Chapter 5 Midnight Escapades

Hotaru managed to return to the sun dormitory without running into anyone else thankfully. She didn't think that she could muster up the strength to handle any more unpleasant surprises. The dark haired girl was frustrated at what was happening, things were quickly spiralling out of control and it had only been a couple of hours since she had returned to the academy. The Saturn princess did not understand why she was feeling this way. Ever since she had left she had tried to become stronger. She trained until she could train no more every single day. Sometimes Usa-mama would have to literally drag her away from the training area and force her to relax and enjoy herself.
So long she had been running from the events that had transpired here and honestly she did not know if she had the strength or will to continue running. If not for the promise that she had made to Zero the day she had left she probably would have given up a long time ago. However she would continue running for as long as she could so as to make sure that the one that she loved would continue living. Quickly creeping through the silent halls of the sun dormitory as almost everyone had gone out to see the night class walk to their lessons she arrived at the room that Raven was staying in undisturbed. She needed to talk to someone about what had just occurred.
She still had the bad habit of biting her lip when she was worried or lost in thought and winced at the slight pain of her sharp fangs but thankfully had enough sense of mind to stop herself before she broke the fragile skin not wanting to risk anyone getting the scent of her blood. Hotaru raised a hand to knock on the door.
'I-I am so sorry Zero'
'You idiot!'
'I am no longer the Yuki that you once knew a-and loved. The innocent naïve human Yuki that you knew is gone because the memories of her dark past destroyed her.'
Hugging herself she covered her mouth to stifle a sob before she knocked on the door. Thankfully Raven's roommate was out fangirling over the night class so it was her best friend that opened the door to the sight of Hotaru barely holding back tears before she dragged her into the empty room.
"I'm being a total baka about this aren't I?" she admitted leaning against Raven as they laid on the single bed half her body hanging off.
"No you aren't Hota" Raven gave her a one armed hug.
"Ugh this is stupid. Even if they suspect it's me they can't prove it thanks to Usa-mama's magic" Hotaru sat up wiping the tear stains off her face with her left hand before absentmindedly tugging at the moonstone pendant around her neck in frustration and swinging her legs around so that they almost rested on the floor. She lent a hand to Raven to help her sit up. Raven frowned at the sight of Hotaru's walls going up once more but knew that she wasn't going to get anything out of the saturnian girl when she acted like this and decided that a change in conversation topic was in order.
"So how were the day class fanatics" she smirked remembering all of the tales of the day class fangirls that Hotaru would regale her with.
"Oh god I almost felt sorry for Zero. It's like they've actually gotten a hundred times worse in the past year since I left" Hotaru chuckled remembering the frivolous antics that Zero had to deal with "still I guess it's payback for all the times he ditched guardian duties to take naps after classes."
"Ok I still can't believe it, did one of the day class girls actually tried to climb the walls to the night class dormitories just to deliver chocolates?" Raven asked causing Hotaru to burst out laughing.
"Yeah she did. I kind of felt sorry for her, she looked so terrified when Zero told her off" Hotaru's chuckles slowed down and she smiled softly thankful that Raven always knew what she needed.
They spent the rest of the time laughing over various stories of Hotaru's time here at Cross Academy as Yuki Cross. After about half an hour they could hear the loud footsteps and shrieks of a stampede of teenage girls and Hotaru happily shot out of the room before Raven's roommate appeared thanking Raven for cheering her up and saying that she would see Raven in the morning. Entering her room once again however she was greeted by a brunette tackling her.
"Yuki is that really you?!"
At those words the purple haired girl froze before registering that it was Yori her best friend. A nostalgic smile appeared on her face for a split second before she gently pried the distraught girl off of her.
"I'm sorry I don't know who this Yuki is. I'm Hotaru Tomoe your new roommate I hope we can be good friends" the rehearsed words spilt from her scarlet lips as she gave a small bow to her old friend.
At this Yori froze in shock before returning the bow, she forced her tears back furious that she had mixed this poor girl up with her best friend.
"I'm so sorry it's just you look so much like her sorry. My name is Sayori Wakaba but please call me Yori" she apologised.
