hard!" He told me as his eyes sparkled.

"SPARKLES! What did I tell you! This guy sparkles!" Infernus yelled in my head and I smiled at the comment.

"I look forward training with you!" I told the tall guy, whose name was Bulat. "You too Tatsumi! And sorry for bashing your head with my bow!"

"Ohh; thanks…" He said as if he didn't suspect me to apologize to him.

"You did it, Arth!" Leone came from behind and grabbed me around my neck; even if I was a bit taller than her she still had a good grip. "Welcome to Night raid!" She giggled a bit as I tried to fight back her strength, but all that was in vain, I was still weak after the test fight.

As Tatsumi, Bulat and Leone started to talk to me about being part of Night Raid, I felt that I would have good times with them, but I also knew that hard times was part of being an assassin, that was the first thing Lector had told me when he asked me to joining Night Raid…
