Things That Go Bump in the Night
Chapter 6~ Saved by the Joe
"Give them back, you devil-spawn!"
Mariku merely raised an eyebrow, and then put another chip into his mouth, crunching on it loudly, simply to spite me.
"I am not kidding! If you don't give them back this instant, I will make your life hell."
During that instant he still refused to return my darling Doritos.
"You asked for it." I pointed at him dramatically as I backed up towards where I knew there would be a hallway leading up to my room. "Watch your back, you rat bastard. I'm coming for you."
I wasn't, actually, but I just like making people paranoid.
It was late the next evening (or morning, I wasn't really sure) when I awoke once more. (I had slept a whole day, which was weird. But at least I hadn't had to go to school.) I blinked sleepily and stared at the ceiling for a moment, before turning to my right. I bolted up in bed with a loud shriek.
"MARIKU WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY ROOM?!"
"What am I not doing in your room?" he responded.
"An excellent point, my good sir. Please come with me." Raising an eyebrow, he smirked and followed me as I led him to the office adjoining my room, where we proceeded to watch Yu-Gi-Oh! abridged, simply because I can.
Of course, I had seen it way too many times to be good for my mental health, so I just stared at Mariku creepily while mouthing every word the characters said.
His eyebrows shot up at this, and he slowly began to back away.
When we got to the Battle City arc, Mariku began laughing hysterically. "I would. Never help. Them!" he gasped through laughter, banging his hand against the desk.
I carefully scooted the keyboard away from his fist. "Wait a second. You lived in the show… how do you know about 4Kids?!"
"I live in another dimension; not under a rock."
I eyed him.
"Okay, I may have actually just looked them up while you were sleeping," he admitted.
It was about halfway through episode 37 that I fell asleep.
I inferred it was midnight, if not later, but I was too lazy to actually check.
My dreams were plagued with the horrendous sight of chubby British guys with hair oddly similar to Yuugi's.
"Gah! What a fucking bizarre dream!" I exclaimed, jolting awake. Mariku sent a glance my way, to which I blinked at.
"Did you just quote at me?" he asked, giving me a horrified look.
I thought back to the moment. "Holy cheese! I suppose I did!" I returned his stare. "I didn't even mean to, this time!"
At this point, the door opened, and a half-asleep Marik stood in the doorway. "This isn't the bathroom," he muttered.
Mariku and I turned around. I wheeled around in my wheelie chair, like one of those badass villains in the movies, while Mariku merely turned his head.
Marik then proceeded to shriek, like a stereotypically woman who just saw a mouse, and flail his arm at Mariku.
Soon after, we were relocated to the living room. Marik hid behind Yatem, who appeared to be sleeping with his eyes open. Mariku sat on one side of me, and Bakura sat on the floor by my feet, much to his annoyed grumblings.
We didn't even bother waking Millie and Kaiba.
"We draw this court today blah blah blah condemned blah blah blah let the trial begin," I said.
"Get rid of him!" Marik squeaked. "He'll kill us all!"
"You don't know that," I retorted. "He could be a nice guy!"
"I do, actually, know that. Also HE IS NOT GOOD NOR WILL HE EVER BE!" Marik ranted.
I groaned. "Stop yelling. Your whiny voice is giving me a headache."
Mariku and Bakura snickered as Marik glared at me.
"But he's evil!" Marik exclaimed.
"He's just… misunderstood!" I hugged the tanned Yami. "Besides…" I looked at Marik. "You created him!"
Marik opened his mouth to say something. He then closed it and looked around guiltily. He then shook Yatem.
"Pharaoh, Umbrë's being mean to me," Marik whined.
It was then that I noticed Bakura was staring angrily at Mariku and I. "Are you going to let that psycho go, or are you going to continue squishing him with your boobs?" he growled. He must've been pretty pissed, having been woken up for such a silly reason as this.
"I don't mind," Mariku said, wrapping an arm around my waist. He squeezed my butt and I squeaked.
