Summary: Korra and Asami get into a race; competition, romance, and pizza ensue!
"Korra, are you alright?" Asami looked up from her sketches to find Korra setting across from her, "You're awfully quiet over there."
"Yeah, I'm just…thinking." Korra went back to her thoughts for a moment, then stood up, "Asami, I was thinking, we should have a race, me and you."
Asami smiled wryly at the Avatar's declaration, "You're so silly, come here." Asami patted the seat next to her.
"Well, what's the problem?" Korra asked, before Asami kissed her cheek.
"You don't have a license." she said in a singsong manner, after leaving the Avatar's lips.
"That's fine, I've got Naga, she loves running, and she's almost as fiercely determined as I am."
"Well, that makes two of us." Asami whispered.
"Then let's do it! I had the kids stock her up on carbo-whatevers and everything!"
"Carbo-whatevers?" Asami asked, amusedly.
"Hey, I know what carbohydrates are; this is just a thing Varrick made up for the Annual Polardog Races."
Asami smiled again and stood up, "I'll prep the car while you have Naga do some warm-ups."
"Alright!" Korra yelled enthusiastically.
"So, Asami," Korra called out to her girlfriend, who sat behind the wheel of her vehicle, "what are the stakes?"
"Stakes? I hadn't considered it, but we could negotiate after we're done." Asami said, turning back to the track, mentally preparing herself for a very unusual track run.
"Oh, come on, you had a thought, didn't you?" Korra coaxed.
"Alright, alright…I was thinking that the loser should fix breakfast." Asami said, after a moment's hesitation.
"Seriously? I can make some firebender style omelets anytime I want to." Korra crossed her arms and stared at Asami, one eyebrow raised, as if asking what was really on her mind.
"Specifically, whatever the winner chooses, not an easy task for either of us, huh?" Asami smiled triumphantly at Korra, as though she had just won.
"Wow…that's actually a lot tougher than my idea, which was that the loser has to wash the winning polardog, isn't that right, girl?" Korra asked Naga as she leaned against the furry back of her victory hopeful.
"I think you mispronounced 'car' worse than anything I've heard."
"Yeah?" Korra asked, not impressed.
"Yeah." Asami affirmed, staring up at Korra.
"Then you're worse at pre-battle taunts than I thought. I can teach you some, over breakfast, which, by the way is-"
"Are we here to race, or call in an order?" Asami interrupted, smiling as more comebacks came to mind.
"Hey, that's a great idea!" Korra exclaimed, sliding off her companion's soft and snowy white back, "I'll be right back!" she yelled as she disappeared behind a wall.
"Oh, what toppings do you want?" Korra asked, reappearing behind the wall, stretching the phone's cord as she did, but careful not to repeat a mistake of unplugging the phone like she had done before, not accustom to having to stand in any one place as she spoke.
"Uh, just whatever." Asami shrugged.
"Alright, I'll see if they have an 'uh just whatever.'" She smiled as Asami stared at her, amused by the Avatar, "Hello, yes, I'd like to place an order."
"Alright victory pizza's on the way, fifteen minutes; do you think we can top that?" Korra asked, presenting the challenge to Asami as well as Naga.
"Yeah!" Asami shouted, as Naga barked her thoughts on the topic, which were much alike Korra's and Asami's.
"Great, I sent them to Korra Park." Asami felt her jaw slack in surprise, realizing what Korra was proposing.
"What?!" Asami exploded, "Korra, we could get hurt, street racing's a crime, even if no one gets hurt."
"I planned on using the Korra Highway," Korra pointed out, adding a foreign element to her reply, "no traffic, no refund, no excuses, let's get that pizza!"
"Right." Asami said uncertainly, before she ignited the engines with her key and set the car in reverse, she put the car back in drive and turned onto the path leading to a garage door, stopping next to where Naga sat.
"On the count to pizza; ready?!" Korra asked, her light voice raised distracting Asami momentarily.
