Author's note: Welcome back, dear readers! Any time to get back to you is too long.
I thank you all once more for joining me.
In the previous part, Rhûn was the setting. The Easterlings have goals and prophecies of their own. What are they? Well, since this is the part where East meets West, a few things will be cleared up here. But let's first return to a few characters I'm sure you remember from last time.
I hope you'll enjoy!
Please read and review!
The Lone Islands
The albatross is flying, making him daydream
The time before he became one of the world's unseen.
Princess in the tower, children in the fields;
Life gave him it all an island of the universe.
Oh, now his love's a memory, a ghost in the fog.
He sets the sails one last time saying farewell to the world.
Anchor to the water, seabed far below,
Grass still in his feet and a smile beneath his brow.
This is for long forgotten light at the end of the world,
Horizon crying the tears we left behind so long ago.
So long ago…
So long ago…
Nightwish: 'The Islander'
Headed for the Islands
I've got my memories
Always inside of me
But I can't go back
Back to how it was
I believe you now
I've come too far
No, I can't go back
Back to how it was
Created for a place I've never known
This is home
Now I'm finally where I belong
Where I belong
Yeah, this is home
I've been searching for a place of my own
Now I've found it
Maybe this is home
Yeah, this is home
Switchfoot: 'This is home'
(Peter)
Lord Admiral Drinian of the Lone Islands knocked on the door of his cabin, which he had waived in favor of his Emperor.
"Enter!" Peter called, grabbing for his tunic.
When the Lord Admiral entered, he said: "My apologies, Your Majesty."
The Emperor laughed. "Oh, come now, Drinian! Unless you can see through a leather jacket and chain mail, I'm already dressed. It's just pretty cold like this. And I really can listen while pulling a tunic over my head. I've done that so often in the field in Narnia…"
Drinian smiled. "So it's true. You have Eastern blood. But I actually came to report we've sighted land on the horizon. We have every reason to assume it's the Islands. We should be able to disembark in Port Imperial soon."
Peter, having meanwhile put on his tunic, nodded. "Excellent. Is Lucy awake?"
"I've already seen Her Highness on deck. Do you command she comes to you?" the man asked.
The boy shook his head. "No, I'll join her on deck. That's what I came for after all, to see the Islands, isn't it? Inform her and Oreius. And tell the General to come on deck."
The High King of Narnia girded his sword Rhindon and put his shield on his back. He very briefly hesitated; then he also put on his armor gloves.
Now he was in full battle equipment.
The Dawn Treader was a huge ship. His cabin alone could have been a guest room for a lower noble at Cair Paravel. And then Drinian still had an almost equally large cabin for Lucy, a relatively comfortable one for himself and permanent places for 300 Imperial Marines and dozens of other crew members. On top of that, he had found place for the Royal Centaur Guard with Oreius, the Royal Guard of Gondor, the Evenstar Guard, Imrahil, Faramir, Legolas and Gimli.
(Peter)
The whole matter had started about three weeks earlier. Drinian had finally shown himself again in Narnia, after years of absence. In fact it had been the first time Peter had seen his subjects on the Islands in person; he had been so busy in Narnia…
The Lord Admiral had said he and the rest of the Imperial Navy had spent 7 years away from home. They had set up supplies and bases on small, uninhabited islands and crossed the Glistening Eastern Sea in search of pirates, corsairs under Sauron and slave traders from Rhûn.
Finally, Drinian had reported, he had returned to Port Imperial, because his men logically missed their families and after all those years it was getting unbearable. However, he hadn't seen a Narnian flag anywhere and thought it was suspicious. He had called his Marines together and promised them they would immediately return and set foot on the soil they were born to, but they would report to the Emperor first. After all, he had told them, it was possible the Islands and their families were in danger, and the Emperor might be able to help them better. The men had agreed to his proposal; after 7 years, a month and a half really wasn't that very long anymore.
Meanwhile Lucy, despite early resistance from a few high nobles, had been crowned Queen in Gondor. Arwen, now Queen Mother, had adopted the Kings and Queen of Narnia, according to the wish of her husband and daughter. The day after that the Sibling Treaty was signed: the war between the Union and Narnia was ended, Narnia regained all of the territory it had possessed before the war, Lucy would be crowned Queen of Narnia, and Narnia would become a part of the Union.
