Chapter 6
Tsuna had showered, unpacked his things, and gone around his huge room and bathroom for over ten times already. He had tried to take a small nap but the voice that sounded like Yamamoto had haunted him into wakefulness every time he was about to drift off. He even went out of his room to see who yelled, but he was already too late and whoever it was had already gone.
Unable to sit still, and his room being too big to make him feel at home, the brunet decided to go to the castle grounds and take a look at Yamamoto's grave. He had a vague memory of Reborn talking to him about it during one of his darker days.
The young Vongola's heart ached and he bit his lip as he tried to contain the pain he had been feeling for in the past weeks. As he thought, getting out of his depression had not been easy and holding back his grief had only been possible because he was distracted by the new things in his life.
"Yamamoto…" The brunet thought as he pushed open the door to his room and made it outside.
The halls of the grand Vongola castle were like a maze to the small town Japanese. He wasn't used to grand mansions like these and with every step, the teen found himself wishing for the small sushi restaurant he had grown up in.
Tsuna turned right and paused, eyes wide when he saw several ten-foot portraits decorating this hallway.
"Wow…" He breathed out in surprise. The first portrait was empty, just a smooth mahogany against the marble walls and an engraved "X" on the lower frame. The young boss kept walking and in the next portrait a kind-looking, smiling man with a scepter on his hand looked down gently at him. The Roman numeral "IX" was engraved on the frame.
The brunet continued to walk down the hallways, counting down the number of single person portraits. Some were smiling in them, a few glaring, the only picture of a female seemed to be smirking proudly, and there was even one where a guy was holding up a fork, to the brunet's confusion.
Tsuna stopped at the last portrait, covered partly by a shadow but was the most well maintained out of all the portraits. An impressive looking blonde, that seemed only slightly older than him, looked down into Tsuna's eyes with intuitive, glowing orange eyes.
The brunet traced the "I" on the lower frame, remembering the first conversation he had with Reborn. His father was a direct descendant of the first boss of the Vongola family. Could this be him?
"But he's so young." Tsuna whispered to himself.
"Only a few years older than us." The brunet abruptly turned, eyes wide when he met the usual annoyed face of Gokudera Hayato.
"Gokudera-kun!"
The Italian sighed, "You really need to learn how to speak Italian soon. We're not in Japan anymore."
"Ah, but learning a new language won't be that easy…" Tsuna scratched at his cheek sheepishly.
Gokudera smirked, "Which is why Reborn-san will be your official home tutor."
"Is he that good?" The brunet tried to think of Reborn, the hitman, tutoring or teaching anyone anything.
"Oh, you have no idea." The older teen said, "He even got that stupid Dino to be a good boss." He said proudly.
"Who?"
Gokudera sighed, huffing slightly, "Nothing." The put out tone made the brunet sweat drop slightly. The Italian turned his head to the side and something seemed to have caught his eye. "Tenth, come with me for a second. I have something to show you."
Tenth? Tsuna thought, Oh, he must mean me. He remembered the current Vongola head was the 'ninth', so the 'tenth' was most probably him. "Y-Yes." Not wanting to get lost, he followed the other quickly. Gokudera turned to the next hallway on the right and the brunet stared at the next set of portraits that assaulted his sight. This time, instead of being alone, all the people of the other photos were sitting on a throne-like chair, surrounded by six other people.
"The Vongola bosses and their guardians." Gokudera said proudly. He pointed to another large empty portrait, "And this is where your portrait, with the rest of your guardians, will be."
"My guardians-"
"You'll meet them in a few hours." The Italian assured and then he seemed to hesitate before he said, "There's something else, follow me."
Tsuna looked at the other curiously but said nothing as he followed him to another hallway.
It was like the rest of the hallways, except aside from the large windows there was also a door that led to the Vongola grounds. There was also a large portrait on the walls that had no windows. Curiosity heightened, the brunet followed Gokudera and stopped in front of it.
Tsuna stared.
It was the First Vongola boss, except he was laughing slightly as he was surrounded by a rowdy-looking bunch of people. Out of all of the portraits this was probably the least formal one the brunet had ever seen.
