Wanda
It seemed like forever until I finally heard the familiar sound of footsteps coming towards our room.
"Ian!" I said running into his arms, "I didn't know what was happening or who they were, I was so worried, I wanted to go back to you but they said that I needed to stay back."
"Shhhh, it's all right," He said kissing my head, "The new people, they seem nice, they're not gonna cause trouble," he promised.
"Never send me away like that again!" I said shoving his chest without fulling pulling myself out of his arms.
"I was trying to get you to safety," Ian said, "If anything happened to you I don't know what I'd do"
"I know," I said turning his face to look me in the eye, "But how do you think I felt? I didn't know where you were, they could have killed you and I was told to just sit back and wait!"
"I just wanted to know you were safe!" I heard the tension in his voice.
"And I wanted to know that you were safe. We're a team. Promise me next time we'll face things together, no matter what." I punctuated my sentence with a chaste kiss.
"I promise," He sighed, "But that doesn't mean I won't do everything I can to keep you and our child safe. You're my world, Wanderer, and I am not gonna lose you." I felt the familiar rush of warmth I get when he says my name.
"You're my world," I said never taking my eyes off of his. He pulled me into him and gently pressed his lips to mine. It was a gentle steady kiss, but it still left my knees feeling weak. The rest of the world faded and it was just me and Ian. There were no unknown travelers, no danger, it was just me and Ian. We were alive and safe, and it was beautiful. When our kiss finally came to an end I looked up and smiled, and all the fear and frustration of the day had been washed away.
"They've found a whole new system of caves," Ian told me when we started getting ready for bed.
"Really?" I ask shocked, "How have we not known about all of the tunnels?"
"Apparently, it was behind on the one of the thorny vines," He explained.
"What's it like?" I asked curling up under the covers.
"It's pretty big, there are two bigger spaces. He thinks one would be good for storage during the rains and the other for farming. There are a few other little ones, I think the new people might stay there." Ian told me climbing into bed next to me, pulling me up against him.
"They're staying?" I asked tiredly as I put my head on his chest.
"Yea, them seem nice, they have two little kids and one about Jamie's age, I don't think Jeb would turn them away if they wanted to stay." He said.
"Jamie will like that, there's never anyone his age." I yawned feeling my self surrender to the comfort of our bed.
"Good night my Wanderer."
"Goodnight my Ian."
"Morning sleepy heads," Jeb said walking into the room "Come on guys, time to show our guests around."
"Okay," Ian said sitting up, "Just give us a second,"
"Fine, just be quick" Jeb said leaving us to get ready.
"So, you ready to meet our new guests?" Ian asked me as we pulled on our clothes.
"Yea," I said, "I really want to see the new caves."
"Yea, apparently the one room gets good light, but I couldn't tell last night." Ian said walking out towards Jeb.
"Ian," Jeb said, "You go get everyone, have them meet us in the dining hall, we're gonna introduce 'em to the newcomers."
"Do they want to stay?" Ian asked, "Last night they seemed like they might be leaving soon."
"Well that's up to them." Jeb said and started walking away. "Ya coming?" He asked turning back towards me.
"Yes!" I said hurrying off after placing a quick kiss on Ian's check.
"This is where the new caves are?" I asked as we walked towards the unfamiliar tunnels.
"Yep, come on," He said, "They're staying just up here."
I felt an odd feeling of excitement crept in. I was going to finally meet these new people and I am always interesting in meeting new humans. They always have such interesting stories and unique personalities.
"Morning," Jeb said as we walked in to a large area that I could see clearly thanks to the rays of sunlight that were illuminating the room.
"Who are you?" A little boy with dark brown hair and hazel green eyes asked pulling at my leg.
"I'm Wanda," I say smiling down at him, "Who are you?"
"I'm Greyson, but you can me Grey I'm five," He said proudly holding up five fingers.
"Nice to meet you, Grey" I said leaning down next to him. He seemed small for his age but he seem very confident.
"You have the pretty eyes," He said "Anthony says stay away from the pretty eyes, some are mean" He stepped back a little. "Are you a mean?"
"It's okay," I said soothing him, "I'm not mean, I won't hurt you," I promised.
"Okay" He smiled and stepped closer. Suddenly I felt someone pet my hair.
