Betty woke up in bed, she looked around and realized she didn't recognize the room she was in. The bed, while comfortable, wasn't hers. Ignoring that, she stretched over the soft sheets and pulled the pillow closer to her. Movement behind her made her smile. Warm arms wrapped around her and pulled her into a familiar body. Betty let herself melt into Daniel. His mouth was now on her neck and traveled to her ear. "Good morning." He said in a deep, sleep filled voice.
Betty turned and looked into his blue eyes. "Morning." Something pulled at her mind, but she ignored it. Just a little longer… she thought to herself.
"So I know we have to get ready for work soon, but I was thinking we could fool around first." Daniel wiggled his eyebrows and smiled.
Betty smiled and blushed. She kissed Daniel sweetly and was about to say yes to his proposal when a sound caught her attention. The sound was a cry, a baby crying. Betty looked behind her and the monitor on her side table was flashing in time with the cries.
"Ugg….I will go get her." Before she could say anything Daniel was walking out the door. That nagging feeling in her mind was there again, and again she ignored it. When Daniel walked back into their bedroom, he was carrying a small pink wrapped bundle. "She was just wet. Say good morning to mommy." The look on Daniel's face while he looked down at the baby was a look Betty had never seen before. The love that was there was pure and made her heart melt. He handed the baby to Betty and a name flashed in her mind.
"Hello little Rosa. Did my angel sleep well?" the baby cooed and smiled up at Betty. Her head was covered in dark brown curls like Betty's but her eyes were all Daniel. Betty had never seen a more beautiful baby in her life. "She's so beautiful Daniel." Betty looked up, but Daniel wasn't there. "Daniel?" Betty called out. That feeling was there again. Betty looked down into her arms and was saddened to see just an empty pink blanket. It was a dream; it was all just a dream.
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she cried out in her sleep.
"Mija? Betty wake up." Ignacio was there holding her now. She continued to cry as the events from the night before came back to her. Opening her sore and red eyes she realized she was still in the waiting room at the hospital.
"Papa, have you heard anything?" She asked frantically.
"No I'm sorry." Ignacio let her pull away from him. Hilda and Justin were gone and as if he could hear her thought, Ignacio answered, "They went down to get some coffee." The entire family had been there all night. Daniel was rushed into the E.R. after arriving at the hospital. Wilhelmina has shot him in the back and now he was in surgery. Anger and worry filled her.
"Where is Claire?"
"She and Alexis are with Hilda. They let her go a few hours ago." Claire had been being questioned by the police. The second shot she had heard, was Claire's gun. Wilhelmina didn't make it to the hospital. Betty couldn't think about that, she wanted to know how Daniel was doing.
"You're awake dear." Claire said as they came into the secluded room. Betty stood and walked over to Claire. They hugged and both started to cry.
"I'm so sorry, it's all my fault."
"No, dear. You can not blame your self."
"But if I had just stayed out, if I had done what she had asked, Daniel wouldn't have had to protect me."
"Sweetheart, Wilhelmina was set on hurting us. She would have hurt Daniel regardless if you had been there or not." Claire let her own tears fall. Alexis came up behind her mother and put her hand on her shoulder.
"Has the doctor said anything?" Ignacio asked.
"Not yet. They were still in surgery when we last asked. I will go see if I can find someone." Alexis answered.
"Do you mind if I come with you? They won't tell me anything because I am not family." Betty said.
"Of course. I'm going to come as well. This waiting is killing me." Claire added.
After traveling down a long hall, Betty was convinced would never end, they saw the doctor coming through the swinging double doors leading to surgery. He noticed them and continued to walk in their direction. Betty felt her heart in her throat and her mouth went dry.
"Mrs. Meade." The doctor greeted before continuing. "So we were able to remove the bullets from Daniel's shoulder and head."
"How is he doing doctor?" Claire interrupted.
"He came through the surgery fine. The bullet in his shoulder caused some muscle damage, but nothing physical therapy cant help. The other bullet doesn't seem to have damaged the brain or the spinal cord, but there is some swelling and we won't know the extent of the damage until he wakes up ."
"What does that mean?" Claire asked. Betty could almost feel the room stiffen. They all held their breath as the doctor started to explain.
"Like I said we still don't know the extent of damage, but we are very optimistic that he will make a full recovery." The doctor was trying his best to consol them.
"Can we see him?" Alexi asked.
"One at a time. He is still sleeping but I'm sure hearing your voices will be comforting."
The three women started to walk past the doctor when he added, "I'm sorry but only family is aloud in recovery."
Before Betty could say anything, Claire was behind her. "She IS family." The look on Claire's Face was the same one she used in the board room and that always yielded the same results. Claire getting her way.