"Set!" Asami called back.
"Pizza!" Korra yelled.
Asami dug into the pedal, the once often common feeling of speed and power hitting her again, and any doubts she had that it would be a race with more maneuvering and risk than speed and calculations were put to rest, as she found the road more than wide enough for two cars, or, in this case, one car and a polardog.
Naga barked happily, the wind ruffling her fur, and Asami's car roared in a manner that also sounded happy, if a car could be happy. She watched Korra whisper to Naga, and her goggled eyes went wide as Naga looked back at her and leapt forward.
"Hey!" Asami yelled into the microphone after finding the button on the steering wheel, "No leaping, Korra!" she warned.
Korra laughed on the other side and slowed down, "Whatever you say, officer!"
"Well, don't give me the lead for that."
"I'm not, I just wanted to be fair when I ask you to pull out all the stops!"
"Are you sure? Without the limits, this thing can be pretty fast."
"Do it!" Korra said, encouragingly. Asami nodded and pulled a lever, a stopper under the peddle retracted into the floor, allowing Asami to press faster.
"We're at five minutes!" Asami called, after she took a glance at the clock on the car radio.
Korra watched Asami disappear behind her, though the engineer came up on the other side and roared ahead of Naga.
"You still back there?" Asami asked. Upon hearing disgruntled growls on the other side she laughed, "I told you this thing could be kind of hard to keep up with!"
"I'm calling it," Korra declared, and Asami thought that was the end of the race, but Korra turned to her polardog friend, "hop, Naga, hop!"
Asami felt the giant creature slam into the ground as it leapt up and back down, slowly catching up.
In a trail of dust Naga gained the first position, but her competitor wasn't far behind, and as soon as the engineer spotted an opening she went for it, the road narrowed soon enough to keep Naga at bay without taking too much road for her to adjust with, so she had to stay in second place for a long enough stretch.
After what Korra thought would be forever, the road opened up more and she took her shot, leaping Naga way over Asami, slamming down and kicking up dust. She didn't even remember this road, it must be old and quietly maintained, or new and set up while she was on vacation with Korra, which wasn't really long, she assured herself, just long enough.
They competed for first place for some time, but when Asami called out thirteen minutes, Korra patted the side of Naga's head, "Alright, girl, let's go!"
Asami noticed Naga was speeding up and scanned the road for an advantage; the only thing she could find was a turn up ahead, Naga would also have to slow down a little, but wouldn't pick up momentum again like Asami's Satomobile would.
Korra noticed the turn too, but it didn't occur to her that Naga would slow down before turning, and when she did she heard Asami laughing into the microphone.
"Naga, hello?" she began frantically, "First place, winning, me not having to cook Asami's breakfast, any of this ringing a bell?"
Naga barked at Asami's car, which had slowed down to make the turn with greater efficiency than Naga, and now had slowed down as they were moving into the main highway now, but Naga was already catching up, but as they passed a small sign one the entrance to the highway that read Korra Highway ended there, Asami cheered, celebrating, and Korra knew she lost…this time, not next time, though, she told herself.
Later at the park, Korra slid off Naga's back, and joined Asami on a bench.
"Well, you won," Korra said, smiling slightly, "but I guess it's only fair, that you win our first run on your road."
"Wait, what?" Asami asked, confused.
"Well, I don't have any use for a stretch of road that long, I'm not really sure why they gave me a road at all," she said, remembering it was built while she was on vacation with Asami, which she hadn't thought was long, but it seemed it was long enough, "beyond me saving the world from Kuvira's Earth Empire…I'd have settled for a medal or something."
"Korra, that's so sweet, thank you!" Asami pulled Korra into a hug, and Korra didn't mind that Asami might be slightly overreacting.
"Uh, not really, you're the only one I know who liked racing so much."
"True, but I'm still happy you gave it to me, you could have sold it to someone who would name it after themselves."
