Chapter 6 – Retrocognition and repentance part two
Gwent hasn't gone out yet, and in the next, next part, Gwen and Heather meet up somehow and forgiveness happens... Next chapter, will be more about Gwen and Duncan's complicated relationship, it's development, and how they came to know each other. This chapter may be very confusing and I can't say it'll be any easier to understand later, but I promised I'd have it up by ten PM, now here it is.
p.s This is basically a continuation of the last chapter when Gwen sees a black manifestation in the bathroom, but it's kind of skipped and only discreetly mentioned.
Gwen
There was a clatter in the kitchen that interrupted her in the process of changing into something appropriate for a dinner "date" between two friends. Duncan was pretty brave, she thought, not many guys with super jealous girlfriends would be so comfortable with asking another girl out to dinner. And think of the consequences he'd have to face if Courtney ever found out about it, she wouldn't want to be in his shoes. And what about her, going out with another man before she's even gone out with her own boyfriend? Even she felt bad about that, but she couldn't just cancel her date with Duncan, at such late notice. At the same time, Duncan was her only friend, she didn't want to lose him, despite barely knowing him for a couple of weeks. It was now 6:30, and Duncan would be coming in half an hour.
She had felt a presence while in the bathroom, and made sure not to open her eyes, she wasn't ready to face whatever it was that was trying to be seen. She had walked over to the place where she had dropped her towel before, and picked it up, wrapping it around her thin frame.
Gwen slowly backed away from her closet, only semi-dressed in a black and blue plaid shirt, a wife beater, and black leather choker. As she slowly walked out her door, into the hallway with the now flickering light, and began her descent down the stairs. The temperature had significantly decreased as it had in the bathroom before. As she made it into the living room, she froze noticing a shadow cast on the living room floor that seemed to have originated from the kitchen. It was here, that the temperature had been the coldest she had ever felt it since the bathroom. The intruder had somehow caused it, but… it couldn't have been…
She felt the air grow colder and colder, as she stood in place in the living room, as the shadow shifted across the floor moving nearer, one step, two steps, three steps closer. "Gwen," whispered a voice, it came from the kitchen. "who-who's there?" Gwen backed away, rubbing her almost frozen arms as she tried to get away, wishing Duncan would come to her rescue. The air grew even the more so colder, as she covered her eyes over her face, knowing that whoever it was that was hiding in the kitchen would be soon be standing in the entrance of the kitchen. She took a quick glance at the DVD player under the television which read 6:55, just about five more minutes and Duncan would be here, and she could leave, and she could go far far away from here. "S-stay back." The voice in the kitchen had grown louder, the man must've been just behind the wall right next to the kitchen entrance, separating both kitchen and living room; "Hmm, Gwen," it whined, "considering it's been so long since we've last spoken, let alone truly seen each other, I would've expected you to be excited to see your –"
As he said this, she gripped her necklace tightly, and a sea of relief flooded over her. She felt that same amazing presence that she had felt moments before she had met Trent for the first time, and they decided to go out. It was a foolish decision on my part, she thought, to go out with a guy I've known for only a day.
A warmth entered the room, blowing a gust of wind in her direction, she didn't recall opening a window - the coldness had gone.
"How-" she was cut off.
"It'll only be temporary," whispered an angelic voice.
"Why can't I see you?" she pondered,
"I've chosen to remain hidden," the voice replied. "Mom? It's- it's you isn't it? What happened to the man in the kitchen?"
"That wasn't any man you would want to acquaint yourself with," she sighed, "sadly you already have. I sometimes feel that it's all my fault... all the tragedy. I could've prevented it…"
"Mom… why would you say that? Do you know him? I didn't get a chance to see him, who was it? How do I know him?"
"I don't want to see you get hurt Gwen, I can't protect you from everything, Only God can… I'd rather you not know for the time being, just… be careful. I'll be watching over you, but I won't be able to save you from everything, I just didn't want you to see who was in the kitchen, it would've ruined your night. You should enjoy it. I was only here because He willed it, I won't always be I have to go, stay safe…"
The warmth subsided, and the room returned to room temperature.
"But, how-" she was cut off.
She averted her attention to the ringing doorbell, now that her mother had left, which showered a wave of relief over her. She stumbled over the two couches on her way through the living room, and to the front door, quickly yanking it open, and rewarding her savior with a grand hug.
"Are you okay?" Duncan quickly let his eyes leave the road for a second, in order to take a glance at the white skinned woman in the rear view mirror. "Yeah, why do you ask?" she replied unconvincingly, not even sparing a second to glance back at him, just looking out the window, making her seem even sketchier. "oh, I don't know, maybe because of the fact that you just hugged me when you got out of your house, and then you just blank me-no girl I've ever taken out on a date has ever done that, that-that's just wrong," he feigned confusion. "Oh, haha real funny."
"No really, you've been like a zombie this entire car ride, and even weirder, you gave me a hug, it's not like I saved your life or anything. And I was a couple minutes late. Care to share?"
She looked, at him giving him the second eye contact she had since exiting the house, and making their way to the restaurant. He, caught her glance, as she quickly looked away, not wanting him to see the concern in her face. She shook her head, "If I told you... you wouldn't believe me, you'd think I was crazy"
"Me? Not believe you? Gwen, I've heard and seen a lot of crazy things in my day, I've done horrible, unimaginable things…," he trailed off. "Are you okay?," she placed a hand on his shoulder. He chuckled, "don't try to change the conversation, you still have a question to answer. I'm sure nothing you could say would make me think any differently about you."
"What do you think about me?"
"Well, we've only known each other for a couple weeks, you remember when we met? It was at the pet shop. I don't know what I think, but you intrigue me, you've had a hard life… and it reminds me of my own," his concerned look smoothed over, "I think… if you weren't with Trent, and I wasn't with Courtney, I wouldn't mind having a little taste of those plump blue lips of yours," he flashed a pearly white grin, that could make any girl melt. She blushed at his obvious sarcasm, as he wondered if she would actually believe that he had a small little thing for her, even he wasn't so sure about his own feelings. He slowed down as the motorcycle approached a stoplight, "Gwen, I'm a criminal, I've lied, I've cheated, I've stolen, and I've been to juvie. I've acquainted myself with liars, cheaters and, thieves. Considering all I've heard back in the day, I'm sure I wouldn't think you're crazy."
"It's just something personal… You know the House, I've been having these memories… But, that's the whole reason I went there, you know? To face these memories, to face my fears. Maybe I'm going crazy or something, the house is probably just affecting me, but I've been hearing things, seeing things. I think-"
"I wanna leave Duncan, I don't wanna go back there. I can't not now."
The end. Sorry it's short, but stay tuned for more, maybe tomorrow. I'm gonna try to finish this fanfic, which means longer chapters. Part three might be the last part of chapter seven.