"I'm sorry of course." The Doctor let the nurse know that his patient had visitors before excusing himself. "If you need anything just let the nurses know and they will find me."
"Thank you doctor." Clair said smiling.
Betty waited, pacing out side the room as Claire and Alexis took their turns visiting with Daniel. Claire had said she could go in first, but something was keeping her out of the room. She wanted so badly to see his face. Even though Claire said she could go in first, Betty insisted on waiting. She still felt extremely guilty. No matter what her father, Claire or anyone else said, he still knew that Daniel getting shot was her fault. Part of her wished he would have been too late, wished the bullets would have hit their intended target. But because she ignored him, he had to protect her. Her mind reeled and her heart hurt. The man lying on the bed in the other room was not only the man she loved but her best friend and she could never forgive her self for getting him hurt.
"Betty, you should go in now. Alexis is going to take care of some things at the office for me so that I can lie down. I am going to the waiting area with your family and I will let them know what is going on." Claire smiled and started to walk away.
"It's okay, I can tell them you should stay." Betty was still unsure if she could look at Daniel in that room.
"Please honey, something tells me hearing your voice will be good for him." She smiled again and didn't give Betty a chance to argue.
Betty turned and stared at the door for what seemed like forever. "Excuse me, Miss? Are you going in?" A nurse asked from the station behind Betty. She had forgotten there were people behind her and she could feel her cheeks turning red. She knew she probably looked ridiculous just standing there staring at the door to Daniel's room, but find the strength to go in, was harder than she had thought.
"Yes, sorry, I just…" Betty trailed off not quite sure how she had intended of replying.
"It's okay. I understand. Take your time." The friendly nurse said. This time Betty looked at her. She was smiling softly. Her green eyes showed concern and compassion. Her name tag said 'Dawn'.
"Thank you Dawn. I think I will be okay now." Betty reassured her before opening the door and walking into the dimly lit room.
Closing the door behind her, Betty took in the room. There was a window on the far wall with blinds opened about half way up, a small flat screen TV was fastened on the wall next to the door, Betty assumed led to the bathroom. The walls were off white and what you would expect in a hospital. There were a few dressers Betty figured was filled with medical supplies. The beeping was too much for Betty to ignore any longer. She looked towards the bed. His face was still and he looked peaceful . The sight of the bandage coming around from the back of his head made more guilt and pain tighten around her heart. Betty didn't even try to hide the tears and let them stream down her face as she approached the bed. Betty reached down and took Daniel's hand. She tried to will him to squeeze her hand and give her a sign that everything would be okay.
"Daniel? If you can hear me, I just want you to know that I am so sorry. This is all my fault." Betty reached and grabbed a tissue to wipe her face. She sat there quietly watching him, wishing he would wake up and be okay. Then this nightmare could be over and they all could move on. Before she knew it, Betty was sleeping, her head lying on the bed her fingers laced with his.
The pain at the back of Daniels head made it hard to open his eyes, but the terror still fresh in his mind pushed through and when the light hit his eyes it was too much and he let out a painful moan. When he tried to reach up ad touch is eyes something pulled at his arm. He slowly opened one eyes and glanced down. He was wearing a hospital gown. His other eye opened and now Daniel could see the room. Confusion and worry flooded him and just as he was about to let out a cry for help, he noticed movement in the corner. There was a chair next to his bed and in it was a familiar face sleeping slumped onto his bed. Her hand was still holding his other hand and Daniel felt comforted.
Daniel moved to pull his hand from hers and she started to stir. "Betty?"
"Daniel?" Betty smiled up at him and then, looking shocked, asked "how long have you been awake. I should get the doctor."
"Betty wait," Daniel reached for her, "Other than this head ache I feel fine, what happened?"
"Daniel I really think I should get the doctor. But I am so happy you are awake, I lo…"
"Betty," Daniel said interrupting her. "What happened?"
"You don't remember?" Betty asked starting to get concerned.
"The last thing I remember is leaving work after we finished brainstorming over the May spread. Why am I in the hospital and.." Daniel paused and winced as the pain came back. "And why does my head hurt so bad?"
"May? But..." The realization hit Betty. "Daniel, that was almost three months ago."
"I have been asleep for three months?!" Daniel started to panic.
"No, Daniel. But I need to get the doctor." Betty pushed the red panic button next to the bed.
Within minutes the room was full of nurses and the doctor Betty had met earlier. Clair was there and Alexis was on her way back giving Betty a minute to slip out of the room and find the nearest bathroom. As soon as the door was locked behind her, the tears streamed from her eyes and Betty fought to keep air in her lungs. 'How could this happen?' Betty thought over and over as she slid to the floor.
