Summary:

After a fight with Inuyasha, Kagome wonders if she really is as useless as Inuyasha says.

~~OO~~II~~OO~~

Kagome ran her fingers through her thick raven-colored hair, her blue eyes dull with concealed pain as she did so. She sat on the roots of the Goshinboku in her time, the modern time. Maybe even the place she was supposed to be in.

"You don't even belong in this time," Inuyasha had snarled at her. The pain that had hit her at his words returned at full force and Kagome bit her lip to fight the tears. "Even if you did, you're useless in battle! At least Kikyo can shoot an arrow! You can't even do that!"

Kagome gave a shaky sigh, resting her chin on her knees and closing her eyes. Maybe he was right, she thought, maybe she really didn't belong in the Feudal Era. She'd told herself he needed her for more than just Jewel hunting, but he didn't. All he had to do was find Kikyo and she'd agree.

Kagome shook her head, a flash of pure anger flashing through her mind. It was always Kikyo. Kikyo this, Kikyo that. Always about how much better Kikyo was.

And it certainly didn't help that her family had gone on a month long cruise for the summer. Gone off on a cruise! the note had read. Sorry we missed you! There wasn't even a "love you" or "here's some money for food". Just a "we left, see you some day" note.

She was sure that if Sango had been there, she would've gone back to rage about the half-demon with her. But everyone, even Shippo, had gone back to Sango's village, leaving her alone with Inuyasha.

Kagome scowled. "I'd probably be more use to that jerk if I was being eaten by a demon." But that wasn't even an option. He'd come flying to the rescue onto to yell at her moments later.

Kagome felt the pain fill her heart again, threatening to overwhelm her. No matter how many times she saved his life, no matter how many times she fixed his wounds, it didn't matter. He could care less.

No, Kagome told herself fiercely. She wasn't useless. It didn't matter what her half-demon friend said, she wasn't useless. She knew things that helped her friends. She'd saved his life with just a first aid kit! No, she repeated, she wasn't useless. She wasn't a burden.

"Kagome."

The gruff voice saying her name caught Kagome's attention and she lifted her head, immediately wiping the tears away. "Inuyasha," she mumbled in response. "What do you want?"

Said half-demon crouched beside her, his ears pinned against his head. He still had smudges of dirt in the silver strands of his hair from being sat into a crater. His golden eyes glowed with a nervous glint, and he averted his eyes to look at the ground, just like a dog would when dealing with the top dog of the pack. "Stop your crying," he muttered. "It's annoying."

Kagome's temper flared immediately and she snapped, glowering at him, "You're the reason for it, jerk! If you're going to be mean, get lost. I don't want to see you anyways!"

Inuyasha winced, biting back a whine. He stood up, spinning around and rocking back onto his heels, ears pinned as he muttered, "Damn it, wench." He paused, then finally gritted out, "I'm sorry, alright? Sango's threatening to kill me unless you come back, so can we go back now?"

Kagome sighed. "Fine," she groaned.

As she stood, she contemplated a final thought, trailing after him towards the well.

No matter how much they fought, she'd always forgive him. That's what you did when you loved someone…wasn't it?