"It's no problem I get told I look like a lot of people although it is nice that you didn't immediately compare me to Sadako but with purple hair" she joked masking inner turmoil with humour as she gave the poor girl a hug.
"Sadako?" Yori asked.
"I guess you're not much of a fan of horror movies are you?" Hotaru smirked mischievously and slung an arm around Yori before dragging her into their room so they wouldn't block the hallway "well that is about to change my new friend because I absolutely love them and if it is the last thing I ever do I will corrupt you like so many others."
With that they spent the rest of the night talking about their favourite movies and books and Hotaru couldn't stop herself from bursting out into peals of laughter after Yori went on a full five-minute long rant about how Kili and Fili shouldn't have died because they were the best characters in the Hobbit. Later that night as she quietly slipped into a simple cotton nightgown getting ready for bed she stiffened when Yori's soft voice broke the comfortable silence.
"I'm sorry for mixing you up with my friend Yuki. It's just… she was the headmaster's daughter and my best friend in fact she used to be my roommate but… she disappeared at the end of last year without a trace. No one's been able to find her and to be honest I'm terrified for her… I'm sorry I shouldn't be burdening you with my worries we just met after all" Yori gave a teary smile holding back tears which made Hotaru against her better judgement cross the room and give her a hug. It was never in the plan for her to contact Yori ever again even if she did miss her best friend. She was just there to get the mission over with.
'Lately there have been multiple youma sightings near Cross Academy. Sailor Saturn, you and Raven are going to be stationed there for the next year to take care of them.'
'B-But your majesty you can't be serious!'
'I'm sorry Raven, Hotaru but at the moment you two are the only people that we can spare who can purify youmas.'
'Its ok Raven… I'll go your majesty. I can't let innocent civilians get hurt just because I'm too scared to face the past right?'
"I'm sure that she's fine and she misses you too" she breathed softly into Yori's ear before plastering on a bright smile and telling her good night as she crawled into bed. As she turned on her side facing the wall she missed Yori's slightly suspicious gaze as the brunette told her sweet dreams.
Red

On white
White snow
This red is blood
There's so much blood
'-mmy why can't I go outside?'
'You need to stay here Firefly where its safe. Outside the palace people will only treat you with suspicion because of your destiny until you pass on the mantle of Sailor Saturn on to your daughter.'
'MONSTER!'
"Please save my daughter I will do anything you want!"
"Miss Kaori why do I have to take this medicine?"
"CHIBIUSA!"
A glaive dropped silently to the ground
'I don't regret this sacrifice'
"Zero! Stop scowling you're going to give little kids nightmares"
"Zero what will you do if I become a vampire"
"-become my lover Yuki"
"-will keep on running so that you can live Zero"
'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!'
Hotaru shot up quickly out of breathe and clutched at her chest as she tried to calm her racing heart tears streaming down her face which she desperately tried to scrub away. It seemed that the her usual stones to help with nightmares weren't working as well considering she was so close to the source of them. Her amethyst eyes quickly scanned the soft sleeping figure in the bed next to hers and realised that it was Yori not Raven. Right she was at Cross Academy she laid back down on the bed with a groan at the realisation. Staring up at the ceiling she couldn't force herself to go back to sleep and glancing at her bedside clock it was still 3 o'clock in the morning. She knew that Raven understood she was going through a rough time but the swangirl would still try to murder her if she woke her up at this hour and Raven had a still unknown roommate so she wouldn't be able to just barge into her friends room in the middle of the night when she had a nightmare like she did at home.
Deciding that then next best thing would be to go downstairs and have a glass of milk and blood tablets she swung her legs off the bed and quietly slipped her feet into her warm brown ugg boots. Crossing over to the door she winced when it started creaking and cast a small silencing spell on it so that Yori wouldn't wake up. Tiptoeing down the hallway the brisk cool morning air gave her goose bumps as she traversed through the halls down towards the dormitory kitchen. Regardless of the inhumane hour the kitchen was almost always empty as most students preferred just to go to the mess hall and eat the food available there rather than cook their own. In fact in all her years at Cross Academy the only time that it was used by people other than Zero who in her adopted family was the only one who could actually cook was in preparation for St Xocolatl's Day when various screaming fangirls would enthusiastically try hundreds of recipes to create the perfect chocolate for the night class students. It was a pity some of their creations actually looked amazing but the night class rarely accepted seeing as most of the aristocratic vampires rarely ate anything when they weren't keeping up appearances around humans.