There was a priest who seemed to be preaching an annoyed looking white-blonde haired man wearing a sort of detective coat. A man with a strange hairstyle coupled with bangs seemed to be eying the two with amusement. He looked familiar but Tsuna couldn't pinpoint why. A green-haired teen, probably the youngest of them all, who had an uncanny resemblance to Lambo, was being hit on the head by a red-head man who managed to look dignified and annoyed at the same time. The brunet couldn't help but think that the red-head man with tanned skin resembled the teen standing next to him.
Brown eyes moved on to the last two figures of the portrait and the Vongola froze. A light skinned man, wearing old style Japanese clothing, with gentle blue eyes was leaning over the throne chair, seeming to be speaking with a smile as the First Vongola boss laughed lightly.
Tsuna opened his mouth and closed it, eyes glued to the man who looked so much like-
"His name is Asari Ugetsu, the Vongola First's rain guardian." Gokudera spoke into the silence. "He had an unparalleled love for music and his most precious item was his flute. But when he heard that the Vongola Primo was in danger, he sold his flute and used the money to travel to Italy to help him."
The brunet reached out a hand, barely stretching enough to trace the familiar face.
"The rain guardian is the person who eases the tension within the family. He washes away the enemy and all troubles like the rain." The Italian continued, he looked sideways at the brunet, "Yamamoto Takeshi's official name is UA unit number 08." Gokudera anticipated the stiffening of the other at the mention of the Vongola's strongest weapon. "UA mean Ugetsu Asari, he was modeled after the Primo's favorite guardian-"
"Stop." Tsuna suddenly said in a hard tone that made Gokudera shut his mouth. "Why are you telling me this?"
The Italian let out a breath, his hands behind his back as he faced Tsuna, "It's the boss' job to know everything that goes on in the Family. I am merely doing my job of informing you about your old protector since you have an unacceptably limited knowledge on the Vongola's greatest creation-"
The punch Gokudera received to the face was pathetically weak but not unexpected.
The Italian straightened himself and put on a mask of calm as the brunet trembled, brown eyes burning.
"Yamamoto's not a creation." Tsuna said, staring at the floor, his shoulders shaking, "He's the best person I-"
"Wrong." Gokudera said, "It is not a person-"
"Shut up!" Tsuna ordered and the guardian closed his mouth respectfully. The Vongola rubbed at his eyes, trying not to let the tears spill, "Don't talk about him like that. You don't know him! You barely met him-"
Gokduera remained silent and stoic.
"Leave." The brunet said in a soft tone, "Go!"
"Understood." Gokudera said unapologetically as he turned and left, leaving his grieving boss by himself.
The smaller teen slumped against the wall, eyes shadowed as he looked outside in a dazed-like manner. Memories flashed before his eyes, Yamamoto looking at him with a blank and uncaring expression. He shivered but not in coldness.
But then a more powerful memory resurfaced, shadowing all the other ones, a smiling and dying Yamamoto in his arms.
No one made me love you, Tsuna. That was my own choice.
The box felt heavy in his pocket and the brunet tried to fight off the unbearable pain in his chest. He straightened and tried to walk towards the door that led to the grounds. Through a lot of fumbling he finally managed to open it and the breeze to his face made him calm down.
There was an old oak tree that stood out in the middle amongst the neatly lined trees to the side. A wooden bench was underneath the cool shade, inviting the brunet to draw closer. But as he did so, he noticed a slab of marble protruding out of the grass and blue irises by the oak's roots.
Brown eyes widened when Tsuna was near enough to read the engraving on the marble. In familiar Japanese characters, Yamamoto Takeshi's name was neatly spelled out on the Italian-style grave marker.
The young boss barely made it to the bench before he was kneeling on the grass, hands steadying his shaking form on the cold, cold stone.
"Why did you do that Gokudera-shi?" A certain curly-haired teen leaned by the ninth and his guardians' portraits as the silver-head Italian turned left after the boss' dismissal. "You knew he'd punch you, but you kept talking about the UA unit anyway. I didn't think you'd be so careless."
"None of your business, stupid cow." Gokudera said as he continued walking, the other teen followed him.
"Could it be because the boss doesn't know about him?" Lambo asked, "Do you actually feel guilty for not telling the boss about him?"