Bakura made a sound deep in his throat a jumped up, smacking Mariku. He immediately let go of me, and I jumped back, afraid I would be hit.
Ava and Yami dragged me away from the two fighting yamis, and we, along with Marik, jumped behind the other couch, and began staring wearily at them.
"WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE?!" Every head slowly turned to face Millie, who was glaring at all of us.
Mariku and Bakura actually gulped and backed away.
"It was all them!" Marik cried, taking refuge behind Ava and me, who also pointed towards the two who were previously fighting.
Millie slowly began walking towards Mariku and Bakura, who looked at each other and in a moment decided to have a truce.
Shortly thereafter, they ran for their lives.
Only to find Millie in front of them. "Florence, do you know what happens when you wake me up?" Millie gave him a sadistic grin. "And Steve! I didn't know you would be joining us for this conversation!" Millie leered at Mariku who, now composed, raised an eyebrow.
"Bring it on."
Yelling loudly, Yatem, Ava, Marik, and I quickly escaped the room.
From inside the room we heard screams and the sound of a chainsaw. It was Millie laughing at the end that gave us shivers, however.
We all huddled together, and looked up, horrified, as Millie entered the room covered in blood.
"The deed is done," was all she said.
Luckily for us, today, we had no school. Apparently a wall had been blown up and they needed to repair it.
I sent a pointed stare at Bakura, who looked triumphant as he heard that. He looked over at me with a demonic leer, which caused me to grin widely in return.
Marik, who sat next to us, got caught up in our smirking, and joined the party.
"We should totally go to the beach," Ava said, walking in with a bag of Doritos. She sat next to me, and we both ate from it- what can I say? I'm not a bitch all the time! - as we pondered this suggestion. During this time, Bakura got up and left, to do whatever fluffies do.
"We should play a children's card game," I commented. Marik and Yatem stared at me strangely, while Ava sighed, and Mariku chuckled.
"If we do, we are so going to the beach after," Ava told me.
"I don't know, those children's card games can last a pretty long time," Mariku commented, playing off of what I said.
Whipping out decks of Duel Monsters cards dramatically, both Ava and I drew five cards.
(If you do not want to be bored by my lame ass duel, please skip this part ._.)
My cards were Alector, Sovereign of Birds, The White Stone of Legend, Element Magician, United We Stand, and Creature Swap.
After a short round of rock paper scissors, I went first, drawing a card, which turned out to be Dark Jeroid.
I set Element Magician and ended my turn.
Ava drew a card. She set three cards, then placed a monster in face-down defense position.
I drew my next card- Gift of the Mystical Elf- before placing both that and Dark Jeroid on the field.
Dark Jeroid, I played in attack position. Due to its effect, it lost 800 ATK, leaving it at 400. I switched Element Magician to attack position before activating Creature Swap.
Dark Jeroid switched to her side of the field, and I gained control of her face down monster, Gravitic Orb.
I attacked her with Element Magician, but she countered with Book of Moon, which flipped my Magician into face-down defense position.
I ended my turn.
Immediately after the beginning of her turn, during the Standby phase, Ava activated Heart of the Underdog. At the draw phase, she drew a card, then she frowned and added it to her hand.
If she was unable to activate the effect, then she must not have drawn a Normal monster.
My point was proven when she placed her card in the trap/spell zone face-down.
She placed Dark Jeroid into defense and then summoned Drillago. Ava attacked my Element Magician, which was destroyed.
She then ended her turn.
I drew a card, which was revealed to be Mirror Force. I played that face-down, then I special summoned Alector.
His effect allowed me to special summon him if my opponents two monsters were of the same attribute, which they were. They were both Dark monsters.
Ava flipped over a trap, Threatening Roar, which was the one she had played last turn. I grumbled some incoherent nonsense, which not even I could understand, and ended my turn.
Ava drew a card, not using Heart of the Underdog.
