… Fear was not the word…
… It was something more…
The unbridled power and sheer destructive thirst for violence proved almost too much to bear for one young man standing on the roof of his home watching the devastation unfold before his eyes.
… His name was Daisuke…
It was a modest dwelling within the city of Miyazaki, Japan. Located near Miyazakishi Central Park, it was in a prime position to serve as a viewing platform given that half of the house was already destroyed and leaning upwards due to the misshapen walls pushing up against the the roof. On the edge of the roof stood a small boy with his tiny Japanese Spitz puppy trembling in his arms as they watched the scene unfold together. The boys parents had been killed by debris from the house being crushed under the foot of an enormous creature bearing a perfect resemblance to Godzilla. The homes of many of his friends from school told a similar story, but there were no others on rooftops this day to join him in his silent and agonizing observation of what was happening around him.
Almost as far as the eye could see were nothing but massive clouds of dust and the smoking remains of what was once the city he lived in. The skies were a dusty brown from all of the earth kicked up beneath the Kaiju's feet during its rampage through the city. There was no military this day to face the monster at their doorstep. No planes, no tanks, not even a single soldier to help evacuate citizens or survivors. It was as if the city was being ignored completely. A few silent tears rolled down his eyes as he petted the frightened puppy in his arms and looked about before having his attention drawn to his left by the force of a colossal explosion that nearly threw him off his feet. He staggered a step, but remained on his feet as he turned and looked at the source of the blast even though he knew exactly what had caused it.
A few hundred meters away stood the towering figure of Godzilla. His charcoal grey and scaly hide was dull and partially obscured by the enormous dust cloud surrounding him, but his silhouette was clearly visible beyond the veil as it let out a roar of fury which pushed away much of the dust around its head giving the child a slightly clearer view of his facial features. The monsters teeth were a little disfigured, not being perfectly straight within its mouth almost like those of humans who had never had braces. A few teeth overlapping others with a large, reddish-pink tongue beyond glistening with saliva. The skin surrounding the mouth was curled into a frown and a snarl, the monster almost appearing to growl and glare menacingly at everything be it living or dead. The eyes were a deep brown with a yellowish tint and they held absolutely nothing except pure fury and an undeniable desire for violence.
The skin around its chin held some very small but prominent spikes as it led down into the monster's throat which was comprised of small, sharp, overlapping scales which got bigger the further down the neck his eyes went. The dust began to clear a bit more, and more of the creature became visible as it stood there taking in the sights to see what else needed to be destroyed. The creature's body seemed to be comprised almost entirely of what could be called "skin" than scales. The neck had overlapping scales, that much was certain, but otherwise the rest of the body seemed to be leathery, almost deformed skin. Bumpy, rough, and scaly in appearance, the creature's body was nothing short of robust and tough beyond the measure of conventional weaponry. Even though he was just a boy, the child standing on the roof knew that not a single attack the Japanese military had thrown at it had caused so much as a scratch.
The spines along its back were bigger than most houses he'd seen in his life. The largest spine was situated right around his mid back and was easily as large as a four story building, if not bigger. The spines led down its back and to its tail which was covered in much smaller spines, but was never the less very dangerous should he decide to use it as a weapon in combat. The legs were dense and heavy, leading down to feet that had three primary toes and a single inner toe. Each claw on the toes was easily as large as a medium sized bus, but the claws on his hands were much smaller but more dextrous and mobile. Used properly, those claws could do some serious damage to anything stuck in their path. His arms were a medium length for his body size. Not big, but not small. The elbows were close to his body and the forearms and hands held out and away in a readied position just in case of something unexpected. It was as if he was waiting for trouble to arrive.
In the meantime, as the dust around the Kaiju cleared, he began searching for something. Looking left, then right, then turning to look behind. Its eyes scanned the horizon for signs of something, though for what the boy didn't dare guess. Then, from out of nowhere, the ground began to rumble. The boy tried to stay on his feet, but he was forced to kneel down and sit in order not to fall over and off the roof. The shaking grew steadily worse over the next few seconds, with debris and what was left of other homes surrounding his own beginning to fall and crumble away. Slowly, the rumbling began to ease underneath him, but he could see a small dust trail following something that wasn't there. Was it invisible? No, not invisible. The dust stopped and some dirt flew up from beneath the earths surface. It was digging underground, but what was it?