Gokudera said nothing as Lambo continued to persist. "I don't understand why you and Reborn just won't tell the new boss already. I mean it's not like UA unit number 08 came back to life or some-" The younger guardian was cut off when the silver-haired teen grabbed him by the front of his shirt.
"Listen, you stupid cow, how would you feel if someone you loved died in front of you?" Gokudera said harshly, "How would you feel, if barely two weeks after that, your whole world suddenly gets turned upside down and you're brought to an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar faces as you struggle with your grief?"
"I-"
The older guardian threw the other to the floor with a harsh glare, "Then tell me, how would you feel when suddenly amongst this crowd of unfamiliar people you see a person who looks exactly like the one you love who just died?"
Lambo gulped as Gokudera continued his tirade, "You'd feel confused and then hopeful but in the end you'd get your heart crushed because no matter how much you wish for it the person you love is dead! And the person who looks like him is nothing but a stupid, painful reminder of what you have lost and no matter how you want it to be, he can't be him. Do you get that?"
"I-I guess."
"Good." Gokudera said exhaling roughly, "Now go back to your room and do something useful, I have work to do."
"G-Good luck." Lambo said as he hastily stood up when the other left. He let out a sigh of relief as he ran a hand through his curls, "Geez, Gokudera-shi should really stop watching daytime tragedies. He gets really dramatic when he gets going." He muttered to himself as he made his way to his room.
"You're doing it wrong." A voice made Tsuna look up from what he was doing. Suddenly stumbling into Yamamoto's grave unprepared made him think of using the blue irises to make flower crowns instead like the way Yamamoto used to when they were kids. However the brunet may have underestimated the length of time and overestimated his remembrance, if any of the drooping flowers were an indication.
"Uhm," Tsuna held up a pathetic version of a flower crown and looked at the person, squinting slight in the sunlight. It was a girl wearing a female-styled tuxedo with an office skirt. She was pale and had an eye patch on, her hair was short and styled familiarly. It reminded the brunet of the teen he met earlier.
"Here." She extended her hand and unable to think of what else to do the brunet gave her the flowers. The teen kneeled next to him and began expertly weaving the stems of the flowers together. Within several seconds she was finished. She gave it to the brunet, "All done."
"Thank you." Tsuna said and then he turned to Yamamoto's grave and hung it on top of the marble.
"A friend of yours?"
Brown eyes snapped to the other and Tsuna hesitated before answering, "Something like that. He was my family."
"Your mom and dad?"
"They died when I was young."
"Oh, I'm sorry." The girl said immediately and Tsuna just gave her a small smile.
"It was a long time ago, besides, Yamamoto took me in." He gestured to the grave.
"Yamamoto? Is that what's written?" The teen asked, squinting on the Japanese characters written.
"Yeah, see? Yamamoto Takeshi." Tsuna traced the characters as he said them. "You're not Japanese?"
The girl shook her head. "I can speak the language but I'm a little behind on reading kanji." Then she said wistfully, "So his name is Takeshi. That's a common Japanese name isn't it?"
"Yeah, a bit traditional but I thought it suited him." Tsuna said and the girl nodded and she said nothing more on the subject. The young boss gave her a sideways glance, "I'm sorry, I haven't introduced myself, my name is Sawada Tsunayoshi."
The girl tilted her head, "I know."
Tsuna was surprised. "You do?"
She nodded. "I'm Dokuro Chrome and I've come to get you, boss."
"So you've come, Dame-Tsuna." Reborn said, leaning against the wall coolly with his usual smirk. Tsuna had entered the hall with Chrome who led the way.
The brunet frowned, "You're really going to start calling me that?"
"Occasionally." The hitman said and then his obsidian eyes trailed at the dirt covered hands. "I see you found his grave."
The young boss self-consciously hid his hands behind his back, "I did, it's nice but I still preferred it if he was buried with his mom in Japan."
Reborn raised an eyebrow at the other as Chrome observed in the sidelines, "He's Vongola's property."
Tsuna turned to the other with a glare, "He's no one's property."
His tutor sighed, "I see you're still tired from the travel. I told you to rest especially since we're going to be doing a lot of things from now on."
"What sort of things?"