Lucy herself had become more serious and less cheerful; some said she had 'died along with her father.'
She had just been crowned the day before the Dawn Treader had landed near Cair Paravel; she was now Lucy the Valiant of the House Telcontar, Queen of Narnia, Maiden of Cair Paravel and Princess of the Lone Islands. Peter, Susan and Edmund were now in fact officially 'of the Houses Pevensie and Telcontar', but they continued to refer to themselves as 'of the House Pevensie'. Lucy on the other hand really tried to be one of them: she often called herself 'of the Houses Telcontar and Pevensie', even though that wasn't correct.
After Drinian had come and told his tale, Arwen, Lucy and the Pevensies had debated. They agreed Peter would go to the Lone Islands, as Emperor. Lucy would accompany him. Arwen would return to Minas Tirith to hold court there on behalf of her daughter and leave for Cair Paravel again after five weeks. Susan and Edmund would rule Narnia.
Oreius and the Captains of the Gondorian Royal Guard and the Evenstar Guard insisted they should accompany their respective protégés, with their men, and after all they'd been through in Narnia Faramir, Imrahil, Legolas and Gimli refused to let Lucy go anywhere without their personal protection.
So now they were on their way to the Islands, with that pretty large force, to track the problem and destroy it.
(Peter)
The Emperor came on deck.
The Marines saluted. Peter, as a Pevensie first and foremost a soldier, returned their salute. He immediately found Lucy – not so very difficult, because she was always surrounded by her guard. And again his heart broke.
Her childish curiosity had slightly been stimulated again by the Islands on the horizon, but even now she looked rather weary. Like it didn't matter anymore… Well, what were a couple of islands, compared to her father?
At first, Peter had feared for her. She was the only female presence on the ship, and there were 300 Marines on board who generally hadn't seen a woman in 7 years. Of course that fear turned out to be groundless. If Peter had understood the synthesis between Narnians and Easterlings better, he would've felt just fine from the start. They had a strong aversion of both rape – for Narnians the worst a man could do – and child abuse, the ultimate evil in Eastern view. Even if Lucy had walked around naked, they still wouldn't have touched her; Peter was confident about that now.
Besides, she had the same effect on them she had on pretty much everyone: she was seen as a younger sister by the youngest sailors and as a daughter by the others, and there was no one who even thought about doing anything to her. Quite the contrary: to protect her, they would've gladly butchered their own comrades.
And apart from that, she still had her own completely loyal bodyguard: the Evenstar Guard, twenty brave soldiers who were bound to her person by oath. The Captain barely slept; he was also one of those people who needed little sleep. Instead he personally stood guard at night at the cabin of his Princess, his Queen. He fell asleep on the hard wooden floor in front of her door several times. And every three hours new guards came, always in pairs. And during the day she had the Gondorian nobles and the two Generals who had only come along to protect her.
She was safe.
(Lucy)
Lucy came to Peter.
Her new brother. She smiled weakly. He loved her. She loved him too. He was a great brother, always ready with an encouraging word or light-hearted joke. But she couldn't forget about her father. Wherever he was.
Her protectors followed her closely, as always.
"Peter," she said, and she gave him a hug.
"Hey, Lucy," he answered with a kind smile.
He smiled often and gladly. The Islanders surely would see a lot of it; they would look at him, and not only because he was Emperor. He was young, and good-looking, which was always an advantage when you wanted to impact the masses. He would be able to rally anyone of some goodwill behind him. And he hardly looked like what the Islanders were used to: the Islanders weren't as dark as the full-blooded Easterlings, but not as white as Peter, and just like their Eastern ancestors most of them had dark hair and dark eyes. Peter, blonde and white and with eyes somewhere between sea and sky, would definitely stand out.
Lucy let go of him and asked: "So, that's Port Imperial?"
Drinian, who had meanwhile brought Oreius on deck, nodded. "Portus Imperialis in our own language. The capital of our island realm."
Oreius had keen eyes and noticed: "Strange. Not a Narnian flag in sight."
He passed a spy-glass to Peter – an invention of the Islanders, who often spent days at sea and therefore knew all about sailing and in whose best interests it was to make it go smoothly.
