BOYS WILL BE BOYS
Screamin Jay Hawkins - I Put A Spell On You
I love you anyhow
And I don't care
If you don't want me
I'm yours right now
A/N: I love this song so much; so raw and perfect. If you haven't heard it, give it a try.
Fitz was nowhere to be seen.
This made it easy for Edison to slip into Olivia's room. Once he had been released from the bunker, he had gone home to change as his clothes had been covered in dirt. He knew the reporters would be waiting outside and he wanted to look like a leader…one the public deserved.
So after pushing past them, he was met with another obstacle; the guards.
He had spent almost ten minutes arguing and having to point out the fact that he was her boyfriend and soon to be fiancé. The taller one, Tom, had been determined to keep him away but the shorter one, with the name tag Hal, soon gave in. That was all it took for him to push past them and enter the room.
His eyes saddened at the sight of her frail form. Countless wires surrounded her as several machines circled her bed.
Drawing in a deep breath, he braced his shoulders and strode over to her bed and sat down on the space beside her. Her hand now firmly grasped in his as he looked down at the woman he intended on spending the rest of his life with. She was perfect. She knew how to handle the press and the public loved her. She was made to be a senator's wife.
The engagement ring he planned to give her in college had been burning a hole in his pocket. Edison was all too ready to marry her but he had been hesitant, waiting for her to give him an opening.
When she accepted his offer to escort him to the gala, he found the night to be perfect. He had intended on popping the question and finally having the ring on her finger. Only now he became aware of how cold her hand was. The only indication that she was alive was the beeping of the machine.
After a few minutes of listening to it, the silence was interrupted with the buzzing of his phone. He dared one glance at her before finally answering. "Hello?" he grated with a rasped voice.
"Senator, we need you back" Governor Reston announced.
"I'm indisposed" he replied and let go of Olivia's hand. The weak state of her frightened him so much that he stood and distanced himself. He now stood by the window, staring outside at the large crowd forming.
The governor huffed over the phone, aggravating Edison further. "I don't mean to sound insincere but have to remember that the world doesn't stop moving because your girlfriend is in hospital" he sniped.
"Watch how you speak to me" Edison growled.
"Ten minutes Senator"
And with that, the call ended.
Running one frustrated hand over his face, Edison grumbled several curses under his breath. He then looked towards his Olivia and sighed. Drawing up whatever courage he could master, he made his way towards her.
She looked so…drained.
Leaning down, he pressed his lips to her forehead and then trailed down, intending on pressing a more firmly kiss on her lips. Only as he inched closer, he was soon interrupted.
"Senator Davis"
He snapped up and turned, his eyes widening as the bathroom door was opened. There at the doorway stood none another than…
"Mr. President" he grated and was suddenly torn between drawing up defences or remaining intimidated.
To say that Fitz was angry would be an understatement. Each feature was etched with his rage and it was so overwhelming that his hands had balled up into fists. He knew he had to remain composed so he tightly pressed them to his side.
Being a politician meant masking your feelings. This skill made it easy for both men to depict a picture
Regardless of the President being able to hide his rage, it wasn't as easy to keep it away from his sniped tone. "How did you get in here?" he demanded.
Edison narrowed his eyes at the clipped words. "I have been seeing Olivia again. I'm all she's got" he replied sternly and then defensively crossed his arms.
"I'm here" Fitz found the words fall out before he could stop himself.
The curiosity was piqued as the Senator looked at his commander in chief. This time he was really looking at him and finally seeing what he had been blinded to. Edison was suddenly thinking about the guards outside; why so many members of the press were outside; why his President was still wearing clothes from the night before; how he was now moving towards his woman. "Yes you are" Edison finally muttered, following Fitz with sharp inquisitive eyes. "Why are you here?" he continued.
"Olivia has been good to the White House. What happened was a – a tragedy and I am doing everything I can to help" he relied hoarsely, forcing himself to focus on his main priority. "She has been a good friend to…us" Fitz added quietly once he was back on the armchair by her side. He didn't want Edison anywhere near Olivia but there wasn't much he could do. He would just have to wait until he leaves before shouting at his guards. Obviously he needed better men who would actually listen to what he had to say.
As Edison watched how his President seemed to ignore him and focus on Olivia, he cleared his throat. "What did the doctors say?" he asked, making himself announced. Maybe he could use this opportunity to get close to the President.
"She's stable" Fitz answered, wishing that he had never left to go to the bathroom and wishing that he could have Olivia's hand back in his. It was almost painful to not be able to touch her.
Edison grumbled at the lack of attention. "Will she be alright?"
Before he could answer, Fitz welcomed the interruption of the phone ringing. "That should be off" he murmured tautly and hoped that whoever it was on the other line would be able to distract the Senator.
"I know"
From the corner of his eye, he watched as Edison fumbled in his pockets and retrieved the phone. The same number had popped up on the small blue screen, eliciting a groan from him. "I hope I'm not keeping you…" Fitz uttered and discreetly brushed his thumb over Olivia's hand, only to drop it when Edision sharply turned to him.
This time, he could no longer hide how he felt. His frustration now noticeable in his furrowed brows and heavy grimace. "If you insist on sitting by Olivia's side, then maybe Vice President Sally Langston should take over the responsibilities that you seem to be too…distracted to handle" he drawled out and then adorned a sarcastic smile. "Sir"
Fitz had had enough but it surprised them both when Fitz had walked around and grabbed his collar. He stood inches away from Davis' face as a growl erupted through his clenched teeth. "Get. Out" he enunciated, trying to reign back his anger as he untangled his fingers from the grasp. "Or you can have security offer their hand" he barked, oblivious to the door being flung open.
"Boys"
At the sound of the commanding tone, both whipped around. They now faced the unexpected frail figure situated in a wheelchair, parked at the doorway.
"Justice Thornton"
A/N: Oooh…so Verna is there... what do you think about this move? What about Fitz and Edison? Do you wish a punch would have been thrown?
Sorry for the delayed update but my mother just had surgery and I was helping her out. She is much better now but still dependant. I will do my best to keep updating. Thank you all for reviewing. You have all been so welcoming and I am thankful.
