Chapter four- Meet The Harts
"Em, Matty, time to get up." Quinn Hart yelled to her children from the hallway, as she ran around trying to get ready. Her husband, Joe, walked out of the bedroom and smiled at his wife of 18 years.
"Q, the kids are old enough to get up on their own, you know that right?" Quinn just gave him a look and smirked.
"You have met Matthew haven't you?" She laughed as she put her earring in.
"He's not that bad. A little lazy, and incredibly messy, but he can get himself up for school. He's 14 now."
"He's more than a little lazy. The boy could sleep through an earthquake…or another one. Remember when we were in San Francisco and that earthquake struck? He didn't even know it had happened. Emmaline was a nervous wreck, and he just slept." Quinn looked at her watch. They only had 55 minutes to get ready and get the kids to school. "What's going on? Why are they ignoring me?"
"Because they're teenagers and you're their overbearing mother?" Joe joked and Quinn glared at him. "Lina will be up and ready in plenty time. Matty will be up with literally like 7 minutes to get ready, like he always has done."
"Don't worry mom, I'm up and just going into the shower." Emmaline said, emerging from her room with a robe on. She smiled at her dad and hurried into the bathroom.
"He'd better hurry. It's his first day of High School. He needs to make a good impression." Quinn complained. She looked at her watch and sighed. "Screw it!" Joe just laughed and walked into their bedroom to get ready for work.
"MOM! GET OUT!" Joe heard Matty scream.
"OH MY GOD! I'M SO SORRY!" Quinn shouted and then Joe heard the door slam shut. She walked into their bedroom, looking very red faced. She saw the look on Joe's face. She held her hand up and pointed at Joe. "Don't. Even. Say. It!" She said walking into their en suite.
"Well at least he's up." Joe called after his wife, laughing hysterically.
Ten minutes or so later, Quinn and Joe were sitting at the kitchen table, Quinn still very quiet, and Joe still sniggering every so often. They heard footsteps coming down the stairs and Quinn looked at her coffee cup as if it was the most interesting thing in the world. Matthew walked in wearing a pair of jean shorts and a Marvel comics t-shirt.
"Morning." He said awkwardly.
"Yeah, morning." Quinn said back. Joe just started laughing even more. "Joe! Stop" Quinn whispered. "Okay, Matty we need to talk about what happened this morning."
"No, we really don't!" He said, eyes wide and hands thrown up in defence.
"We do. Now sit down." Quinn said. Joe just cringed. They really didn't need to have the talk with him. "Now Matthew, I know that your body is changing and you have these urges…"
"Mom, please stop." Matthew begged.
"What you were doing is a very natural thing. People have been doing it for as long as there have been people. So please don't be embarrassed."
"I wasn't really embarrassed until you started talking and now I just want to crawl under a rock and stay there for the rest of my life."
"You and me both son." Joe said, putting his coffee cup in the sink.
"Mom, I get that you want to have this conversation but I am 14, I'm growing up, You need to start giving me some privacy."
"Don't worry, I'll knock from now on. Now you better get your sister, we're gonna be late getting you guys in, and I've got that read-through this morning."
"Cool, I'll go get her." Matt said, running out of the kitchen and up the stairs.
Roughly twenty minutes later, they were in school, Matthew was walking down the hall with his friends, Mercy Chang and Zendaya Puckerman.
"So she just barged into your room?" Zendaya asked.
"Without knocking?" Mercy asked.
"Yup, and she caught me and now I cannot look her in the eyes without feeling like my face is on fire."
"Well, at least now she'll give you a little bit of privacy." Zendaya joked.
"Not even funny!"
"Aww you poor baby. It's not that bad." Mercy said hugging her best friend. Ever since the age of 5, when she and her family, and Matt and his were living in LA, the pair were inseparable. Mercy had a crush on him from the age of 11, but she never told him. Eventually she got over him, but there was nothing that could come between them.
"Anyway, are you guys signing up for Glee club?" Zendaya asked.
"Nah, I'm doing the cheerios thing." Mercy smiled.
"I'm signing up for Glee. My mom and dad met in there, and I kinda really want a place to just have fun. But Mercy, do me a favour, when you join cheerios, don't turn into your sister or those other cheerio bit-"
"Okay, well since you're signing up for glee, what song are you going to sing?" Zendaya asked.
"No idea yet, something fun. No ballads. I'll leave that to Caroline or Genevieve." Matt said, opening his locker and grabbing his math textbook.
"Well, find a song quickly. And make it good." Zendaya said, walking off. She stopped and turned around and smiled "I'm gonna sign you up now, then get to class."
"So do you want any help finding a song?" Mercy asked with a smile.
"Nah, I'll find something. I've still got like 6 hours to think about it." Matt shrugged. "I'm gonna go find Lina, but I'll see you in class."
