Speculative Impromptu

06. Melody

He first heard it when he passed by the open window. He had stopped in his tracks because it was something different from the waves or wind or birds.

It wasn't particularly loud or clear or high-pitched. It felt like something pulling at his memories, his heartbeat, his grasp.

As he stepped outside onto the porch and onto the sand, he realized it wasn't even a sound. It was a frequency: something reverberating and resonating and vibrating with a mixture of peace and promise.

And as he got closer to the beach's rocks, the cyclic phenomenon changed like shortened wavelengths, but then he paused between purposeless steps and knew the peaks and troughs were beginning to pick up in pace. So his feet followed.

He picked out a path among the uneven palisades according to the intensity of the nonverbal call. He ducked beneath a barnacle-encrusted arch and suddenly the ocean spray, unstable ground, and cool breeze disappeared and all that existed in the world was a low, sweet hum. He gravitated toward the sound and paid no attention to the waves lapping at the rock edges just yards away.

He didn't see the seated figure until the frequency began to undulate with alternating notes.

She noticed him immediately and her soft song trailed off once her eyes settled on the stranger's approach. She continued to lounge where she was and turned her head slightly to stare at the man curiously. Deeming him sufficiently docile, she turned back toward the rolling waters and rearranged her legs so the ocean found them more accessible.

She sang softly, as if to herself but really for her new company, and combed her fingers through her lengthy blue hair. Her movement exposed her petite breasts and she snuck a look at the man to reassure herself that he had been further enticed.

He looked embarrassed but unable to look away, like all those that came before him. He, however, failed to look particularly enthralled at her naked body. She found herself pouting at the unexpected lack of lechery.

His mouth opened to speak but nothing was said. She turned a smirk into what should have looked like a loving smile. At least she had successfully stunned him into silence.

"You… it's… you'll get cold," the man finally managed to formulate before robotically removing his jacket and draping it around her shoulders.

Maybe not then. She remained seated but curled her legs beneath her as she pivoted on one hip to stare up at him. His gaze was averted.

This would not do.

He wasn't even surprised that there was someone up here. Naked. He was simply mortified that he found the other so beautiful that he was unable to tear his eyes away from such an accidentally indecent figure.

The singing had stopped and he stared down at the seated figure swimming in his clothes with a foreboding sense of pleasure. As if this was how it was supposed to be.

The other smiled up at him and tugged at the hem of his shorts. A gesture to please be seated. He crouched instead as his jacket slid off the other's bare shoulders.

"Hello."

He was not even sure the greeting exchanged had been verbalized, but it went straight to his core and settled there leisurely and permanently engraved. The voice was like honey and gold and chocolate. He reached for the fallen fabric just to give his hands something to do because all they wanted to do was touch the other's pale expanse of skin.

The naked individual's legs unfolded and his gaze automatically fell toward the direction of movement. He choked on air when he realized he had been drawn to an ethereal man this whole time.

He worked twice as hard to straighten out his jacket so that he could lay it across the other's lap.

He regarded the other's fumbling with a certain amount of internal hilarity. He had yet to encounter a mortal so concerned with his decency, especially since it should be quite obvious that he had absolutely no qualms displaying his nudity.

This, however, was a first.

Murmuring nonsensical syllables at a soothing pitch, he pulled himself up between the squatted man's legs and, with arms hooked around the other's waist, pressed firmly against the other's chest. He knew he was getting somewhere when the man ended up kneeling on the rough ground with him inching closer. The annoying garment was getting trapped beneath him, thus leaving him comfortably exposed.

Head tilted in the manner that usually had his victims claiming his lips with no hesitation, he nearly broke his own spell with a frustrated growl when the man's free hand dreamily yanked at the fabric by his hip so to drape him again. The other hand was currently wrapped possessively around one of his biceps as if to support him.

Deciding to give up on this fight, he allowed himself to find satisfaction in the small fact that the tide was coming in. He laced his fingers with the other's by his legs and pressed a gentle kiss on the corner of the man's mouth.

He was slightly surprised that the exquisite man's skin was cool to the touch. Yet he felt in danger of overheating. The two opposing concepts warred inside his head even as he gripped the other tightly against him, body running on inexplicable rote movement. He slowly matched their lips together and a lazy delight spawned from the warm sensation shared between them. He went to explore the feeling more deeply and felt so securely held in return.

The lithe man's slender fingers ran through his hair and he basked in thoughtless bliss, that this was all he ever wanted and had and therefore would never let go. The other pulled back briefly only to begin whispering in his ear all the secrets to nature, the cosmos, life, and he would be happy to listen to this man forever.

A nagging buzz was sawing at his conscience somewhere. He ignored it and was quite content with continuing to disregard it.

Suddenly, a shout sliced straight through his daze. It came from somewhere near the beach (his house? his sister?) and he was left shivering in place.

Looking down, he realized he knelt in knee-deep and rapidly rising water. Glancing around, he realized he was alone and wet and completely confused about how he got here.

So he returned home.

She lay sprawled on a sunny rock and lethargically watched another stranger approach her. His arousal was evident and she smirked at the easy prey. She shrugged off her one piece of fabric, looped her arms around the man, and took the hapless mortal into the ocean with her.

She would be back for her jacket before high tide.
