Chapter 5
Emma's POV
Something about this Pan character didn't feel right, I knew my gut was telling me not to trust him, but I didn't want to be rude to his kind offer to come play with him and the boys. Henry was holding my hand as he leads me towards the forest with a bright smile on his face; at least one of us was having a good time. It didn't take long for us to find an area that was filled with amazingly well built tree houses. I looked up in awe; and in my head I was able to count ten tree houses, one for each lost boy.
"Pretty cool huh?" Henry said happily. All I could do was nod; I heard the boy Pan chuckle as he walks over to me and Henry. The rest of the of the lost boys started running around, some climbing the trees, two of them getting a fire started, and the rest just having fun.
"What do you think Emma?" Pan asked curiously, he wore that charming smirk of his. It looked like he was always planning something; I knew I would have to keep my guard up around him.
"It's wonderful, do you guys always sleep out here?" I asked.
"Yup, the boys and I prefer to be outside with nature than stuck inside with the adults all day and night" He explained proudly.
"I guess you don't like adults all that much do you?" I asked. By this point Henry is playing with the lost boys, but I am keeping an eye on him.
Pan looks at me with an empty expression. "Why should I? Adults always think that they are so much better than us, they think they know us when they don't really know anything" He explained somewhat coldly.
My green eyes look down at the ground as his words echoed through my head; I couldn't help but understand his feelings, even if they felt so wrong when they came from him.
"It looks like you know from experience that you know what I am talking about" Pan says softly.
I look up at Pan with a warning stare. "That's not something you don't need to know about"
He just smiles and holds his hands up in defense. "Whoa their tiger; didn't mean to cross any lines. Look how about I show you what the tree houses look like inside, I can show you mine" He replies calmly as he points up to the largest tree house.
I shake my head. "I can't, I promised Miss. Regina that I would keep an eye on Henry" I replied.
I suddenly felt the boy gently grab my hand into his. "Don't worry Henry will be fine, I just want to show you the place real quick" He guides me up the stairs that were nailed to the bark of the tree and I carefully follow him up the tree, but not without having one more glance at Henry. I could see him hanging out by the fire and roasting marsh mellows with some of the boys. When we made it up to the top of the tree house I was awed by the beauty. It looked like the furniture was all handcrafted, there was a large king size bed, a dresser with a mirror, a book shelf filled with books and comics, and a few hand held game stations sitting on a small table where he could eat at. "Not as fancy as the mansion, but it's home" Pan smiled.
I walked over to the window that was near the bed and could see the mansion from here, I was in awe, but I did my best not to show it. I heard Pan taking a seat on his fancy bed as I continued to look out the window. "So Emma, how does it feel to be here? To be with the immortals?" he asked.
I turned around to give him an annoyed look, but he kept wearing that smug little smile of his. "You think that your so much better than humans don't you?" I asked.
He tilts his head all innocent like. "Aren't we? I mean humans have such short lives, and they can be such fragile things. Don't get me wrong Emma I have nothing against humans, in fact I admire them. I am amazed at how happy they can live their lives even knowing that they could die at any moment" He explains as if he was casually talking about his day.
Anger flashed through my eyes as I stared at the immortal boy, what would he know what it means to be human? What would he know what it feels like to be frighten for your life every day? I wanted to punch him in the face for what he said, but I was afraid to make any of these characters angry.
I watched Pan suddenly stand up and he quickly moves very closely to me, right up to my face. "Has the cute human ever been kissed by an immortal?" he asks playfully.
That was it, I was done playing nice. I used whatever strength I could find to shove him out of my space and caused him to land harshly onto the bed. "Don't you dare come near me" I warned.
He is now annoyed, his kind playful features completely gone from his face as he stands back up. "Listen human, if you don't treat me with respect, I'll tell all the other characters that you're nothing but a lost little brat that nobody wants" He warns. My eyes go wide, as his smirk returns. "Wondering how I knew? I can always tell when a child doesn't have real parents" he explains.
"Please…please don't tell" I begged pathetically. I didn't want the rest of these immortals to know about my life, I should have known their kindness was all an act! Pan was enough proof for me to realize that I couldn't trust any of these characters; they all saw me as a weak pathetic human. I honestly didn't care if they saw me weak, I knew I was strong inside, but I didn't need them to rub it in my face and tell me how pathetic my life was, I knew how bad it was. Pan continues to smile and slowly makes his way back to me, pinning me harshly to the wall.
"After I get that kiss" He agrees. He presses his lips hard against mine. I wanted to cry, I wanted to scream but I knew I had to let him have his way. It wasn't like this was the first time I've been through something like this; I knew it would be over soon, I just had to be strong. Eventually he finally pulls away with a proud look on his face. "Not bad, for a human"
"Emma!" I could hear Henry from outside calling me. My hands were shaking; it was taking all I had not to have my entire body shake in despair. How long do I have to keep enduring this kind of pain, how long am I going to be used by people?
"Better head back outside, I think Henry wants to play with our little human guest now" Pan begins to make his way down the tree.