"Training of course." Reborn said as he walked and gestured for the brunet to sit down on a chair. He took out some files, reading through them. "Not to mention that you need a lot of tutelage since, from what I see in my file, you were far from a good student." Tsuna winced, "Don't complain, I'm the one who'll be suffering from tutoring you. Also, as the new and only Vongola heir you have to attend several meetings with allies and other families."
"Wait!" Tsuna said brown eyes wide, "Why do I have to meet other mafia?"
"Because you're going to be next Vongola boss, of course."
"But I didn't agree to that! I only came to Italy because-" An image of a still Yamamoto in his arms flashed in his mind and his eyes shadowed, "I wanted to find the people who killed Yamamoto and-"
"-And how do you expect to do that?" Reborn said as he put the papers down, "Without money or power, how do you expect to rival Xanxus and his Varia?"
"I-"
"There's no doubt that because of the blood in your veins, you will meet Xanxus again. He will come and he will kill you but that is only a fact if you refuse to become the next boss of this family." The Italian hitman said, "If you refuse to go with our plans then we'll deport you back to Japan and the next time Xanxus comes after you, who will be harmed? Yamamoto Tsuyoshi? And when he's dead, then you, who has no experience in fighting whatsoever, will die too. And once that happens, Xanxus will take control of the family and in extension of the world. You'll die a pathetic death and in effect doom the whole planet."
Tsuna gulped as Reborn approached him with serious eyes, "And I know you're stupid, no-good, and useless but definitely not heartless. You must be able to see that becoming the boss of this family is the only way to extract your revenge, protect the last family you have, and do something useful with yourself."
The brunet remained silent as he looked at the floor. Reborn looked satisfied, seeing that the other probably won't protest anymore he proceeded to outline the plan.
"Now, training takes top priority of course. Being the only Vongola heir means a lot of assassination attempts from both the mafia and the anti-mafia." Reborn said as the brunet gulped, "Your physical records are the most pathetic I've seen, so I guess we have to work on that first. But it would also be good if we get your started on using flames and rings as early as possible."
"Flames?"
"Festered Limit-breaker of Amalgamated and Modulated Extrasensory Senses." Reborn explained, "Or flames for short." He added, "Do you remember the fight with Varia?"
The brunet stiffened, hands clenching at the remembrance of that day, "Y-Yeah."
"Did you notice anything different from Yamamoto than the usual?" Reborn went on, Chrome shot the other the look, wondering if bringing up a recently dead person would be alright.
"He was incredibly fast…" Tsuna said hesitantly, his heart pounded in his ribs as memories of that day threatened to overtake him. He closed his eyes, fighting them off, "His eyes were glowing blue and- and-"
"That's enough." A hand on his shoulder and a kind voice made Tsuna looked up into Chrome's gentle expression. "Reborn-san has gotten what he needed." Tsuna turned to Reborn who nodded.
"I didn't expect that you were able to see his eyes turn blue but yes, those two things were caused by flames. Everyone has flames inside of them but they're invisible to most so it's a surprise that you were able to get a glimpse of Yamamoto's. Here." He threw a small object towards Tsuna who barely caught it with clumsy fingers. "Tell me what that is."
Tsuna opened his hands and stared, "It's a ring." He said turning the silver ring with an orange gem over his palm.
"Not just an ordinary ring, it's a conduit that helps a person control their flames. Those who are aware of using their flames are the only ones who can see them. Flames are like an aura of energy around a person's body, the Vongola has been researching on it for years. Based on that research we have created vast improvements on our technology and weaponry." Reborn explained. "The Varia uses it as well."
"I don't… understand." Tsuna said looking at the ring in concentration. "This ring, is a weapon? And what do you mean a person's aura? How can you turn that into a weapon?"
"It's like telekinesis. You've seen them in television shows? People who can push things with their minds?" Chrome helpfully supplied.
Tsuna nodded.
"Flames are like that, a person's mental force, a person's will." She said, "It's your resolve with a physical appearance of a flame. With it fused with a weapon or a conduit, it can become an object used to win fights and wars. This ring is a key, the focal point where you focus your flames. It was designed to absorb the flames into one spot so when you touch an object, like a sword, your flames spread to that weapon instead of your whole body. In effect, the sword becomes a stronger and faster weapon. Even a toy sword can cut a cement when doused with a person's flames."
