25 Reasons We Didn't Know We Loved Miles Edgeworth
#6-Athlete
"A special someone," Pearl explained innocently, "You know, like Mister Nick and Mystic Maya?"
Maya puffed out her cheeks and groaned. Edgeworth smiled.
"Wright and Miss Fey…?" He looked over at Maya who all but had steam coming out of her ears.
"Nick and I are not—!" Maya started but Larry interrupted her.
"Wait so if you and Nick aren't—that means you're totes available?"
"I'm not available," Maya said indignantly, "Totes or otherwise!"
"So you do have a—er—special someone?" Edgeworth asked.
"I just want a HOT DOG!" Maya threw her arms out in exasperation.
Pess barked and stood up to lick Maya's face.
"NO! NOT A DOG—"
Edgeworth and Pearl were snickering as they started walking again up the path through the park.
Larry put his arm around Maya's shoulders, "Hey sweetie don't—"
Maya shoved him off, "STAHP! I have a defense attorney and I'm not afraid to use him!"
Larry pulled away from her sheepishly and his shoulders drooped, "I didn't mean to—"
"We're almost there," Edgeworth called back to them, "Just calm down you two."
As they neared the park's center the trees grew thicker and shaded the paved walkway. Birds flitted about the treetops singing and dappled light filtered over them cheerily.
"It's so pretty here," Pearl said.
"I do like this park," Edgeworth replied.
"Pearls Nick brought us here loads of times," Maya added almost defensively, "Remember the remote control boats and the rowboat?"
"This is the same park?" Pearl looked surprised, "It's so big!"
"All the better," Edgeworth nodded sagely, "All the better."
"Look," Larry pointed, "There's a concession stand. That's were they sell hotdogs."
"Oh man!" Maya shoved past Pearl and Edgeworth and all but ran toward the stand with no small amount of excitement.
She hopped giddily in place until the others caught her up.
Somehow, Edgeworth found himself on the hook for about a half dozen hotdogs, three orders of fries, and some ice cream. Larry, Maya, and Pearls had gone to find a table and he had to carry the load of food on his own to join them. Edgeworth set the order on the table and frowned.
"Are you sure Wright won't be angry if I let you guys eat all this stuff?" Edgeworth said, "You won't be sick?"
Maya was already halfway into her second hotdog, "Maw, he won't mind."
"Mystic Maya, it isn't nice to talk with your mouth full," Pearl said reaching for another French fry.
Edgeworth picked up a hotdog and frowned at it, "These are frightening…"
"Since when have you been such a wuss?" Larry teased, "Oh wait, I forgot who I was talking to."
Edgeworth glared at him and then took a bite. He grimaced and then offered the rest to Pess.
"I have an extra stomach just to digest hotdogs," Maya grinned waving a half-eating hotdog in the air for emphasis.
Edgeworth frowned at her, "Do you even know what hotdogs are made of?"
"Mystic Maya said that hotdogs are made out of cow lips," Pearl held up one little finger pedantically.
"If only," Edgeworth muttered.
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger," Larry said and took a second hotdog.
Edgeworth rolled his eyes at Larry and then bent down to rub Pess behind the ears. He chuckled at the goofy expression on his dog's face and then suddenly sat bolt upright.
"K-keep an eye on Pess for me," he said.
Without another warning Edgeworth jumped to his feet and bolted back down the tree-lined path from where they had come. About halfway down the path he jumped up and caught a branch of a nearby tree and pulled himself up and disappeared.
"What the—" Larry stared after him in awe.
"Wow," Maya said still munching away, "Who knew he had it in him?"
"Tell me about it," Larry shook his head, "I've never seen anyone move that fast in all—"
"Harry Butz you dumb whippersnapper!"
Larry, Maya and Pearl spun around to see their recent companion. She was an old woman wearing a beaver costume and holding balloons. She had her teeth bared menacingly at them.
"Um… Weh-Wendy," Larry blubbered, "Hi."
"Are these your kids, Harry?" Wendy demanded.
"Um… what? No, uh…" Larry stammered and got to his feet to greet her, "We're just hanging out. How are you Wendy?"
"Never you mind, whippersnapper! Buy some balloons for your kids!" Wendy said.
"Um well," Larry rubbed his head sheepishly, "They're not my—besides, I don't have any money—"
"What kind of an idiot do you think I am? Don't any of you whippersnappers have any respect for your elders? Why I rememberbackinmydaythekidsusedtohaverespectforthiereldersandyouwouldnthearofthemteelingnotaoneofthemoffnosiree! "Here," Larry held out the last hotdog, "Have a hotdog, Wendy."
"That's more like it whippersnapper," Wendy snatched the hotdog out of his hand, "Don't mind if I do."
"We'll just be on our way now," Larry bobbed up and down in a bow before grabbing Maya and Pearl and Pess and heading off to find Edgeworth.
"Do you want these fries?" Wendy asked.
"No no," Larry replied, "Help yourself!"
They left Wendy alone at the table eating their scraps and hurried down the path. Larry's hands shook as he held onto Pess' leash.
"Those hotdogs hit the spot!" Maya rubbed her stomach contentedly.
"What happened to Mister Edgeworth?" Pearl asked.
"I don't know," Larry shrugged, "But I think he went this way."
"Wow," Maya had her fists balls up in excitement, "Did you see him sprint down the path? I've never seen anyone run so fast."
"Yeah," Larry snorted, "I thought Edgey was only good at crossword puzzles…"
"Mister Ed-ji-worth is so strong," Pearl gazed ahead dreamily.
"Uh," Maya said, "I think he was running in fear from that old bag."
"Still," Pearl quipped, un-swayed.
Suddenly a head poked down from the tree in front of them, "Is she gone?"
Larry cocked his head and grinned, "Thanks to yours truly."
Maya sighed and rolled her eyes, "She's gone Edgeworth, you can come down now."
Edgeworth dropped to the ground gracefully and brushed himself off.
"That was entirely too close," he said looking around warily.
"Mister Ed-ji-worth," Pear asked sweetly, "Do you think you can help us find Mister Nick now?"
Edgeworth looked at Maya, "Find him? I thought you knew where he was?"
"Sure... Kinda," Maya shrugged, "He said he'd call."
Edgeworth frowned, "I fail to see how this is a dilemma…"
"It's not," Maya planted her fists on her hips, "But he's busy and he said he'd call when he was done. So you'll have to distract us for a little while longer."
Edgeworth opened his mouth to speak and then shut it again.
"I can help," Larry added happily.
Edgeworth only sighed in replay and they started back toward his building.