She only switched Drillago to defense, then ended her turn.
I drew Exchange.
I "'hmm'ed", then flipped Gravitic Orb up. Its effect allowed me to change the battle positions of Ava's monsters. That meant that her defense position monsters were switched to attack position. She made a traumatized face, which I grinned at.
I attacked the downgraded Dark Jeroid with Gravitic Orb, causing her life points to go down to 3300. I attacked Drillago with Alector, and her life points rested at 2500.
She placed her monsters in the graveyard. Then she peeked at her face-down card, and groaned. It must have been something she could have used. I decided to keep an eye on it, and ended my turn.
She drew a card, then set it in the trap/spell zone, and ended her turn without summoning a monster.
The card I drew was the Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
I decided not to do anything and ended my turn. Might as well give Ava a fighting chance.
She set the card she drew as a spell or trap again. She then ended her turn.
I drew the card Raging Flame Sprite.
I set the monster The White Stone of Legend, then ended my turn.
Ava drew a card, then gasped and played it on the field, revealing Nanobreaker.
She activated one of her face-downs, Fiendish Chain, and equipped it to Alector. This took away his effect. She then attacked Alector, activating the trap Prideful Roar.
This allowed her to pay LP in the difference between attacks. Her monster gained that plus 300 points.
She paid 800 LP, bringing her to 1700, then attacked Alector.
Both he and Fiendish Chain went to the graveyard. I lost 300 LP, which left me at 3600.
"I'm sorry, Ava, but now you have to die," I said after she ended her turn. She gulped.
I drew the card Snowman Eater.
I then placed it in face-down defense position. I then changed Gravitic Orb to defense as well and ended my turn.
Ava, yet again, se the card she drew. She then attacked my Gravitic Orb.
"I end my turn," she muttered, glaring at the cards in her hand.
I drew the card The Seal of Orichalcos next, and, grinning, placed it on the field.
I ended my turn.
She drew a card, then laughed evilly, before playing the field spell card Yami on the field and killing my Orichalcos.
As I paced the card in the grave, I stared directly at her, saying, "Fuck you, fuck your children, fuck your grandchildren, and fuck the whole family."
At this point, Bakura decided it would be a great time to walk in again. He snorted as I began swearing like a truck driver. "Card games: serious business," he said.
Ava ignored him, and attacked my face-down Snowman Eater.
She grumbled at me as her Nanobreaker was finally destroyed, then ended her turn. Ava also lost 300 life points because her Nanobreaker had 1600 attack, while mine had 1900 defense.
She was now at 1400 life points.
The next card I drew was the Dark Magician.
I summoned Raging Flame Sprite and attacked Ava directly, as was one of the cards' effect. She lost a whopping 100 LP, bringing her down to 1300. Due to its effect, the Sprite gained 1000 ATK. I ended my turn.
Ava set the spell or trap that she drew, then ended her turn.
I drew the card Kaibaman and placed it on the field before attacking once more with the Sprite. Ava was now down to 300 LP. The Sprite's attack rose again to 2100. I ended my turn.
Ava sighed in relief, and played the Swords of Revealing Light card that she had just drawn. She ended her turn.
I drew the card Invitation to a Dark Sleep. First off, I flipped Kaibaman face up, then tribute it to summon the Blue-Eyes. I could do that because of the card's effect. I felt like dancing as I saw Ava's eye twitch.
Since the BEWD was Specially Summoned, I was also able to summon a second monster.
First, I activated Girt of the Mystical Elf, which gave me 300 LP for every monster I controlled. I controlled 4, so that gave me 1200 points. I was now up to 4800.
I then tributed Snowman Eater and the White Stone of Legend to summon Dark Magician.
Due to the Stone of Legend's effect, I was able to go through my deck and add a second Blue-Eyes to my hand.
I then grinned cheekily and ended my turn.
The first turn of Swords of Revealing Light ended.