All I wanted to do was cry; memories of my past taunted my mind as I tried to block everything out. When I came here I thought that I would finally have a place of peace, a place where I wasn't constantly consumed by fear, but the darkness would always fallow me, I would never have my happy ending.
"Emma!" Henry calls for me again. I take a deep breath and pull out Regina's phone to see that it was nearly ten minutes before Henry needed to be back in the house. I finally made my way down the tree and was greeted by the beautiful smile Henry wore.
"Aren't the tree houses so cool?!" he asked.
All I could do was nod and smile as best as I could. "Henry we need to go"
Henry frowns. "Awe but I want to play some more"
"Henry can stay with us tonight if he likes" Pan offers kindly, with his fake smile.
"No" I said in an authoritative tone. "I promised Miss. Regina that I would bring him home by ten, let's go Henry" I gently take his hand and we start to make our way back to the mansion.
"Umm are you ok Emma?" Henry asks.
"I'm fine" I said, unable to look at him and his sweet innocent face. I felt so dirty, and so unworthy of that beautiful smile.
"But your shaking" he says concerned.
I finally stop dead in my tracks when we got far enough from the forest; I look down to see that Henry was right. My entire body was shaking. I pulled my hand away and shoved them both into my pockets. "Sorry, I'm just cold" I quickly explained.
It didn't take us long to finally make it back to the mansion. Henry made a dash for the living room where he easily found his mother sitting on one of the leather couches watching some kind of drama with Red and Belle.
"Mommy we had marsh mellows!" Henry cheered.
Thankfully most of the shaking had finally stopped when I entered the living room. "You did huh? Well how about you go brush those teeth of yours and I'll be up there to read you a story soon" she offered.
"I want Emma to read me a story!" He replies.
Regina looks at her son surprised then turns to look at me. "Well it seems that you and Henry have grown quiet close. He usually only ever wants me or Snow to read to him"
"Umm Henry, I think it would be better if your mom reads to you. Mothers are always better with story time anyway" I said softly, suddenly feeling very small again. I didn't want Regina to be angry at me and get in the way of her mother/son bonding time. I walk over to hand Regina back her cell phone, and she gives me a friendly smile; but I began to wonder if it was fake like Pan. I used to be so confident in being able to tell when people were lying to me. But these people weren't human; they were much more dangerous to trust.
"Thank you Emma for looking after Henry for me. And I wouldn't mind it at all if you would like to read him one of his stories, only if you want to of course" she replied.
Henry walks over to me with pleading eyes. "Oh please Emma!" he begs.
I hear Belle chuckle. "Good luck saying no to that look Emma, that kid can't get anyone to say no to him when he pulls his puppy dog look on you"
I sigh. "All right, but just one story. I'm kind of tired myself" I said with a light yawn. Something about Henry's sweet little face was slowly helping me forget the fear that Pan had engraved inside me. If I could just be with this gentle little boy than maybe I could have some kind of peace in my time here after all.
"Yeah! I'm gonna go brush my teeth and get changed for bed. I'll be real quick!" He promises and rushes upstairs.
Regina chuckles lightly as she shakes her head from her son's enthusiastic energy. "Come here and join us Emma" Red offers kindly.
I nod shyly and take my seat next to Regina at the end of the couch.
"So how was your first day?" Belle asks.
My memory flashes back to Pan. "So Emma, how does it feel to be here? To be here with immortals?" His smug smile taunted me. Did these creatures all think that they were so much better than humans? I know we can't live forever, I know my life is pathetic, but that didn't mean all humans were, just because we couldn't live forever that didn't make us weak!
"Emma?" Belle asks concern.
I feel a light touch from Regina and I suddenly jump in surprise with a gasp. "Emma dear are you all right?" Regina asks, I can here worried tone for me.
I look at her with an empty stare. "I'm fine, I'm sorry I think I'm just tired from all the excitement" I said lamely.
"Are you sure, maybe I should just go ahead and read to Henry tonight" Regina says carefully.
I shake my head lightly and give Regina one of my small smiles. "It's alright I made a promise after all" I said. The immortal girls looked at me with eyes that almost seemed really worried for me. I wanted it to be real, I wanted their kindness to be real, but it was just so hard to trust people that thought of you as nothing more than a mere human.
It wasn't long after that when Henry came rushing down now dressed in his red pajamas. "I'm ready" he says happily.
I smile as I stand up and walk over to the boy, but turned to face the immortal beings. "I guess I'll see you all tomorrow?" I asked.
Red is the one to reply. "Everyone usually has their own schedules throughout the day but we can generally be found somewhere around the mansion" she explains.
"It was really nice to meet you Emma, I can tell that you and my son are going to be fast friends" Regina said warmly.
I look at Henry's big innocent smile, than back to Regina. "He's a really good boy, he's really lucky to have such a kind mother to raise him" I did my best to hide the sadness in my tone, but I wouldn't let them try to see if I was all right again, or have them ask questions about my family, not tonight. I turn my attention back to Henry with the biggest smile that I can give him, which isn't very big but it was for me. "So, how about that story?" I ask him.
He jumps up and down and pulls me by the hand again as he practically drags me up the stairs. I can't help but laugh for the first time in a long time.