Peter looked at the city on the horizon and confirmed: "Indeed… No flags at all, actually. But the Islands have been Narnia's for centuries."
After that he studied the harbor.
He returned the spy-glass to Drinian, with the question: "Warships are your area of expertise. What's in that port?"
Drinian looked on his turn. He amply took his time, and when he put the spy-glass away again, he looked very seriously.
"A few warships of ours. My Marines have been extremely patient. The rest of the Navy will soon come here as well. Besides that, our ships are abandoned. That's not right. And I see other ships. Clearly warships. Easterlings and Corsairs of Umbar, if the reports I've read about the Corsair Kings are accurate. If that is the case, they're a long way from home… And I believe I… Is that possible? Your Majesty, I think I see an Eastern slave ship!"
Peter growled and grabbed for his sword. "We should find out. Drinian, how many men can we bring ashore?"
"We need three crossings for the Centaur Guard, Your Majesty. Meanwhile the we can use the boats to take all of the Princess' protectors, Her Highness and Your Majesty yourselves, myself and about a hundred Marines ashore."
Peter nodded. "Then let's do that. Cast anchor, Lord Admiral."
Then he called to the men: "All soldiers, full fighting equipment!"
(Lucy/Peter)
The first boats came ashore.
Lucy had taken off her Royal garments. Beneath those, she wore something in between a dress and a tunic. It still allowed her to present herself as a noble, but she could move much more freely.
The Evenstar Guard, Legolas, Gimli, Faramir and Imrahil jumped on land after her.
"Listen," she said softly.
The newly arrived were met with a deathlike silence.
"It's so quiet," the young Queen whispered.
The Centaurs grew nervous; the Marines reached for their crossbows. Faramir and Imrahil looked around uneasily.
Peter thought it was all quite suspicious.
Calmly he shouted: "Oreius!"
The General immediately stood by his side.
The High King commanded: "You and the other Centaurs stay here with Drinian and his men. If we haven't sent word by tomorrow, you may be interested in sending help."
"Yes, Your Majesty," the Captain of the Centaur Guard nodded.
Lucy listened carefully and gave the Captain of her Royal Guard similar instructions.
After that the Emperor addressed Lucy and the rest of her people: "You can come with me."
(Jarw - Tao)
"Admiral!"
The Shogun looked in the direction pointed out to him. Further ahead a ship was anchored.
"They're here," Targutai concluded.
Admiral Jarw – Tao nodded.
"Orders, Admiral?" a sailor asked.
The officer thought for a while; then he commanded: "Make port. Soldiers and marines, make ready to disembark. Corsairs of Umbar ahead. The Daimyo stay with me."
(Nazgûl)
"Curses. There's almost nothing left," the Nazgûl hissed.
The captain of his small band of Khândian mercenaries responded: "The Admiral is unreliable, my lord."
The Nazgûl ordered the captain of the large black ship: "Cast anchor. Have the battalion disembark."
The man nodded and went to work.
The Khândian mercenary captain asked: "What about the Admiral? He's been asking questions about the policy in Rhûn."
"Does he know about the Dark One's plans for the future?"
In the silence the Ringwraight clearly heard the answer.
Cold as ice and hard as steel he concluded: "Then maybe he has served his purpose."
Author's note: So, Sauron didn't rely on the Admiral alone. Either that or the attack on his Clan was only part of a larger plot.
Yeah, sorry, mostly teaser and prologue, but I thought making it longer would make it too long. Now we've had some exposition, and next time things will only get more interesting.
Coming up next on 'The King, the Girl and the Lion – With a Vengeance': Peter has finally set foot on his Islands, for the first time since his coronation. And immediately he runs into trouble. What happened the past 7 years? How do Easterlings and Corsairs and Nazgûl and all just get on the Islands without the Emperor hearing about it? That's what Peter came to find out. And he'll find out the hard way…
If you want something else to read, my friend Supreme Arcanite Magician will undoubtedly be happy to oblige with 'Yu-Gi-Oh: European Duel Academy'. It's very different from this one, but it's good. If you enjoyed the prequel – which I assume you did if you kept reading to this part – there's two videos about it on YouTube: the original, which gave me my original inspiration, by Nonokun24, and one made after I had started the prequel by EdwardElricGirl200.
