With spring break madness and my sister coming to visit, it may be a week or so before my next update. I personally hate waiting so long between updates so if I'm trying as much as possible to upload as close together as I can. This chapter is just a little filler. In the next one we should get back to business. Enjoy:)

"We've done everything I can think of," Katara sighed. "Now, our only option is to be patient and continue to monitor her."

Kya nodded. The two women were perched on the edge of Lin's bed. It had been almost a day since Tenzin had come barreling to the island with an unconscious Lin in his arms. Since then, neither Katara nor Kya had left Lin's side for longer than necessary. The two women had worked tirelessly trying to find and heal any sign of distress in Lin's body. Despite their combined efforts, Lin remained still. Though her breathing had remained steady, Lin's skin continued to radiate heat from the fever that consumed her body.

"I hate this mom," Kya leaned against her mother's shoulder. Seeing her daughter's distress, Katara reached an arm around her. "I hate not knowing that she's going to be okay. I'm a healer. We are healers. We are the best there is and we have accomplished nothing."

"Don't think like that," Katara stated quietly. "Lin's strong. If it is indeed poison, the fact that she is still alive is something to celebrate."

"I wonder if Dad and Tenzin have found anything at the police station."

"They should be back soon. It's almost mid-day and they left just after dawn." Katara reached for Kya's hand and interlocked their fingers. This contact brought both women comfort. "I'm so glad you happened to be visiting right now. I don't think I could do this without you."

At these words, a small smile spread across Kya's face. It seemed out of place. Dark circles and frown lines tainted Kya's features, side effects from the stress of the last day. "Thanks mom. I just wish I was actually helping. Speaking of mothers… have the air acolytes heard back from Toph yet?"

"No." Katara shook her head. "I asked when I went to eat lunch. Her apartment is empty and she didn't bother to mention to anyone where she was going or when she planned to be back. Typical Toph, just taking off without a word. I swear, ever since she retired she's been more of a wild card than she was back in her youth."

"I don't blame her. It's not like she had the luxury of leaving Republic City when she was the Chief of Police." Kya said. "I know it frustrates Tenzin that he has to go on his diplomatic trips without Lin. She refuses to leave the city any more than necessary."

"Like mother, like daughter." Katara laughed. "I've decided that if we don't hear from Toph by tonight, I'm going to send a line to Suyin. Maybe Toph is in Su's new city."

"You know how Lin feels about Su," Kya said warningly. "Are you sure you want to involve her?"

"Absolutely. I don't care how much negativity and resentment is between those two. Lin's fighting for her life. Su's not heartless. She's just been… lost. She will want to know of Lin's condition just as much as her mother."

Kya knew her mother was right. "Perhaps we should send a line with or without word from Toph."

"Good idea sweetie. Why don't you take a break and go get something to eat? While you're at it, have an air acolyte send a line to Su."

"Alright. Do you need anything mother?"

"No, I'm fine for now." Katara gently squeezed Kya's hand. "Now go try and relax a little."

Kya nodded and left the room. She immediately set off for her father's study in search of a pencil and paper. She stared aimlessly at the paper, unsure of what to write to Suyin. Though Kya had always been closer to Lin, she loved Su as a little sister and had been heartbroken to see her sent to Gaoling. Tears came to Kya's eyes as she started at the blank piece of paper in her hand. How could Kya tell Su that her sister was currently fighting for her life? She knew that the instant Su received the message that she would be consumed with guilt. Since leaving Republic City, the sisters had had no form of communication between them. Kya knew that if anything were to happen to Lin, Su would never forgive herself for removing herself from Lin's life. After several attempts, Kya finally wrote a message she deemed suitable.

Su,

I hope you are doing well. I'm writing to let you know that Lin is currently under the care of my mother and I on Air Temple Island. She came down with a remarkably high fever yesterday and has yet to regain consciousness. We are both doing our best to heal her, but so far she has not seemed to respond to the treatment. Her condition has not worsened, though, and my mother and I see this as a positive sign.

There is even more bad news. In all our experience with healing, neither mom nor I have ever seen a natural sickness like this. We think that your sister has been the target of an attack. Tenzin and dad are currently looking into the matter.

We've been trying to reach your mother. If she is with you, will you please let her know what is going on? If she's not, do you happen to know where she is?

All my love,

Kya

Kya reread the letter. It seemed cold and oddly formal, yet she felt that this was the best way to approach such a delicate situation. With one final examination, Kya signed the letter and set off to find an air acolyte to send it.

Just as she was about to leave for the dormitories, the phone in the main room of their house rang. Kya ran to answer it, hoping that it would be Tenzin with news.

"Hello?"

"Hey Kya, it's me."

"Tenzin!" Kya did not attempt to hide her relief that it was indeed her brother on the line. "Tenzin, please tell me you have news."

"We do. Mom's assumption was correct. Lin's teacup was missing. She's been poisoned."

"Oh no." Kya's heart sank. Before, Kya treated the theory of Lin's poisoning with caution. Now that there was hard evidence, the truth seemed to take her breath away. There could be no more denying that Lin was simply sick. Someone indeed wanted her dead and had given it a decent shot.

"Tell mom. Dad and I are going back to my apartment right now. We have some things we need to sort through. I'll call you if anything has changed."

With that, Tenzin hung up, leaving Kya alone with just the hole in her heart for company.