"You're hair pretty." I heard a little voice say and turned to see a girl with chocolate brown hair and emerald eyes.
"This is Wanda, She's nice" Grey said full of authority to the girl who still holds some of my long hair.
"I Aubrey." The girl said pointing at her chest.
"She's only three," Grey said as if it meant he was 100 years older than her.
"You have pretty hair to," I said smiling at her.
"Aub's don't mess with her hair!" I hear a woman say before she picks her up.
"I'm Evie," The woman said smiling at me, "Sorry about her, she's a little crazy," The woman looked to be about 20 or 22 and she was just a little taller than me with ink black hair and dark almond eyes.
"This Wanda," Grey said taking my hand, "She's a nice pretty eyes."
"Nice to meet you" I said extending my other hand.
"Nice to meet you too," Evie said shaking my hand.
"So you what do you think of the place?" I asked trying to start conversation as Jeb was still talking with the a few others from the group.
"Yea, it's a wonderful place you have here," She said looking around.
"It is." I smiled, "Are you planning to stay?"
"I stay!" Aubrey declared earning a laugh from Evie.
"We are thinking about staying, but only if that is okay. That's probably what the others are talking about." She said casting a quick look back at the group talking with Jeb.
"He'll probably let you," I said "He never turns people away."
"YEAAAA" I heard a little voice say and look down at a smiling Grey. "I like it here!"
"You really think so?" Evie asked her eyes filling with hope.
"Yea sure, Jeb's great, They're probably just talking about work, everyone has to work around here, not that they let me do much now."
"Why not?" Evie asked confused.
"Ohh with the baby on the way, no one lets me do anything, it's not like I don't want to. I barely five months and they treat me like a glass doll" I said, placing a hand on my slightly enlarged belly.
"You're pregnant?" Evie asked, "Who's the lucky guy?"
"Ian," I said, "You meet him last night. He has blonde hair and blue eyes."
"Ohh yes I remember him!" Evie said with a spark of recognition, "He seems nice. A lot nicer than that other guy, Tyler I think?"
"Kyle," I corrected her, "He's alright, once you get past all those thorns, he's really protective of Sunny that's all."
"Ahh I see," Evie said though she seemed less than convinced.
"Come on," We heard Jeb say, "Time for breakfast,"
"Breakfast!" A gleeful Grey cheered and Aubrey clapped her hands with a grin on her face.
"That's right bro," A boy, who looks like an older version of Grey, came over to the boy.
"Who's this?" The boy asked Grey.
"This is Wanda!" Grey smiled apparently content to introduce me around to everyone in the new group.
"She has pretty hair!" Aubrey chimed in.
"That she does!" Laughed a woman walking over, with eyes of the same emerald as Aubrey's with deep auburn hair.
"Momma," Aubrey cheered as she leaned toward the new woman who took her from Evie, placing a kiss on Evie's lips.
"Eww Mommas no kissy!" Aubrey giggled.
"Okay!" Evie laughs ruffling the girl's hair and grabbing the hand of the other woman.
"I'm Luce by the way," The girl smiled at me, "Nice to meet you Wanda."
"You too," I said smiling at the family before me.
"Breakfast!" Grey shouted pulling my hand.
"You heard the man," Jeb laughed and the sound fills the room, "Let's get this show on the road."
We walked away through the new caves. It was a pretty simple set up, first there's a big room, then a straight way with alcoves off to the side, a right turn, then the room with light. As we walked Grey made sure to inform me of everyone's name and that they are all nice mostly, except for Juno and Andrew, according to him they kiss a lot, so do Luce and Evie, other than that he assured me that was in the midst of the nicest people in the whole wide world.
"Listen up," Jeb said to the people gathered in the dining hall, "These are my new guests. I expect you all to be kind to them because, they're going to be staying in the new caves. Now let's eat!" He finished rubbing his hands together and walking toward the food, leaving no room for discussion. Almost immediately the room erupted with chatter as people begin to mine each other for more information.
"Welcome to your new home." Ian said to the group as he takes my free hand. "Let's get some food."
"FOOD!" Grey smiled looking hungrily at the food ahead of us.
A smile found its way to my face and I was too happy to pay attention to the angry faces of Kyle, Maggie and Sharon.
