Chapter 6
Reyke is awake at five in the morning on January 26th, and he has no idea why. At one point, nearly an hour ago, he heard Asuna walking up and down the hallway a couple of times. For a minute, the five-year-old assumed it was morning and that he had to be up soon, but looking at the clock beside him just caused the small child to fall right back asleep after he realize it was still the middle of the night and he didn't need to be up for a few more hours.
Now, he was wide awake and trying not to leave his room because he could tell that his parents were in the living room, since he could hear them talking, and he was wondering why they were up so early, especially since Asuna was nine months pregnant at this point with his first sibling. Reyke, though, did not understand what that meant when Asuna told him that yesterday, and he was just wondering when his little brother or sister would be born.
After a few more minutes was waiting, Reyke cracked open his bedroom door and looked out, trying to see if his parents were doing anything when he heard Asuna start talking.
"Reyke should still be asleep right now. If he wakes up, tell him we went to the hospital and Itachi will come get him later, ok?"
"Of course, Asuna."
"Um… Oh, yeah! We'll call you if anything happens in the next couple of hours, and-"
"Asuna," Reyke heard Itachi start in, making the five-year-old wonder just what was going on so early in the morning. "We need to get going before your labor progresses any further."
Asuna sighed. "Yeah… mom, please make sure Reyke sleeps in for a while. He was up late."
"I will, Asuna," Reyke knew that was his grandmother, Asari Myuki. Why she was here he had no idea. "You just hurry to the hospital and have that baby, ok?"
"All right… we'll see you later then."
"All right, Asuna. See you later then."
When he heard the door close, Reyke decided it was all right for him to leave his room for a bit, and maybe he would find out why Asuna and Itachi headed for the hospital at this time.
"Grandma?"
Asari had just finished locking the front door when she heard Reyke speak up, and she gave him a smile. "Hello there, Reyke! What are you doing up, sweetheart? Your mother said you should still be asleep."
"I heard people talking… why is momma going to the hospital?"
"Oh," Asari laughed, picking Reyke up and sitting on the couch with him, hoping she could get to him to fall asleep again. "Reyke, your momma's having your baby brother or sister today! She's having the baby."
Reyke blinked, his eyes widening after a moment when he realized what was going on. "My sister is coming?!"
"Aha, yes, sweetheart! You're going to be a big brother today!"
"I wanna go see now!"
"Oh, Reyke," she laughed once again, kissing his forehead and starting to rock him back and forth a bit to start calming him back down for more sleep. "The baby won't be born for a few more hours… you'll get to see him or her later, ok?"
Sighing, Reyke nodded as he cuddled up with his grandmother, slowly drifting back to sleep. "OK…"
I get my sister today…

Later that day, Reyke looked around the hospital excitedly as Itachi led him down the hallway to Asuna's room. The five-year-old had learned that his sibling had been born that day, but had yet to be informed of whether or not he had a the baby sister he was hoping for.
"All right," when they reached Asuna's hospital room, Itachi looked at Reyke and smiled at him. "Your mother is very tired, Reyke. She might still be asleep right now, so, be quiet and be good, all right?"
Reyke nodded, having heard this not-lecture multiple times in recent months, as Asuna's energy was drained from the pregnancy and she had to run back and forth from doctor's appointments multiple times a week to make sure the baby was all right.
"OK…Will I get to see the baby today?"
"Probably."
The smile on Reyke's face made Itachi want to laugh, but he held back as they entered Asuna's room, trying to be as quiet as possible so they didn't wake her if she was sleeping still.
"Reyke!"
"Momma!" Reyke released Itachi's hand and ran right for Asuna, trying his best to climb onto her hospital bed with no luck, until Itachi made it over there and lifted him up, setting the small child in his mother's lap so he could hug her. "Momma…"
Asuna held Reyke close and kissed his forehead, happy to have her oldest child in her arms after not seeing him all day. "I missed you, Reyke."
After a minute, Reyke pulled back and smiled. "I missed you, momma! Do I have a brother or a sister?!"
Laughing, Asuna hugged Reyke again, even when he whined in protest. "Aw, you're so cute!"
"Momma! Tell me!"
"Oh," she sighed, releasing the hug. "All right… you, my dear little boy, have a tiny, beautiful baby sister."
Reyke's eyes widened and his smile brightened up the second he heard he had a sister. "I have a sister!" he threw his arms around Asuna's neck in a hug, making her laugh and causing Itachi to join in.
"Would you like to meet her?"
Reyke nodded at Itachi's question, not letting go of his mother for even a second. "Can I please?"
Itachi nodded, looking at Asuna. "I'll go get a nurse to bring her in, all right?"
"Sure. I'll stay here with Reyke and love on him for a bit."
"All right."

A few minutes later, a nurse brought in a nursery bed, and Reyke jumped off the bed so he could get a look at his newborn sister. While the nurse was wrapping her up in a blanket and saying how lovely she was to Asuna and Itachi, Reyke stood on the other side of the bed and looked at her. His little sister was small but chubby, and he could see she had a small amount of black hair on her head, which made him wonder what color her eyes were at the moment (it had been explained to him recently, by Itachi, that babies were, usually, born with blue eyes, and that the color would change over time).
The nurse picked the baby girl up out of the nursery bed, handing her to Asuna right away and then leaving the room. Reyke ran back over to Asuna's hospital bed and quickly asked Itachi to put him back on the bed so he could see better, which his father did right away. Reyke moved right beside Asuna, looking at his sister with complete and total awe. She was asleep, yes, but he was still amazed by her.
"Reyke, this is Emiko, your little sister. Emiko, I know you're asleep, but, this is your big brother, Reyke. He has been so excited for you." Asuna held Emiko a bit closer to Reyke so he could see her, and she knew he was, eventually, going to ask to hold her. "Isn't she pretty?"
"Mm-hm…" Reyke nodded slowly, focused on Emiko and how tiny she was. He has seen babies before, he's held newborns that he had met before, but, he had never seen one so tiny. "She's tiny momma…"
"Ah, yeah, she is…"
"Why?"
Asuna shrugged, bouncing Emiko very gently when the baby girl started to whine and fuss. "She just is. Some newborns are bigger than others."
"Oh. Can I hold her soon?"
"Of course! But let's allow her to rest, ok? She and I are both very tired, sweetheart."
"OK!" Reyke nodded, looking back at Emiko and smiling.
I'm gonna help take care of you, Emiko… I promise.
