Patrick Jane was doing his best not to panic, and failing miserably. The white walls were too much of a reminder of where he had gone so many years ago. He was sure that Lisbon probably was someplace trying to find out who his medical proxy was so that she could get him committed. A smile almost came to his face when he thought of what she might think when she found out that she was in fact that person. He had made her his POA many years ago because he knew if it came down to something like this she couldn't do it. She would never lock him up, no matter how off his rocker she got. That's what he counted on.
Teresa was rounding the corner to Jane's room, but she just kept getting this weird vibe from someplace. Something telling her that maybe she shouldn't take the young girl to her father. Maybe it was that part of her that still told her that this Sarah was still somehow an imposter. She was about to think about it some more but her cellphone rang.
"Lisbon." She answered.
"Hey boss, after you sent us the lab report on the Jane Doe found in Jane's apartment we got a judge that would agree to the excavation but because of the subject matter she said that we had to get Jane's consent first. Do you think they'll be a problem with that?" Van Pelt asked from the other end of the phone call.
Lisbon didn't really know how to answer the question. Would Jane go for something like that? Who he let them desecrate the grave of his little girl, just because she didn't know if she wanted to believe that this little girl was Charlotte Jane? Then again if she didn't believe that this girl was in fact Charlotte, why was she leading the way to Jane? The sound of a familiar scream tore her from her thoughts.
"I'll get back to Van Pelt." She quickly rushed towards the room.
*Sarah*
He couldn't hold it together any longer. His mind kept racing back to what he had tried to do, what he had planned. He was going to end it all, he had called her to say goodbye but then the girl was there. Only a fool would think that he was worthy of saving. Nothing could save him now, Red John had truly destroyed him.
He heard the door open and Lisbon entered, but she wasn't alone the girl was there. She looked just like Angela. He was losing it, he was clearly losing it.
"Stay away from me!" he shouted as he got closer to the wall. If he could he'd claw his way to the other side, he hated that Lisbon was seeing him this way.
"Jane, it's okay. I'm here now, let's get you back in bed you're scaring the nurses." Lisbon told him soothingly.
She needed to keep him calm, he was like a wild animal. They had told her that some of the drugs were still in his system. She was worried for her friend, she was glad that she had told them she was his wife or she wouldn't be able to be here right now. She got the feeling things would be worst if she weren't there.
"Patrick, come on get under the covers no one is going hurt you."
"I'm sorry, I didn't meant too, I wasn't thinking when I called you earlier, you can tell them that I'm sane. I want to go home." He sobbed.
God he hated being so weak sometimes. He's father was right, he was such a weakling. All of his instincts were telling him to be angry with Lisbon. She had come to the house and pretended that she understood and that she had wanted to save him, but once he closed his eyes and found out that she had the power she had committed him. She had put him back in this place.
'I'm not crazy."
"Jane I know that, do you remember what happened tonight?"
"Yes, she was in my bed." He replied gesturing towards the girl at the door. "She's a trick, I know she's a trick, Red John wants me to think that she's Charlie but she's not. You're not my daughter!" he spat at her.
Sarah began to panic, how was this going to work if he didn't believe that she was Charlotte. She was, and she needed him to help her. Her palms were sweaty, and her brain was misfiring, it was putting the strangest thoughts in her head. One minute she wanted to run up to him and hug him, tell him anything that would make him see that she truly was his little princess, but there was also so something deeper in her that made her want to hurt him. Cut him into little pieces and see what his insides looked like. Then it came to her she began to hum.
*Sarah*
The humming was weird. Maybe because it came out of nowhere. She was standing there trying to calm Jane. The nurse was no help when it came to erratic patients. Twice she saw her reach for the panic button but she had gotten her to change her mind. She had this under control, she was always the best at calming Jane in situations like this, but it wasn't her doing the calming this time. He was angry, and she felt that maybe he thought that he was back in the sanitarium. He had to know that she wouldn't do that to him. Didn't he? Then it started, she began to hum.
She walked slowly into the room and it was like the humming was putting Jane in some kind of trance. It truly was a beautiful sound, and she had heard it before but she couldn't recall where. She saw him relax, but his eyes never left the girl as she approached him. She wondered if this was a special song that they had shared when the girl was younger. Then she leaned forward and whispered something in his ear. Lisbon watched as he grabbed her and pulled her close to him. He began to sob as she ran her hands through his hair and helped him get settled back on the bed. Lisbon saw that she wasn't the only one to relax when he got back under the covers, the nurse let out a breath that she had be holding.
"I'm sorry Lisbon, I feel better now. Could you give Charlotte and I a minute alone?" he asked giving his best smile.
"Jane I'm not sure, we still don't…"
'Teresa please, Charlotte would never hurt me. I just need a few minutes and then I'll do whatever you ask.
"Fine, I'll be right outside those doors though, so don't get any ideas. Nurse could I speak to you alone for a second?"
Jane watched as Lisbon led the nurse away from his room. He knew that they would be right outside so he had to work fast.
"I was so scared that you weren't going to believe me but I remember you use to hum that to me when I was little."
"I did." Was his one word reply.
"You scared me so much tonight, I have been trying to get back to you for so long and then when I made it there, when I made it home and you were going to hurt yourself. I just hate to think about it."
"Yes. I must say that I'm impressed how you made it all the way back home without anyone coming after you."
"I had to get to you. I picked the timing perfect, I know that by now he's back. He's back and he'll be looking for me soon. I just need to know that you'll protect me."
"Of course I failed you once before, but I swear with my life that I won't let anyone hurt you again Charlotte."
"I'm glad you believe me. I missed you so much daddy." She threw her arms around him. She just had to hug him. Make sure that it was real that she was with her father again. She knew now that everything would be okay he would protect her. Then she felt it, she felt her knife up against her back.
"Dad?" she questioned.
"I'm going to make this very simple for you. Tell me Red John's plan, or the next time he sees you his favorite knife will be stuck in your chest." He sneered one he had gotten her knife away from her
