Chapter 6

Kagome hated him. There was nothing good about this Commissioner. He was arrogant, selfish, and absolutely handsome. She groaned into the pillow more. After dinner, she had explained to Sango that she would retire for the night once more.

The only thing that Kagome didn't plan out was her not being tired. That damned man was still on her mind. Finding Shippo, and becoming that man's mistress haunted and teased her at the same time.

She grumbled a curse under her breath before she pulled the covers back and swung her legs out of the bed.

She lit a candle as she dressed quietly in a dark burgundy dress. It was an older style. Fluffy around the bottom with a low waist band. The bodice was tight but protected her breasts from view. She pulled her hair behind her with a butterfly clip and stepped out into the hall.

She almost jumped when Shiyo met her. "I-I heard you moving around," the head servant got out as she tried to regain her heart beat.

"Yes, have them pull the carriage around," Kagome ordered. Shiyo cast her an appalled look.

"Whatever for, Lady?" Shiyo asked, whispering harshly. Kagome knew it was social suicide to go out this late unattended. Surely, people would believe she was going to meet with some married duke or something. No, she wanted to go back to that club and spy on the man Sesshoumaru had been talking to. Or see if she sees anything suspicious. Maybe she can eavesdrop on something.

It was driving her crazy. Two whole days had passed and the Commissioner had yet to inform her or the parents what he had found. It had been slow and filled with worry in this house. Every conversation was awkward. There was no happiness to be found.

Shiyo and Akane dragged themselves around the house lifelessly. Akane had stopped cooking and spent most of her time obsessively cleaning. Shiyo spent most of his time hidden or at Kagome's side.

"Please, Shiyo," she ordered, not wanting to cause a scene or wake anyone else up.

Shiyo cleared his throat, "I will fetch the carriage and assist you. I can protect you." He added the last comment when she tossed him a confused look. Kagome also didn't argue when he left with a look of determination.

She followed him, blowing the candle out so no one would see the light under the door. Kagome snuck down the stairs as quietly as possible. Then out the front door to catch Shiyo connected the last horse to the carriage.

"Good job, Shiyo," She commented as she stepped into the coach while adjusting her black wrap.

She gasped when Shiyo whipped the horses into a canter. "Where are we going?" He called out when they left the house and he started towards the city.

"Go across the bridge, not into the city. I will guide you from there," she explained, before leaning back into the cushion of the couch. She would figure this case out. She trusted Shiyo with her life and knew he would do well to protect her.

Her thoughts went to Shippo. She wondered if he had woken up and asked for his parents. She wondered if he was scared and crying. No, Shippo wasn't one to show his fear. He may be crying, but he hated to show his fear. He wanted to be the proudest boy out there.

The sound of stone echoed in the carriage. They were on the bridge.

Kagome peered out the window. She shivered when she instantly recognized the area. Memories of what had happened in the dark alley made her fear double.

"There will be a small town hours pub, no name," Kagome explained. She missed the shocked expression in Shiyo's eyes. "Park across and we'll wait it out," she added.

Shiyo first a nod of his own but wanted to really turn this carriage around. This pub was known for being a demon hang out. This was the only place in the city where demons could go. How the hell had Kagome, his innocent lady, learn about this place?

The carriage paused in front of the pub. The horses coughed in exhaustion and Kagome leaned out the window in the dark night. She could hear the familiar chants and laughs of the drunkards.

She waited and waited. She wanted to see the man Sesshoumaru had been talking to, but she'd barely gotten a glimpse of him. She remembered him having dark hair and these weird emerald-like eyes, but that was it. He even reminded her of a toad with those beady little green eyes. He was overweight and couldn't wear a poker face if his life had depended on it.

Yet, as the hour slowly passed, he never came out. "Lady Higurashi, perhaps I should go in and fetch him," Shiyo asked, wanting to get this innocent woman out of here as fast as possible. Her reputation would be soiled if anyone caught even a glimpse of her.

"Heavens no, Shiyo! I would never let you go into such a pig pen!" She exclaimed instantly. She was shocked when he gave a laugh.

He tied the reins to the nearest light post, jumping out into the street. "What'd he look like?" He asked.

Kagome reluctantly gave him a description of the man she'd gotten a glimpse of. Still, she worried when she watched Shiyo go in.

She would give him ten minutes, and then she would figure something out. If he didn't come out, she would have to alert the police.

No, that wouldn't do. Her reputation would still be tarnished if the police knew she'd been here.

She grumbled to herself when she realized this had all probably been a bad plan. She was all alone in a carriage with her head servant collecting a suspect from inside.

Quietly, she opened the door to the carriage. It hadn't been ten minutes, but she was too worried to leave him alone. She hoped that he would do the same if she was in there.

Her shoes clicked across the street as she silently opened the door. She tried to step in without being noticed, but it was impossible.

All at once, they turned to her as if she had turned into a buffet table. She'd never seen such hungry eyes. The cheers quieted and before she knew it, hands were all over her. "Heya, come sit on my lap, miss, I'll treat you to a nice surprise."

She gasped and pushed him off. Another pair of arms wrapped around her, and she felt someone tug her hair loose.

It fanned out over her back, chest and shoulders. Her sleeve slipped down passed her shoulders. "This one isn't as fun as the other whores Mistress Yura sends in," one mumbled to a friend.