There was silence for a moment, but it was interrupted when Godzilla roared. The high pitched, piercing shriek of a roar he was famous for cutting through the air and forcing the boy to set the puppy in his lap while he covered the tiny dog's ears. His own were ringing when it was over, and it didn't seem his hands helped the dog much as it began to tremble all the more while twitching its head from one side to the other. The boy could only hope that didn't make his tiny Spitz go deaf. He looked up to see Godzilla staring at the point where the dust had settled, and the uncomfortable silence again took hold. Seconds ticked by, and the boy slowly stood up while holding his puppy close to his chest before he heard a strange roar emitted from the earth.
It was a deep, bellowing roar sounding almost like the way an elephant could bellow rather than the typical trumpet sound they created with their trunks. The ground rumbled during the roar from the low frequency sound waves, and the ground in front of Godzilla exploded into the creature's face. Godzilla let out an even higher pitched roar than before as the dust overcame him. The area surrounding the massive Kaiju had turned into nothing but a giant dust cloud, and it took almost twenty long seconds for the dust to begin to settle and for the boy to see what was going on. Bit by bit, the silhouettes of the monsters appeared. Godzilla was still standing tall, and another large, bulky figure appeared at about his mid section coming up from the ground. As the dust settled more, the image became clearer. The head of the Kaiju known as Burtannus had appeared, and the large horn on its nose was now nestled in the lower abdomen of Godzilla with a slow and steady stream of blood trickling down from his punctured hide.
Godzilla was snarling and grinding his teeth together in pain as he glared down defiantly at Burtannus who looked up at him from beyond her horn with a look of defiance of her own. The two Kaiju remained still for a moment before Godzilla reached down and grabbed her horn, thrusting it away from him and removing it from his stomach as blood spurted from the wound and dripped from the other Kaiju's horn. The horn had gone in quite deep, much deeper than the boy had expected, and Godzilla was obviously feeling the effects from it as he took a step away and leaned forward with a low growl. Burtannus lowered her head and began bellowing at him, shifting her head back and forth displaying her horn in a gesture of aggression while scraping at the ground with her front feet much like the behavior of a bull preparing to charge. Godzilla backed away another step and shook his head before standing upright and letting out another massive roar.
Burtannus and Godzilla then charged one another, with Godzilla reaching out to grab Burtannus' horn before it could impale him again and shoving her to his right side with his right hand while using hi left to reach around and grabbed the side of her head. Godzilla held her in place for a few seconds before leaning down and biting her in the neck drawing blood. Burtannus bellowed out once more and tried to shake free, but Godzilla held fast. Burtannus' thrashing grew more frantic as the level of blood trickling from the wound increased, and finally she managed to bring a claw up and scratch Godzilla's left arm making him let go of her head. She shook free of his jaws and spun around to bludgeon him in the side of his head. Godzilla saw it coming but could not stand up fast enough to evade the entire attack. He took the blow to the chin, knocking him back and away as he moved his jaw around to make sure it wasn't broken.
Burtannus lumbered away a few steps and shook her head, turning to face Godzilla once more despite the wound she'd received. Her hide was normally enough to withstand such attacks, but with his increased size and power Godzilla was proving to be too much for her. Burtannus could obviously see that this fight was not one she could win, and she slowly retreated backwards step by step towards the hole she dug to come here. Godzilla stood up straight and watched her retreat, seemingly content with the fact that he had won the fight as Burtannus turned and slowly began to crawl into the hold. However, Godzilla would not let her go that easily. He reared his head and his spines began to glow an ominous blue coloration as he thrust his head forward and blasted Burtannus' rear end and tail as she desperately tried to get away to the safety of her underground tunnel. A few moments later, there was a mild explosion which threw dust into the air once again before it settled to reveal that the hold was closed off and Burtannus had escaped.