The brunet almost dropped the ring in surprise, "What? But- That's impossible."
"Not really, you should be more open-minded to these things, Tsunayoshi." Reborn adjusted the ring on his finger. "We have various research instruments and data to back us up on this claim. Although flames are ultimately unknown in your world, a few of us knows about it in this world. Verde will explain to you, once your weapon is completed."
"M-My weapon?"
"Now stay silent and focus on my hand." Reborn closed his eyes for a few seconds and took a deep breath and clenched his hand into a fist. The yellow gem of his ring glinted and the brunet blink as Reborn asked, "Can you see it?"
Tsuna's eyes squinted and he swore he could see something yellow and mist-like dancing on top of the gem. "H-Huh? I think so." He looked at Reborn's eyes, "Your eyes are slightly yellow though."
Reborn blinked and turned to Chrome, "Chrome?"
The teen shook her head, "It's not yellow in the slightest." She confirmed.
"Hm," Reborn put down his hand, "For some odd reason, it seems your ability to see flames is being muted or held back somehow. You can see hints of it in the person's eyes while other's can't. It's proof of how strong your flames should be but-" He turned to Tsuna, "Light up the ring."
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me, light up the ring I gave you."
"Wha-? But how do I do that?" Tsuna asked in confusion, "Do I need a lighter or- or a match or something?"
"All you need is resolve." Chrome said patiently, "Think of the reason why you're fighting, who you're fighting for, and who you want to protect."
The brunet looked at her uncertainly but nodded and closed his eyes as he held his ring up. He concentrated and after several seconds, he opened one eye and asked, "Well?"
Chrome shook her head and Reborn sighed. Tsuna fell silly and dejected as he put down his hand.
"Well, no one ever gets it in the first try but, we'll keep going. One more time Tsuna and close your eyes again. Listen to what I have to say." Reborn said and the brunet did so with hesitation. "Imagine a flame coming out that ring, picture it, it's warm but not too hot that it will burn you. It's a flame that represents everything important to you, your parents, Tsuyoshi, and Takeshi."
Tsuna flinched at the last one, knuckles going white. There was a small spark and Chrome and Reborn's eyes widened.
Reborn continued. "With this flame you can protect anyone important to you, you can defeat Xanxus, and bring peace to Yamamoto Takeshi's soul."
Another spark.
"You have to think, Tsuna. Imagine protecting everyone with you flame, imagine finding Xanxus and using that flame to defeat him." With a small inhalation, the hitman added, with uncertainty of the outcome, "Imagine being able to save Yamamoto with that flame."
Tsuna's face went pale white and for a second, nothing happened.
But then suddenly a large flame erupted from the ring as Chrome and Reborn jumped back in surprise. The ring cracked and suddenly the flame went out before the ring broke in two and fell to the ground.
Tsuna snapped his eyes open, looking at Chrome and Reborn before looking at the floor, "H-Huh?"
"T-That was-" Chrome started uncertainly. Reborn got over his surprise and smirked.
"That was an impressive display. With that amount of flames, I'm surprised that you aren't able to see them from the start." The hitman walked forward, "Something is definitely suppressing your power. We'll have to find out what. And if we do, well Xanxus should definitely be frightened." Reborn turned to Chrome and snapped her out of her surprise, "Chrome, call the others."
"Y-Yes." She said and she gave Tsuna one last glance before leaving.
"Others?"
Reborn smirked as he bent down and picked up the ring. "Sawada Tsunayoshi, Vongola Decimo, it's time for you to meet your guardians."
Author's note: Sorry about the whole explanation thing, I mean, since it's an AU it's like everything's back to zero and I thought it would seem incomplete without my version of the whole flame thing. But it'll be worth it, trust me.
Also, have you guys figured out where this is going yet? I mean the last chapter was a clue and with what Gokudera said, I'm sure you know what I'm planning right?
In a different note, my mom's birthday just passed. I don't know if you should say 'happy birthday' but I hope she's okay wherever she is right now. I miss you, ma.
Depressing things aside, thank you for all of your support and reviews! It's what keeps me writing! So, I wish everyone the best day! The next chapter (until chapter ten) is already done and the amount of reviews I get will be what makes me update faster. I'm not bribing you or anything XD