"I wanted to give it to you, though…on that note, Varrick offered to buy it for Zhu Li…I guess their third or fourth week anniversary's coming up and he wanted to do something special…or something."
"It's been fourteen minutes, since you placed the order, right?"
"Yeah, I told them in front of the Korra statue, the only universal point of reference I know of. I wonder where…Bolin, what are you doing here?" Korra asked, surprised more by the fact that he was carrying a stack of pizza boxes than that he was here.
"Oh, uh…hmm, that was you on the phone, then…Price Wu—Mister Wu, I mean, opened a restaurant and hired me and Mako to be pizza boys!" he seemed enthusiastic, though Korra wasn't sure why the former prince built a pizzeria.
"Why did he open a pizza restaurant?" Korra inquired.
"Oh, he's building a band, he needs to make sure he doesn't run out of money, so to secure…finances, so he spent money so he would have money flowing in, Mako said it was a good investment…guess what the place is called!"
"Uh…Pizza Prince?" Korra offered.
"Royal Pizza?" Asami felt confident that was it.
"No, and no…Fire Ferrets!" Bolin exclaimed, titling the box to show them the picture of Pabu, a crown on his head.
"Oh, that was…what that read, on the phonebook, when I called you…I figured it was an old advertisement, or something."
"Well, Opal says it'll be a busy day since it's a weekend, we have all three cars out right now."
"You, Mako, and Opal are all delivering pizza?" Korra asked, curious.
"Oh, no, Mako has to keep the flames up, Opal's there to choke the fire when I'm not, and Wu's on karaoke, it's just me, granny and Varrick."
"He gets around." Asami noted.
"He's selling some glassware on the side." Bolin informed.
"Varrick is quite the multitasker." Asami remarked.
"That's what Wu said. Well, enjoy your pizzas!"
Bolin left the girls with their pizza and ran back to his car.
"I wonder if Wu will let us don the outfit whenever we're bored…whoever gets the most sold wins?" Korra turned to see Asami heavily considering it.
"I was thinking the same thing." Asami said, "Loser hands over their pay to the winner who spends it on any activity of their choosing, the loser would come along, naturally." Asami added.
"That takes the work out of it for the loser." Korra said as she picked a pineapple out of the box as it fell of her slice.
They enjoyed an otherwise typical afternoon with each other…and Naga.
Author's Note's: KHH and hi! This is a prompt for you, alexandra (it took me a while, but today I found out how to do this, so I went for it)!
Also, there was no subtitle to speak of. It was going to be "Car vs. Polardog: Pizza Hunter's Adventure" but it was too long for FF, so…yeah, I took that down, sorry for any confusion.
alexandra (guest): I'm glad to hear you love the prompts, but I plan on tossing some more of my stuff up here…whenever I find out how to convey my ideas with words, until then…keep the prompts coming, you guys are good at making some fun ones for me to write, props for all! {-;
Also, I haven't heard that, but I do know a lot of stuff gets put up on Netflix, so I imagine that would be a true step up for it…it's already famous because Korrasami's sailing! {-;
fred (guest): I'm glad it seems that way for you! Too bad you can't wait for…whenever they used to air cartoons on Nickelodeon, this isn't as regular…but pretty good for one person? (That's my roundabout way of apologizing for the extraordinarily long wait you've been subjected to.)
Ming (guest): I'm glad to hear it, here's hoping it stays that way! {-:]
mrdbznarutofan: well, I was just so glad to see you liked it, and glad you spoke your mind, that I just had to fix the awkward thing…which did seem weird when I saw it. I would like to encourage you to dish out some more constructive criticism, as well as anyone who reads this…but don't get me wrong, I'm always glad to hear what I do right too!
Reader (it must be you!): thanks for taking the time to read this…if you have thoughts on this, I'd like to hear them, if this would have been perfect except (insert imperfection her), then send it, tell me, I'll be sure to look into it.