Ava drew a card. She played it in face-down defense, and activated the trap card she just seemed to realize was there.
Needle Ceiling.
It destroyed all three of my super-awesome monsters. I almost burst into tears, but controlled myself, and just flipped Ava off instead.
She ended her turn.
I drew the card Magical Dimension. I growled and ended my turn.
Second turn of Swords of Revealing Light ended.
Ava drew a card, then simply ended her turn.
I drew the card Guardian Eatos, then ended my turn.
Third turn of Swords of Revealing Light ended. The card was destroyed, which gave me some satisfaction.
Ava drew a card Break the Magical Warrior, and immediately summoned it, afterwards flipping her face-down card up; Giant Germ.
They both got power-ups from Yami, which was still on the field.
If they attacked, I could use Mirror Force, I thought, before realizing that Breaker could destroy my card. And destroy it he did.
I was directly attacked by both of her monsters. My life points went down to 1800, and my eyes widened. FML. This is what I get for trying to give Ava a fighting chance!
Ava ended her turn, and I quickly drew a card- Darkknight Parshath.
I couldn't do anything. I was fucked. I played Magical Dimension, hoping to bluff my way through this turn. I smirked widely at her, hoping to through her off.
Ava drew a card, which she set in the trap/spell zone.
She looked at my grin, before biting her lip and ending her turn.
I don't know how much longer I can keep this bluff up…
I looked at the Spellbinding Circle I had drawn, and played it on the field. I then ended my turn.
Ava drew a card, and clenched her fists, looking down at my set cards. She once more ended her turn.
I drew the card Gorz the Emissary of Darkness. I gritted my teeth and ended my turn.
Ava played the Element Magician she drew, then bit her lip, and decided against attacking.
Either I was a better bluffer than I thought, or Ava was a real wimp. I was more inclined to believe the later.
I drew a card, praying for something I could use… And I only got Ancient Crimson Ape…
I ended my turn.
Ava just shrugged and ended her turn after drawing. She was toying with me! That bitch!
I honestly just gave up on the faith right then. I doubted I would win. Then I drew the card Shining Angel.
I looked at it hopefully, then played it face-down on the field.
Ava ended her turn after drawing with attacking yet again. What was she planning?
I drew the next card, Bowganian. I played that, also in face-down defense. I then ended my turn.
Ava drew, then ended her turn.
I drew Angel 07. I frowned, before finally deciding. I sacrificed both of my monsters on the field, to summon the second BEWD in attack position. Out of sheer desperation, I equipped United We Stand to it, bring its ATK up to 3800.
I attacked Giant Germ. Ava activated Enchanted Javelin, bringing her life points up to 1700. I ended my turn.
Ava drew a card and placed it in face-down defense. She changed Element Magician to defense. Her turn was ended.
Since she had left Breaker in ATK position, she was most likely trying to set me up for a trap, which made me seriously nervous.
I drew Book of Moon, and placed it face-down on the field. I then attacked Element Magician, which was destroyed.
I ended my turn.
Ava drew a monster card, then set it on the field. She ended her turn.
I drew the card White-Horned Dragon, then, gambling, I played Book of Moon, and attacked her Breaker, which was now set on the field. It was sent to the graveyard. I ended my turn.
She drew, then ended her turn.
I picked up Enchanted Javelin, and placed it on the field. I attacked a monster, which turned out to be Mystical Elf. It was sent to the graveyard.
Ava drew a card, then laughed. I looked at her nervously. What did she draw?!
She didn't do anything.
I drew Milla the Temporal Magician. I summoned her in attack position.
Her effect allowed me to look at a set card of Ava's. I chose to look at the monster she had.
It turned out to be Wall of Illusion.
I chose then to activate Magical Dimension. I sacrificed Milla, and was able to summon Invitation to a Dark Sleep from my hand. It also allowed me to destroy Wall of Illusion.
She put her hands up, as if accepting defeat.
…
…
…
Did I just win?