She ducked into the chest of whoever had wrapped her up. Shakily, she tried not to cry as she demanded an apology. "You pigs! I have never been so ashamed of this city!" She shouted, pushing off whoever was holding her and turning to stare at the men who had manhandled her.

"You men should be ashamed of yourselves!" She barked.

They all began to laugh hysterically. "Maybe she's a punisher. She plays innocent but wants control, I've heard of those ladies," one man whispered in thought.

A hand grabbed her shoulders roughly. When she fought, another hand grabbed her wrist and she was suddenly being pulled back out towards the door. She kicked and threw punches, but they wouldn't let her go.

"Release me!" She exclaimed when they made it outside.

A familiar laugh sent her heart into her stomach, and her stomach into her throat. "You have got to be the dumbest woman I've ever met," Sesshoumaru growled out.

Kagome blinked up at him in shock. How could he be in such an establishment? Shiyo stood behind him, and that wide-eyed toad beside the Commissioner. "I beg your pardon; I wouldn't have needed to do this if you would have kept me informed!"

"It's my fault that you instructed to come to this pub then?" His molten eyes bore into her and she suddenly felt foolish.

Maybe it was a bit foolish to do what she did, but she wanted Shippo back. She couldn't live with herself if something happened to the boy.

Sesshoumaru stared at her, trying to contain his own lust. It hadn't been easy to resist a hurt animal in a lion's den. Everyone had wanted a piece of her.

Now he stared at her. Her hair tousled around her face. He'd never seen it down before and it was like a devilish tease around the innocent face. The sleeve of her dress was hanging and it was more of a tease then the last night he'd saved her. This time he knew what was behind the dress, and found it even sexier to have it covered by just a thin strap.

"I just want him back safely," She whispered, "and you weren't telling us anything."

There was such a weakness in her sapphire eyes that Sesshoumaru didn't know how to react. She looked so vulnerable with her arms wrapped around herself as if she needed to comfort herself. Her lips trembled and her eyes began to water.

"Shiyo, get the carriage," he then turned towards Jaken. At one point in his life, Jaken had been a loyal servant. Now he was an underground agent that made Sesshoumaru's life a lot easier. "Go back to work," he ordered.

Both of them went to work and Sesshoumaru was left with the pouting woman. "Cease your crying," he ordered staring at Kagome. "Women can't do work like this. They are vulnerable to the beastly desires of men."

"Have you talked to him, did he give you any leads?" Kagome demanded. "Because I've done my own research!" She shouted.

Sesshoumaru was suddenly curious, "Have you sewn a ransom bag together? Was that your research? Did you cook a pie that the criminals will come crawling for? Women are not educated enough to know how crime and investigation works!"

Kagome gapped at him. The sexist remarks had her wanting to slap him. Unfortunately he continued, "How many meters are in a kilometer? When did the Revolutionary War begin? Why did the English sign the Declaration of Independence?"

It took her a moment to figure out he was challenging her. She was so angered that she took it welcomingly. "There are one thousand meters in one, single kilometer. The American Revolutionary War began in Seventeen Seventy-Five, the French Revolution was from Seventeen Eighty-Eight to Eighty-Nine," a smirk came upon her lips, and she folded her arms, "and the British didn't sign the Declaration of Independence. It was signed in seventeen seventy-six and there are fifty-six signatures on it."

Victoriously, she watched the shock appear on his face. She wasn't the average women with education, sent only to breed. She was a woman that had snuck off to school, and had suffered greatly for it. It was the main reasons she hadn't married. She was now nineteen and no man would marry someone that old. Usually they married a seventeen year old girl, and not a woman older.

Sesshoumaru was stunned speechless for a few moments. He snapped out when Kagome turned her back to him and began to make her way back into the pub. "What research did you do?" Sesshoumaru asked.

Kagome turned back to look at him and narrowed her eyes. "The letter," she said, "I haven't seen a paper like that in quite a while, the texture was off. I located to the only three shops that even print that paper. The second shop I visited told me that a large man came in and bought a stack of it only a week ago."

Sesshoumaru was stunned once more. He had found the same thing out too. It still shocked him that this mere slip of a woman had thought of such a small detail. "Did you get a description?" He asked.

"I did, I even sketched his face down," Kagome mumbled, "I was going to give it to you next time but you never came back."

Sesshoumaru tried to hide the smirk at the hidden sadness in her tone. He sighed and grabbed her arm before he dragged her back to the carriage. "You can't send me back home!" Kagome shouted frantically. She couldn't go back to her own home.

It was too strange now. She didn't know what to do. It was quiet and awkward. "I can help you," she suggest, she begged.

Sesshoumaru snorted. "You will," he demanded, "I'll pick you up tomorrow at dawn. Be ready!"

The grateful, happy glance she gave him made him want to kiss her once more. He was shocked to see her so happy, and the smile that came upon her lips made him want to hide her, to keep her to himself. That would not do.

"I will!" Kagome shouted as Shiyo pushed the horses forward. In case he hadn't heard, she stuck her head out the window.

Her black hair blew in the wind and she looked like a glowing goddess under the street light. "I'll be waiting for you!" She shouted.

Sesshoumaru growled to himself and rubbed his temples. What the hell did he just do?