Shuffling down the hallway Hotaru raised her left hand to massage her temples in an attempt to stave off a headache due to the flickering fluorescent lights. Downstairs in the kitchen she tiredly opened the fridge and retrieved a carton of milk. She then scowled at the tiny yellow faded label with the word glasses scrawled on it in marker plastered on the corner of a small cupboard hanging on the wall above her head. Groaning she braced herself and went on tiptoes her fingertips brushed the silver coloured handle and barely managed to swing the door open. Straining her eyes she swore when she realised that most of the cups had been pushed to the back of the cupboard and scanned the room for a chair. Thankfully there was a wooden stool located in the corner of the room and she dragged it over and climbed on top of it. Unfortunately regardless of the small addition in height she still couldn't reach a cup and once more went on tiptoe her right hand gripping the countertop below her for support straining to get hold of a single cup.
"You know you shouldn't be wandering around this late at night."
Hotaru let loose several more curses as she toppled off of the stool and landed in a heap on the floor. Gingerly rubbing her left arm which she had thrust forward in an attempt to stall her fall she looked up at an unfamiliar attractive young man with ashy brown hair and hazel eyes smirking at her fallen form.
"Language miss uh-"
"Tomoe. Hotaru Tomoe. I guess its pretty early huh" she muttered ignoring the hand he extended to help her up as she grabbed the countertop and hauled herself to her feet.
"Oh you're one of the new students right? You should know this school is pretty strict about wondering around at night. Wouldn't want a pretty young thing like yourself getting hurt due to lack of proper supervision" he smirked as he reached up behind her and easily retrieved a mug from the tall cupboard.
"Don't worry about me pretty boy I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself" she winked playfully a smirk crossing her face for a split second as she accepted the mug thankfully although she couldn't stop herself from cursing his height, seriously he was even taller than Zero.
"Besides won't you get in trouble too for being up so early" she asked as she crossed the room over to the microwave to warm her milk the almost silent room filled with the annoying beeps of the machine.
"I'm sure old Cross won't mind but I think it would be best if you returned to your room. You can take the mug with you I won't tell anyone about this escapade but don't make it a habit" he replied watching her carefully.
"Deal thanks uh-"
"Don't worry I'm just your friendly neighbourhood passing stranger here to make sure you don't get in trouble. Just be thankful it was me and not Yagari or Zero they tend to get really pissed off when they find students wondering around at night" he casually shook off her thanks before shooing her out of the kitchen after she finished warming the milk.
Suspicious eyes followed her out of the room as the friendly smirk immediately slipped off his face to be replaced with a scowl. He didn't trust that girl as far as he could throw her, she seemed a bit too much like that Kuran princess for it to be a coincidence and he wouldn't let her manipulate Zero anymore. Outside of the room the same thing happened with Hotaru as she turned her head back to the kitchen with narrowed eyes. Her senses screamed at her that boy was not to be trusted not yet at least. His aura told her that he was a vampire hunter not afraid to exterminate her if he found out what she truly was. It seemed that Cross Academy had changed more than she realised. Taking small sips of milk she plodded back up to her bedroom and stifled a couple more yawns and decided to deal with this new information in the morning. The mysterious boy had a point it was way too early to be up even if she was famished. Reaching her room she took two blood tablets and drained the last of the quickly cooling milk before falling asleep once more.
Hotaru woke up grumbling when the harsh morning light hit her face as Yori opened up the curtains to open the window and let the cool fresh morning air into the room.
"Its too early to be up" she moaned as she turned over refusing to get up.
At this Yori came over and tore the quilt off of her ignoring Hotaru's curses although she was slightly curious as to where the young girl came across some of her more creative insults.
"Rise and shine Hotaru its time for your first day of classes at Cross Academy!" she sang playfully as she pushed the purple haired teen off the bed.