Bakura clapped mockingly from where he sat. "Nice job. That was extraordinarily tedious." I flipped him off as I collected my cards.
"I swear, this game is jinxed!" Ava yelled, shaking her fists at the cards. I made the sad puppy dog eyes as I cleaned up the cards.
"It's not your fault you don't believe in the Heart of the Cards." I rubbed the cards on my face, hugging them. "Like Bakura!" I stared at him.
He raised an eyebrow. "Heart of the Cards is a load of bullshit." He stood up and walked away.
"And that's why Bakura can't win without sending anyone to the Shadow Realm!" I called after him.
"Shut up!" he yelled back, sounding pissed.
"NEVERR!" I cried, shaking my fist at the empty air. I then proceeded to stare at my cards. Maybe HoC was bullshit. "This is Dark Necrofear," I proclaimed, taking a card from the deck I had lent Ava. "I-I-It's Dark Necrofear!"
At this point, Marik and Yatem returned from grocery shopping (they had left sometime earlier, while Ava and I were still dueling), and saw me latched onto Ava, crying hysterically.
"I'm sorry I doubted you HoC!" I sniffled. I then turned and grinned creepily at Yatem, tears still rolling down my face. "Hey, Yatem, wanna duel?" Everyone in the room raised an eyebrow at this. "Ava can play too!"
"Hell no! I'm not going to play with you, I keep losing!" She then pried me off of her and walked away.
"That's because you don't believe in the Heart of the Cards. LIKE BAKURA!" I called out.
"Shut up!" he roared back. He then proceeded to rant and rave about how stupid HoC was.
"And I thought Friendship speeches were annoying." I attempted to block my ears.
Mariku laughed as he walked past me. Mariku entered the kitchen, and there was an abrupt silence.
Then, all of a sudden, I heard the slice of knives, as they were pulled out of the block.
Running into the kitchen, Ava, Yatem, and Marik raced after me. I gaped as I saw Bakura holding a knife, attempting to cut off Mariku's hair.
I saw a picture on the floor, and made a mental note to pick it up later. Then my eyes travelled back over to the main action, as Mariku's hair began falling to the floor. "You're getting hair all over the floor!" I stomped my foot.
Bakura looked up guiltily and dropped Mariku before placing the knife on the counter behind him. Mariku had half of his hair still standing, but the other half was only a couple inches long, and actually not gravity defying any longer.
"Aww! You made his hair susceptible to gravity!" I sniffed and huggled Mariku. "Let's get you a new hairstyle, Mariku."
I sent a glare at Bakura, whose face shifted between anger and confusion.
Mariku wrapped an arm around my waist, making me slightly uncomfortable, and we headed off to the bathroom.
Mariku began his new life with three inch long hair. His hair was styled similarly to Bakura's hair, but without the Jamaican braids. Bakura couldn't seem to get them out, and it amused me to no end.
For the rest of the day, I kept trying to touch his hair, going so far as to jump on Mariku's back and grab at his hair. I'm pretty sure I've officially made him paranoid.
It was only fair. After all, I had warned him earlier that he would have to watch out for me.
CZR: Hi… remember when I said last chapter that my update time went to hell? Yeah, that was a fond memory. I've been really busy lately, and I've gotten into a lot of different fandoms, but I really wanted to write more for this story, so…
Bakura: I'm actually really confused as to why you are updating this story.
CZR: I am as confused as you! Plus it's 2 in the morning and I really should have gone to sleep *Dozes off*
Bakura/Marik: *Sweatdrop*
Yuugi: Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't belong to CZR.
CZR: Thanks to all of you guys who have stuck with me:

I don't know when I'll next update, but I promise, I won't abandon this story (just put it on hiatus for long periods of time…?)
Also, I'm sorry that the bulk of this chapter was a lame card game... -_- (I actually have edited some of the previous chapters. Not a lot, but just some formatting errors that bugged me.)
