I wanted to scream, but it wouldn't come out. I opened my mouth to scream, and in my mind I was screaming, but I couldn't hear myself. It was too late. Everything that I imagined for this girl was all taken away, instantly. I covered my face with my arms, not wanting to see it. Not wanting to see her crushed, mangled body. Was Rube wrong? He was never wrong. But here I was, about to rip a girl's soul from her dead, mangled corpse, oh God...
"George!"
Mason breathlessly exclaimed as he ran beside me, ripping at my arm.
"Go away."
I mumbled, shrugging him off. I just wanted to disappear. I felt like a shithead for being jealous of this girl, when she was just...gone. Why did I expect today to be any different? Fuck today.
"No, look."
Mason ripped my hands from my face and forced me to look at the scene. The truck that had hurdled to Bella at lightning speed had, apparently, stopped right before hitting her. She was – She was fine? I looked quickly at Mason before turning back to the scene.
"No, I saw...I saw the truck coming toward her!"
I exclaimed as I looked back at him, dumbfounded.
"There's no possible way..."
"It was the vampires."
Mason said quickly, his voice hushed."
"Come again?"
I screamed, probably a little too loudly. My heart was pounding against my chest.
"Are you telling me that, that what? They flew down and grabbed her out of the way?"
"No."
He replied simply. I stared at him, mouth agape, waiting for his answer...well, impatiently waiting.
"Then – what – the – fuck – are – you – saying?"
I asked as I smacked him in the arm.
"OW!"
He let out a laugh and rubbed his arm.
"They're impossibly fast, Georgie. I barely saw him myself. I'm not even sure..."
He shrugged.
"I dunno. He came out of nowhere..."
He motioned around the parking lot.
"And somehow he stopped that truck. He pushed it. Dented the truck right on the side. She's fine. I promise. She's okay."
I looked around, sort of pissed off that I missed the whole thing. I waited so long for this?
"Where is he now?"
I kept looking around, hoping to spot him. Would he have black hair? Red eyes? Pale skin? Would he be wearing a cape?
"I don't know."
Mason shrugged.
"You ready to go now?"
He sounded nervous, like he just wanted to get out of there.
"Fuck that! I'm not going anywhere until we meet one or more of these - "
I made sure to lower my voice.
"Vampires. Let's go."
I dragged his arm as we stomped around the parking lot. By now, mostly everyone had cleared out – probably concerned about Bella. Her closest friends likely even followed her to the hospital. If he was around, we'd find him. Maybe. I hope.
"Oh, hello lovely."
Mason smiled at a gorgeous blonde who had just gotten into one of the cars. We really didn't have time for this.
"Mason, shut up. Let's go."
I hissed as I tried to drag him away, but he was persistent. He walked toward the girl and her friends, who were all staring at us.
"You're a gorgeous little dove, you know that?"
He hiccuped as he stared at her and gave her a drunk, sloppy grin. I rolled my eyes as I turned away. We really didn't have time for this. To my surprise, she carefully and slowly got out of the car and headed over to us. She smiled politely, but there was something uneasy about her smile.
"You smell like death."
She said calmly as she stared at him, then gave me a knowing look. I can honestly say that I have never seen someone so beautiful. She was – perfect. Ethereal. I found myself touching my hair trying to fix it, I felt out of place. Like I didn't deserve to be in her presence. Mason, on the other hand...
"All in a day's work, lovie. So uh, what's your name?"
She now kept her eyes on me.
"You're reapers, aren't you?"
A small, squirrely girl from the back of the car exclaimed as she jumped out and skipped over to us.
"OH, I'm so excited! I've never met one in person! I'm Alice...and this is Rosalie..."
She gestured to the blonde.
"And that's Emmett, and Jasper. So pleased to meet you!"
She pulled us both into a quick hug. I wanted to hate her. Instead, I kind of liked her.
"So you're the..the um.."
I wanted to slap myself. O f course they were the vampires. They were flawless, all of them. They looked nothing like the acne ridden teenagers that littered the parking lot. There was nothing wrong with any of them. Alice let out a small giggle and nodded.
"So, did you know we were coming?"
I asked. The four exchanged glances.
"I had a vision."
Alice said after awhile as she turned back to face me.
"We knew something big was going to happen and we knew you would come. But we didn't know why."
The two men in the group, Emmett and – Jason? Jasper...seemed curious about us. Alice was downright friendly and almost seemed happy we were there. But the blonde, Rosalie, was glaring at the both of us. It was clear that she didn't want us there.
"This is horrible. This isn't going to end well for us. You know that, Alice."
She hissed under her breath as she turned her gaze away from us. Alice merely shook her head.
"And where is he?"
"You know where he is, Rose."
One of the guys – Emmett, I think, spoke up and nodded to the car.
"And it's where we should be. Come on."
She turned back to glare at us. It was enough to make me want to crawl out of my own skin, but Mason didn't seem to take the hint.
"Aw, what's wrong lovie?"
She hissed at him, then turned to look at me.
"Can I kill him? Is he your mate?"
I backed off, hands held up in the air.
"NO! God, NO! No. Ew! No."
I shrugged as I saw Mason turn to face me with fear in his eyes. Finally, he was getting the hint!
"I mean, he's already dead."
He sighed with relief.
"But, yeah."
I shrugged again.
"Go ahead."
She smirked as she walked toward him, but she stopped as he hid behind me.
"Even we know we can't kill death."
She said quietly, and there was an odd sort of sadness in her voice. Her eyes pierced through me as she glared at him, then got back into the car with the others. I watched as they drove off and couldn't help but smile as Alice waved enthusiastically from the back seat.
"Alright, so...that's it then, we're done for the day. Good job, Georgie."
Mason patted me on the back. I wasn't done though, not just yet.
"Do you know where the hospital is?"
I asked innocently, as I hurried my way out of the parking lot, ignoring his protests. This was the most interesting thing to happen to me as a reaper and, goddamnit, I was going to make the most of it.
