After another dreamless sleep, I don't expect to wake up to the sound of loud yelling and stomping feet outside of my door. I stumble out of my bed and groggily go to the window and look out. My half asleep eyes focus on a bunch of monstrous card-like things swarming all over the front yard. As I keep watching, I see a hooded man walk from amongst them. The card monsters drag out a bloody and badly beaten Nios and throw him at the feet of the man. Nios looks like he's been through hell, with gash after gash weeping blood from his sides, chest and back. Yet, despite the injuries, he stands up and faces the man, his microphone that was once attached to his belt transforming into a sword in the shape of a key. The man says something that I can't hear enough to understand, but Nios yells loud and clear: "Fuck you! This is a free land! I won't give up what I've sworn to protect!" and lunges at the man. The man dodges the attack and waves a hand. That's when the monsters around them close in on Nios with intentions to slaughter him. "No Nios!" I scream at the window. Yet, I know I can't stop the tragedy from happening. Though, Nios fights valiantly, the card monsters tear into him, finishing his life. Yet he is only killed when the cloaked man drives a sword through Nios's chest. I collapse to the ground, trembling in despair from what I witnessed.
Suddenly, the door to my room opens and closes quickly. I quickly turn around to see a scared Cheshire pressed against the door. He is panting and trembling, with blank eyes that are wide with fear. He doesn't seem to notice me at the moment. "Cheshire are you okay?" I ask. He looks up at me with panic, but calms down when he realizes it's me. "Brianna, we gotta go" his voice is panicky as he dashes around the room, quickly trying to find the secret passageway. He finds it and opens it. "Here, you go first" he tells me. I go through the passageway an look behind me to see a doorway that is pitch black. Cheshire passes through it and places his hand on another cat symbol to make the doorway disappear. He grabs my hand and starts running down the corridor. Lanterns light up and blow out as we pass, lighting the way. After a bunch of winding turns, we finally stop at a dead end. We both try to catch our breath. "Are we trapped?" I ask looking at the dead end. He shakes his head and runs his hand over another cat symbol. A dark doorway appears and he smiles weakly at me. I nod and head through the passageway. He follows behind quickly, and we run out into the garden that is behind the manor. Even in this dark time, the garden's flowers seem to glow with beauty.
I gasp and stop briefly to admire the beauty of the flowers. Cheshire comes up beside me and looks at them, too. "These are Cheshire flowers. They only grow here. Mother used to care for them, but they grow on their own now" he says in a sad voice. "I'm so sorry for what happened. If only there was some way to help, I would" I whisper. He shakes his head. "No. Lets go, though. I know a hiding place we can go to" he takes my hand and leads me into the forest. The two of us come across an old tree with it's roots showing. Cheshire drags his claws across the roots and they cringe away, revealing a dark hole in the ground. He looks at me. "Where does this go?" I ask. "It's just a hole in the ground. We can hide here" he explains. "Alright, but where is everybody else?" I ask in a worried voice. He sighs and says: "I looked in their rooms, but no one was in them. They probably went and hid, too." He sounds like he is trying to reassure himself more than me. He doesn't sound very sure though. "Lets just hope everything is going to be alright" I say as I climb down into the hole. He nods sadly and follows you. The space under the tree is actually comfortable fitting the two of you. It is kind of dark, though."I hope no one see us" I whisper. He yawns and snuggles up to you. "They won't." he mumbles as he falls asleep. I try to comfort him as I fall asleep to.
The next morning, you are woken up from the warm sunlight seeping through the parted roots. Cheshire isn't with you anymore. "Cheshire where are you?" I said as I climbed out of the hole. There is no answer, but you can+ see smoke coming from the mansion that was once very majestic. "No... That beautiful mansion is now burned and still on fire how do I put it out" I said trying to find a water source. You suddenly hear someone cry out in pain at the mansion. "Cheshire!" I yell and ran towards the voice. When you get there, you see that the building had lost most of it's color, the beautiful garden you had just admired yesterday was all dead, trampled by the monsters and the forest all around was as silent as the grave. You investigate further and go into the house. You step in something wet and warm and look down to see a trail of blood at your feet. The blood is trailed throughout the house. I follow the trail of blood. The trail leads to the front door, which is cracked open to the front yard. You can hear soft sounds of crying coming from there. I look through the door. The strong smell of blood hits you, making you want to puke, and you see Cheshire crumpled on his knees in front of the unmoving forms of his family members. It is obvious that they are dead from the blood pooled and splattered all around. I gasp and squeal: "Cheshire!" He doesn't move. I start to look at each family member. Each person has deep cuts and burns. You find Nios first, the Jayjay, then Kate. Each unmoving and covered in their own blood. Then you realize that one is missing. "Wait! Loren is missing where is he?" I ask looking around for his body. Cheshire still doesn't answer and starts shivering. "are you ok Chess?" I ask him. He still doesn't move, but hunches over even more. "come on lets see if we can find Loren." I tell him as i walk over to him carefully and make sure I be careful not to step somewhere I shouldn't. You hear him whimper and he shakes more violently. You see his claws digging in his shoulders, drawing his own blood. You can't see his face from his hair. "Chess you're scaring me come on!" i said scared. Suddenly, Chess screams out in agony and starts crying uncontrollably. He flings himself into you, like a child who wanted to be comforted by his mother. He mumbles things like: "Why?" and "I should've helped" in between sobs. I put my arms around him in a hug "It's okay if you helped I would have died, you remember that okay!" I said trying to sooth him. He soon calms down and just sniffles. He pulls away and looks up at you. "Why did this have to happen? Why my family? Who… who…" he trails off and sniffles. rubbing his eyes he clutches at your shirt, burying his face in it again. "I don't know who but we will make them pay for what they did" I said angry at who would dare do this. He stands up in front of you and nods. "Yeah. I'll make sure. No one messes with the Cheshire family and lives." as he says this, his voice changes from his childish voice, into his normal voice. His image blurs and changes back into his teenage form right in front of you. When you finally see his eyes, they have anger in them. i gulped and squeezed my eyes ready for the worst. You just feel a warm hand on your shoulder. "Thank you, Bri." Chess says softly to you. I open my eyes and look at him, smile and nod "you're welcome I'm just glad I could help" I said softly too. He smiles and stands back up, offering his hand to you. i took his hand. He pulls you up to your feet and says: "Now, how are we supposed to get back?"
