Snape was an unhappy man, everyone who knew him was well aware of that fact. Now, however, was different; for he wasn't unhappy. No, he was more than unhappy, he was furious! How could that old coot summon him like one of his little underlings, expecting him to come when he snapped his fingers and demanded it! He wasn't some mutt to come at anyone's beck and call! If he hadn't been planning to go see the Headmaster in the first place, he would have turned him down flat.
- Flash back -
Severus was sitting in his arm-chair a glass of wine in his hand. He knew it was still early but he needed a drink to help himself calm down and think. Think over what he was going to do to save both his godson and the boy-who-lived-to-make-his-life-a-misery once again.
Sighing he stood up and went to stand near the newly mated boys; blissfully unaware in their sleep of the mess they had just created for him. From time to time Potter would move as if to wake up but would tighten his grip upon Draco and feed before stilling once more. Severus remained watching them for a time, hoping either boy would soon awaken. He knew very well though that it would be at least another day before they woke up, but hey, a man could hope, right?
Sighing again Snape ran his hand through his godson's silken hair. 'This could quickly become a very dangerous situation if it isn't handled with a lot of care but right now who could be trusted to help?' After what happened to Potter in his class, it was quite obvious that there was something going on with the Headmaster, and if the Headmaster was involved, that meant that members of the order were likely involved too. That left no one Severus could rely on. He had to tread carefully.
Leaving his place next to his godson, Severus went to the bathroom, preparing for the day ahead. Of course he had been ready for some time before being intruded on, but after all the blood which had flowed during the mating, he felt like taking another. He mentally cringed at the thought of having so much as a droplet of blood clinging to his skin or his clothes and knew that for the sake of the boys, he had to completely remove the scent if there was one.
After the bath, Severus went to his office at the back of his class preparing for his first class of the day, third year Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs. His thoughts turned back to the Draco-Potter matter at hand, just as the flames roared to life in his fireplace and the Headmaster's face came to view.
"Good morning," greeted Severus, subtly shifting his body into place in front of the fire so as to block the rest of the room from the Headmaster's view. Severus didn't like the Headmaster peeking around his office every time the old man pleased.
"Ah, good morning to you too, my dear boy." Dumbledore replied, his eyes twinkling as always.
"What can I do for you Albus?" Severus asked. He hadn't thought he would have to face the Headmaster so early. He knew exactly what the man wanted, but he would do anything to buy some time.
"Well, I was informed that Harry and Mister Malfoy had missed their Transfiguration lesson this morning. Minerva was quite displeased to say the least. Since young Malfoy is your godson I had thought you might know what happened to him. I hope he didn't provoke young Harry into another fight?" The Headmaster voice was thick with concern.
"As a matter of fact Albus, I do know what happened to the boys." Severus began and the Headmaster's bright eyes flared with excitement.
"Do you?" He interrupted, relieved "Well, where are they? I know for a fact that they are not in the hospital wing. I already contacted Poppy and she assured me that if the boys had come she would have contacted me immediately" The Headmaster rushed, his expression clearly telling Severus that he should have done so as well.
"They are in my rooms." Severus stated curtly, irritated at the unspoken reproach "Miss Granger and Mister Zabini brought them to my room before their first class."
"Your rooms you say? It must have been quite serious for Miss Granger to bring Harry to you of all people instead of the infirmary. Come to my office now, we will discuss this further." With that the headmaster ended the firecall without for Severus' answer.
- End of flash back -
And so there he was of course after his class walking toward the Headmaster's office. During his lesson, Severus had gone over the story he was going to feed the honourable old coot several times; rearranging the parts that were even slightly unbelievable until he was completely satisfied. He had also taken a potion which strengthen his occlumency shields and created false memories for any overly curious person which could enter his mind without him knowing. Severus could have done so without the potion, and could have easily kept the Headmaster out of his head but the potion could also block all compulsion charms and spells which could mess with the mind. 'One could never be too cautious when they were going against Albus too-many-bloody-names Dumbledore, the Puppet Master'.
Once he was facing the gargoyle he took the time to go through the fake memories one last time, and check his shields for any cracks or weak points. Once satisfied, he stilled himself and glaring at the gargoyle asked it to move aside, his trademark sneer in firmly affixed upon his face. He paused as he reached the Headmaster's door. He was lucky he didn't have to mask his annoyance at the Headmaster for summoning him like some servant. He didn't knock as he entered; he knew the Headmaster had monitoring charms on his door and would know at once when he arrived.
"Good morning Headmaster" he said as he entered the office, his robes swirling dangerously around him.
The Headmaster was sitting in his chair behind his mahogany desk; he had had to buy a new desk after Harry had destroyed the last one in a fit of accidental magic, along with all the tracking devices destined to help him keep an eye on the raven. Unfortunately, such devices were irreplaceable without Harry trusting him enough to let him collect the hair and blood needed to create them. As Severus entered the office, the old man beamed his face the perfect portrait of an old caring man.
"Severus! There you are my boy. I was getting worried when you didn't come right away; thought something horrible had happen to you!" The Headmaster said his voice laced with worry and an undertone of fear for the Potion Master, but Severus wasn't fooled. He knew that it was an act and he didn't plan to get caught in it.
"I'm sorry Headmaster but you called for me on such a short notice. I had classes this morning, and, as much as I hate all those dunderhead, I refuse to neglect my duties." he said snappishly.
