Messy

Okay that is not what he was expecting at all.

Real Feelings Dick is this huge messy thing that he can't really handle.

For five years Dick had been a simple, easy thing. He liked beer and surfing and easy girls.

Simple.

As he tried to be, he'd once said.

It had been a haven when Duncan and Lily and Veronica were always these big messy things that he didn't know how to deal with.

For five years it had been simple and fun and great just Dick and Beaver and him and surfing and girls.

And now Dick was slowly becoming the same kind of mess everyone else was. All messy heart feelings and junk that he was sure Dick had no idea what to do with.

Evident in the desperate tone of his voice and the evacuation he'd just pulled.

Honestly he likes the idea of Mac and Dick. Some sort of balance was achieved when they were civil with each other. Dick was less of a dick and Mac was more bold.

He liked the Mac that she was around Dick more than any other. That Mac, the snarking, blushing thing erased the image of her in that stripped down hotel room.

And he wanted nothing more...well few things more than making that go away.

For the both of them.

He goes into the car and pulls out a couple of towels and his swimming trunks. With a quick look around he decides that he's alone enough and changes right there.

The news hasn't cared about him for months now.

His swimming gear sorted he follows Dick to the lake.

Dick is actively ignoring him and he can't really blame him, after all he'd been a lot more open than he was used to being.

"You're serious about this, about her?" he asks throwing a twig at Dick to pull his attention at him finally.

"So what if I am?" he huffs but won't swim closer.

He feels ridiculous yelling halfway across the god damn lake but if this is what Dick needs to feel some sort of control over the situation he's willing to strain his vocal cords.

"Tonight!" he yells out and Dick starts swimming over like his life depends on it, "Tonight I'm going to-"

A wave of water splashes him right in the face.

"What the hell Dick!" Logan growls sending his own wave over the blonde.

"You guys have been alone all of what ten minutes and you've resorted to a splash fight?" Veronica's voice laughs from behind him. He turns and can see Veronica and Mac standing behind him on the dock.

oh

That makes sense.

Veronica shakes her head before she drops her towel and takes a run off the dock. She pulls out the classic cannon ball manoeuvre she's used to get into pools probably her whole life, at the very least since she was twelve.

His temporarily distracted by Veronica pulling him underwater.

Its junior high pool parties all over again, he's got his arms thrown around Veronica's neck and its this comfortable, familiar thing that he misses.

If nothing had happened, if nothing had changed...if Lily hadn't...if his father hadn't...if Beaver hadn't...

It was way too easy to hear Lily and Duncan splashing around them, her laugh, his heavy voice...

"Come on Ghostworld, it's just water." Dick's voice crashes around him and he looks at the dock and Mac is still standing there, in her shorts and tank top swimming get up, her towel in her hand looking down at Dick in the water.

"So something's going on with Mac and Dick right?" Veronica asks and he looks at her, her blond hair curling in the water, her mouth just above the water line, her eyes narrowed at the scene.

"Why what did she say?" Logan is sure he's doing a shit job of being covert. She eyes him and he knows he's done a shit job. Well there go his hopes of being an international man of mystery,

"Nothing...what did he say?"

"Nothing..."

"Dick no!" Mac's scream pulls their attention away from each other and Dick is standing on the dock, dripping wet, with Mac in his arms. He's swept her up and the smile on his face grabs at him because it's real. Something horribly uncommon now a days.

"He's not..." Veronica whispers next to him.

"He absolutely is."

He expects Dick to toss her off the end of the dock carelessly and laugh and dive in after her.

He doesn't.

He walks off the dock with her in his arms and the screech of sound is cut off by them hitting the water and going down.

"They're coming back up right?" Veronica asks urgently and she ducks under the water and reappears a few feet away, closer to the epicentre of the waves slapping against his skin.

Dick reappears a bright smile on his face and he tugs his arm up above the water and Mac is pulled above the water. He's holding her hand.

"Richard Casablancas you asshole!" Mac's voice blasts out from across the lake but he can hear the laugh in her voice, and he can see the smile break across her face and the blush in her skin and he can't help but notice that she hasn't let go of his hand quite yet.

She likes him.

She likes him back, boyfriend or not and he is going to do everything in his power to make them a proper couple by the end of the weekend.