"Fine meanie" she pouted tiredly as she trotted over to the wardrobe and extracted a fresh clean uniform and a fluffy towel before she went into the ensuite bathroom. That was another new change she noticed before she normally just used the bathroom in the headmasters quarters because it was so much nicer than the shared bathrooms that the girls normally used but it seemed that he finally listened to some of her suggestions and installed a couple of ensuite bathrooms to prevent some of the more violent fights between girls. Of course as she stood under the hot water cascading down she was thankful for it as she scrubbed at marred skin, fingers tracing over multiple scars and marks. It would be too much trouble to have to explain some of the more horrific scars that covered her body. Getting out of the shower she turned on the hairdryer which she had borrowed from Yori and used a quick spell to dry her hair instantly leaving the hairdryer as background noise as explanation for when she got out. She swiftly changed into the school uniform and paused at the sight of herself in the clothes that she had honestly believed she would never wear again. Hotaru then pulled her long purple hair into a side French braid so that it wouldn't get in the way for the day's events. Hopefully a change in hairstyle would prevent too many people from calling her out on her likeness to Yuki.
A quick knock on the door broker her out of her thoughts as Yori called out for her to hurry up so that they could go downstairs to get breakfast. She quickly replied that she already knew the way to the food hall thanks to her exploring the day and told Yori to go on ahead without her. Ten minutes later Hotaru wondered down the hall to find Raven so that they could go down to get breakfast together. Knocking on the door she barged in to be met with the horrific sound of Raven retching into the toilet in the ensuite bathroom.
"Raven are you okay?" she called out concernedly.
"Ugh" Raven groaned looking up from the toilet bowl "I'm fine Firefly the teleportation sickness finally kicked in. I'm sorry looks like I'll have to miss the first day of classes." Quickly crossing over to her sick friend Hotaru rubbed her back gently as she retched once more before escorting her back to her bed and tucking her in. She conjured up a bucket and placed it next to her bed before reaching into her subspace pocket and pulled out a crystal phial containing a potion to cure her friend. Hotaru helped her friend to drink the potion to help her feel better. It was mixed with a dreamless sleep potion to speed up the process and would fully kick in after 2 hours. It seemed that Hotaru would have to face her first day of classes by herself.
After making sure that Raven was finally asleep and resting Hotaru quietly exited the room wishing her friend a swift recovery. She knew that teleportation sickness could be absolutely horrible remembering a couple of instances from the silver millennium before she managed to help Ami to create a cure for it in her second life. Paying attention to her grumbling stomach she quickly made her way down to the food hall for breakfast.
THIS IS A LINE BREAK
"Hey you're Zero Kiryu correct?"
Zero was picking at his food with his chopsticks as he glared sullenly at the chipped and scratched wooden table top now and then forcing himself to take a bite of rice and egg when he heard a soft musical voice interrupting his thoughts. He looked up into a curious pair of amethyst eyes staring at him from beneath her long dark lashes.
"Sorry" she smiled nervously scratching the back of neck with her left hand "I didn't mean to disturb you it's just I'm new here and all of the other tables are packed. Is it all right if I sit here?"
Taking his silence as a yes she sat down across from him gracefully eating her rice with a pair of chopsticks. She raised a dainty hand to her mouth before letting out a harsh grating cough.
"I apologise, my health is quite fragile and I haven't taken my meds yet and I think I caught something from my friend Raven. Thanks for letting me sit here. Raven's sick and the table my roommate is sitting at is full. You were the only one I recognised from the introduction the headmaster gave us" slipped out of her crimson lips softly hesitant to break the fragile silence surrounding them. Reaching into the bag next to her she pulled out a single tablet and popped into her mouth before gulping down her sweet orange juice quickly. Swiftly finishing her meal she gathered her things, put what remained of her dishes on the trolley in the corner of the food hall end exited silently.
Outside looking up at the warm sunshine she let a soft true smile grace her face.
ZERO! Why are you doing sitting here all by yourself you big jerk!
'Thanks Zero" she whispered gratefully before frowning as a bell rang signalling it was time to get to class and began the slow walk towards the classroom not looking forward to it at all.
