I was seriously considering killing Izzy.
It might sound a little extreme, but if you're planning on breaking and entering you might as well do it well. And let me tell you, we were not going to do it well if I was on distraction duty.
"What the hell do I even do?" I asked, waving my arms frantically in the air. I was desperate now. I had never done anything like this before. It's not like I had never broken the rules before, but this was illegal. And it was all for some stupid party.
If my mom saw me now she'd probably slap me in the face and ground me for life, but she couldn't see me so. . . oops?
"Just come up with some stupid excuse. It's not that hard Clary," she replied, coming to a stop in front of the office door. "Come on let's go."
"You're seriously going to pay for this," I mumbled under my breath as we made our way into the office room.
The room was empty. "Why is no one in here?" I asked immediately.
Izzy didn't hesitate as she slid over the counter and into the file room. "I don't know, but keep watch. It'll take at least fifteen minutes."
I sighed plopping onto the office chair. This seemed way too easy. Could it be this easy? I guess so because it had been ten minutes and still the office was empty.
The sound of heels clicking onto the tile floor was what caused my head to snap upwards. Mrs. Perriweather and Jace Wayland were making their way towards the office.
"Izzy!" I yelled. "Get out of there!"
"I need like five more minutes!" she yelled.
"Jesus Izzy! Are you getting the whole school's numbers?"
I heard drawers opening and closing before she answered. "Just the juniors and seniors."
The seniors? She might need a little more than just five minutes.
"Clarissa?" Mrs. Perriweather asked. "What are you doing in here?"
"Uh it's Clary."
"Oh yes of course. Clary."
"I actually needed to talk to you," I lied, "about. . . uh my schedule."
"Your schedule?" she asked, tilting her head upwards, almost disbelievingly.
"Uhhh yes. My schedule."
She stood impatiently with her hand on her hip. "What about your schedule?"
"Ohh yeah sorry," I replied, giving a nervous laugh.
"Preferably today dear."
"Yes of course," I said.
Jace chuckled, raising an eyebrow in my direction.
"I was wondering if you could maybe switch around one of my classes?"
She cocked an eyebrow. "Which classes?"
"Oh yess um well my study hall."
"And?" she asked tapping her foot on the ground.
"Uhh. . ."
"Here let me grab your schedule," she suggested putting her hand on the door knob to the file room.
"No!" I yelled. "I mean uhh. . . I have it right here in my bag."
I rummaged through my bag for my schedule. The only problem. I didn't have a copy of my schedule. I sat there for at least a minute before Mrs. Perriweather sighed and said:
"How about I just go grab it?"
She left without my reply. I stood up abruptly.
"Mrs. Perriweather!"
"Yes," she replied impatiently.
"You can't go in there."
"And why might I ask?"
"Uhh because I don't feel so good." I swayed a little, trying to seem like I was about to faint.
"I'll be back. Hold on."
I fainted. Not literally of course, but I did fall over.
"Oh!" she squealed. "Jace help her."
I felt Jace's arms wrap around me flipping me over. I made the show of coughing a little when I slowly sat upwards.
Mrs. Perriweather crouched down in front of me. "Are you okay dear? Your face is so red!"
Hmm. . . I wonder why? It's not like this was embarrassing or anything. I was literally in Jace's very strong arms with an old lady literally crouched down in front of me. Not embarrassing at all.
"Yeah," I replied wearliy.
"Here let me get you some advil dear."
And that was the exact moment Izzy decided to slip through the file room door.
"No! I'm fine. I don't need advil!"
"Oh well okay then. Jace could you please take her to the nurse please?"
"Um yeah," he said, releasing me from his arms. It suddenly felt very cold in the room.
Izzy didn't hesitate as she ran out of the room.
Jace held out his hand for me to take. I let him help me up. His grip was tight and warm. Comforting even.
His fingers lingered before drifting away. We stood there in silence before leaving Mrs. Perriweather and the office.
The second we were out of the room I yelled at Izzy. "I am going to kill you Isabelle Lightwood!"
"Alright alright. Shhhh," she said, raising her arms in defense.
"I'm just going to leave now," Jace said, the corners of his mouth titled upwards. "And Clary?"
"Yeah," I asked.
"You might want to work on your acting skills."
"Thanks for the advice," I deadpanned.
The second Jace was out of ear shot Izzy said, "He's so into you!"
"No he's not," I denied. I could already feel my cheeks heating up.
"Hmmm. . . sure Clary."
