"What the hell I did!" Blaine cursed himself, pacing the floor angrily. "There were millions of right words to say and look what you told him Blaine. You're an idiot! A damn idiot!" He ran his trembling fingers through his hair and collapsed to his bed.
Kurt was feeling safe, yet somehow misplaced at Dalton Academy. Blaine was sensing that too. He was as energetic as before, his laughter was filling the air like music. Kurt was a free spirit, he was enjoying singing, dancing, being under the spotlight. But unfortunately Warblers had a completely different concept.
It was Kurt's first day at Dalton Academy. Kurt went through the heavy doors with a bright smile and he was given a little canary named Pavarotti, as an old tradition. Kurt was so enthusiastic and happy. His face was shining... Until he made that joke.
"Protect him. That bird is your voice" said Wes seriously.
"Hey, I'll bring him to work with me. Weekends I volunteer at a stray cat rescue. It's at the bottom of a coal mine" Kurt chuckled. But the Warblers remained silent.
"That was a joke.. I.. I don't work at a coal mine" Kurt surprised a little bit. Blaine felt awkward and bit his lips, tried not to laugh. Of course that was funny and Blaine was enjoying the sarcastic side of Kurt. But Pavarotti was the symbol of the Warblers, he was a member of an unbroken line of canaries who have been at Dalton since 1891. And the other guys were so serious and conservative when it comes to traditional Dalton values.
Then Kurt tried to suggest some ideas to the council but Warblers were way too different than New Directions. At his old school, everybody had the right to express opinions and sometimes there were some arguments. New Directions was polyphonic. But with Warblers... When Wes striked the gavel, it was done.
That was the first time Kurt missed his friends so much.
Blaine sensed it.
After the meeting, Kurt heard footsteps behind him.
"Hey Kurt, wait up!"
He spun around and saw Blaine. He smiled.
Blaine took a deep breath. "He is gorgeous" he thought.
"Well, I know that Glee club was hard for you today" he said sincerely.
"It's just a different energy. Not better or worse, just something that I'll get used to." Kurt shrugged.
"We recognized that. And.. We're inviting you to an audition for a solo"
"Really? For sectionals?"
"For sectionals. Sing something good!" Blaine patted his shoulder. With that touch, Kurt's heart skipped a beat.
After Blaine was gone, Kurt stood there for a second.
He decided what to do next.
"I've to go see Rachel"
The petite brunette was sitting in front of the piano in a purple dress, pressing the keys without thinking. Kurt took a few silent steps towards her.
"Hey Rachel, I've been looking for you" he said with a genuine smile.
"Don't bother spying on me because the only solo I'm singing for sectionals are in my mind."
"Actually.. I need your help"
Rachel looked at him like he lost his mind.
"I'm going to have an audition for a solo."
"Why should I help you? I mean you're our rival now"
"Because even though we hate each other, we've had our moments. I could use your expertise, and no one knows how to kill a ballad quite like you. You are as brilliant and talented as you are irritating."
Flattered, Rachel stood up.
At the end of their conversation, Kurt decided the song. A song expresses his feelings.
Kurt was standing in front of the Warblers, trying to keep calm.
"I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel"
He walked to the window, turned his face to the day light.
"Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around, trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to"
As his magical voice filled the room, Blaine couldn't keep his eyes from him. He was mesmerized. He was afraid to breathe. They were all under the spell of Kurt.
Kurt kept singing, looking at Blaine. Their eyes locked. Blaine smiled.
"Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance"
Kurt was also watching Blaine carefully. Kurt didn't want to mess it up. As he was about to raise his hands up, Blaine made him stop with a soft gesture without anyone noticing. When he finished the song, whole room applauded. Kurt looked at the young man again. His hazel eyes were shining with proud. He approved with a gentle smile and a nod.
Kurt, Jeff and Nick were waiting outside for the results.
"So, how many times have you guys auditioned?"
"3"
"6"
"Wow!"
The heavy door of the meeting room opened and Blaine appeared. Three of them stared at him with excitement.
Blaine seemed uncomfortable to Kurt. Something snapped in his mind. Something was wrong.
"Hey guys. Nick, Jeff. Congratulations, you're moving on"
As both Nick and Jeff went enthusiastic, hugging each other, Kurt simply kept looking at Blaine.
"Any sage advice?" Kurt asked, after the doors were closed. Blaine came closer, trying to find out the right words.
"Don't try so hard next time"
Kurt couldn't believe his ears.
"I didn't realize that caring was frowned upon" he said.
"I don't know how it worked at your old school but did you noticed that we all wear uniforms around here? It's about being part of the team."
Kurt gulped. He knew that Blaine was right.. But those words..
"I guess I'm just used to having to scream to get noticed."
"You are not going to make it as a Warbler if all you care about is getting noticed."
"You're right, I'm sorry." Kurt was heartbroken. Blaine was harsh. And he just couldn't understand the reason why.
At the very same moment, Blaine was cursing at himself deep inside. "What the fuck!" he thought. It felt like he wasn't the one talking. He realized that Kurt's beautiful, gorgeous glasz eyes were filled with clouds. He tried to apologize:
"I know is going to take some getting used to but you'll fit in soon enough, I promise."
But it back-fired.
Kurt nodded gently, took a deep breath and walked away, leaving Blaine behind speechless.