Godzilla leaned his head back and released a roar to the heavens to announce his victory to the world before calming down and taking another look around. The air was silent for a few moments, but was then replaced the the sight of something rather spectacular in the skies. The dust in the air was moving and creating a wake almost like water behind a boat on the ocean as something flew about beyond the dust layer. It was moving impossibly fast, and the boy could only make two guesses as to what it was. the figure continued to circle for a few moments as Godzilla noticed and looked up, watching the wake as it moved about before the cloudy skies had been so disturbed he could no longer follow a clear trail. Then, a shout came from above. It was a strange noise, almost like bird call but much deeper and longer. However, that roar was all the boy needed to understand what it was as the figure of Rodan shot forth from beyond the veil to dive bomb Godzilla.
The massive reptilian bird smashed the rough underside of his stomach into Godzilla's face before the colossus could react, scraping away massive chunks of skin from him as he fell backwards and released several roars of pain while thrashing about on the ground. Rodan circled overhead for a moment and then dive bombed again, reaching out with his feet and talons as he then began to hover above Godzilla and scratch away at his hide. The attacks at first did little more than cause some scrapes, but as he continued they began to draw small amounts of blood before he finally managed to cause a gash in Godzilla's side just above his right hip. Godzilla's tail came up and Rodan was forced to retreat to avoid the attack as Godzilla rolled to the side and slowly stood up. As he turned around, Godzilla revealed that quite a bit of flesh had been ripped away and he was now bleeding profusely form the forehead. For an instant the boy thought he saw a bit of bone beneath the miniature fountain of blood, but he couldn't be sure it wasn't just glare.
Godzilla was forced to close one eye as he continued to engage Rodan as his bird-like foe continued to circle about and dive bomb him over and over again. Then, something much more interesting happened to Godzilla. For a brief moment, his eyes flashed red before he slowly turned his head towards Rodan and opened his mouth. From within, a strange red lightning appeared rather than the blue thermonuclear breath he was famous for. The boy had never seen Godzilla use that attack, but this strange red lightning whipped about violently in the skies before striking Rodan down from the air. Rodan hit the ground hard and shook his head, just as stunned as the child was at what had just happened. The difference was that Rodan seemed to understand exactly what had happened whereas the child could not, and Rodan forced himself into the air and immediately retreated from the battle and into the skies beyond the cloud of dust that blanketed the skies.
Godzilla released a roar of victory to the skies, but his roar had momentarily changed. For a brief instant, the boy thought he heard a higher then normal pitched, but still rumbling sound come from Godzilla before the rest of his roar sounded the same as always. The boy was dumbfounded as to why Rodan would retreat so easily, but it didn't seem to matter anymore as Godzilla was back on his rampage and blasting the already destroyed remains of the city in some kind of strange victory celebration. The blue thermonuclear breath was back, and numerous explosions and fires began to start in the wake of his attacks. When his attack ceased, Godzilla did a quick once over to double check his work before turning towards the ocean and stomping through the devastated city towards the water. However, as he passed a certain point, the Kaiju's eye trailed over to where the boy was standing on his rooftop.
He wasn't blind to what had just happened, but the boy could not move. He was too frightened to do so, and all he could do was continue to pet his Spitz puppy as it trembled uncontrollably in his arms. Godzilla slowly approached both of them, stopping a few hundred yards away as he glared down at them. The boy looked up at Godzilla with fresh tears of fear and sadness in his eyes as he hugged his Spitz tighter to his chest. Godzilla's eyes flashed red once more, and for a single instant they changed shape before returning to their original state. Godzilla's head reared back, and his spines flashed blue before the boy's vision was engulfed in blue and white light.
… The devastation in Miyazaki, Japan caused an estimated loss of over 46,000 lives with an estimated 20,000 missing. In all likelihood, those missing were vaporized by Godzilla's thermonuclear breath…
Godzilla's attack was brief despite the amount of destruction caused, and lasted a total of only twenty six minutes. The citizens of Miyazaki who survived the attack recounted the sheer ruthlessness displayed by Godzilla, a normally passive Kaiju who would just as soon leave the human race alone and go about his business than attack.
All things considered, it could have been worse.
Reports are now coming in of a scene that was captured on film by a child watching Godzilla's rampage from beneath the shelter of the remains of his home. The scene depicts another child standing on the roof of his damaged home watching the horror unfold before the child himself is attacked by Godzilla. An interview with the child who held the camera reveals that the boy lost to Godzilla's attack was a close friend from school.
… He was six years old…
… He loved soccer, eating lunch with his friends at school, and… he loved Godzilla…
… His name was Daisuke…