"Of course, of course. You must forgive me Severus but I was very worried for the two boys, you know it is my duty to care for them when they are so far from their family, especially Harry who has already been burdened with so much" he said smiling kindly, his eyes twinkling merrily.
"Of course! Potter always gets special treatment. No wonder he is becoming more and more like his father." Severus spat, sneering at the mention of James Potter. How he loathed the man. A life wasn't enough to curse him, but he knew that Harry wasn't him, he knew it since the last battle, and now that they didn't even look-alike anymore, there was nothing he could link them with.
"None of that nonsense" the Headmaster gently chided; pulling the Potion Masters from his thoughts. "You should get over that petty hatred you have for Harry and forget about James. However, we have gotten off track. You said that young Harry and the little Malfoy are in your rooms? What happened to them? Did they fight again? I thought their rivalry ended with the war?" The Headmaster asked his face sharpening as he pierced Severus with his blue gaze.
"There is no need to worry; it did end with the war. Potter saved my godson as well as his mother from the hands of that madman, creating a wizard debt between Potter and the Malfoy family. It has nothing to do with why they are in my quarters though; well not entirely." The Potion Master let his frustrations at the situation drip into his words.
"What do you mean 'not entirely'? What happened?" The Headmaster asked hedging Severus to continue his tale.
"It seems that Potter, being the attention seeker he is, has neglected his health and been missing meals. He ended up fainting in the library this morning. And Draco, being a submissive Veela, sensed another Veela in need of his help. His instincts took over and he rushed to Potter's side. Zabini had enough common sense to follow him and bring them to me as I know a lot about magical beings. At least that is what he told me. He was with Granger and I couldn't be bothered to know how or why she was with them." Severus recounted. Half-truths were the best lies and he knew it.
"I see" the old man said stroking his beard seeming satisfied with the answer. "And now, why are they still in your chambers" he asked and Severus realised he had spied at the entrance of his room since morning. Swallowing the harsh words which threatened to spill from his mouth, Severus turned his head and glared at the portraits of the previous Headmasters.
"This is where it gets complicated. Once they were in my room Draco transformed into his bird form, and it seems that the life debt Draco owns Potter has acted up, and until the boy wakes up and is fully healed, my godson will stay in his bird form ridden of his logical mind and would be a danger to anyone who might get near them."
"Doesn't that include you?" the Headmaster asked raising an eyebrow.
"No, even in his bird form, Draco recognizes me as part of his family and would never hurt me as he knows I would never cause him or those he protect any harm, even if it is that idiot Potter."
"Indeed, it seems that Harry has once again caused you some trouble. But if we mask our presence in order for Malfoy to not sense us, couldn't we get close enough for Poppy to check on them?"
"I would advise against it, even if you were to mask your presence, Draco would feel it immediately if you try to touch Potter, and any attempt to check on them using magic would agitate him."
"I see." The Headmaster said dejected. "Well, you will just have to take care of them until young Harry is better then. I'm really sorry I have to burden you once again with taking care of our young Harry." He said sighing.
"I hope you are. If it wasn't for my godson, I would have thrown that runt out of my quarters without a second thought. If there is nothing else to say," he said clearly asking for a dismissal.
"No, nothing else my boy. I will ask you, however, to report anything you find strange to me as we still don't know much about Harry's inheritance" the Headmaster said a small smile dancing upon his lips.
"Of course"
As the Potion Master turned intending on exiting the office he noticed that Fawkes perch was empty and the bird was nowhere to be seen. Pausing, he turned and asked the Headmaster about it.
"Ah, the burning day is nearing, and Fawkes has gotten quite restless. He has isolated himself in my mansion until his rebirth" was the answer he got.
Nodding he exited the office walking briskly towards his chambers. Once he was inside and shielded from the spying portraits and ghosts and the nosy students he let out his breath in a whooshing sight collapsing in his favourite chair. It had gone relatively well considering everything; the Headmaster hadn't even tried to use legilimency on him. 'No doubt he believed that since I hated the boy so much, I wouldn't help him' Severus thought. Sighing, Severus stood up and entered the room he had move the boys in this morning and looked at them. What now? What was he going to do?

Meanwhile, at Grimmauld Place, Sirius Black was getting tired of being cooped in his childhood home, which he hated so much. The war was over and even though he had asked for the guardianship of Harry, the Headmaster had refused, saying he was still unstable from all his years in Azkaban. Just thinking about it made him furious. 'Did he really think that he'd hurt his own godson?'
"What had you so angry Sirius" Remus Lupin asked from the doorway. Remus had started living with Sirius after the war, and they started a romantic relationship as both had feelings for each other since their Hogwarts' years.
"I can't take it anymore Remus! The old man has confined me to this house and no matter how many letters I send Harry, he never answers them," the man whispered, his voice strained. Leaving the doorway, Remus moved closer to his lover, placing a comforting hand upon his shoulder.
"Maybe he didn't get them?" he suggested soothingly. "Next week-end, how about we try to catch him at Hogsmeade? In your dog form it will be easy enough to get there without being noticed, and it is not like Dumbledore can forbid us to do so right? He just said he didn't think you were ready, but if you think you might suffocate here I don't see why you should stay here" he said stroking the ex-convict's hair.
"That sound like a wonderful plan" the man said immediately cheering up, his earlier depression completely forgotten. Sometimes it got Remus worried that the changed his moods so fast and he knew it was one among the numerous side effects from his stay in Azkaban but Remus did everything he could to help him heal.
"I'm so looking forward to it" the dog animagus said bouncing as he exited the room.