Matt spent most of the time before class looking for his sister, but when Emmaline Hart didn't want to be found, she was impossible to find. Unlike most Sophomores, Emmaline didn't really have any friends. But she liked it that way. She liked being all by herself. She liked the silence that came with being alone. Sure, she would've liked to fit in, but she wasn't going to go out of her way to change who she was to try and fit in. Back in her freshman year, her mom tried to get her to join the Cheerios, because it was apparently "A legacy for the Fabray women to be cheerios". But Emmaline had the perfect argument against her mother in that respect. She wasn't a Fabray. She was a Hart. She wasn't like her mom, or her aunt Frannie, or her hell-spawn of a cousin Ruby. She was more like her dad- A free-spirit. The only thing she had in common with her mom was her feminism. Back at the start of freshman year, she had asked her parents if she could be home-schooled like her dad had been, but her parents didn't have the time to teach her. Her mom was a ridiculously successful actress, and her dad was an amazing manager for her mom. Emmaline could never ask them to take time out of their jobs to teach her. Secretly, she envied her brother. He fit in so easily. He could make friends in an empty room. She would never admit to that though-she liked people thinking of her as the weird, loner hippie-chick.
She sat in her Spanish class, reading an old favourite- The Book Thief. She had read the book like a million times.
"Hey Matilda." Emmaline heard someone say to her. She looked up and saw two cheerios- Grace Lipoff and Adrianna Ryan.
"Really? Is that the best you can do?" Emmaline asked.
"I think the hippie is trying to be funny Ade," Grace said with a smirk on her face.
"I think she should know better Grace, don't you?" Adrianna said with a wicked smile on her face.
"Girls, leave her alone. Okay?" The voice of a boy came from behind the girls. They turned around and saw Dodge Crawford-Hummel standing with his books in his arms.
"Mind your own Frodo!" Grace snarled.
"Frodo? That's so original! Now sit down, class is about to start." Dodge said, pushing past the two vile cheerios and into the seat beside Emmaline. The cheerios looked at each other and scoffed. Adrianna opened her mouth to say something when the teacher came in, telling everyone to sit down.
"This isn't over. Freaks!" Adrianna said, as she and Grace took their seats.
"You didn't need to do that." Emmaline said, looking at her defender. "They're just gonna come after you now, you know that right?"
"Yeah, well I've faced worse than a couple of stuck up bitches like them." Dodge said smiling. "Now, why were you sitting in here all alone reading this?" Dodge asked, holding up Emmaline's book.
"Because it's my favourite, and I WANTED to be alone." Emmaline said, matter-of-factly.
"Well, you don't need to be alone now. You've got me" Dodge smiled a big goofy smile at Lina, who just rolled her eyes.
"Great. Thanks. But like I said, I wanted to be alone. I like to be by myself."
"Why?" Dodge questioned.
"You ask a lot of questions, you know that?" Emmaline said, narrowing her eyes.
"I know, you'll learn to love me" He said, smiling brightly at the girl.
The day went very quickly for Matthew Hart. He felt like he had just started his first day of high school, and it was already lunch time. He came out of his drama class with Mary-Kate O'Brien and Mallory Crawford-Hummel right beside him. They were talking about their crazy drama teacher, so caught up in the conversation that they didn't see the three cheerios walk their way- slushies in hand. Grace Lipoff, Adrianna Ryan, and new cheerio, Sabine Montana, raised their cups and threw them into the faces of the three freshman.
"Oh My God!" Mary-Kate yelled, as the icy drink felt like it was burning her skin.
"What the hell was that for?" Matt asked angrily.
"Ask you're freak sister and her Shire-loving homo of a brother." Grace said, pointing at Mallory.
"Tell them that if they ever try to outsmart us again, they'll get more than a slushie to the face. Got it?" Adrianna smiled evilly. "Let's go ladies, Coach Lynn wants us to meet in the gym."
"I am going to KILL Dodge!" Mallory said, stomping down the hall.
"My mom told me that they used to slushy people back when she was here, I thought they didn't do that anymore." Matt said.
"Oh they do it alright," The freshmen heard someone say. They turned around and their eyes met with a junior, West Bieste, son of the infamous coach Shannon Bieste, "Follow me, I'll get you guys cleaned up." With that the two freshman and the towering junior went down the hall to the nearest bathroom to clean off the remnants of the ice cold slushies that the two 14 year olds were wearing.
A/N: Okay so firstly, I would like to apologise for taking so long to update. And then would like to apologise for the fact there are no songs in this chapter either. I wanted to introduce some of the background characters and have something important happen- the first slushy facial.
So the background characters introduced in this chapter are:
Mary-Kate O'Brien, who was first mentioned in the Authors Notes in the Puckleberry chapter. She is a freshman who is in the drama club. Her look-a-like is Laura Marano.
Grace Lipoff, who is the conniving daughter of former Cheerio Bree, and her former McKinley Titan, Phil Lipoff. She is in her junior year, is co-head cheerio and her look-a-like is Keke Palmer.
Adrianna Ryan, who is the vicious daughter of Bryan Ryan. She is a junior also, and is co-head cheerio. Her look-a-like is Claire Holt.
Sabine Montana, a young, naïve cheerio who would do anything to be popular, even slushy people she went to Junior high with. She is a freshman, and her look-a-like is Chloe Grace Moretz.
West Bieste, a junior football player and the only son of Shannon Bieste. He is completely different from the other Titans, he is a nice guy(got that from his mom). His look-a-like is Steven R. McQueen.
You may also have noticed that Quinn and Joe are slightly OOC, however that is done on purpose. Quinn, after years of acting, and being in the spotlight, is slightly neurotic and Joe has lightened up a lot and isn't so much of a prude anymore.
So please Read and Review. Thank you.
