But Dr. Erskine being the one who believed in no violence in the work place asked Stark "How are your levels", I knew he was asking about the genarater levels soon to be upped to the level we need it to, for the serum to work. Howard hadn't answered as he still rubbing his cheek to where I had slapped him, I had to admit it felt good.
I smiled to myself a little and heard Stark speak "Levels at 100%".
"Good" Doctor responded.
"We may dim half the lights in Brooklyn ,but we are ready as we'll ever be" Stark said in a sad and not happy tone. I walked toward Steve and held his hand and gave it a tight squeeze, Steve thought I was giving him reasureness but I was dizzy and needed to balance on something. I walked off and zoned off to everything the Doctor had said and was already tired from walking short distances, I knew I was going to faint soon but I had to say goodbye one last time. Steve turned his head to me and I gave him a loving smile a loving wife could only give.
Doctor asked me "Are you okay Ms. Bello , Should you sit in the booth with the others" as he pointed to the top level where all the important people were sitting and I didn't want to sit with people asking me questions when I am in this state.
I shook my head no and said in a very tired voice " No doctor I am fine I just need some water and I will be fine", I had recieved water from one of the other scientists and still didn't feel better and felt even worse that I lied to my boss and friends. I sighed and wanted this to be over with so I could go home and relax, but i knew that could never happen in my profession. I lifted myself from the chair I had been siting on with a creak and clapped my hands as if I just had some new found strength and power. But in reality I was as tired as a horse and wanted sleep.
After what Stark said Erskine said into a microphone which I hated greatly at the minute he turned it on because as he tapped it my ears started ringing greatly in pain and annoyance. "Do you hear me? Is this one? Ladies and gentlemen today we take not another step towards annihilation,but the first step on the path to peace" Still not finished the nurses started to prepare Steve for the serum and I started putting on gloves to handle the serum I injected in to myself not just 2 days ago, "We begin with a series of micro injections into the subjects major muscle groups. The serum infusion will cause immediate cellular change. And then, to stimulate growth, the subject will be saturated with Vita-Rays."
Erskine finished his prepared speech to the goverment officals in the booth and approached me and Steve while I was almost ready to inject the serum in Steves body, but had to injected the pencillion first into Steves body while Erskine was watching impaitenly. After the easy part was done I planted a kiss to Steves forehead and wispered into his ear "I'll be waiting for you on the other side." Which caused both of us to blush like a tomato. He said " That wasn't so bad" He was talking about the shot I gave him which was only the first step and now I wanted to cover my ears to avoid the screams coming, but resited. Erskine said to begin the experiment " Serum infusion beinging in Five," I smiled at Steve."Four," The machine was clamping down his arms to inject the serum"Three, two" Erskine touched Steves arm to offer him reasureness "One" It was beggining. They pressed the button to start and the blue liquid I made was put into Steves body atomaticly. I could hear his groan of pain and his eyes widened. I grinded my teeth to avoid hearing this, but couldn't.
Esrkine said "Now " to activate the Vita Rays. He pulled down a lever and it started. The machine started moving and it looked like a alien machine and the capsules closed and the nurses injected large thingy's which contained the vita rays into the empty outlets. As I was breathing as hard as a dog that needs water, Erskine, knocked on the capsule and said "Steven? Can you hear me?".
Steve at an attempt to make a joke when a situation turns bad " It's probably too late to go to the bathroom right?". I always laughed at Steves jokes and thought they were truly funny and I laughed and coughed, which thank god Steve didn't hear. In response to Steves joke Erskine said in a leadership tone"We will proceed" and I stood up to be brave and i stood right next to Erskine looking a little flushed and a little like a leader, but my body was betraying me as I was growing more tired as I stood up. Stark then moved away from the wheel again and grabbed a pair of goggles to shelid the vita rays power from his eyes.
He went to the wheel again and said " That's 10%". The little window from Steves capsule light came out and grew brighter and I suddenly felt pain in my arms as if I felt Steves pain and I felt heat coming from my body. I took my gloved hand and put it to my sweaty and hot forehead. I imagined to if other people saw me just now I would look very hot and flushed and that is not good in my eyes. Stark said each time he raised the percentage " Twenty percent" and turned the wheel more. " Thirty" he annoced as he turned the wheel more and the more pain I felt throughout my body. " That's 40%" He said again as more people sheilded their eyes away from the capsule.
My heart was racing and beads of sweat appeared on my forehead, Then, an assitant said " Vital signs are normal" but I knew they wouldn't be for long. Stark said in a strained tone " That's 50%, 60, 70". Then, I started screaming the exact time Steve did and it was truly blood curling I fell down at my knees clucthing my arms and i couldn't stop it was so much, Stark looked as if he wanted to help, but couldn't as he had to control the vita rays power. Nurses came to help me as did Erskine and I said "Ignore me help Steve, I am fine", but I couldn't stop screaming. Erskine rushed up the stairs and shouted at the capsule " Steven!, Shut it down". I looked up to see Peggy in a distressed manner and holding on to the strairs railing like her life depended on it. Peggy than yelled " Shut it down"
I held on to my arms as tight as I can and I kept screaming and everyone ignored me with strained faces to help me. I was in so much pain it was nearly killing me. Then I stopped and felt my nose drip something in my hand. It felt wet and sticky, it was blood and I was having a nose bleed from all the pain I was sufferring. Erskine than rushed down the stairs and said directly to Stark " Kill the reactor, Mr. Stark, Turn it off! Kill it! Kill the reactor!". Stark compiled and rushed to turn the lever to turn it off. Steve than yelled through the capsule " No! Don't! I can do this!" Stark listened to Steve and started to turn the wheel again.
I then got up from the floor wiped my blood from my nose and tapped a surprised nurse on her shoulder. I whispered to her " Tell Steve, I love him and never let go of me and I know you don't know me at all but can you do this for me please". She looked surprised and confused, she saw my face and I saw her's it was so young almost 19 and I can't believe it, she had the eyes of someone who saw too much and nodded her head slighlty and said with a voice of a strong young woman some thing i could never be " I will try , I promise". Then, I heard the words from Stark " Thats 100%" and I saw white. When I fell all I remember is Steves boyish face and his blue eyes any mother would love and what I didn't know is that I would spend 71 years "passed out".
